Based on review and critical analysis of the literature regarding the contents and physiological effects of coffee related to physical and cognitive performance conducted by experts in the field and selected members of the International Society of Sports Nutrition (ISSN), the following conclusions represent the official Position of the Society:

(1) Coffee is a complex matrix of hundreds of compounds. These are consumed with broad variability based upon serving size, bean type (e.g. common Arabica vs. Robusta), and brew method (water temperature, roasting method, grind size, time, and equipment).

(2) Coffee’s constituents, including but not limited to caffeine, have neuromuscular, …

Promoting Positive Sexual Health Behaviors Among Rural College Students: Results Of A Targeted Sti Prevention Program, Julie Loyke Jul 2023

Promoting Positive Sexual Health Behaviors Among Rural College Students: Results Of A Targeted Sti Prevention Program, Julie Loyke

Doctoral Projects

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a significant public health concern, with 26 million new cases diagnosed annually in the U.S. Emerging adults aged 18 to 25 years, which are included in the age group of Americans who have the highest rates for the three most common STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HPV (cdc.gov., 2020). Unfortunately, there is a paucity of research on the effects of STI education interventions on the attitudes and knowledge regarding STIs in this age group, especially in rural youth. While STI rates are high among adolescents and young adults nationally, rural youth have different behavioral risk factors …

Trait-based approaches that complement taxonomy-based studies have increased in popularity among the scientific community over the last decades. The collection of biological and ecological characteristics of species (i.e., traits) provides insight into species and ecosystem vulnerability to environmental and anthropogenic changes, as well as ecosystem functioning. Here, we present the FUN Azores trait database, describe our approach, evaluate its scope, compare it to other marine trait databases, and explore the spatial distribution of its traits with “functional maps.” While most of the available trait databases to date contain essential information to understand the functional diversity of a taxonomic or functional …

Examining Protein Localization Via Fluorescence Microscopy In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Lewis Barr, Richard H. Adams, Ellen France Phd

Biology Theses

Twenty-seven years ago, Saccharomyces cerevisiae became the first eukaryote to have its full genome sequenced, thus leading to the discovery that 30% of genes related to human diseases are orthologous to those in S. cerevisiae. Since then, 75% of the proteome has had its localization classified, and we sought to fill the remaining gaps of knowledge by identifying the localization of three proteins: Fsh3, Gid10, and Ade13, which function as a serine hydrolase, ubiquitin ligase, and adenylosuccinate lyase, respectively. To visualize cellular localization, we used a C-terminal GFP tagging strategy and subsequent fluorescence microscopy. Through colocalization analyses, we identified …

Striped Expression Of Leucine-Rich Repeat Proteins Coordinates Cell Intercalation And Compartment Boundary Formation In The Early Drosophila Embryo, Chloe A. Kuebler, Adam C. Pare Jul 2023

Striped Expression Of Leucine-Rich Repeat Proteins Coordinates Cell Intercalation And Compartment Boundary Formation In The Early Drosophila Embryo, Chloe A. Kuebler, Adam C. Pare

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Planar polarity is a commonly observed phenomenon in which proteins display a consistent asymmetry in their subcellular localization or activity across the plane of a tissue. During animal development, planar polarity is a fundamental mechanism for coordinating the behaviors of groups of cells to achieve anisotropic tissue remodeling, growth, and organization. Therefore, a primary focus of developmental biology research has been to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying planar polarity in a variety of systems to identify conserved principles of tissue organization. In the early Drosophila embryo, the germband neuroectoderm epithelium rapidly doubles in length along the anterior-posterior axis through a …

Did The Bronze Age Deforestation Of Europe Affect Its Climate? A Regional Climate Model Study Using Pollen-Based Land Cover Reconstructions, Gustav Strandberg, Jie Chen, Ralph Fyfe, Erik Kjellström, Johan Lindström, Anneli Poska, Qiong Zhang, Marie José Gaillard

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Abstract. This paper studies the impact of land use and land cover change (LULCC) on the climate around 2500 years ago (2.5 ka), a period of rapid transitions across the European landscape. One global climate model was used to force two regional climate models (RCMs). The RCMs used two land cover descriptions. The first was from a dynamical vegetation model representing potential land cover, and the second was from a land cover description reconstructed from pollen data by statistical interpolation. The two different land covers enable us to study the impact of land cover on climate conditions. Since the difference …

Early Stage Or Curable Cancer Diagnoses In Minorities: A Journey Of Survivors, Lora Asberry

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Patients diagnosed with early-staged or curable forms of cancer experience physical, as well as, mental challenges associated with disease progression and treatment. Previous studies have demonstrated that minorities and underrepresented communities did not receive the same level of care in comparison to their non-minority counterparts. Previous studies have also demonstrated that health disparities among minorities affected their cancer journey. This study addressed: how medical disparities varied between minorities and non-minorities, the overall effects of the cancer diagnoses in minorities compared to non-minorities, whether these perspectives differed in male vs. female participants, and whether there were any possible communication barriers between …

Multifunctional Graphene–Polymer Nanocomposite Sensors Formed By One-Step In Situ Shear Exfoliation Of Graphite, Ali Ashraf, Elizabeth Chang, Md Ashiqur Rahman, Dipannita Ghosh, Nazmul Islam, Jennifer K. Lynch-Branzoi

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Graphene nanocomposites are a promising class of advanced materials for sensing applications; yet, their commercialization is hindered due to impurity incorporation during fabrication and high costs. The aim of this work is to prepare graphene–polysulfone (G−PSU) and graphene–polyvinylidene fluoride (G−PVDF) nanocomposites that perform as multifunctional sensors and are formed using a one-step, in situ exfoliation process whereby graphite is exfoliated into graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) directly within the polymer. This low-cost method creates a nanocomposite while avoiding impurity exposure since the raw materials used in the in situ shear exfoliation process are graphite and polymers. The morphology, structure, thermal properties, and …

The Resilience Of Juvenile Acropora Corals When Exposed To Artificial Light At Night, Commonly Associated With Coastal Urbanisation, Celie Mullen Jul 2023

The Resilience Of Juvenile Acropora Corals When Exposed To Artificial Light At Night, Commonly Associated With Coastal Urbanisation, Celie Mullen

The Plymouth Student Scientist

In recent years, artificial light pollution has expanded in area and concentration due to global population growth and technological advances in lighting. The impacts of artificial light at night (ALAN) are now well acknowledged within terrestrial biomes however, influences to surrounding coastal marine ecosystems are poorly recognised. Similarly, research has only just begun to reveal the extent of damage to coral reef systems, which have both substantial ecological and economic importance. However, the survival of important reef building Scleractinia within areas of ALAN is relatively unknown. Here a series of investigations underpin the extent of damage of short and long …

Impacts Of Hydrodynamic Regimes On The Resuspension Of Particulate Matter Within A Seagrass Restoration Site: Jennycliff Bay, Plymouth Sound, Uk, Laura M. Bevington

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Seagrass habitats are ecosystem engineers, providing a multitude of valuable ecosystem services that benefit the environment and human populations. Seagrass meadows are declining at an enhanced rate; therefore, in recent years restoration efforts have increased. However, many projects have had limited rates of success. Site suitability assessments are conducted ahead of plantation efforts; however, some regimes are seldom considered despite them providing important insights into a site’s environmental conditions. For example, light availability to the benthos is a key component of restoration success and this is affected by hydrodynamic processes impacting the local resuspension regime of suspended particulate matter (SPM), …

Breast cancer is composed of metabolically coupled cellular compartments with upregulation of TP53 Induced Glycolysis and Apoptosis Regulator (TIGAR) in carcinoma cells and loss of caveolin 1 (CAV1) with upregulation of monocarboxylate transporter 4 (MCT4) in fibroblasts. The mechanisms that drive metabolic coupling are poorly characterized. The effects of TIGAR on fibroblast CAV1 and MCT4 expression and breast cancer aggressiveness was studied using coculture and conditioned media systems and in-vivo. Also, the role of cytokines in promoting tumor metabolic coupling via MCT4 on cancer aggressiveness was studied. TIGAR downregulation in breast carcinoma cells reduces tumor growth. TIGAR overexpression in carcinoma …

Increasing Rye Cover Crop Biomass Production After Corn Residue Removal To Balance Economics And Soil Health, Sabrina J. Ruis, Humberto Blanco-Canqui, Paul J. Jasa, Glen Slater, Richard B. Ferguson

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Low or variable cover crop (CC) biomass production could limit CC benefits. Longer CC growing periods via late termination could increase CC benefits, especially under limited crop residue return. We studied whether early (2–3 wk before planting)- or late (at planting)-terminated winter rye (Secale cereale L.) CC maintains soil properties, crop yields, and farm income under 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% corn (Zea mays L.) residue removal in rainfed and irrigated no-till in the U.S. Great Plains after 6 yr. Early-terminated CCs produced < 1 Mg ha-1 of biomass while late-terminated CCs averaged 1.6 Mg ha-1 at the rainfed …

High-magnitude mass flows can have a pervasive geomorphological legacy, yet the short-term response of valley floors to such intense disturbances is poorly known and poses significant observational challenges in unstable landscapes. We combined satellite remote sensing, numerical modeling, and field observations to reconstruct the short-term geomorphological response of river channels directly affected by the 7 February 2021 ice-rock avalanche−debris flow in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India. The flow deposited 10.4 ± 1.6 Mm3 of sediment within the first 30 km and in places reset the channel floor to a zero-state condition, requiring complete fluvial re-establishment. In the 12 months post-event, 7.0 …

Effects Of Cholinesterase Inhibition On Attention And Working Memory In Lewy Body Dementias, Sean James Fallon, Olivia Plant, Younes A. Tabi, Sanjay G. Manohar, Masud Husain

School of Psychology

Cholinesterase inhibitors are frequently used to treat cognitive symptoms in Lewy body dementias (Parkinson’s disease dementia and Dementia with Lewy bodies). However, the selectivity of their effects remains unclear. In a novel rivastigmine-withdrawal design, Parkinson’s disease dementia and Dementia with Lewy bodies patients were tested twice: once when taking rivastigmine as usual and once when they had missed one dose. In each session, they performed a suite of tasks (sustained attention, simple short-term recall, distractor resistance and manipulating the focus of attention) which allowed us to investigate the cognitive mechanisms through which rivastigmine affects attentional control. Consistent with previous literature, …

This review traces the evolution of RHD genotyping from the very early days of the discovery of Rh polypeptides in 1982, and the pioneering work of the late 1980s and early 1990s that made the whole approach of RH genotyping possible. This work is often overlooked in contemporary Rh literature with citations of reviews being used which often do not give the complete background story. We have attempted to rectify this here. This review focuses primarily on RHD genotyping, primarily because of space constraints not to include RHCE but also because RHD is of greater clinical significance. In Europe many …

The Effects Of Low And High Gravity On Neurospora Crassa, Siobhan Cleveland, James M. Livengood, Michael K. Watters

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

We studied the effects of different gravity levels on Neurospora crassa and its morphology. This research was conducted by simulating low and high gravity effects in different operating procedures. For the low gravity simulation, the experiment was conducted by using a clinostat to constantly disorient the samples at a very slow rate. For the high gravity simulation, N. crassa was subjected to different amounts of g forces by placing the samples in a centrifuge and subjected the samples to increasing amounts of revolutions per minute. The results of these experiments conclude that in low-gravity situations, the N. crassa showed sparse …
