Heavy Metals Within The Hawaiian Islands Archipelago As Evidenced In The Hawaiian Monk Seal And Their Prey, Yvanna M. Strait

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

The Hawaiian monk seal (HMS) is an endangered, endemic seal native to the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). During the 21st century, members of the HMS population have established residency within the Main Hawaiian Islands (MHI). This habitat shift may increase exposure of the animals to greater anthropogenic (urban industrialization, agricultural practices, and military activity) and natural (volcanic activity) heavy metal contaminants. Induced coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICPMS) analysis compared 16 heavy metal concentrations in HMS bone segregated by region, age, and sex. In additions, metal concentrations from potential prey items from the southern extent of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands …

The focus then shifts to how the international climate change regime could contribute to the protection of marine biodiversity as part of mitigation, adaptation and finance, taking into account human rights impacts and standards, drawing a comparison with REDD+. The article concludes with an original proposal, inspired by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, to develop urgent, synergistic …

Victim Protection And The Dynamic Situation Of Human Trafficking: Indonesia Experience, Nathalina Naibaho Aug 2023

Victim Protection And The Dynamic Situation Of Human Trafficking: Indonesia Experience, Nathalina Naibaho

Indonesian Journal of International Law

Human trafficking is a global issue. It can arise in the context of national and/or transnational acts and are regulated by national and transnational criminal law mechanisms. However, in trafficking in person cases there are links between human trafficking and other related crimes such as drugs trafficking. Meanwhile, Indonesia has enacted laws which provide mandatory protection for victims of human trafficking. It also has mandatory drug laws which, in some cases, subject to the death penalty. This legislative conflict together with investigative and prosecutorial failure risks the conviction of human trafficked victims who are used as drug dealers in organized …

Cloaked In Shadow: The Biopolitics Of Sauron’S Middle-Hell, Journee Cotton

Online Midwinter Seminar (OMS)

This paper considers hellish aspects of The Lord of the Rings through an environmental bioethical framework focusing on the intersection of biopolitics, race, and ecology. Key figures that shall be examined include Sauron, Saruman, Uruk-hai, and the body of Middle-earth. Sauron shall be read as a Hades figure; they share numerous connections, such as their domain is hell, influence over invisibility (Hades’ cloak and Sauron’s Ring), characterization of giver of gifts, possession of dead bodies, and connection to the earth’s fertility (or lack). Sauron’s possession over dead bodies arises from the necropolitical power he incites over bodies in his sphere …

Small Satellite Conference

Today's rapid progress in space exploration leads to a high impact on our society. Especially young people are highly affected by this fascination. Despite this large pool of curious pupils, it remains challenging to find entry points into space and aeronautic-related careers for them. Often, these topics seem to be out of reach for most pupils. Educational programs like AstroPi (offered by ESA) or High School Aerospace Scholars (offered by NASA) target this issue. However, those projects never get into contact with actual outer space and remain mostly theoretical. The goal of the mission "SpaceTeamSat1" and the CubeSat with the …

Gsk-J4 Inhibition Of Kdm6b Histone Demethylase Blocks Adhesion Of Mantle Cell Lymphoma Cells To Stromal Cells By Modulating Nf-Κb Signaling, Laia Sadeghi, Anthony P H Wright

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Multiple signaling pathways facilitate the survival and drug resistance of malignant B-cells by regulating their migration and adhesion to microenvironmental niches. NF-κB pathways are commonly dysregulated in mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), but the exact underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Here, using a co-culture model system, we show that the adhesion of MCL cells to stromal cells is associated with elevated levels of KDM6B histone demethylase mRNA in adherent cells. The inhibition of KDM6B activity, using either a selective inhibitor (GSK-J4) or siRNA-mediated knockdown, reduces MCL adhesion to stromal cells. We showed that KDM6B is required both for the removal …

The Good, The Bad, And The Mind-Body Problem: Dualistic Punishment And Torture In The Good Place, Katelynn Baerg

Online Midwinter Seminar (OMS)

Theories about the afterlife have been a constant fixation of humanity throughout history, illustrated through diverse mediums and genres. Literary and philosophical movements reflect and influence the shifts between the worldviews of traditional and modern writers. In comparing Michael Schur’s sitcom The Good Place with Dante Alighieri’s Inferno, this paper demonstrates how the writer’s depictions of torture and punishment reflect their respective positions on philosophical concepts of the human self. Through the lens of the mind-body problem proposed by Rene Descartes, I analyze how the relationship between the mind and body in the afterlife is explored in each depiction. …

Today, China is one of the largest markets for wild animal trading. Yet, wild animals are in a regulatory grey area. There is an increasing need to revisit how wild animals are simultaneously but differently regulated in the food and wildlife protection regimes. Rarely do attempts to understand these two regimes occur, making this article's analysis of miscoordination in these bodies of law crucial in addressing the hindrance of nationwide food safety improvement efforts.

From Hell (Or Not): Representations Of Merlin And His Origins In The Comics, Michael A. Torregrossa Aug 2023

From Hell (Or Not): Representations Of Merlin And His Origins In The Comics, Michael A. Torregrossa

Online Midwinter Seminar (OMS)

The Arthurian figure of Merlin has a long literary history, but he never seems able to shake off the effects of his parentage. In medieval tradition, Merlin is sired by inhuman powers: first a seemingly benign dæmon and then a decidedly wicked demon. This preternatural aspect to his conception grants Merlin the skills and powers he uses to support the realm, yet it also taints him as someone potentially dangerous. Although Merlin’s background cannot be changed, creative artists often choose to ignore or alter his origins, especially when retelling his story for mass audiences. In contrast, other creators, usually those …

Small Satellite Conference

The growing number of noncooperative flying objects has prompted interest in sample-return and space debris removal missions. Current solutions are both costly and largely dependent on specific object identification and capture methods. In this paper, a low-cost modular approach for control of a swarm flight of small satellites in rendezvous and capture missions is proposed by solving the optimal output regulation problem. By integrating the theories of tracking control, adaptive optimal control, and output regulation, the optimal control policy is designed as a feedback-feedforward controller to guarantee the asymptotic tracking of a class of reference input generated by the leader. …

Multi-view stereo photogrammetric techniques are conventionally utilized to generate Global Digital Elevation Models (GDEM) of planetary and lunar surfaces. However, these methods, relying on conventional feature detectors, are often subject to inaccuracies caused by changes in lighting conditions, including diffuse reflection and harsh shading. This has limited the ability of these methods to accurately reconstruct shadowed regions in orbital imagery, such as highly shaded urban areas and the permanently shadowed regions (PSRs) located on the lunar surface, which are critical targets for NASA’s Artemis program. Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) offer a novel solution to these limitations by breaking away from …

Proposing A Measure Of Ethicality For Humans And Ai, Alejandro Jorge Napolitano Jawerbaum

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Smarter people or intelligent machines are able to make more accurate inferences about their environment and other agents more efficiently than less intelligent agents. Formally: ‘Intelligence measures an agent’s ability to achieve goals in a wide range of environments.’ (Legg, 2008)

In this dissertation we extend this definition to include ethical behaviour and we will offer a mathematical formalism and a way to estimate how ethical an action is or will be, both for a human and for a computer, by calculating the expected values of random variables. Formally, we propose the following measure of ethicality, which is computable, or …

Analyzing Pseudomonas Aeruginosa With Bacteriophage Tags Using Photoacoustic Flow Cytometry, Jennifer C. Schinke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The number of daily bacterial infections is climbing and the CDC explains that this is due to the antibiotic-resistant threat in the United States. Finding a faster way of bacterial identification is necessary as it currently takes 1-4 days for a medical lab to culture and identify bacteria. Photoacoustic flow cytometry (PAFC) can be used as an alternative method resulting in swift identification within an hour (Edgar, 2019). Pseudomonas aeruginosa, cell line PA01, will be coated in up to a few hundred red dyed phages making it detectible by the photoacoustic flow cytometry system. Bacteriophages (phages) are viruses that …
