Gender Responsive Pedagogy Practices: Secondary School Science Teachers In Ethiopia, Mollaw Abrha, Asrat Dagnew Kelkay, Amera Seifu
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper examines the current status of secondary school science teachers' gender-responsive pedagogy (GRP) practices. Women’s participation in secondary school teaching is a major concern in many regions of the world. The use of instructional strategies that promote gender inclusion and sensitivity in initial teacher training is very important in the development of teachers. In this paper, the use of gender-responsive pedagogy in Ethiopia’s secondary school program is highlighted. Using data from baseline, midterm, and end-line surveys, the paper addresses how tutors and mentors use gender-responsive pedagogy and the changes that have occurred as a result. The study adopted a …
Veiled Figures: Attached Settler Women In Andaman’S Post-Colonial Archive, Raka Banerjee
Veiled Figures: Attached Settler Women In Andaman’S Post-Colonial Archive, Raka Banerjee
Journal of International Women's Studies
Dominant discourse on India’s eastern Partition (1947) has constructed settlement as a masculine prerogative and man as the settler prototype. Women were eligible for rehabilitation on account of being “attached” to a male guardian, who would be assigned the head of the household in granting state benefits. In the case of these attached settler women transported by the state to Andaman Islands, a range of marginalities–region, gender, caste, and class–intersect with each other to create a veiled figure. The essay locates the settler women in the island’s post-colonial government archive to bring out the state’s construction of gendered settler subjecthood. …

Modern Articulations Of Gender Parity: The ‘New Woman’ Debate In The British Victorian Era And The Modern Muslim World, Maha F. Habib
Modern Articulations Of Gender Parity: The ‘New Woman’ Debate In The British Victorian Era And The Modern Muslim World, Maha F. Habib
Journal of International Women's Studies
Within the ‘New Woman’ debates within the Victorian era in Britain and the modern Muslim world (the areas of the former Ottoman Empire), one can witness a powerful feminist consciousness and astounding consistencies in the quest for gender equality, despite the difference in religious traditions, contexts, and contingencies. The debates attest to a consistency in feminist goals and challenges across time and space. The challenges include: intimate and long-standing linkages between scriptural traditions and the social order; interpretative legacies on women and their ‘nature’ that solidified cultural understandings of gender; and the relationship of these legacies to structures of power, …

Bridging Knowledge Systems In The Peruvian Andes: Plurality, Co-Creation, And Transformative Socio-Ecological Solutions To Climate Change, Domenique Ciavattone
Capstone Collection
In the current era of anthropogenic climate change, Quechua farmers in the Peruvian Andes are some of the most impacted by, yet some of the lowest contributors to global warming. Dominant Western systems alone have proven insufficient in tackling the climate crisis, and there have been increasing efforts to elevate and center Indigenous voices and epistemologies when addressing climate change. Researchers and communities are calling for a bridging of knowledge systems, in which Indigenous and Western methods collaborate to co-create innovative solutions to climate challenges. This research sought to explore methods and successes in bridging Indigenous and Western knowledge systems …

BACKGROUND: Microphthalmia, anophthalmia, and coloboma (MAC) spectrum disease encompasses a group of eye malformations which play a role in childhood visual impairment. Although the predominant cause of eye malformations is known to be heritable in nature, with 80% of cases displaying loss-of-function mutations in the ocular developmental genes OTX2 or SOX2, the genetic abnormalities underlying the remaining cases of MAC are incompletely understood. This study intended to identify the novel genes and pathways required for early eye development. Additionally, pathways involved in eye formation during embryogenesis are also incompletely understood. This study aims to identify the novel genes and pathways …

Responsible Use Of Race In Research Workshop, N Mariam Salas, Martha Carvour
HSC Education Days
Background: Clinical outcomes stratified by race have been used to determine guidelines and treatment plans despite evidence that racial data is unreliable at best and misleading at the worst. There is growing evidence that the misrepresentation of race in medical research may cause erroneous racial profiling, an inaccurate attribution of disease outcomes to biological markers while missing the impact of social determinants of health, and worsening of health care disparities. There is also a belief amongst basic scientists that racial inequities do not impact their professional work or environments. Our curriculum seeks to guide basic science researchers to rethink research …

Heterogeneous Grouping And Reciprocal Peer Teaching In Anatomy Medical Education, Julia A. Jordon, Rebecca S. Hartley
Heterogeneous Grouping And Reciprocal Peer Teaching In Anatomy Medical Education, Julia A. Jordon, Rebecca S. Hartley
HSC Education Days
To improve student performance in anatomy, we introduced two teaching interventions: competence-based heterogeneous (CBH) group formation and reciprocal peer teaching (RPT) to two successive medical school cohorts. Independently, CBH and RPT elevate outcomes of lower-performing students without negatively impacting higher-performing students (Donovan, 2018 & Pizzimenti, 2016). Clinical Morphology is a classroom and lab-based active-learning block designed around small groups that were historically formed by random assignment. In this study, entering medical students were administered a pre-quiz to stratify them into quartiles, after which CBH groups of six to eight students were formed. Groups were divided into two to four lab …

Sequencing high molecular weight (HMW) DNA with long-read and linked-read technologies has promoted a major increase in more complete genome sequences for nonmodel organisms. Sequencing approaches that rely on HMW DNA have been limited to larger organisms or pools of multiple individuals, but recent advances have allowed for sequencing from individuals of small-bodied organisms. Here, we use HMW DNA sequencing with PacBio long reads and TELL-Seq linked reads to assemble and annotate the genome from a single individual feather louse (Brueelia nebulosa) from a European Starling (Sturnus vulgaris). We assembled a genome with a relatively high …

House geckos share living quarters with humans in the tropical and subtropical regions inhabited by these reptiles. Gecko behavior, biological traits, continuous exposure to suspended particulate matter 0 µm in diameter (PM10) and dust, as well as status as exotic species, motivated the choice of these species to examine environmental exposure to ambient air pollutants, in particular metals, and subsequent accumulation in these organisms. One part of the study was conducted in Tamaulipas (Mexico) where Hemydactylus frenatus is abundant in urban and industrial environments, the other part was conducted in Andalucia (Spain) where Tarentola mauritanica is found in similar environments. …

Certain selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) have anti-inflammatory effects in preclinical models, and recent clinical studies suggest that fluvoxamine can prevent deterioration in patients with COVID-19, possibly through activating sigma 1 receptors (S1Rs). Here we examined potential mechanisms contributing to these effects of fluvoxamine and other SSRIs using a well-characterized model of pro-inflammatory stress in rat hippocampal slices. When hippocampal slices are exposed acutely to lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a strong pro-inflammatory stimulus, basal synaptic transmission in the CA1 region remains intact, but induction of long-term potentiation (LTP), a form of synaptic plasticity thought to contribute to learning and memory, is completely …

Endogenous L- To D-Amino Acid Residue Isomerization Modulates Selectivity Between Distinct Neuropeptide Receptor Family Members, Baba M. Yussif, Cole V. Blasing, James W. Checco
Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications
The L- to D-amino acid residue isomerization of neuropeptides is an understudied post-translational modification found in animals across several phyla. Despite its physiological importance, little information is available regarding the impact of endogenous peptide isomerization on receptor recognition and activation. As a result, the full roles peptide isomerization play in biology are not well understood. Here, we identify that the Aplysia allatotropin-related peptide (ATRP) signaling system utilizes L- to D-residue isomerization of one amino acid residue in the neuropeptide ligand to modulate selectivity between two distinct G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). We first identified a novel receptor for ATRP that is …

Upon trauma, the adult murine peripheral nervous system (PNS) displays a remarkable degree of spontaneous anatomical and functional regeneration. To explore extrinsic mechanisms of neural repair, we carried out single-cell analysis of naïve mouse sciatic nerve, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and crushed sciatic nerves at 1 day, 3 days, and 7 days following injury. During the first week, monocytes and macrophages (Mo/Mac) rapidly accumulate in the injured nerve and undergo extensive metabolic reprogramming. Proinflammatory Mo/Mac with a high glycolytic flux dominate the early injury response and rapidly give way to inflammation resolving Mac, programmed toward oxidative phosphorylation. Nerve crush injury …

HSC Education Days
To assist the HSC Colleges in meeting their Interprofessional Education accreditation requirements, and prepare students for effective patient centered practice, the HSC Office of Interprofessional Education designed and implemented an innovative interprofessional education (IPE) Honors program (the first in the United States) in the Summer of 2019. The standard definition of IPE is, “Interprofessional Education happens when two or more professionals learn with, and from each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.” (WHO, 2010) This program was built through a dynamic and responsive partnership with health professions students from multiple programs. The program was piloted in the …
