Relationship Between Bats And Prairie-Dog (Cynomys Ludovicianus) Colonies In Western Kansas, Mario N. Rodriguez
Relationship Between Bats And Prairie-Dog (Cynomys Ludovicianus) Colonies In Western Kansas, Mario N. Rodriguez
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Although it is known that prairie dog colonies can increase biodiversity in the areas surrounding them, there is extraordinarily little known about the relationship between bats and black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). In a recent study from the Front Range of Colorado, several bat species were found to be consistently flying around prairie dog colonies, presumably foraging due to increased insect diversity and abundance. Despite the importance of prairie dogs to the ecosystem, prairie dog colonies are usually eradicated due to the perception that they adversely impact cattle grazing. If insectivorous bats are attracted to prairie dog colonies …
Methylation Patterns Across Tissue Type And Time In Peromyscus Leucopus: A Targeted Museum Study, Loryn Smith
Methylation Patterns Across Tissue Type And Time In Peromyscus Leucopus: A Targeted Museum Study, Loryn Smith
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Museum specimens are a vital data source for many types of studies. One relatively new use includes studying methylation patterns. Methylation patterns are a form of epigenetics or how gene expression changes without alteration of the genetic code. These patterns have been examined in many mammals. However, the focus has previously been on overall epigenetic patterns. Few studies have investigated whether methylation patterns differ across tissue types, time, or preservation method. In this study, I compared methylation patterns in muscle, liver, toe pads, and nasal bones from Peromyscus leucopus (white-footed mouse) museum specimens collected in 2022, 2018, 2014, and 2008 …

Amphibians remain an important model organism closely associated with environmental conditions and ecological processes. They are considered critical bioindicators of the relative health of ecosystems providing insights into levels of pollution, such as agricultural and industrial runoff, effects of UVB increases, ecosystem service functionality and much more (Rohman et al. 2021). Amphibians are an essential food source to organisms at higher trophic levels and to humans in developing countries (Schleich et al. 1996). Amphibians also provide pest control for agricultural and urban landscapes (Warkentin et al. 2009). Amphibians provide novel medicinal treatments for a wide variety of human ailments and …

Understanding The Value Of Friendships: Exploring The Different Characteristics Of Virtual World Friendships Compared To Real World Friendships, Samantha Baires
Understanding The Value Of Friendships: Exploring The Different Characteristics Of Virtual World Friendships Compared To Real World Friendships, Samantha Baires
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Research on video games, social media, and computer games has focused on specific social characteristics such as violence, communication, and social isolation. Most aspects of virtual world gaming and online relationships are considered inferior, if not damaging, to those who spend time on these platforms. Virtual relationships are often considered secondary to traditional relationships. Such relationships are seen as replacements for traditional friendships, leading to research focusing on replacement rather than value. Little research focuses on how a virtual world friendship compares to a traditional friendship and the value it may serve to individuals in the relationship. The present study …

North American grassland declines and increasing changes in land use patterns have revived the importance of studying grasslands and their inhabitants. Grassland breeding bird populations are declining rapidly, and conservation efforts are ramping up. Smoky Valley Ranch (SVR) owned by The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is in Logan County, Kansas. Surrounding private land is characteristically comprised of row crops, livestock agriculture, Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and a few patches of native and restored prairie. The study of obligate grassland birds utilizing this area during the breeding season is essential to the proliferation of grassland bird nesting habitat in western, Kansas. The …
The Transformation Of Cherokee Medicial Practices And The Hesitations That Surround Them, Rebecca Bills
The Transformation Of Cherokee Medicial Practices And The Hesitations That Surround Them, Rebecca Bills
Theses
Studies on traditional Cherokee medicine during the 1800s explained Cherokee religious beliefs and the treatments they used to heal the members of their community. However, no updated research has been done to see if Cherokees are still using traditional medicine and if they are, which kinds are they using in the 21st century. This is in part due to the fact that Native Americans and the U.S. government have a complicated relationship from centuries of mistreatment, broken treaties, and the removal from their ancestral homelands. This has created a distrust between native and non-natives. Today, traditional healers' identities are protected …
Habitat Associations And Fine-Scale Movements Of The Red-Spotted Toad (Anaxyrus Punctatus) In Kansas And The Efficacy Of Remote Telemetry For Monitoring Small-Scale Movements, Elisabeth Russell
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
As climate change progresses, arid-adapted anurans might be particularly susceptible to population declines because of their reliance on ephemeral pools for successful reproduction. Because arid-adapted anurans are difficult to study due to short active seasons and cryptic lifestyles, little is known about their habitat preferences. One such arid-adapted species is the Red-Spotted Toad (Anaxyrus punctatus; RST), a Kansas Species in Need of Conservation. Since this designation in 1987, little research has been conducted to understand their conservation needs. During the summers of 2021 and 2022, RST surveys were conducted both near areas where the species has historically been …

Automated vehicles pose challenges in various research domains, including robotics, machine learning, computer vision, public safety, system certification, and beyond. These vehicles autonomously handle navigation and locomotion, often requiring minimal user interaction, and can operate on land, in water, or in the air. In the context of aircraft, one specific application is Automated Aerial Refueling (AAR). Traditional aerial refueling involves a "tanker" aircraft using a mechanism, such as a rigid boom arm or a flexible hose, to transfer fuel to another aircraft designated as the "receiver". For AAR, the boom arm may be maneuvered automatically, or in certain instances the …

Investigating The Mechanism Of Tdp-43 Toxicity In Yeast: A Model For Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Cassidy Nicole Alspaugh
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes the degeneration of motor neurons which leads to loss of motor function and eventual death. Over 20 genes have been implicated in ALS’s pathogenesis, one being TARDBP, which codes for TDP-43. TDP-43 mislocalizes from the nucleus, accumulates, and then aggregates in the cytoplasm and is linked to cellular toxicity. We have modeled this aggregation and toxicity of TDP-43 in budding yeast. From genetic screens of human genes and their ability to modulate TDP-43 toxicity, we found 50 human genes that were able to reduce TDP-43 toxicity. 12 of these …

Synthesis Of Derivatives Of Hexafluoroisopropanol, Meshal Alghamdi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fluorinated organic molecules have significant potential in medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. Consequently, 20–25% of the FDA approved drugs contain at least one fluorine atom. Functional groups displaying high levels of fluorination are attracting new interest to expand the chemical space for drug development. A hexafluoroisopropanol (HFIP) group is one of these groups which combines high levels of fluorination with an adjacent alcohol. This functionality displays a unique hydrogen bond donor without any nucleophilicity. Recent studies have shown that the HFIP can be employed as a building block for the synthesis of drug-like molecules, and its incorporation into small molecules …

The Double Descent Behavior In A Two Layer Neural Network For Binary Classification, Chathurika Srimali Abeykoon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Machine learning and artificial intelligence have changed the world significantly in recent years. Its breakthrough innovations take machine learning to a whole new level where machines can learn to recognize tasks, inspired by the human brain's neural networks. The generally accepted belief about training these machines or models is that \larger models and more data are always better". In classical statistics, the test error is a \U-shaped" curve where the bigger and more complex models have higher test errors which is not favorable. But recent studies observed a surprising concept about test error called the double descent phenomenon where the …

Can Graphene-Coated Sand Enhance Water Reuse By Improving Water Quality In The Presence Of Municipal Treated Wastewater?, Madelyn Barber
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The need for alternative water sources is dramatically increasing. Therefore, it is essential to develop alternative water sources to meet the current water scarcity challenges. Water reclamation, recycling, and reuse involving treated municipal and or animal wastewater address these challenges by resolving water resource issues and creating new sources of high-quality water supplies. However, the presence of bacteria, high levels of nutrients, and turbidity, as well as the occurrence of chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) in the treated wastewater, combined with the willingness of the public to use treated wastewater can undermine the wide application of water reuse. Implementing affordable …

Reimagining The Radical: Gender, Genre, And Anti-Fascism In Women's Writing At Mid-Century, Allison Nick
Reimagining The Radical: Gender, Genre, And Anti-Fascism In Women's Writing At Mid-Century, Allison Nick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation looks at the work of four women writers—Martha Gellhorn, Elizabeth Bowen, Pearl S. Buck, and Rebecca West—who are united in their transnational commitment to critiquing the global rise of fascism and the fraught democratic imperatives of their own countries. “Reimagining the Radical” focuses on the temporal gap between modernism and postmodernism and is inspired by work from scholars like Marina MacKay, Lyndsey Stonebridge, and Beryl Pong to claim and define mid-century literature. By rethinking the bounds of modernism, “Reimagining the Radical” also seeks to fill the gaps in feminist history—between the suffragism of the early 20th century and …

The World Wide Web Of Women: A Case In Favor Of Global Feminist Coalitions In The Information Age, Hannah S. Phillips
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this thesis is to argue that online feminist coalitions can be both locally specific and globally accessible. Postcolonial feminist theorist Chandra Talpade Mohanty in her 1984 article “Under Western Eyes: Feminist Scholarship and Colonial Discourses,” argues that there is no real evidence to classify all women as a “Woman” because cultural differences and imbalances of power create a myriad of experiences that cannot be homogenized. However, Mohanty is not arguing that women do not have individual experiences with gender injustice. On the contrary, all women have experiences with gender injustice; these experiences are simply all not the …

Hiv-1 Tat And Neuroendocrine Aging: Potential Benefits Of Neurosteroid-Based Therapy To Attenuate Premature Age-Related Comorbidities In The Era Of Antiretroviral Therapy, Alaa Nader Qrareya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary objectives of this dissertation are to assess the interaction between human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) trans-activator of transcription (Tat) protein and neuroendocrine status on the pathology of Tat/age-related comorbidities and to investigate the potential benefit of hormonal therapy in attenuating Tat/age insults. The advent of combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has increased longevity among people living with HIV (PLWH). However, cART cannot fully eradicate viral reservoirs within the central nervous system (CNS). Therefore, ~50-60% of virally-suppressed PLWH experience neurological and psychological sequelae called “neuroHIV”. Moreover, PLWH are more vulnerable to developing premature age-related comorbidities. In PLWH, hypogonadism is common …

Detection Of Rayleigh Faded Signal Using Two Distributed Sensors, Sayantan Saha
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Distributed detection(DD) is an area of interest in the Cognitive Radio(CR) Network domain. With the help of geographically dispersed sensors and a Fusion Center(FC) (i.e. the network element which generates the global network decision), a DD system can determine the presence or absence of a primary user signal. This prevents any harmful interference by a secondary user who is trying to gain access to the unoccupied spectrum opportunistically. DD system gained its popularity in spectrum analysis due to the limited bandwidth of the reporting channels between the sensors and their fusion center.
