Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Purpose
The clinical learning environment is an essential component in health professions’ education. Data are scant on how postgraduate trainees in sub-Saharan Africa perceive their medical school learning environments, and how those perceptions contribute to their engagement during training, their emotional wellbeing, and career aspirations. This study examined perceptions of postgraduate medical trainees (residents) in a resource-limited setting, regarding their learning environment and explored perceptual contributions to their career engagement during training. The data reported contribute to understanding how clinical learning environments can be improved in low-resource settings in Uganda and elsewhere.

Enterococcus faecalis plays the key role in endodontic infections and is responsible for the formation of biofilm on dentin, which causes a resistance against periradicular lesions treatment, consequently the aim of this study is to use nanoparticles entrapping anibacterial agents coated with chitosan that in authors previous study showed a successful in vitro biofilm inhibition, additionally incorporated in thermoresponsive gel.to benefit nanoparticles` small size, and the positive charge of their surfaces that binds with the negatively charged surface of bacterial cell causing its destruction, in addition to the sustained release pattern of the drug based nanoparticles in gel. Therefore, Ciprofloxacin …
Understanding The Relationship Between Narcissism And Political Orientations In College-Aged Adults, Sabrina Richards
Understanding The Relationship Between Narcissism And Political Orientations In College-Aged Adults, Sabrina Richards
Undergraduate Honors Theses
When you try to guess someone’s political beliefs, you probably look towards the usual culprits: race, gender, education, religion, age, marital status, and more. Have you ever tried looking at their narcissistic tendencies? There are seven different types of narcissism, and in a study conducted by Peter K. Hatemi and Zoltan Fazekas in 2018, it was revealed that there is a relationship between an adult’s narcissistic personality traits and their political orientations. It was observed that entitlement narcissism is associated with more conservative political orientations, while exhibitionism narcissism is associated with more liberal political orientations. However, there is a lack …

Protocol For An Agent-Based Model Of Recombination In Bacteria Playing A Public Goods Game, Isaiah Paolo A. Lee, Omar T. Eldakar, J. Peter Gogarten, Cheryl P. Andam
Biology Faculty Articles
Agent-based models are composed of individual agents coded for traits, such as cooperation and cheating, that interact in a virtual world based on defined rules. Here, we describe the use of an agent-based model of homologous recombination in bacteria playing a public goods game. We describe steps for software installation, setting model parameters, running and testing models, and visualization and statistical analysis. This protocol is useful in analyses of horizontal gene transfer, bacterial sociobiology, and game theory.
For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Lee et al.1

Toughness Of Recursively Partitionable Graphs, Calum Buchanan, Brandon Du Preez, K. E. Perry, Puck Rombach
Theory & Applications of Graphs
A simple graph G = (V,E) on n vertices is said to be recursively partitionable (RP) if G ≃ K1, or if G is connected and satisfies the following recursive property: for every integer partition a1, a2, . . . , ak of n, there is a partition {A1,A2, . . . ,Ak} of V such that each |Ai| = ai, and each induced subgraph G[Ai] is RP (1 ≤ i ≤ k). We show that if S is a …

Interrogation Of The Molecular Mechanisms That Finetune Fcεri Signaling And Mast Cell Outcomes, Derek A. Rinaldi
Interrogation Of The Molecular Mechanisms That Finetune Fcεri Signaling And Mast Cell Outcomes, Derek A. Rinaldi
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
FcεRI is the ITAM receptor primarily responsible for the allergic response and immune hypersensitivity diseases such as asthma. Regulation of the strength of both FcεRI signaling, and the resulting outcomes, is accomplished via a complex array of molecular mechanisms whose interactions remain unclear. Here, I explored how the biophysical properties of antigens, crosstalk between FcεRI and integrin signaling and Arf6-mediated control of trafficking and exocytosis tune mast cell outcomes. I first found significant differences in FcεRI aggregation, phosphorylation and granule secretion after crosslinking with the multivalent antigen DNP-BSA or the small, trivalent antigen DF3. I also revealed a bi-directional, Syk-mediated …

Tipping The Mesoscales: Advances In Multipeak Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging, J. Nicholas Porter
Tipping The Mesoscales: Advances In Multipeak Bragg Coherent Diffraction Imaging, J. Nicholas Porter
Theses and Dissertations
Material failure begins with strain between atoms and cascades upward into macroscopic damage such as cracks. Therefore, our ability to predict (and therefore prevent) material failure is largely limited by our understanding of this process. This understanding, however, has been impeded by the difficulty of directly observing such phenomena. In this thesis, I discuss recent advances in Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) which produce three-dimensional, mesoscopic images of interior strain in microcrystals. In particular, I present a novel algorithm, based on the concept of cyclic-constrained optimization (CCO), for the rapid, coupled reconstruction of a microcrystal from multiple Bragg diffraction patterns. …

Pkcε Activator Protects Hippocampal Microvascular Disruption And Memory Defect In 3×Tg-Alzheimer's Disease Mice With Cerebral Microinfarcts, Huaixing Wang, Zongxiu Zhang, Jarin Hongpaisan
Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Current evidence suggests that microvessel disease is involved in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Cerebrovascular disease correlates with cardiovascular disease and is complicated in ≈40% of AD patients. The protein kinase C (PKC) ε activator DCPLA can stimulate human antigen (Hu) R that prevents degradation and promotes the translation of mitochondrial Mn-superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) and vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF) mRNAs.
METHODS: To induce brain microinfarcts, we injected triple transgenic (3×Tg) and wild-type (WT) control mice with microbeads (20 μm caliber) into common carotid arteries, with or without the DCPLA-ME (methyl-ester) for 2 weeks. After water maze training, mice at 16 …

Paradas: Utilizing The Organizational Structure Of Spatial Agency In Migrant Labor Posts, Erik Duque
Theses
Sustainability is a subject dominated by topics involving the environment and economy. An overlooked pillar is that of the socio-political sphere, as it is a subgenre of sustainability that involves a wide range of variables. Fortunately, there exists a multitude of ways one can relieve social tensions, but unfortunately, as socio-political issues are much more complex to measure. Our current Latin/US-based issues are rooted in racism, colonialization, and imperialism. These past wrongs have affected Latin American countries' development in that corruption, economic instability, violence, lack of education and poverty are the outcomes that push people into migrating. Latin American migrants …

Unsupervised Multi-Resolution Analysis Of Protein-Protein Abundance Patterns In Infectious Exacerbation Of Copd, Eric Everingham
Theses
Despite consistently appearing as a top 5 cause of death domestically and internationally, understandings of the underlying biological interactions of COPD remain insufficient. Particularly, early identification of highly vulnerable patients that may experience more severe infectious exacerbation is a challenge during diagnostics. This project leverages unsupervised clustering and multi-resolution decomposition of proteomic abundance profiles in a small cohort of COPD subjects to identify candidate biomarkers of heightened exacerbation risk. As part of an ongoing study, serum and sputum samples were collected during well visits (stable illness) from n=67 subjects, and analyzed using quantitative proteomics. A scores principal component analysis was …
Retreat Village Design In Letchworth State Park Region: An Architecture Development In A Highly Valued State Park Meets The Triple Bottom Line Of Sustainability, Jing Hua
Theses
Letchworth State Park, located in Livingston and Wyoming counties, New York, renowned as the “Grand Canyon of the East”, is one of the most scenically magnificent areas in the eastern United States. However, there are no well-developed leisure centers around or in the park. The lack of good accommodations, in contrast to the availability of restaurants with local character, leisure activities, and other supporting facilities in the area, fails to fully achieve the development potential of the natural scenery of the region. This thesis demonstrates that a retreat complex village that brings people closer to the natural landscape of Letchworth …
Thermodynamics Of Ice Arena Geometry, Low- Emissivity Of Building Materials, And Natural Ventilation: An Energy Efficiency Study Of An Ice Arena In Rochester, Ny, Jonathan Sutton
Theses
This thesis explores the thermodynamic relationship between an ice arena’s ice sheet and building form. This exploration was conducted through an experiment focusing on the effects of architectural geometry, building material, and natural ventilation on ice heat gain. Ice arenas are giant refrigeration systems meant to sustain a sheet of ice in any climate, which is energy-intensive. There are many mechanical solutions to improving energy efficiency within ice arenas, leaving a gap for architectural solutions. Thermodynamics is how heat transfers or moves between space or objects. Heat or temperature wants to reach equilibrium, which means cold surfaces, objects, or air …

The G protein-coupled receptor 84 (GPR84), a medium-chain fatty acid receptor, has garnered attention because of its potential involvement in a range of metabolic conditions. However, the precise mechanisms underlying this effect remain elusive. Our study has shed light on the pivotal role of GPR84, revealing its robust expression and functional significance within brown adipose tissue (BAT). Mice lacking GPR84 exhibited increased lipid accumulation in BAT, rendering them more susceptible to cold exposure and displaying reduced BAT activity compared with their WT counterparts. Our in vitro experiments with primary brown adipocytes from GPR84-KO mice revealed diminished expression of thermogenic genes …
