Two Decades Of Supporting Excellence In Stem Through Programs That Work: A History Of High-Quality Stem Programming In The Commonwealth Of Virginia, Bill Haver, Deborah Neely-Fisher
Journal of Mathematics and Science: Collaborative Explorations
The Virginia Mathematics and Science Coalition annually recognizes effective science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. The leaders of these Programs That Work receive recognition and others gain ideas to incorporate into their STEM programs. Programs That Work was initiated in March 2000 as a part of a statewide conference designed to better understand effective strategies to increase the success of women, minorities and members of other groups who had been underrepresented in STEM. Programs That Work has since expanded to include effective STEM programming for all students and teachers at all levels by recognizing school systems, colleges and universities …
The Role Of Bicultural Identity Integration In The Relationship Between Discrimination And Well-Being, Jasmine Chananna
The Role Of Bicultural Identity Integration In The Relationship Between Discrimination And Well-Being, Jasmine Chananna
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Previous research indicates that experiencing discrimination from dominant group members and having a less integrated bicultural identity are associated with negative psychological outcomes for bicultural individuals. Further, bicultural identity integration (BII) has also been found to mediate the relationship between discrimination from dominant group members and well-being. However, there is insufficient research exploring the impact of discrimination from one’s heritage group members. Thus, this study aimed to explore the impact of in-group discrimination on psychological adjustment and self-concept clarity. This study also aimed to explore BII as a mediator between in-group or out-group discrimination and psychological outcomes. Correlational analyses supported …

“Duet Me”: Music Theory Pedagogy In The Age Of Social Media, Alyssa Barna
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
In this article, I outline a possible use of social media platforms in the music theory and ear-training classroom using a model assignment on (but not exclusive to) TikTok. I show how students can work collaboratively and musically in a platform they may use in everyday life to promote collaboration and engagement with musics and people outside the walls of the university. From this study, I extrapolate themes that illustrate both the benefits and pitfalls of social media use (pedagogically and otherwise). The first section situates social media platforms among the variety of technologies used in theory classrooms in the …

The Heyman Project: A Multimedia Anthology For The Undergraduate Classroom, Anna Stephan-Robinson
Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy
The Heyman Project is a multimedia anthology designed for flexible use throughout the undergraduate core music theory curriculum. It is also appropriate for use in high school music theory classes. Featuring music by American composer Katherine Ruth Heyman (1872-1944), the resource consists of four pdf documents: a student packet and a sample worksheet/lesson, along with instructor’s editions of the same documents. The student packet contains sheet music for 13 songs, each preceded by a brief note giving historical and/or theoretical background. The worksheet, designed for a first-year theory class, features the song “Elysion,” and focuses on diatonic modes, melodic construction, …
Striking A Balance: Why Federal And State Laws Should Be Revised To Effectively Deter Puppy Mills, Kaitlyn Cameron
Striking A Balance: Why Federal And State Laws Should Be Revised To Effectively Deter Puppy Mills, Kaitlyn Cameron
Animal Law Review
The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) was passed in 1966 with the purpose of ensuring the humane care and treatment of animals. The AWA delegates licensing responsibilities to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Animal Plant and Health Inspection Services (APHIS), who have the authority to investigate violations of the AWA and penalize relevant organizations, such as puppy mills, when necessary. Unfortunately, the AWA sets forth minimum standards for the humane care and treatment of these animals and the USDA has exercised its own discretion in penalizing violations of the AWA. The AWA establishes standards for compliance, but …

Time To Free The 'Evidence': Animal Cruelty Prosecutions, Pre-Conviction Forfeiture, And Brady Violations, Gary J. Patronek
Animal Law Review
This Article presents empirical research to investigate the traditional practice of holding seized animal victims of maltreatment in protective custody until their disposition is resolved pursuant to a criminal proceeding. This is of particular concern because protective custody usually entails confinement in an animal shelter or similar institutional setting. Extended confinement under these circumstances is undesirable–especially when dealing with large numbers of animals–because such confinement causes stress that may inadvertently result in secondary victimization of the animals. Furthermore, institutional confinement poses substantial logistical challenges and imposes substantial economic costs for those tasked with caring for the animals. The impetus for …
Exploited: The Unexpected Victims Of Animal Agriculture, Caitlin Kelly
Exploited: The Unexpected Victims Of Animal Agriculture, Caitlin Kelly
Animal Law Review
Awareness of how nonhuman animals suffer in animal agriculture has been growing for years. But are they the only victims? Selling the products and parts of hundreds of millions of animals in the United States every year requires someone to manage those animals. It requires someone to kill those animals. And it requires someone to dismember those animals long before they ever reach the neat rows of plastic wrapped packaging at the grocery store. To accomplish this process at an industrial scale means hundreds to thousands of animals are together in barns which reek of their waste and create biohazards …

The 3rs And Non-Human Animals In Biomedical Research: The Next 65 Years, Paul Locke, Richelle Romanchik, Breanne Kincaid, Emily Golden
Animal Law Review
It has been 65 years since the publication of Russell and Burch’s “The Principles of Humane Experimental Technique,” which established the ‘3Rs’—refinement, reduction, and replacement—as the key principles applicable to decision making about, and the use of, non-human animals in laboratory settings. The 3Rs are universally accepted by responsible scientists throughout the world and form the basis for many national legal and regulatory systems governing animal use in laboratories. This Article will discuss broadly how the 3Rs have evolved over the past seven decades since the publication of Russell and Burch’s seminal work, and examine the 3Rs in light of …

Alchemizing The Bar: An Examination Of Global Ethical Considerations For Using Alternatives To Animals In Research, Testing, And Education, Lenore M. Montanaro
Animal Law Review
Countries regulate scientific research in various ways. Such structures are the result of input from scientists, attorneys, physicians, advocates, and others. These schemes may also derive from outcomes of the research itself. Some countries do not incorporate or require the ethical use of an animal—or an alternative to the use of an animal—to be considered. Others do incorporate, and even require, the ethical use of animals in research. In alignment with The Three Rs—replacement, reduction, and refinement of animals used in science—technological capabilities now allow scientists to increasingly use alternatives, such as microphysiological systems, rather than animal models. This Article …
The Effects Of Phoslock And Water Treatment Residual On Phosphate Concentration Levels And Phosphate Adsorption, Anna Soehnlen
The Effects Of Phoslock And Water Treatment Residual On Phosphate Concentration Levels And Phosphate Adsorption, Anna Soehnlen
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Eutrophic, nutrient enriched water can induce adverse effects like harmful algal blooms (HABs) in aquatic ecosystems. Numerous studies have been conducted to control nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen in order to mitigate the growth rate of HABs. During the spring semester of 2023, a research project investigated if the bentonite clay product, Phoslock, was able to remove phosphorus when it was added to distilled water and surface water under laboratory conditions. The researchers noted potential deficiencies in Phoslock’s ability to decrease the concentration of phosphorus while maintaining the initial value of adsorbed phosphorus. Expanding from this past research, two additional …
Artificial Intelligence Is Like A Perpetual Stew, Nathan Reitinger
Artificial Intelligence Is Like A Perpetual Stew, Nathan Reitinger
American University Law Review
Artificial intelligence is inescapable. It is in our phones, fridges, and most of the businesses we engage with use it to “improve” their services. From deciding on what YouTube video to watch next to driving vehicles or firing weapons, artificial intelligence is a linchpin in our society. But what is artificial intelligence? And, more importantly, why does that matter? It matters because we are currently unprepared to deal with the paradigm-shifting legal issues brought about by artificial intelligence. And without this understanding, we are nearly certainly going to make mistakes. The bright side is that artificial intelligence is not complicated. …

Precision Application Of Water To Equine Racing Surfaces, Sydney Rae Cannon
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
As the horseracing industry has come under more scrutiny as of late, horse and rider safety has become a priority. The best was to keep a rider safe is to keep them on their horse, and the best way to do that is to keep the horse upright. This all comes down to consistency both between tracks and across a single track. The most important method of managing track consistency is through moisture content. This study examined how track design can impact moisture application, how moisture content can impact the surface material, and what design elements can be implemented to …

Development Of Fungal Hydrogels For 3d Bioprinting And Cellular Agriculture, Lauren E. Doyle
Theses and Dissertations--Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering
Hydrogel scaffolds are an important component to cellular agriculture. There is a need for a sustainable alternative to the commonly used gelatin-sodium-alginate hydrogels. Specific edible fungus species may provide a suitable alternative. Many fungi possess high protein contents, ease of cultivation, and strong functional properties. However, functional characterizations and application of fungal flour and protein extracts in cellular agriculture are lacking in the literature. Therefore, this study’s objectives were to 1) Develop processes to create functional fungal protein fractions from different fungal strains and evaluate their characteristics, and 2) Quantify the printability of the resulting fungal gels for the creation …

A Class Of Game-Theoretic And Fokker-Planck Optimal Control Frameworks In Colon And Esophageal Cancer, Mesfer Alajmi Phd
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
In this dissertation, we first present a new stochastic framework for parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification in colon cancer-induced immune responses. A stochastic process that captures the system's inherent randomness determines the dynamics of colon cancer. The stochastic framework is based on the Fokker-Planck equation, which represents the evolution of the probability density function corresponding to the stochastic process. We formulate an optimization problem that takes individual patient data with randomness present and solves it to obtain the unknown parameters corresponding to the individual tumor characteristics. Furthermore, we perform a sensitivity analysis of the optimal parameter set to identify the …

Applications And Analysis Of Nlp Deep Learning Models For Antibiotic's Side Effects Classifications, An Ly
CGU Theses & Dissertations
I introduce a novel recursive modification to the classical Goemans-Williamson MaxCut algorithm, offering improved performance in vectorized data clustering tasks. Focusing on the clustering of medical publications, I suggest to employ recursive iterations in conjunction with a dimension relaxation method to enhance density of clustering results. Furthermore, I propose a new vectorization technique for articles, leveraging conditional probabilities for more effective clustering. I believe that these methods will provide advantages in both computational efficiency and clustering accuracy. I will analyze the effectiveness of recursive iterations and higher-dimensional generalizations of the GWA in the hopes of achieving more accurate dissimilarity-based clustering. …
Law And Literature In Pennsylvania: A Changing Landscape, Juliette Gaggini
Law And Literature In Pennsylvania: A Changing Landscape, Juliette Gaggini
Honors Theses
This thesis examines themes of American national identity perpetuated in Pennsylvania surrounding private property through historical, literary and legal analysis. Ideals of private property and land ownership are broken into three transitions throughout Pennsylvania history: the American frontier and initial land claiming by settlers, mass-deforestation and the introduction of widespread agriculture, and finally industrialization and the introduction of mining and fracking. Each of these transitions highlights the physical changes to the region and how they were influenced by American ideals of private property, productivity, and profitability.
Throughout this thesis, I analyze both literary and legal texts to examine societal beliefs …

The Ruins Of Solitude: Maternity At The Limits Of Academic Discourse, Lette Bragg
English Literature Faculty Works
What happens when love unravels one’s knowledge structures? In The Ruins of Solitude, after the birth of a child, Bragg embraces the event of love and examines the resulting disintegration of her supposed authorial subjectivity. Against the pressure to produce and organize knowledge—the pressure of writing a dissertation, for example—Bragg contemplates the poetic modes of thinking and ethics that emerge from her experience of reading continental philosophy while caring for her infant child. Dwelling on what she would have once excluded from her intellectual work—her maternity, the mole on her chest, her palm against another body, her exhaustion at the …

In the pandemic- and post-pandemic era, new as well as exacerbated work-life stressors have led academia to recognize the vital role wellness plays in teaching and learning. While most institutional and pedagogical response has understandably focused on students’ holistic health, this essay promotes increased instructor self-care as a necessary complement to supporting learners in higher education. By practicing meditative exercises drawn from contemplative pedagogy, faculty and instructional staff can create synergy between mindfulness strategies that we might invite students to try and our own attention to the whole self outside class. As the essay’s case study shows, labyrinth walking in …

Journal Articles: Oncology and Hematology
Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cell survival and growth is fueled by the induction of B-cell receptor (BCR) signaling within the tumor microenvironment (TME) driving activation of NFκB signaling and the unfolded protein response (UPR). Malignant cells have higher basal levels of UPR posing a unique therapeutic window to combat CLL cell growth using pharmacologic agents that induce accumulation of misfolded proteins. Frontline CLL therapeutics that directly target BCR signaling such as Bruton tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitors (e.g., ibrutinib) have enhanced patient survival. However, resistance mechanisms wherein tumor cells bypass BTK inhibition through acquired BTK mutations, and/or activation of alternative survival …

Journal Articles: Oncology and Hematology
The current clinical management of extranodal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) primarily depends on conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, underscoring the need for innovative therapeutic strategies. This study explores the clinical significance and therapeutic implication of c-MYC (MYC) in ENKTL. Initially, we identified MYC protein overexpression in approximately 75% of cases within a large cohort of 111 patients. MYC overexpression was strongly correlated with lymphoma cell proliferation and poor clinical outcomes. Intriguingly, integrating MYC expression into the prognostic index of NK cells lymphoma with Epstein-Barr virus (PINK-E) prognostic model significantly enhanced its predictive power. Subsequently, we implemented MYC knockdown in NK …

Language reflects how people think and behave in their culture. To have successful conversations, both language use and cultural awareness should be taken into consideration. Undeniably, Japanese grammar is different from Thai making it even harder for Thai learners to have fluent and appropriate conversations in the Japanese language. In the classroom, typically teachers often focus on grammar, leaving less time for students to practice conversation. Consequently, beginner learners often miss cultural details in conversations and are unable to communicate effectively. Thus, it is important for teachers to immerse students in the Japanese culture to improve their speaking skills and …

Chickpeas (Cicer arietinum L.) are used as a good source of proteins and energy in the diets of various organisms including humans and animals. Chickpea straws can serve as an alternative option for forage for different ruminants. This research mainly focussed on screening the effects of adding beneficial chickpea seed endophytes on increasing the nutritional properties of the different edible parts of chickpea plants. Two efficient chickpea seed endophytes (Enterobacter sp. strain BHUJPCS-2 and BHUJPCS-8) were selected and applied to the chickpea seeds before sowing in the experiment conducted on clay pots. Chickpea seeds treated with both endophytes showed improved …

Hierarchical Multi-Label Text Classification In Earth Science Datasets, Rajashree Dahal
Theses
This thesis addresses the challenging problem of hierarchical multi-label text classification and introduces a novel zero-shot approach that recommends the label up to the depth of hierarchy in which it is confident. In order to validate the efficacy of the proposed method, we experimented using various potential embedding models such as text-embedding-ada-002, mpnet-all, instructor embeddings, and nasa-smd-ibm-st on Earth science datasets. The experimental results reveal that all considered embedding models surpass the baseline model supervised learning classifier, demonstrating the superiority of the proposed zero-shot approach. This proposed solution can minimize the label imbalance problem typically observed in the supervised learning …

Hesychasm And The Jesus Prayer: Spiritual Formation In An Ecumenical World – Exploring The Practice Of The Eastern Orthodox Jesus Prayer With The Evangelical Protestant Tradition, Craig Francis Bosman
Theses
The question that forms the heart of this research is: “Can the Jesus Prayer establish roots to develop and flourish, and be accepted as a new, legitimate practice in Evangelicalism?” To begin answering, the practice will be explored within its Eastern Orthodox context focusing on the Jesus Prayers’ biblical roots, early development, and official acceptance within Orthodoxy. Then the Evangelical movement will be surveyed to gain an understanding of its identity from a sociological and theological perspective with special attention on its soteriological framework, customary spiritual disciplines, and general attitudes toward mysticism (defined as direct experience of God through apophatic, …
