Gpcrs And Fibroblast Heterogeneity In Fibroblast-Associated Diseases, Nidhi V. Dwivedi, Souvik Datta, Karim El-Kersh, Ruxana Sadikot Md, Mrcp, Apar Kishor Ganti, Surinder K. Batra, Maneesh Jain

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are the largest and most diverse class of signaling receptors. GPCRs regulate many functions in the human body and have earned the title of "most targeted receptors". About one-third of the commercially available drugs for various diseases target the GPCRs. Fibroblasts lay the architectural skeleton of the body, and play a key role in supporting the growth, maintenance, and repair of almost all tissues by responding to the cellular cues via diverse and intricate GPCR signaling pathways. This review discusses the dynamic architecture of the GPCRs and their intertwined signaling in pathological conditions such as idiopathic …

Reconstructing The Germination Pathway From The Rafflesia Seed Transcriptome, Venkata Siva Sankar Maddu

Selected Full-Text Master Theses 2021-

Rafflesia (Rafflesiaceae) produces the largest flowers in the world but has no stems, roots, or leaves. It is a holoparasitic angiosperm that derives all its nutrients from its host vine, Tetrastigma. All species are also threatened with extinction, but propagating it has been incredibly challenging. Its germination from seed has never been observed. The thesis aims to reconstruct the germination pathway of Rafflesia from its published seed transcriptome to gain insight into its molecular genetics and understand what germination genes can be stimulated to facilitate infection of its host for ex-situ propagation. The published seed transcriptome of Rafflesia speciosa was …

Laid To Rust: Proposing Strict Liability In Tort For Prop Firearm Injuries Following The Alec Baldwin Shooting, Mark Edward Blankenship Jr., Joseph A. Ott Jan 2023

Laid To Rust: Proposing Strict Liability In Tort For Prop Firearm Injuries Following The Alec Baldwin Shooting, Mark Edward Blankenship Jr., Joseph A. Ott

Nevada Law Journal Forum

Prop gun safety standards are often a mixed bag. “Despite some industry reforms following previous tragedies, the federal workplace safety agency in the U.S. is silent on the issue of on-set gun safety.” Some states follow film labor union and movie studio guidelines. Other states have regulations on pyrotechnic devices, but not on prop guns. Thus, states should consider what successful legal course of action a wrongfully deceased heir can bring in the event that no criminal charges can be filed. This article proposes that the best regulatory approach and tort liability course of action is through (1) treating prop …

Development Of Narrow-Spectrum Agents And Mray Inhibitors Targeting Multidrug-Resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Tomayo Ireti Berida

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health burden. This airborne infectious disease is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and resulted in 1.6 million deaths globally in 2021. The emergence and spread of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) underscores the urgent need to discover and develop new agents, particularly those with narrow spectrum activity and those acting by novel mechanisms. Although broad-spectrum antibacterials have been successful in treating drug-resistant bacterial infections, including TB, there is a push toward the discovery and development of anti-TB agents with narrow-spectrum activity. This approach aims to limit the spread of resistance across …

The Efficacy Of Interventions Aimed At Reducing Early Childhood Toxic Stress: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Sheerah Neal Keith Jan 2023

The Efficacy Of Interventions Aimed At Reducing Early Childhood Toxic Stress: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Sheerah Neal Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The foundations of mental health and well-being are built in the first five years of life. Early childhood toxic stress (i.e., repeated, excessive, or prolonged activation of the body’s stress response systems) can undermine children’s sense of safety, sense of stability, and ability to form healthy relationships. The damaging effects of toxic stress can disrupt the normal course of brain, immune, and metabolic development, placing children at increased risk for mental and physical health problems that can last into adulthood. Counselors are uniquely qualified to help prevent and treat early childhood toxic stress. Yet, gaps between counseling theory, research, and …

“The War Will Be Over Sometime”: Female Authorship, Time, Trauma, And Healing In H.D.’S Wartime Works, Loren Samons Jan 2023

“The War Will Be Over Sometime”: Female Authorship, Time, Trauma, And Healing In H.D.’S Wartime Works, Loren Samons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As a tripartite collection of poems, at first glance H.D.'s Trilogy appears vastly different from her semi-autobiographical novel, Bid Me to Live, but the two are not as removed from each other as their formats and publication timelines might indicate. In fact, their connectedness is much less discreet than many scholars have suggested. In addition to being thematically similar in terms of their considerations of time and gender, Bid Me to Live and Trilogy could be viewed as works in conversation with each other, reflecting the development of the female authorial voice along a timeline of war-related trauma progression and …

Novel Formulation Strategies For Oral And Ocular Drug Delivery, Samir Senapati Jan 2023

Novel Formulation Strategies For Oral And Ocular Drug Delivery, Samir Senapati

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanoformulations such as nanoemulsions (NE), solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN), and nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) are colloidal particulate systems in the submicron size range and act as carriers of drug molecules. Their size varies from 10 to 1,000 nm (1). The capacity of these nanoparticles to permeate through many anatomical barriers, the prolonged release of their contents, and their stability on the nanometer scale have widely contributed to their efficacy in drug delivery. Owing to the advantages of nanoformulations, they were further explored in our studies to target different diseases like Dry eye disease (DED), glaucoma, and malaria.

Chapter 2 discusses …

The Influence Of Childhood Emotional Maltreatment And Exclusion On Distress Among Individuals With Social Anxiety Symptoms, Megan Perry Jan 2023

The Influence Of Childhood Emotional Maltreatment And Exclusion On Distress Among Individuals With Social Anxiety Symptoms, Megan Perry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is one of the most pervasive psychological conditions affecting emerging adults. Previous literature has demonstrated the importance of biological influences, individual difference characteristics, negative parenting practices, peer victimization experiences, and trauma/adversity in the development and onset of SAD. One unique adverse experience is childhood emotional maltreatment (CEM) or parent-based emotional abuse and/or neglect. CEM has been associated with more severe and persistent social anxiety symptoms in adults. In young adulthood, adverse experiences such as peer exclusion can exacerbate the cognitive and behavioral processes of SAD. However, the impact of early CEM experiences has yet to be …

Seafood Consumption During Harmful Algal Blooms: The Impact Of Information Regarding Safety And Health, Andrew Bechard, Corey Lang

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can cause massive fish kills all over the world. However, some commercially caught species are safe to eat. The fish safe for consumption are vastly different from the fish that wash up on shore. Prior research finds this difference in edibility is mostly unknown by consumers, and that the misperception of unhealthy and unsafe fish is the dominant paradigm. To date, there has been minimal research on the effect of disseminating this information regarding seafood health to consumers, and how consumption habits would change during a bloom. We implement a survey that presents respondents with information …

Effect Of The Glucocorticoid Receptor Antagonist Pt150 On Acquisition And Escalation Of Fentanyl Self-Administration Following Early-Life Stress, Michael T. Bardo, Cassie M. Chandler, Emily D. Denehy, Benjamin A. Carper, Mark A. Prendergast, Tracy L. Nolen

Psychology Faculty Publications

There is comorbidity between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and opioid use disorder (OUD), perhaps because PTSD-like stressful experiences early in life alter the hypothalamic–pituitary-adrenal stress axis to increase the risk for OUD. The present study determined if the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist PT150 reduces the escalation of fentanyl intake in rats exposed to a “two-hit” model of early-life stress (isolation rearing and acute stress). Male and female rats were raised during adolescence in either isolated or social housing and then were given either a single acute stress (restraint and cold-water swim) or control treatment in young adulthood. Rats were then treated …

The Power Of Education In A Globalised World: Challenging Geoeconomic Inequalities, Ozéias Rocha, Daniel Kamphambale, Cormac Macmahon, Jon Hans Coetzer, Lucía Morales

Articles

The globalization process has led to significant levels of controversy, as over the past few years, researchers have highlighted its negative connotations in terms of exacerbating economic inequalities, environmental degradation, exploitation of workers, loss of cultural diversity, and negative influence on democratic systems and financial stability. The negative connotation associated with the globalization process is not surprising. The implications for the global educational system significantly dominated by the influence of Western values, culture, and economic models based on consumerism to the detriment of traditional cultural and local identities have been eroded. The world economies are facing emerging areas of significant …

The Impact Of Demographic And Background Information On Public Perceptions Of Sex Offenders, Rylee D. Perez Jan 2023

The Impact Of Demographic And Background Information On Public Perceptions Of Sex Offenders, Rylee D. Perez

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Many studies have examined the public’s perception of crime in the United State of America. As a whole, the public tends to favor harsh punishments and longer sentences for most crimes. In addition, the public tends to feel even more negatively toward sex offenders, often supporting punitive measures and restrictions when sex offenders are released, such as lifetime registration on the national sex offender registry. Although perceptions of crime, and sex offenses in general, appear to be negative among the general public, more recent research indicates that these perceptions can be influenced if information about the crime and offender is …

Bat Activity And Insect Biomass On Mcconnell Airforce Base Compared To Surrounding Wichita Parks, Michaela Sielaff Jan 2023

Bat Activity And Insect Biomass On Mcconnell Airforce Base Compared To Surrounding Wichita Parks, Michaela Sielaff

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Bats are bioindicators of the communities to which they belong, giving researchers insight into the overall health of those ecosystems. Bats are also very adaptable and are capable of tolerating urbanization. Some species, such as Lasiurus borealis and Lasionycteris noctivagans may even benefit from adjacent industrial and commercial land use, although this is not the case for all bat species. In 2021, we began acoustic and mist net surveys of bats at McConnell Air Force Base (MAFB, or “base”) in Wichita, KS. However, no bats were captured or seen during mist net surveys, although some were detected acoustically over a …
