The impact of the built environment, urban form, and urban morphology on individual's perception, experience and wellbeing has been the focus of many studies in the past few decades. Additionally, the impact of the built environment and its spatial characteristics has been recently studied from different approaches. Literature review shows that various research has been conducted on the impact of the built environment and travelers’ behavior and modal choice. However, few studies have been conducted on the impact of the built environment on travelers’ perception during mobility. Thus, this manuscript attempts to theoretically establish a link between the epistemology of …
Missing Value Imputation For Single Omics And Multi-Omics Data, Meng Song
Missing Value Imputation For Single Omics And Multi-Omics Data, Meng Song
Dissertations
The integration analyses of multi-omics data have the advantages of extending our understanding of biological system across multiple omics layers, unraveling the functional mechanism of complex disease development, and refining the discovery of novel drug targets. However, multi-omics studies often face challenges such as data heterogeneity, missing values problem, interpretability, and imbalance classes. Among these challenges, the missing values problem is a critical issue for large cohort studies as not all samples will get a complete measurement for all the omics layers. To address the problem of missing values in multi-omics data, I focused on the imputation of completely missing …

A Qualitative Case Study Examining Discrepancy Between Prospective Outcome Using Rom And Narrative Client Retrospective View, Jarom J. R. Hickenlooper
A Qualitative Case Study Examining Discrepancy Between Prospective Outcome Using Rom And Narrative Client Retrospective View, Jarom J. R. Hickenlooper
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis is a qualitative case study which examines an observed discrepancy in psychotherapy outcomes between prospective routine outcome measurements (ROM) and narrative retrospective assessment by two clients. Although ROM has proven to be effective in improving therapy efficiency and effectiveness (De Jong et al., 2021; Lambert et al., 2018), recent research investigates discrepancies between ROM categorizations of improvement and deterioration and the lived experience of the client. Researchers have found that the narratives delivered through client structured interviews can provide additional and more nuanced insight into therapy outcomes, which can complement and enhance ROM (Roubal et al., 2018; De …

Investigating The Costs And Benefits Of A Nutritional Fungal Endosymbiont, Nolan L. Perryman
Investigating The Costs And Benefits Of A Nutritional Fungal Endosymbiont, Nolan L. Perryman
Biology ETDs
Research on insect symbiosis is dominated by insect–bacteria models, however, the role of fungal symbionts in insects is poorly understood. Fungi are de novo synthesizers of many essential nutrients, therefore, insect–fungal pairings can permit specialization on nutritionally deprived diets. Here, I address the costs and benefits of symbiosis using a system of beetle–fungal symbiosis. Specifically, I ask 1) when reared on a low-quality diet, does the beetle increase the number of viable symbionts to compensate for a heightened nutritional demand, and 2) Is the conferred fitness benefit of the symbiont only present in low-quality diets? When reared on low-quality diets, …

A Narrow Band Of Image Dimensions Is Critical For Face Recognition, Timothy J. Andrews, Daniel Rogers, Mila Mileva, David M. Watson, Ao Wang, A. Mike Burton
School of Psychology
A key challenge in human and computer face recognition is to differentiate information that is diagnostic for identity from other sources of image variation. Here, we used a combined computational and behavioural approach to reveal critical image dimensions for face recognition. Behavioural data were collected using a sorting and matching task with unfamiliar faces and a recognition task with familiar faces. Principal components analysis was used to reveal the dimensions across which the shape and texture of faces in these tasks varied. We then asked which image dimensions were able to predict behavioural performance across these tasks. We found that …

The onset of prehistoric farming brought unprecedented changes to landscapes and their biodiversity. Past biodiversity patterns are broadly understood for different parts of Europe, and demonstrate trajectories that have been linked to prehistoric and historic demographic transitions, and associated land-use practices. To our knowledge, this paper is the first attempt to directly link evidence of agricultural practice from the archaeological record to biodiversity patterns. Records of fossil pollen are used to estimate plant and landscape diversity patterns, and novel approaches are employed to analyse 1194 harmonised archaeobotanical samples (plant macrofossil remains) spanning the prehistoric and Roman periods, from southern England. …

Change In Grassland Science: Implications For Training, Research And Grassland Societies, G. Lemaire, R. J. Wilkins, J. Hodgson
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
In most of the world the priority for production-oriented research has been succeeded by the need for grassland research to focus on systems which satisfy requirements relating to the stability and protection of land, water and atmospheric resources and to biodiversity, in addition to production efficiency. This dictates not only a new approach to research, but also new approaches for the organisation of research, the training and development of research scientists and the activities of Grassland Societies and associated organisations.

Self-Supervised Learning Application On Covid-19 Chest X- Ray Image Classification Using Masked Autoencoder, Xin Xing, Gongbo Liang, Chris Wang, Nathan Jacobs, Ai-Ling Lin
All Faculty Scholarship (Archived)
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgent need for rapid and accurate diagnosis facilitated by artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in computer-aided diagnosis using medical imaging. However, this context presents two notable challenges: high diagnostic accuracy demand and limited availability of medical data for training AI models. To address these issues, we proposed the implementation of a Masked AutoEncoder (MAE), an innovative self-supervised learning approach, for classifying 2D Chest X-ray images. Our approach involved performing imaging reconstruction using a Vision Transformer (ViT) model as the feature encoder, paired with a custom-defined decoder. Additionally, we fine-tuned the pretrained ViT encoder using a …

Primary adrenal angiosarcoma is an extremely rare malignant tumor with challenging diagnosis. A 66-year-old woman had a 4.3 cm right adrenal mass suspicious for adrenal cortical carcinoma. Pathological examination demonstrated a hemorrhagic adrenal cyst with numerous irregularly shaped anastomosing vascular channels lined by atypical endothelial cells that had frequent atypical mitotic figures (12/10 HPF, Ki67 10%). The tumor cells were positive for CD31, ERG, and FLI-1, but negative for adrenal and other tumor lineage markers by immunohistochemistry. NGS fusion gene testing ruled out epithelioid hemangioendothelioma. Accurate diagnosis and differential inclusion are important for appropriate treatment of this rare tumor.

Osteosarcoma is the most frequent primary malignant bone tumor with an annual incidence of about 400 cases in the United States. Osteosarcoma primarily metastasizes to the lungs, where FAS ligand (FASL) is constitutively expressed. The interaction of FASL and its cell surface receptor, FAS, triggers apoptosis in normal cells; however, this function is altered in cancer cells. DNA methylation has previously been explored as a mechanism for altering FAS expression, but no variability was identified in the CpG island (CGI) overlapping the promoter. Analysis of an expanded region, including CGI shores and shelves, revealed high variability in the methylation of …

Tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) are the most common and lethal childhood malignancy. Detection of residual disease and longitudinal monitoring of treatment response in patients are challenging and rely on serial imaging. This current standard of care fails to detect microscopic disease or provide molecular characteristics of residual tumors. As such, there is dire need for minimally invasive liquid biopsy techniques. We have previously shown the high specificity of using cell surface vimentin (CSV) to identify circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from patients bearing various types of cancers. Here, we describe the first report of CTCs captured from peripheral …

The Dilemma Of Socrates’ Position: Interview Methods And Feminist Empirical Bioethics, Michiel De Proost
The Qualitative Report
There is a growing body of bioethics research that addresses the importance of adapting empirical, predominantly qualitative, methods to generate debate on ethical arguments. However, there is an absence of illustrative work examining how this could be realised from a feminist perspective. This article, seeking to address the research gap, examines interview methods through a reflexive lens. Drawing on the doctoral research I conducted through interviews with women who were interested in social egg freezing (i.e., healthy women freezing their eggs in anticipation of future infertility), I describe how I encountered a dilemma because of my gendered positionality and the …
