Improving Asthma Management Behaviors In School Nurses Through Facilitator Training And Supported Implementation, Mary D. Hacker-Taylor
Improving Asthma Management Behaviors In School Nurses Through Facilitator Training And Supported Implementation, Mary D. Hacker-Taylor
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Uncontrolled asthma in middle school age children and adolescents results in increased morbidity and often impairs a student’s ability to participate in school activities. School absenteeism is an unintended consequence which in turn can impact academic success. School nurses can improve student asthma outcomes through effective asthma management behaviors (AMB’s). The purpose of this multi-phase quality improvement DNP project was to improve both knowledge and confidence, and thereby improve AMB’s in Kentucky school nurses. A convenience sample of twelve nurses participated in the project. The American Lung Association’s (ALA) Kickin’ Asthma training was extended to all Kentucky school nurses who …

Bucknell Farm
The aim of this project is to reach a range of people who are suffering from food insecurity. Food insecurity is a spectrum; people have varying access to not only food, but to related resources such as cooking equipment and knowledge. Food insecurity is a broad term since there are varying reasons as to why people cannot access food such as transportation, money, and access. In most cases food insecurity is a symptom of a much bigger issue known as poverty. The typical person struggling with food insecurity suffers from both mental and physical complications such as decline in academic …

Analysis Of Eeg Signals Using Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos: A Review, Germ?N Rodr?Guez-Berm?Dez, Pedro J. Garc?A-Laencina
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory have been used in neurophysiology with the aim to understand the complex brain activity from electroencephalographic (EEG) signals. Although linear methods have been the most used in EEG analysis, nonlinear approaches have been increased their presence because they reveal aspects that cannot be measured from linear approaches. However, published works in this scientific field is still very low. This work describes the fundamentals of EEG signals and its basic concepts related with nonlinear dynamics and chaotic measures of complexity and stability. After that, a short review of the most common EEG-based applications is given in …

Symbolic Dynamics And Big Bang Bifurcation In Weibull-Gompertz-Fréchet’S Growth Models, J. Leonel Rocha, Abdel-Kaddous Taha, Danièle Fournier-Prunaret
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, motivated by the interest and relevance of the study of tumor growth models, a central point of our investigation is the study of the chaotic dynamics and the bifurcation structure of Weibull-Gompertz-Fr´echet’s functions: a class of continuousdefined one-dimensional maps. Using symbolic dynamics techniques and iteration theory, we established that depending on the properties of this class of functions in a neighborhood of a bifurcation point PBB, in a two-dimensional parameter space, there exists an order regarding how the infinite number of periodic orbits are born: the Sharkovsky ordering. Consequently, the corresponding symbolic sequences follow the usual unimodal …
Educational Attainment: An Analysis Of Teenage Parenthood And Dropout Prevention Programs, Megan Mccook
Educational Attainment: An Analysis Of Teenage Parenthood And Dropout Prevention Programs, Megan Mccook
Gettysburg Economic Review
This paper explores how teenage parenthood affects students’ high school education attainment, and evaluates the effectiveness of dropout prevention programs that offer on-site childcare. I use data from the High School Longitudinal Study (2009), collected by the National Center for Educational Statistics through the US Department of Education. These data combine survey responses from students, their parents, and school staff. Using school fixed effects and instrumental variable estimation I evaluate the impact of teenage parenthood on the probability of dropout. Female students with a child have, on average, 13.8 percentage points higher likelihood of dropping out of high school. The …

The Mental Health Impact Of Intensive Mothering Ideology On Contemporary Mothers, Allison Kresch Levine B.A., B.F.A., M.S.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
This research explored how exposure to Intensive Mothering Ideology (IMI) may impact maternal mental health in modern mothers. Susan Hays coined the IMI term in 1996, inspiring a significant body of research around the topic which has shown that mothers generally process intensive mothering discourse contextually with consideration for unique era-specific societal challenges (Constantinou, Varela, & Buckby, 2021; Hays, 1996). To this author’s knowledge, there have been no general examinations of the impact of IMI on maternal mental health since before the outbreak of COVID-19 (though there have been a few pointed examinations of IMI in relation to the pandemic). …

Innovation in ecological restoration is necessary to achieve the ambitious targets established in United Nations conventions and other global restoration initiatives. Innovation is also crucial for navigating uncertainties in repairing and restoring ecosystems, and thus practitioners often develop innovations at project design and implementation stages. However, innovation in ecological restoration can be hindered by many factors (e.g., time and budget constraints, and project complexity). Theory and research on innovation has been formally applied in many fields, yet explicit study of innovation in ecological restoration remains nascent. To assess the use of innovation in restoration projects, including its drivers and inhibitors, …

Comparing Substance Use Social Issues In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Regions In Kentucky, Erica C. Bellamy, James N. Maples
Comparing Substance Use Social Issues In Appalachian And Non-Appalachian Regions In Kentucky, Erica C. Bellamy, James N. Maples
Kentucky Journal of Undergraduate Scholarship
Substance use and abuse is not a uniquely Appalachian problem, but it remains a prevalent social problem for the geographical region. Kentucky has been one of the central states experiencing generations of substance abuse, ranging from methamphetamines to OxyContin to heroin. Eastern Kentucky, which includes a portion of Central Appalachia, has been a focal point for the proposed war against substance use. What remains undemonstrated in studies is exactly how substance abuse differs between the Central Appalachian counties of Eastern Kentucky and the remainder of the state, if any difference exists at all. In this study, the researchers examine how …

Defining The Nuanced Nature Of Redox Biology In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Emily C. Reed, Adam J. Case
Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health disorder that arises after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Despite affecting around 7% of the population, there are currently no definitive biological signatures or biomarkers used in the diagnosis of PTSD. Thus, the search for clinically relevant and reproducible biomarkers has been a major focus of the field. With significant advances of large-scale multi-omic studies that include genomic, proteomic, and metabolomic data, promising findings have been made, but the field still has fallen short. Amongst the possible biomarkers examined, one area is often overlooked, understudied, or inappropriately investigated: the field of …

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder And The Reduction Of Symptoms: A Review, Joshua Williams
Integrated Studies
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a life altering and often debilitating disorder that can have a profound effect on someone’s life. While there is currently no cure, research into different treatments for PTSD is ongoing. Conditions co-morbid with PTSD can cause difficulty in research. Several illegal drugs like psilocybin, cannabis, lysergic acid diethylamide, and mescaline have shown promise, but need further research as treatments for PTSD symptoms.
Keywords: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), symptoms, reduction
Examining Early Childhood Education's Influence On Future Success, Elisabeth Meacham
Examining Early Childhood Education's Influence On Future Success, Elisabeth Meacham
Integrated Studies
There are many factors that influence the long-term outcomes of a child. This paper researches the influence that early childhood education has on children from birth to compulsory school age and the child’s future success as a student and member of society. Notable long-term research studies that are examined in this paper are The Perry Preschool Study, Chicago Longitudinal Study, The Abecedarian Projects, and Tennessee Voluntary Pre-K Study. The majority of research indicates that children that receive quality early childhood services are more prepared for school, have better grades, go further in their educational careers, are less likely to do …

The Persuasive Nature Of Mythology And Folklore Through Human Behavior, Entertainment, And Popular Culture, Jaylan Valentine
Integrated Studies
The purpose of the collected research explained throughout this paper is to provide information on how humanity has been shaped through history. Through the recognition of mythology and folklore as the most influential aspects in the overall evolution of mankind. The creation and use of mythology and folklore are directly intertwined with the history that humanity teaches itself through years of schooling, recorded research, and oral communication. The sharing of mythology and folklore has changed throughout history as humanity continued to grow, starting from oral storytelling and arriving at present-day cinematic displays. Some of these cinematic representations are commonly known …
Global Bifurcation Of Positive Solutions For A Class Of Superlinear First-Order Differential Systems, Lijuan Yang, Ruyun Ma
Global Bifurcation Of Positive Solutions For A Class Of Superlinear First-Order Differential Systems, Lijuan Yang, Ruyun Ma
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
We are concerned with the first-order differential system of the form $$\left\{ \begin{array}{ll} u'(t)+a(t)u(t)=\lambda b(t) f(v(t-\tau(t))), &t\in\mathbb{R},\\ v'(t)+a(t)v(t)=\lambda b(t)g(u(t-\tau(t))), &t\in\mathbb{R},\\ \end{array} \right. $$ where $\lambda\in\mathbb{R}$~is a parameter. $a,b\in C(\mathbb{R},[0,+\infty))$ are two $\omega$-periodic functions such that $\int_0^\omega a(t)\text{d}t>0$,~$\int_0^\omega b(t)\text{d}t>0$,~$\tau\in C(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{R})$ is an $\omega$-periodic function. The nonlinearities~$f,g\in C(\mathbb{R},(0,+\infty))$~are two nondecreasing continuous functions and satisfy superlinear conditions at infinity.~By using the bifurcation theory,~we will show the existence of an unbounded component of positive solutions, which is bounded in positive $\lambda$-direction.

On The Properties Of Solutions For Nonautonomous Third-Order Stochastic Differential Equation With A Constant Delay, Ayman Mohammed Mahmoud, Doaa Ali Mohamed Bakhit
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
In this work, complete Lyapunov functionals (LFs) are constructed and used for the established conditions on the nonlinear functions appearing in the main equation, to guarantee stochastically asymptotically stable (SAS), uniformly stochastically bounded (USB) and uniformly exponentially asymptotically stable (UEAS) in probability of solutions to the nonautonomous third-order stochastic differential equation (SDE) with a constant delay as \begin{align*} \begin{split} \dddot{x}(t)&+a(t)f(x(t),\dot{x}(t))\ddot{x}(t)+b(t)\phi(x(t))\dot{x}(t) +c(t)\psi(x(t-r))\\&+g(t,x)\dot{\omega}(t)=p(t,x(t),\dot{x}(t),\ddot{x}(t)). \end{split} \end{align*} In Section 4, we give two numerical examples as an application to illustrate the results.
On $\Gamma$-Hypersemigroups, Niovi Kehayopulu
On $\Gamma$-Hypersemigroups, Niovi Kehayopulu
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
The results on $\Gamma$-hypersemigroups are obtained either as corollaries of corresponding results on $\vee e$ or $poe$-semigroups or on the line of the corresponding results on $le$-semigroups. It has come to our attention that Theorem 3.22 in [4] cannot be obtained as corollary to Theorem 2.2 of the same paper as for a $\Gamma$-hypersemigroup, $({\cal P}^*(M),\Gamma,\subseteq)$ is a $\vee e$-semigroup and not an $le$-semigroup. Also on p. 1850, l. 12 in [4], the "$le$-semigroup" should be changed to "$\vee e$-semigroup". In the present paper we prove Theorems 3.26 and 3.28 stated without proof in [4]. On this occasion, some further …

The Generalized Lyapunov Function As Ao’S Potential Function: Existence In Dimensions 1 And 2, Haoyu Wang, Wenqing Hu, Xiaoliang Gan, Ping Ao
The Generalized Lyapunov Function As Ao’S Potential Function: Existence In Dimensions 1 And 2, Haoyu Wang, Wenqing Hu, Xiaoliang Gan, Ping Ao
Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works
By using Ao's decomposition for stochastic dynamical systems, a new notion of potential function has been introduced by Ao and his collabora-tors recently. We show that this potential function agrees with the generalized Lyapunov function of the deterministic part of the stochastic dynamical sys-tem. We further prove the existence of Ao's potential function in dimensions 1 and 2 via the solution theory of first-order partial differential equations. Our framework reveals the equivalence between Ao's potential function and Lyapunov function, the latter being one of the most significant central notions in dynamical systems. Using this equivalence, our existence proof can also …

In this article, using critical point theory and variational methods, we investigate the existence of at least three solutions for a class of double eigenvalue discrete anisotropic Kirchhoff-type problems. An example is presented to demonstrate the applicability of our main theoretical findings.
What Is The Optimal Timing Of Embryo Biopsy For Diagnosing Genetic Abnormalities?, Nekhama Riznyk
What Is The Optimal Timing Of Embryo Biopsy For Diagnosing Genetic Abnormalities?, Nekhama Riznyk
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Introduction and Purpose: This paper examines current trends in assisted reproductive technology, specifically the use of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD to help in the preimplantation detection of genetic abnormalities such as monogenetic diseases and aneuploidy. PGD can be carried out in different stages, and the timing of the procedure has become one of the major issues in implementation. Three major stages of biopsy have been applied when carrying out PGD: Polar body biopsy (pre-conception), cleavage stage biopsy (3 days after conception), and blastocyst stage biopsy (6 days after conception). The purpose of the paper was to explore these stages and …

Improving The Prediction And Management Of Intrauterine Growth Restriction, Shulamis Sadowsky
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is a potentially fatal and often missed obstetric complication. The fetus is deprived of vital blood, oxygen, and nutrients due to faulty maternofetal circulation, leading to a severe lack of fetal growth. Since current prenatal testing is highly ineffective at diagnosing the condition, many babies with IUGR are negatively impacted before, during, and after birth. This paper assesses alternative and innovative detection and management methods of IUGR. Current routine prenatal care includes simple fundal height measurements to screen for IUGR. This analysis finds that other testing may increase the rate of detection of the disease. Maternal …

Can Physicians Transfer Bacteria Onto Patients Through Their Neckties?, Alexandra Pinkhas
Can Physicians Transfer Bacteria Onto Patients Through Their Neckties?, Alexandra Pinkhas
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Hospital-acquired infections are exacerbated by the presence of transmission agents such as bacteria on neckties. Physicians can put patients at risk of infections if bacteria contaminate their ties during their normal hospital routines. In the hospital setting, some of the most common bacteria include Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridioides difficile. Studies have shown that neckties can act as transmission agents, especially when they come into contact with patients. Additionally, the type of material used to make a necktie determines the viability of bacteria. Wearing neckties increases risk for …
Intraoral Appliance Therapy - A Better Alternative For Apnea Than Cpap?, Bryan Teigman
Intraoral Appliance Therapy - A Better Alternative For Apnea Than Cpap?, Bryan Teigman
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition where there is a physiologic hindrance of airflow to the lungs, triggering the brain to interfere with the sleep cycle and awaken an individual to provide sufficient oxygen flow. For years, the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine has been the gold standard of care for patients suffering from OSA. Nonetheless, the machine has its flaws of being bulky, noisy, and other side effects, causing a low adherence rate and thus a lower relief rate of OSA symptoms. Accordingly, there have been many researchers seeking a more effective way to treat OSA, such …
