Molecular Mechanisms Governing Osteosarcoma Pulmonary Metastasis, Niveditha Nerlakanti
Molecular Mechanisms Governing Osteosarcoma Pulmonary Metastasis, Niveditha Nerlakanti
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Osteosarcoma (OS) is a bone cancer that commonly metastasizes to the lung. Despite advances in the development of targeted therapies for treating solid malignancies, broad-acting chemotherapies remain the first line of treatment for OS. In assaying the efficacy of approved therapeutics for non-OS malignancies, we identified the histone deacetylase 1 and 2 (HDAC1 and 2) inhibitor, romidepsin, as effective for treating established lung metastatic OS. However, romidepsin has noted toxicities in humans, thus we aimed to define the primary mechanisms through which HDAC1/2 mediates OS progression to identify more selective druggable targets/pathways. Microarray and proteomic analyses of romidepsin-treated OS cells …

Chromosomal inversions (INVs) are particularly challenging to detect due to their copy-number neutral state and association with repetitive regions. Inversions represent about 1/20 of all balanced structural chromosome aberrations and can lead to disease by gene disruption or altering regulatory regions of dosage-sensitive genes in cis. Short-read genome sequencing (srGS) can only resolve ∼70% of cytogenetically visible inversions referred to clinical diagnostic laboratories, likely due to breakpoints in repetitive regions. Here, we study 12 inversions by long-read genome sequencing (lrGS) (n = 9) or srGS (n = 3) and resolve nine of them. In four cases, the …

This disclosure describes techniques to guide a user in the composition of photos captured by a camera device, based on automatic scene analysis and subject framing. A camera device prompts the user to pan the device across a scene surrounding the user to capture a scene photo, e.g., a 360-degree panoramic photo. Additionally, the user captures a subject photo showing an intended subject for a new photo. An artificial intelligence (AI) model is used to analyze the scene photo and the subject photo. The model outputs locations and/or poses for the subject in the scene that makes for an appealing …

Buddha-Nature And Personality As The Ground Of Ethics: A Metaethical Dialogue Between DōGen And Berdyaev, Anton Luis Sevilla
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper seeks to contribute to the ongoing Buddhist-Christian dialogue by bringing together the teachings of Zen Master Dōgen and the Russian Christian philosopher Nikolai Berdyaev. This dialogue discusses a metaethical question: What is the foundation of ethical practice? I aim to show that Dōgen’s idea of “buddha-nature” and Berdyaev’s idea of “personality” can be understood as the foundations of ethical practice in ways that are similar and mutually clarifying in their total affirmation of human temporal existence. We begin by discussing the general contours of Dōgen’s practice-realization and Berdyaev’s creative ethics, and then proceed to a comparative examination of …

Revisiting Charles Perrault’S Iconic “Bluebeard” Serial Killer In Modern French Variants, Christa Catherine Jones
Revisiting Charles Perrault’S Iconic “Bluebeard” Serial Killer In Modern French Variants, Christa Catherine Jones
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
“Bluebeard” (ATU 321: Maiden-Killer), a fairy tale about a wealthy noble man and serial killer, is the most gruesome of Charles Perrault’s fairy tales. Bluebeard epitomizes evil and horror. In Perrault’s tale, Bluebeard’s evilness is linked to patriarchy and power, as symbolized by the villain’s iconic blue beard. Historically linked to Henry VIII (1491–1547), King of England, Bluebeard has also been associated with Breton commander Gilles de Rais who was hanged for sorcery and satanic abuse. This article examines how contemporary francophone “Bluebeard” variants refashion and redefine evil and whether they contain any new morals linked to evilness. Do …

A method of treating neurodegenerative diseases using hUCB plasma is presented herein. hUCB plasma attenuated the hyperactive response (Group III) and potentiated the normal response in Group I ALS patients, but did not alter that of the non-responders to PHA (Group II). The elevated activity of caspase 3/7 observed in the MNCs from ALS patients was significantly reduced by hUCB plasma treatment. The ability of hUCB plasma to modulate the mitogen cell response and reduce caspase activity suggest that the use of hUCB plasma alone, or with stem cells, may prove useful as a therapeutic in ALS patients. hUCB plasma …

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Interleukin-37 (IL-37) has anti-inflammatory properties in innate and adaptive immunity. Patients with multiple sclerosis (MS), an autoimmune inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS), have increased serum levels of IL-37. However, it is unknown whether IL-37 has an inhibitory effect on ongoing autoimmune neuroinflammation, thus offering a potential MS therapy.
AIM: Here, we examined the effect of IL-37 in an experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) model after disease onset to determine if it was protective.
FINDINGS: IL-37-treated mice developed a less severe disease than control mice, with reduced demyelination as determined by increased expression of myelin basic protein. …

Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBC) are treated primarily by chemotherapy and lack clinically validated therapeutic targets. In particular, inhibitors of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, abnormally activated in many breast cancers, failed to achieve clinical efficacy in TNBC due to the development of adaptive drug resistance, which is largely driven by the transcriptomic plasticity of TNBC. Expression of CDK8/19 Mediator kinases that control transcriptional reprogramming correlates with relapse-free survival and treatment failure in breast cancer patients, including TNBC. We now investigated how CDK8/19 inhibitors affect the growth of TNBC tumors and their response to mTOR and AKT inhibitors. In contrast to the effects …
A Systematic Exploration Of Theoretical, Conceptual, And Methodological Alignment Of Social Network Analysis In Organizational Behavior, Morgan Gleason Miller
A Systematic Exploration Of Theoretical, Conceptual, And Methodological Alignment Of Social Network Analysis In Organizational Behavior, Morgan Gleason Miller
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
This systematic review examines how Social Network Analysis (SNA) is used in the study of Organizational Behavior (OB). Industrial-Organizational Psychology Literature suggests SNA tends to be applied using either a structural or relational approach (Erikson, 2013). Some researchers claim that this methodology is applied inconsistently due to the intermingling of two distinct underlying frameworks and the exclusion of individual differences and interpersonal factors limits the relevance of SNA (Erikson, 2013; Kilduff & Lee, 2020). Results indicate the structural perspective is slightly dominant across the use of SNA, but the use of both frameworks is increasing. Directionally, study methods aligned with …
