Background: Low back pain (LBP) has been shown to have various biological, psychological, and social factors that affect prognosis. However, it is unclear how personality may influence self-reported outcome measures and therapeutic alliance (TA). Methods: Eysenck’s personality inventory was used to assess personality, while the numeric pain rating scale (NPRS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), Global Rating of Change (GROC), and the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) measured patient progress and relationship strength. All outcome measures were formulated in a single survey that both the therapist and patient completed electronically. Results: Sixty-seven patients with LBP and twenty-two …

Quantitative Benefits Of Reducing The Inferior Border Of Right-Sided Free Breathing Intact Breast Treatment Plans Regarding Liver Dose, Shelby Handshue
Masters Projects
Introduction
Breast cancer is a prevalent disease in the United States, affecting approximately one in eight women during their lifetime (Leaver & Washington, 2010). Advancements in medical treatments have evolved from mastectomy to a multidisciplinary approach. Radiation therapy plays a crucial role in preventing local recurrence after breast conserving surgery. Traditionally, whole breast irradiation has been administered over 25-28 fractions to a total dose of 45-50 Gray (Gy), followed by a boost of 5-8 fractions to the tumor bed. In recent times, hypofractionation, which involves a shorter treatment schedule of 15-16 fractions to a total dose of 42.5 Gy, followed …

Shift Change: Minimizing The Covid-19 Nursing Shortage And Decreasing Nursing Burnout, Suzanne R. Baker
Shift Change: Minimizing The Covid-19 Nursing Shortage And Decreasing Nursing Burnout, Suzanne R. Baker
MSN Capstone Projects
Burnout and the nursing shortage of the healthcare system is not a new issue for nurses, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused this problem to only get worse (Young, 2021). Most healthcare facilities are severely understaffed. The nursing shortage and symptoms of burnout among nurses working in the Intensive Care Units (ICU) and other high-demand COVID-19 nursing units have been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic. Inferior working conditions such as increased work times, increased workload, and decreased training in the care of COVID-19 patients magnified nursing burnout and the ongoing nursing shortage (Galanis et al., 2021). Discovering ways to reduce the …

More Is Better Than One: The Effect Of Ensembling On Deep Learning Performance In Biochemical Prediction Problems, Jacob A. Stern
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents two papers addressing important biochemical prediction challenges. The first paper focuses on accurate protein distance predictions and introduces updates to the ProSPr network. We evaluate its performance in the Critical Assessment of techniques for Protein Structure Prediction (CASP14) competition, investigating its accuracy dependence on sequence length and multiple sequence alignment depth. The ProSPr network, an ensemble of three convolutional neural networks (CNNs), demonstrates superior performance compared to individual networks. The second paper addresses the issue of accurate ligand ranking in virtual screening for drug discovery. We propose MILCDock, a machine learning consensus docking tool that leverages predictions …
Analyzing The Impact Of Process-Oriented Technology In Programming Education, Kate Arendes
Analyzing The Impact Of Process-Oriented Technology In Programming Education, Kate Arendes
Theses
Currently, there exist several factors in programming education that deter novice programmers. Computer science students are often significantly penalized for programs that do not compile, reflecting how current teaching standards are focused on the product of the student’s efforts, rather than the independent pieces of code that would otherwise execute properly. Novice programmers struggle with interpreting error messages that identify where and why a program failed, but are written with the assumption that the author already has mastered the fundamental concepts that they are trying to implement. In the classroom, educators may show presentations with pre-written code or perform live …

Human genome-wide association studies have identified FAN1 and several DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes as modifiers of Huntington’s disease age of onset. In animal models, FAN1 prevents somatic expansion of CAG triplet repeats, whereas MMR proteins promote this process. To understand the molecular basis of these opposing effects, we evaluated FAN1 nuclease function on DNA extrahelical extrusions that represent key intermediates in triplet repeat expansion. Here, we describe a strand-directed, extrusion-provoked nuclease function of FAN1 that is activated by RFC, PCNA, and ATP at physiological ionic strength. Activation of FAN1 in this manner results in DNA cleavage in the vicinity …

The Relationships Between Parenting Stress, Growth, And Development In Infants With Congenital Heart Defects During The First Six Months Of Life, Danica F. Sumpter
Dissertations
The stress experienced by parents at the time of diagnosis and hospitalization for their infant's congenital heart defect (CHD) is well recognized by healthcare professionals. Increased parenting stress has been negatively correlated with development in low birthweight infants. The primary purpose of this study was to explore the parenting stress as experienced by parents of infants with CHD during their first six months of life. In addition, the relationship between parenting stress and the growth and development of infants with CHD was explored. Due to the transactional nature of mother-infant interaction, both directions of this relationship were examined, the factors …

The formation of germinal centers (GCs) is crucial for humoral immunity and vaccine efficacy. Constant stimulation through microbiota drives the formation of constitutive GCs in Peyer's patches (PPs), which generate B cells that produce antibodies against gut antigens derived from commensal bacteria and infectious pathogens. However, the molecular mechanism that regulates this persistent process is poorly understood. We report that Ewing Sarcoma Breakpoint Region 1 (EWSR1) is a brake to constitutive GC generation and immunoglobulin G (IgG) production in PPs, vaccination-induced GC formation, and IgG responses. Mechanistically, EWSR1 suppresses Bcl6 upregulation after antigen encounter, thereby negatively regulating induced GC B …

Evaluating The Osteogenic Potential Of Raspberry Ketone And Simvastatin Dual-Loaded Electrospun Chitosan Membranes On Preosteoblasts, Matthew T. Atwill
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study evaluated the osteogenic potential of dual-loading raspberry ketone (RK) and simvastatin (SMV) onto electrospun chitosan membranes (ESCMs) to impart bioactivity onto guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes and give them a more active role in osteodifferentiation. In this study, W-20-17 cells in media exposed to 12-100µg/ml RK in combination with 75-150ng/ml SMV resulted in increased basal alkaline phosphatase (ALP) expression, whereas RK groups alone had no effect on ALP expression. Additionally, there was a dose-dependent combinatory cytotoxic effect in which SMV in combination with increasing concentrations of RK resulted in decreased viability and vice versa. RK+SMV combinations were loaded …

Reaching marginal and other migrant communities to elicit their political views and opinions is a well-known challenge. Social media has enabled a certain amount of online activism and participation, especially in societies with abundant multicultural identities. However, it can be quite challenging to isolate the voice of the migrant in English-speaking countries, especially with an abundance of content in English on social media. In this paper, we pursue a case study of Ireland’s Twitter landscape, specifically migrant and native activists. We present a methodology that can accurately ( >80% ) isolate the Irish migrant voice with as little as 25 …

“We’Re Not A Band That Everybody Gets”: Parsing The Spectacle Of They Might Be Giants, Rachel Eliza Jones
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
After releasing twenty-three studio albums and performing together for four decades under the name They Might Be Giants—first as a duo and then, beginning in 1992, with a full backing band—John Flansburgh and John Linnell have certainly established a niche for themselves within the world of alternative rock. The band achieved a brief glimpse of mainstream commercial success in 1990 with the release of their third album, Flood, and in the years since, they’ve maintained a foothold in popular culture through their music for film and television, as well as the release of four children’s albums, one of which earned …
Roles Of Type I Interferon Signaling In Drug Resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection, Suhas Bobba
Roles Of Type I Interferon Signaling In Drug Resistant Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Infection, Suhas Bobba
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Tuberculosis (TB) is a global health threat, with 10 million people developing active TB disease and a million deaths attributed to TB annually. Emergence of drug resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), the causative agent of TB, has led to half a million cases of drug resistant (DR) TB annually. Further, clinical reports suggest dysregulation and suppression of immune responses in DR TB patients as compared with DS TB patients. However, we do not understand how acquisition of drug resistance-conferring mutations can drive broad and systemic differences in immune responses of DR TB patients. We found that rpoB-H445Y a specific DR …
Drivers And Dynamics Of Phytoplankton Communities And Harmful Algal Blooms In Mountain Lakes, Lara Stephanie Jansen
Drivers And Dynamics Of Phytoplankton Communities And Harmful Algal Blooms In Mountain Lakes, Lara Stephanie Jansen
Dissertations and Theses
Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (cyanoHABs) are a complex and widespread disturbance in freshwater water bodies, impacting water quality for wildlife and human populations. While cyanobacteria often bloom in warm lakes impacted by human development like agriculture, blooms are increasingly reported in cooler waters with limited development in the surrounding watershed. As much of cyanoHAB research has focused on lakes in highly developed watersheds, the understanding of factors leading to cyanobacteria dominance and blooms in the absence of major development remains limited. Mountain lakes can serve as ideal systems to study bloom-forming cyanobacteria in watersheds with minimal development. In addition, mountain lakes …
