Medication Use And Adherence In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Jennifer Marie Toth Harris Jan 2023

Medication Use And Adherence In Rheumatoid Arthritis, Jennifer Marie Toth Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background/Objectives

Adherence can impact the effectiveness of tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFis) in treating rheumatoid arthritis. If rheumatoid arthritis reaches the end-stage, joint replacement may be needed. Unplanned readmissions after joint replacement is a Medicare quality measure. The first objective of this study was to determine the optimal adherence threshold for TNFis in rheumatoid arthritis. Using that threshold and the traditional 0.8 threshold, the second objective was to find the relationship between adherence to TNFis and opioid use in rheumatoid arthritis. Finally, prediction of unplanned readmissions in patients who had a knee or hip arthroplasty was the final objective.

Using a qualitative exploratory approach, this multiple case study explored the lived experiences of 10 Black women presently working in senior leadership roles in four-year public institutions of higher learning. This study sought to contribute to a deeper understanding of …

The Presence And Prevalence Of Underqualified High School Science Teachers In Mississippi, Shelby Ann Watson Jan 2023

The Presence And Prevalence Of Underqualified High School Science Teachers In Mississippi, Shelby Ann Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With growth in STEM postsecondary programs and careers positioned as a national priority, ensuring that K-12 science classrooms are staffed with highly qualified teachers is an important step towards building student interest in STEM and preparing students for STEM careers. However, previous studies of out-of-field teaching have indicated that schools and districts across the country are hiring large numbers of underqualified teachers to fill high-needs positions, such as secondary science and mathematics. Complicating the issue is the fact that data regarding teacher shortages, vacancies, and underqualified teaching are often incomplete or inaccessible. Prior studies have found that underqualified teaching is …

Development Of Metformin Hydrochloride Oral Taste-Masked Sprinkle Formulation For Pediatric Use, Hawra Alhusaini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to develop a child-centered metformin hydrochloride (HCL) oral formulation by successfully masking its bitter taste and facilitating ease of administration. Hot-Melt Extrusion (HME) technology was used to extrude filaments containing metformin HCL with varying ratios of Eudragit® Polymers. Eudragit® E PO was used as a main excipient for its pH-dependency. Since it is only soluble in acidic pH up to pH 5.0, it would not release the drug in the saliva environment, which has a pH of approximately 6.8. Eudragit® RL PO and RS PO were added later on in order to further control …

Mechanisms And Consequences Of Competition Between Microstegium Vimineum And Native Plants And Their Relevance To Invasion Theory And Oak Woodland Restoration, Griffin L. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previous work has shown that ecological communities with high species diversity are resistant to invasion, but evidence is lacking in woodland restoration conditions with native groundcover and oak species for the competitively superior invader: Microstegium vimineum. I addressed the following questions: (1) Does diversity-mediated competitive resistance resist invasion by M. vimineum, and what is the competitive effect of M. vimineum on resident plant diversity? (2) How do aboveground and soil-mediated competitive effects of M. vimineum influence survival of two perennial forbs at two sites of different M. vimineum productivity? (3) Are there species differences in acorn supply and seed removal, …

Closing The Gap: Culturally Competent Consultations In Schools, Kimmely Mechelle Williams Jan 2023

Closing The Gap: Culturally Competent Consultations In Schools, Kimmely Mechelle Williams

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Poor academic achievement among minority students has historically been identified as one of the most pressing challenges of public education (Dorvil, 2011). However, even before the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) adoption, there has been a focus on what should be done to improve the academic achievement of the nation’s children. With each of its subsequent incarnations and legislative renaming, policymakers, educators, and researchers alike have sought to ensure that all children are afforded the opportunity to receive a high-quality education delivered by competent educators enabling them to reach predetermined but vaguely defined levels of proficiency. Despite best efforts, …

A New Acquisition Model For The Next Disaster: Overcoming Disaster Federalism Issues Through Effective Utilization Of The Strategic National Stockpile, Robert B. Handfield, Andrea S. Potrucco, Zhaohui Wu, Christopher R. Yukins, Tanner Slaughter

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Using primary data collected from interviews with federal and state government officials and secondary data related to PPE distribution and state healthcare statistics, we discovered evidence that the use of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) to distribute personal protective equipment to state and local agencies in need during the height of COVID-19 was indeed poorly designed to cope with the COVID-19 emergency, leaving many states with shortages of badly needed medical supplies. As a result, many states struggled to organize an uncoordinated procurement response – which we suggest is due to federalism issues. To overcome federalism challenges and increase future …

The Carceral Home, Kate Weisburd Jan 2023

The Carceral Home, Kate Weisburd

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In virtually all areas of law, the home is the ultimate constitutionally protected area, at least in theory. In practice, a range of modern institutions that target private life—from public housing to child welfare—have turned the home into a routinely surveilled space. Indeed, for the 4.5 million people on criminal court supervision, their home is their prison, or what I call a “carceral home.” Often in the name of decarceration, prison walls are replaced with restrictive rules that govern every aspect of private life and invasive surveillance technology that continuously records intimate information. While prisons have always been treated in …

Gambling On Growth: An Analysis Of The Early Impact Of Historical Horse Racing On Kentucky’S Thoroughbred Industry, Barrett W. Kerr

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

With a continuous decline in on-track wagering on Thoroughbred racing, racetrack operators are exploring alternative revenue sources to fund purses and create better quality racing. Historical Horse Racing (HHR), which represents one of the most recent advancements in parimutuel wagering, has become a popular system used by many states to offset the live wagering decline. Proponents of HHR suggest that this alternative wagering option will benefit the live racing industry. Using data from Kentucky racetracks from 2002 – 2021, this study examines the relationship between HHR wagering and key industry metrics, such as purses, on-track wagering, sales prices, and foal …

The Impact Of Gender Minority Stress On Eating Pathology And Body Checking Behaviors In Transgender And Non-Binary Adults, Klaudia Bialy

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Transgender and gender non-binary (TNB) individuals commonly report diminished mental health when compared to cisgender individuals. TNB individuals experience unique stressors due to their gender identity such as gender-based discrimination and victimization, internalized transphobia, and non-affirmation of their gender. Due to these unique stressors, TNB individuals experience elevated rates of psychological distress such as anxiety, depression, and suicidality. Additionally, TNB individuals report body image issues and disordered eating. This study examined if gender minority stress predicts the relationship between body checking behaviors and eating pathology amongst TNB individuals. Simple linear regression models were used to assess the possible impact gender …

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice — Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Kiel Brennan-Marquez Jan 2023

Role-Reversibility, Ai, And Equitable Justice — Or: Why Mercy Cannot Be Automated, Kiel Brennan-Marquez

Faculty Articles and Papers

A few years ago, we developed the concept of "role-reversibility" in Al governance: the idea that it matters whether a party exercising judgment is reciprocally vulnerable to the effects of judgment. This idea, we argued, supplies a deontic reason to maintain certain spheres of human judgment even if (or when) truly intelligent machines become demonstrably superior in every utilitarian sense. While computer science remains far from that holy grail, generative AI is raging through systems as diverse as healthcare, finance, advertising, law, and academe, making it imperative to further shore up our claim. We do so by situating role-reversibility within …

In Loco Reipublicae, Anne C. Dailey

Faculty Articles and Papers

. The Supreme Court has long held that children enjoy a range of constitutional rights and has emphasized the critical importance of many of these rights to children's development as democratic citizens. At the same time, the Court has been resolute in its protection of parents' near-absolute authority to control the upbringing of children. Indeed, the Supreme Court's steadfast commitment to broad parental rights under the Due Process Clause effectively diminishes, if not outright nullifies, the Court's stated protections for children as rights-bearing citizens. The stakes for children have only heightened as parents increasingly seek to exercise their authority to …

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Thalassia testudinum often dominates seagrass meadows of the Florida panhandle but few measurements of productivity, biomass, density, turnover or leaf area index in this region have been made. We targeted 5 estuaries located at similar latitudes, 30⁰ ± 0.3⁰N: Big Lagoon, Santa Rosa Sound, St. Andrew Bay, St. Joseph Bay, and St. George Sound. This study was one component of a collaborative partnership of state and local researchers examining factors preventing recovery in panhandle estuarine areas that had historically contained seagrass in the 1940s and 1950s. Measurements were made twice in 2016, once in June and then again in summer …
