Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
If Philippine cinema, during a time of dictatorial duress, has indeed gathered into its fold allegories of a certain social texture, then contemporary critique must also provide a rather thick notion of allegory itself, in order to describe the quality of the metonymic membranes which make possible the emergence of substance through eloquent surface. In this essay, I propose a critical elaboration of Laura Mulvey’s category “carapace,” and a subtle yet significant declension of surface, “diaphane,” in an attempt to intervene in the understanding of film as a plastic form with the tensile capacity to surpass its flatness by choosing …
Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele
Why Share A Language Or Tradition? Gadamer And Davidson In Dispute, Bart Vandenabeele
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
That the ideal way to communicate and reach understanding is by speaking the same language, is a widespread view: it is rarely questioned in debates concerning language, (intercultural) communication, and interpretation. I shall argue that Hans-Georg Gadamer, too, suffers from this common language “syndrome.” Donald Davidson is one of the few philosophers who explicitly uttered qualms about the necessity of a common language. Davidson critiques Gadamer’s common language idea, and rightly claims that a common language is not needed for communication and understanding. I show that Davidson has been unable to develop this insight fruitfully and underestimates the importance of …

“What Kind Of Teacher Are You?”: Critical Communication Pedagogy In Abbott Elementary, India Hagen-Gates
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
In December 2021, Abbott Elementary debuted their first episode, following a cast of diverse teachers at an underfunded elementary school in Philadelphia. While there is previous research on the importance of tv representation and pedagogical practices in the media, this show presents a unique opportunity for analysis. Using Fassett and Warren’s (2007) commitments of Critical Communication Pedagogy as my main theoretical guide, I argue that Abbott Elementary showcases the ongoing process to improve pedagogy, specifically in the commitments of culture as central, language as constitutive, and reflexivity as essential.

International experiences, including studying abroad, can impact individuals’ identities in many ways. What is this like in the case of an anime fan studying abroad in Japan for six weeks? What are potential ways in which anime fans can be transformed? Throughout this autoethnography, I make sense of the ways in which I personally navigated and was transformed by studying abroad in Japan. It is my hope that making sense of my journey will allow other anime fans traveling to Japan to make sense of their own adventures.
The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary
The Case Of Cronos: A Study Of Familial Resilience And Transnational Political Critique, Nicole Tanquary
Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research
Resilience as a trope is often associated with the neoliberal ideal of individualized personal success, an ideal that is frequently used to deny the existence of structural oppression (Phipps, 2014). Analyzing cultural artefacts, however, can offer a reappraisal of how publics understand resilience in relation to neoliberal economic policy. In this paper, I analyze a 1993 film by Guillermo del Toro, titled Cronos, to understand how resilience can be presented as familial rather than individual, as well as the trickiness of using film to critique neoliberalism while under the influence of state agencies. In examining Cronos, I argue that …

Prevalence And Pathology Of Endoparasitic Infections Of Rock Pigeons (Columba Livia) In Taiwan, Chih-Li Yu, Yen-Li Huang
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Pigeon racing is popular in Taiwan, but most lofts are located on residential roofs or in attics, which means pigeons could potentially spread parasites to humans. It is necessary to investigate the prevalence and diversity of endoparasitic infections in pigeons. This study investigated endoparasitic infections in 301 pigeons (both loft-kept racing and feral pigeons) in Taiwan using gross and histopathological examinations. The identified endoparasites included Trichomonas spp. (30.2%, 91/301); Ascaridia spp. (22.3%, 67/301); Haemoproteus spp. (20.6%, 62/301); Eimeria spp. (11.0%, 33/301); Capillaria spp. (7.3%, 22/301); Hexamita spp. (6.0%, 18/301); Raillietina spp. (4.7%, 14/301); Heterakis spp. (2%, 6/301); and Dispharynx sp., …

Outdoor education programs, such as Forest School, have physical, social-emotional, and academic benefits for children, and teachers trained in nature-based pedagogy are more likely to provide outdoor education opportunities for their students. Incorporating outdoor field experiences in teacher preparation may teach new teachers how to implement nature-based programming. However, little is known about how outdoor field experiences affect pre-service teacher development. Grounded in self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1977), this mixed-methods study examined in a pretest-posttest design how participating in a 12-week outdoor field experience contributed to pre-service teachers’ (N = 9) knowledge of nature-based pedagogy and their self-efficacy. Participants also completed …

Obesity, by any standard, is a global health crisis. Both genetic and dietary contributions to the development and maintenance of obesity were integral factors of our experimental design. As mutations of the melanocortin 4 receptors (MC4R) are the leading monogenetic cause of obesity, MC4R haploinsufficient rats were fed a range of dietary fat (0–12 %) in a longitudinal design. Physiological and motivational assessments were performed using a locomotor task, a 5-choice sucrose preference task, an operant task with fixed and progressive ratios, as well as a distraction operant task. Dendritic spine morphology of medium spiny neurons (MSNs) of the nucleus …

TBC1D3 is a primate-specific gene family that has expanded in the human lineage and has been implicated in neuronal progenitor proliferation and expansion of the frontal cortex. The gene family and its expression have been challenging to investigate because it is embedded in high-identity and highly variable segmental duplications. We sequenced and assembled the gene family using long-read sequencing data from 34 humans and 11 nonhuman primate species. Our analysis shows that this particular gene family has independently duplicated in at least five primate lineages, and the duplicated loci are enriched at sites of large-scale chromosomal rearrangements on Chromosome 17. …

Novel Nanocomposite Of Carbonized Chitosan-Zinc Oxide-Magnetite For Adsorption Of Toxic Elements From Aqueous Solutions, Dalia A. Ali Eng, Ganna Gaber Ismail Eng.
Chemical Engineering
Herein, a novel nanocomposite (carbonized chitosan-zinc oxide-magnetite, CCZF) was developed to effectively remove toxic elements in water remediation. Combining the high adsorption capacities of chitosan with the magnetic properties of magnetite and the chemical stability of zinc oxide, the combination of these unique properties makes it an efficient and versatile material that offers a sustainable solution for water purification. The (CCZF) nanocomposite was synthesized through the coprecipitation method and characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and zeta potential analysis. The results showed …

Diverse enteric pathogens, transmitted through human and animal feces, can cause gastroenteritis. Enteric viruses, such as human Aichi virus, specifically genotype A (AiV-A), are emerging pathogens that cause illnesses even at low doses and are spreading globally. This research developed a reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assay targeting the 3CD junction and a reverse transcription colorimetric loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-cLAMP) duplex assay targeting junctions 2BC and 3CD of the AiV-A genome for rapid and sensitive detection of this virus in metropolitan and regional wastewater samples in Queensland, Australia. The performance of these assays was evaluated using control materials …

Liquid droplet dynamics are widely used in biological and engineering applications, which contain complex interfacial instabilities and pattern formation such as droplet merging, splitting, and transport. This paper studies a class of mean field control formulations for these droplet dynamics, which can be used to control and manipulate droplets in applications. We first formulate the droplet dynamics as gradient flows of free energies in modified optimal transport metrics with nonlinear mobilities. We then design an optimal control problem for these gradient flows. As an example, a lubrication equation for a thin volatile liquid film laden with an active suspension is …

Maternal separation (MS) in mice results in behavioral deficits and gut microbiota dysbiosis that all persist into adulthood. Limosilactobacillus reuteri DSM 17938 modulates gut microbiota, alters systemic metabolites, and facilitates immune regulation. To assess the effect of DSM 17938 on biochemical and behavioural stress-associated changes, newborn mice were exposed to unpredictable MS (MSU) daily from day 7 to day 20 of life, with intragastric administration of DSM 17938 or PBS as control. Body weight, brain levels of cholecystokinin (CCK), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), corticosterone, and stool microbiota were assessed at day 21. Behaviour tests including Y-maze (YMT), Tail Suspension …

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers
Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) causes a common congenital infection leading to long-term neurological impairments including brain, cochlear, and ocular pathology. Infection of newborn mice with murine (M)CMV is an established model of neuropathology caused by congenital CMV infection, with recent work suggesting that brain pathology may be driven by immune responses. In the eye, however, CMV retinitis is thought to result from virus-driven necrosis in the absence of T cell responses. We found that MCMV infection of newborn mice recapitulates human eye disease after congenital CMV infection, including focal chorioretinitis, inflamed vasculature, and disrupted blood-retinal barriers. Moreover, infection drove extensive T …

This study investigates the impact of single prolonged stress (SPS), a model of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), on cardiovascular responses, hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) activity, and vascular function to elucidate the mechanisms linking traumatic stress to hypertension. Although SPS did not directly cause chronic hypertension in male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats, it induced acute but transient increases in blood pressure and heart rate and significantly altered the expression of hypertension-associated genes, such as vasopressin, angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R), and FOSL1 in the PVN. Notably, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) were predominantly elevated in the pre-autonomic regions of the …

Perpetua And Felicity: Faith And Courage In The Face Of Death, Mackenzie Unruh
Senior Honors Theses
Perpetua was a young, educated wife and mother who was martyred for her Christian faith. Because she was educated, she was able to record most of the events leading to her martyrdom in her diary. Her account was later supplemented by another author and narrator. The account also includes details about Felicity, a slave girl who was arrested with Perpetua. While Felicity is included in Perpetua’s story, most of the information about them focuses on Perpetua. Throughout history, and particularly in Medieval times, the Church has painted her as a perfect saint who rejected her family for unity with Christ. …

The current literature on resilience shows a trend toward a dynamic process conceptualization, moving away from the previous trait-approach. However, the term “dynamic” is increasingly treated as a buzzword and is thereby oversimplified in the literature. The aim of this article is to develop a unified language pertaining to resilience as a dynamic process, so as to ensure progress in this field. First, we briefly introduce the traditional trait approach alongside the implicit assumption on which it is built. Next, we contrast this approach by discussing what dynamics entail and how this approach differs from mainstream psychological approaches. Specifically, dynamics …

Finding effective ways to monitor laying hen welfare is challenging as UK flock sizes can reach 16,000 birds. Eggs provide potential for welfare monitoring, as they are a daily output with previous evidence of links to stress. We explored the associations between stressors and eggs using two complementary studies. In Study 1, hens experienced social or heat stressors and eggs were scored daily for defects in shell characteristics. All eggs were scored on a three-point scale: 1 (no defect); 2 (minor defects); or 3 (unsuitable for whole egg sale in the UK). Texture defects were higher after stress treatments and …

Existing literature suggests that infection-specific mechanisms may play a significant role in the onset and progression of dementia, as opposed to the broader phenomenon of systemic inflammation. In addition, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl (HMG)-coenzyme A (CoA) reductase inhibitors have been proposed as a potential therapeutic approach for sepsis, given their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We investigated the neuroprotective effect of an HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor (simvastatin) by analyzing neurodegenerative markers, mitochondrial respiration, and neuronal tracing in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and thalamic nucleus reuniens (RE) of sepsis survivor animals. Adult Wistar rats were subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture or left non-manipulated. …

Red harvester ants, Pogonomyrmex barbatus (Smith, 1858) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), common in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, are known to gather seeds from areas around their nests and store the seeds inside their nests for later consumption. As these ants often nest in and near agricultural fields, some of these seeds may be from crops and may also be infected with fungal plant pathogens. These pathogens can degrade seed coats and may cause the seeds to rot within the ant nests, decreasing storage time and potentially spreading the pathogen to other stored seeds. We studied how head mold, a …
