Exploring The Experiences Of A South Asian Client And Facilitators Of Men's Behaviour Change Programs In Western Australia, Madhuri Mathisen

Theses

This study explores the experiences of male perpetrators of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) attending men’s behaviour change programs in Western Australia from the perspective of program facilitators and a South Asian client. Informed by social and contextual constructionism with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study examines the experience of 10 mixed culture facilitators who worked with South Asian intimate partner violence perpetrators in men’s behaviour change programs and one South Asian client of an intervention. The participants’ experiences were contextualised through a semi-structured interview. The facilitators’ findings revealed that South Asian clients demonstrated patriarchal beliefs with a victim-blaming tendency and …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Online Program For Emergency Nurses Caring For Victims Of Interpersonal Violence: A Mixed Methods Study, Melanie Brown Jan 2024

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of An Online Program For Emergency Nurses Caring For Victims Of Interpersonal Violence: A Mixed Methods Study, Melanie Brown

Theses

Forensic nursing encompasses a range of skills that can be utilised across healthcare services and legal services. The delivery of forensic nursing care covers a vast number of roles and practice areas that can improve patient outcome, including the care of victims of interpersonal violence who often face multiple barriers in achieving a positive medicolegal outcome. A nurse’s ability to identify a potential victim and initiate forensic nursing care in an emergency care setting can positively influence the patient’s engagement with support services and the justice system. Despite this, a review of the Australian literature has identified inconsistencies in forensic …

Ernst Jünger’S Epistemology And Metaphysics, Angus Baird Jan 2024

Ernst Jünger’S Epistemology And Metaphysics, Angus Baird

Theses

Jünger is typically interpreted in the philosophical literature according to a Heideggerian reading to be a metaphysical Nietzschean who took the will to power to be the essence of reality. This is especially so for Jünger's “Gestalt of the worker.” Yet Jünger likened his Gestalt to Goethe’s “Urpflanze,” a phenomenological, not metaphysical, conception. And Jünger's uses of "will to power" and "eternal return" are inconsistent with cosmological readings of Nietzsche.

This thesis will argue that the core of Jünger’s epistemology is an account of “intuitive perceptions.” Through these intuitive perceptions Jünger thought he grasped metaphysical reality. Through this grasping Jünger …

The U.S. Statecraft Of Corporate Human Rights Obligations, Andrew B. Spalding Jan 2024

The U.S. Statecraft Of Corporate Human Rights Obligations, Andrew B. Spalding

Law Faculty Publications

Statecraft may be defined as “the use of instruments at the disposal of central political authorities to serve foreign policy purposes.” That definition, though, may admit of a narrower and a broader understanding. The narrower and perhaps more cynical notion imagines statecraft as the management of a power struggle for the sake of self- preservation. Even the Oxford Dictionary of Politics and International Relations conceives statecraft as fundamentally about “managing relations between states to the advantage of one’s own country.” With roots extending at least as far back as Machiavelli’s The Prince with its infamous preoccupation with preserving power in …

Biopiracy: Using New Laws And Databases To Protect Indigenous Communities, Cleo-Symone Scott Jan 2024

Biopiracy: Using New Laws And Databases To Protect Indigenous Communities, Cleo-Symone Scott

Law Student Publications

Indigenous people have a historical link to those who inhabited a country or region at the time when people of different cultures or origins arrived. Traditionally, indigenous people have a special relationship with their ancestral environments. But their way of living has long been under threat. The land that indigenous people live on is home to over 80% of our planet’s biodiversity, but it continues to be appropriated and plundered due to bioprospecting or, as some call it, biopiracy. Bioprospecting is defined as “the exploration and information gathering of genetic and biochemical material to develop commercial products.” While innovation is …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The paucity of information concerning the occurrence of strongyle nematodes in New England dairy goats prompted a survey of 241 dairy goats from throughout New England. Of the 241 goats examined using the McMaster technique, 104 (42.7%) were infected with strongyles with a mean intensity (+ SE) of 369.7 + 45.8 eggs per gram. Subsequent molecular examination of 50 random samples from these goats revealed a prevalence of 88% infection specifically with Haemonchus contortus. Haemonchus contortus is the most important internal parasite of sheep and goats, exerting a crushing economic burden on the livestock industry worldwide due to lowered milk …

Feminist Use, Amanda Levendowski Jan 2024

Feminist Use, Amanda Levendowski

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

In 2015, Judge Pierre Leval wrote that copyright isn’t about authors, it’s about the rest of us. “While authors are undoubtedly important intended beneficiaries of copyright,” he explained, “the primary intended beneficiary is the public.” He would know—his scholarship has been transformative for how every jurist from the Supreme Court down approaches key copyright questions. But copyright often falls short of this aspiration by benefiting only a sliver of the public.

Copyright law grants exclusive rights to authors of qualifying works, such as books, which protects those works from unauthorized copying. The first copyright legislation, the Statute of Anne of …

Electromechanical Mapping Of The In Vivo Porcine Heart And Stomach, Haley Nesmith Patton Jan 2024

Electromechanical Mapping Of The In Vivo Porcine Heart And Stomach, Haley Nesmith Patton

All ETDs from UAB

Electrical excitation and mechanical function are integral to the physiologic activity of both the heart and stomach. Electrical depolarization through the myocardium triggers contraction in the heart. When normal sequences of electrical activity are disturbed, the heart’s mechanical function may also be disturbed, affecting its ability to pump blood effectively, sometimes fatally. Similarly, electrical waves called slow waves initiate gastric peristalsis. Abnormalities in slow wave propagation patterns can disturb the stomach’s ability to mechanically process gastric contents, sometimes resulting in delayed gastric emptying, nausea, and vomiting. The relationship between mechanical function and electrophysiology is not unidirectional, though. Mechanical stimuli can …

The Role Of Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors In Inflammatory Airway Diseases, Molly Easter Jan 2024

The Role Of Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptors In Inflammatory Airway Diseases, Molly Easter

All ETDs from UAB

Chronic inflammation plays a role in the development and progression of airway diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). COPD is caused primarily by chronic cigarette smoke exposure. Conversely, CF is a single gene disorder caused by mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene (CFTR). Although the causes of COPD and CF are different, there are common pathological features. Studies show that chronic inflammation plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of both COPD and CF. Moreover, chronic inflammation induces ageing-associated pathomechanisms like cellular senescence, which exacerbates chronic inflammation. Previous work demonstrates that …

Genotype And Sex Specific Effects Of Methionine Restriction On The Life And Healthspan Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Robert Smith Jan 2024

Genotype And Sex Specific Effects Of Methionine Restriction On The Life And Healthspan Of Drosophila Melanogaster, Joshua Robert Smith

All ETDs from UAB

Reduced dietary intake of the amino acid methionine has been reported to significantly extend the lifespan of common laboratory model organisms including Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mus musculus, and Drosophila melanogaster. Methionine restriction (MR) has also been achieved via non-dietary means such as metabolite supplementation and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing. MR along with protein and calorie restriction are known as dietary interventions capable of producing pro-longevity benefits through regulation of nutrient sensing pathways. Recent studies in model organisms have also identified beneficial effects of a low methionine diet on aging-associated phenotypes and markers of overall healthspan. However, the effects of this intervention on …

Characterizing The Reproductive System Of Avrainvillea In HawaiʻI, Brinkley Mikayla Thornton Jan 2024

Characterizing The Reproductive System Of Avrainvillea In HawaiʻI, Brinkley Mikayla Thornton

All ETDs from UAB

Sex has generated incredible life cycle diversity across eukaryotes. Differences in the timing of meiosis and fertilization have generated tremendous variation in the duration of haploid and diploid phases. To understand what drives eukaryotic sexual diversity, there remains a need to determine the rates of sexual and asexual reproduction in natural populations. Moreover, life cycle diversity is predicted to be correlated with the reproductive system. Yet, most studies on reproductive variation have focused on diploid or diploid dominant organisms, hindering the ability to understand sex. Macroalgae can serve as useful models to overcome this limitation via life cycle and reproductive …

The Impact Of O-Glcnac Signaling On Dna Hydroxymethylation In Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Rudhab Bahabry Jan 2024

The Impact Of O-Glcnac Signaling On Dna Hydroxymethylation In Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Rudhab Bahabry

All ETDs from UAB

Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE) is the most prevalent form of focal epilepsy and the most treatment-resistant type. This condition is characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures typically originating in the hippocampus. Epigenetic modifications such as DNAme changes have been implicated in brain functions such as synaptic plasticity, learning and, memory, and cognition. The oxidation of DNA 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) and its oxidized form, 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5-hmC) catalyzed by Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) family of dioxygenases and linked to epilepsy's hyperexcitable state. Post‐translational modifications (PTMs) of proteins, such as O-GlcNAcylation, facilitate cells' immediate responses to intracellular or extracellular environmental stimuli by modifying the functions of …

Analysis Of The Immune Response After Readministration Of A Novel Aav6 Gene Therapy Containing Tlr9 Inhibitory Sequences, Sarah Elysse Allen

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Therapeutic options for the treatment of Surfactant Protein-B (SP-B) deficiency, an autosomal recessive disorder that leads to fatal respiratory distress, are extremely limited with the exception of double lung transplantation. One method for treating this monogenic lung disease is with adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy treatment that delivers the hSFTPB transgene into the lungs. The transient nature of AAV transgene expression led to a need for sustained gene expression, which could possibly be achieved through redosing. The main obstacle with redosing is the innate immune response and subsequent inflammatory response pathways that are activated after recognition of unmethylated CpG motifs …

Adult Learners Self-Derive New Knowledge Through Integration Of Novel Information And Prior Knowledge And Are More Successful With Reactivation, Jayantika Chakraborty, Alena G. Esposito Jan 2024

Adult Learners Self-Derive New Knowledge Through Integration Of Novel Information And Prior Knowledge And Are More Successful With Reactivation, Jayantika Chakraborty, Alena G. Esposito

Psychology

Self-derivation through integration is the process of integrating novel facts and producing new knowledge never directly taught. Knowledge integration has been studied with the presentation of two novel facts. However, in educational settings, individuals are required to integrate new information with prior knowledge learned days, months, or years earlier. Prior knowledge robustly predicts learning outcomes, but less is known about self-derivation through the integration of new information with prior knowledge. Thus, in Study 1, we examined adults' (n = 25) memory integration of new facts with prior knowledge. The participants had 52% accuracy in self-derivation. In Study 2 (n = …

Belugas (Delphinapterus Leucas) Create Facial Displays During Social Interactions By Changing The Shape Of Their Melons, Justin T. Richard, Isabelle Pellegrini, Rachael Levine

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Beluga whales are considered unique among odontocetes in their ability to visibly alter the appearance of their head by changing the shape of the melon, but only anecdotal observations are available to evaluate the use or potential function of these melon shapes. This study of belugas in professionally managed care aimed to establish an ethogram for the repertoire of categorizable melon shapes and then evaluate their potential function as intentional communication signals by determining if they were produced and elaborated during social interactions of varying behavioral contexts while in the line of sight of a recipient. Five different melon shapes …

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Wild populations of New England cottontails (NECs, Sylvilagus transitionalis) are declining and occupy a small proportion of their historic range. To conserve this species, wild-caught cottontails participate in a reintroduction breeding program. To increase the program’s productivity, this study described breeding behavior in pairings with (n = 3 pairings) and without (n = 9 pairings) reproductive success. Females were paired with two males consecutively and behaviors were recorded using 24 h continuous video footage. Activity peaked between 19:00 and 06:00. Copulation was only observed in successful pairings, and the gestation period was 31 days. Successful pairings had …

Characterization Of Antibody Repertoires Developed From Naive And Recall Responses, Nicholas C. Curtis Jan 2024

Characterization Of Antibody Repertoires Developed From Naive And Recall Responses, Nicholas C. Curtis

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Adaptive immunity, comprised in part by the antibody repertoire, is the cornerstone of our ability to remain healthy amongst the plethora of pathogenic challenges we encounter daily. Despite the importance of understanding antibody repertoire development, much remains unknown about the composition and evolution of circulating antibodies in response to viral challenges. To better understand antibody repertoire development, we profiled the serum antibody repertoire using a combination of next-generation sequencing and serum antibody proteomics in the predominantly naïve response against SARS-CoV-2 spike and the recalled response to influenza hemagglutinin. The response to SARS-CoV-2 spike in four convalescent individuals was diverse (consisting …

Enhancing Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus Drobachiensis) Production Toward Sustainability, Tara Plee Jan 2024

Enhancing Green Sea Urchin (Strongylocentrotus Drobachiensis) Production Toward Sustainability, Tara Plee

Open Access Dissertations

The green sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis) fishery was once prosperous in the Gulf of Maine, peaking in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, since the early 1990s, the fishery has dramatically declined despite having harvesting restrictions. To sustain the industry, production through aquaculture is necessary, but hatchery production methods are not yet optimized, with settlement success and post-settlement survival as low as 1-5%, and the spatial scale for field grow-out may be limited in some regions due to climate change. Additionally, there are knowledge gaps in fishery management regarding whether oversized S. droebachiensis help sustain natural stocks. This …
