Algorithmic Literacy As Inclusive Pedagogy, Melanie Sellar Jan 2023

Algorithmic Literacy As Inclusive Pedagogy, Melanie Sellar

Staff publications, research, and presentations

The call for inclusive pedagogies has captured the wide interest of information literacy practitioners, who are now exploring what it means to teach inclusively and equitably within our discipline. This chapter argues that incorporating algorithmic literacy into our teaching praxis is an inclusive pedagogy, one which not only builds upon much of our professional priorities of the last ten years but also addresses an emerging need. By facilitating student awareness of algorithmic biases, for example, we can help to create a classroom environment that values the experiences and voices of all communities and that equips students with the willingness and …

Making The Lover’S Leap: Wenonah, Rhetorical Colonialism, And Dissociative Memory(-)Work, Adam J. Gaffey Jan 2023

Making The Lover’S Leap: Wenonah, Rhetorical Colonialism, And Dissociative Memory(-)Work, Adam J. Gaffey

Communication Studies Faculty Works

This essay analyzes a display of Wenonah and the “Lover’s Leap” in Winona, Minnesota, as an example of dissociative memory(-)work. Applying dissociation to the organization of commemorative space, I attend to how the display uses markers of commemorative labor as modifying terms that invite audiences to dissociate investiture from the figure represented in order to privilege the people, actions, and temporal frameworks of those who made and maintained the memorial. This analysis proposes different dissociative units relevant to memory(-)work, including persona memorialized/persona memorializing, act memorialized/act of memorializing, and time memorialized/time of memorializing. Attention to this example of memory(-)work helps critics …

The Impact Thinking Framework: A Process For Adbancing Research-To-Ractice Initiatives In Neuroaesthetics, Susan Magsamen, Tasha L. Golden, Catriona A. Towriss, Joy Allen Jan 2023

The Impact Thinking Framework: A Process For Adbancing Research-To-Ractice Initiatives In Neuroaesthetics, Susan Magsamen, Tasha L. Golden, Catriona A. Towriss, Joy Allen

Faculty Works

Neuroaesthetics research explores brain, body and behavioral responses to engagement with the arts and other aesthetic sensory experiences. Evidence indicates that such experiences can help address various psychological, neurological and physiological disorders, and that they can support mental and physical well-being and learning in the general population. The interdisciplinary nature of this work contributes to its impact and promise; however, it also creates challenges as various disciplines approach and define research and practice in varied ways. Recent field-wide reports have noted that a consensus translational framework is needed to support further neuroaesthetics research that can deliver meaningful knowledge and interventions. …

Necessary For Some, And Helpful For All: Preparing Music Educators To Reach Every Student, Rhoda Bernard Jan 2023

Necessary For Some, And Helpful For All: Preparing Music Educators To Reach Every Student, Rhoda Bernard

Faculty Works

The percentage of students in U.S. public schools who are classified as stu- dents with disabilities under the Individ- uals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has been steadily increasing in recent years, and continues to grow. Unfortu- nately, music educators are not adequate- ly prepared to teach disabled students. Pre-service music teacher education pro- grams do not provide course content in the pedagogy of accessible music educa- tion. Any coursework related to students with disabilities that is provided by these programs is limited to general studies of the historical and legal aspects of special education. As a result, music teachers …

Profiles Of Well-Being Among Early Childhood Educators, Amy M. Roberts, Alexandra Daro, Kathleen C. Gallagher Jan 2023

Profiles Of Well-Being Among Early Childhood Educators, Amy M. Roberts, Alexandra Daro, Kathleen C. Gallagher

Buffet Early Childhood Institute Reports and Publications

Research Findings: This study used a person-centered data analytic approach to identify distinct subgroups of early childhood educators (n= 133) based on their responses to multiple indicators of well-being (psychological, financial, and health indicators). Various fit indices established a two-class solution. Specifically, one group was characterized by more positive well-being and the other by less positive well-being. Subgroup differences were the greatest for indicators of psychological well-being, including self-care and self-compassion. In addition, educators with less than a bachelor’s degree, working as assistant teachers, receiving less pay, with more adverse childhood experiences, were overrepresented in the less positive …

Paternal Affliction: Emotions And Masculinity Among Eighteenth-Century Italian Jewish Merchants, Francesca Bregoli Jan 2023

Paternal Affliction: Emotions And Masculinity Among Eighteenth-Century Italian Jewish Merchants, Francesca Bregoli

Publications and Research

This essay focuses on the “rhetoric of paternal affliction” that late eighteenthcentury

Italian Jewish merchant patriarchs employed in letters and supplications

addressing threats to their intertwined paternal and commercial authority,

particularly when filial disobedience or apostasy was involved. I examine this

rhetoric as an emotional style that illuminates Jewish merchant masculinity.

Although the image of a suffering father seems to deviate from known early

modern models of hegemonic masculinity, within the context of the eighteenthcentury

culture of sensibility this rhetoric emphasized Jewish patriarchs’ honesty

and righteousness, beseeching male compassion and sympathy. By performing

vulnerability vis-à-vis Jewish associates, as well as …

The Male Gaze And Women’S Sports Identity: Male Authorship Of The Female Experience, Jennifer Lavoie Jan 2023

The Male Gaze And Women’S Sports Identity: Male Authorship Of The Female Experience, Jennifer Lavoie

The Graduate Review

The male gaze “construes women subjectively, according to stereotyped cognitions which harmonise with the expectations of the male reader [viewer]” (Brandt 2005, 235). This article examines how the male gaze shapes women’s participation in sport and physical activity. A brief historical retrospective provides examples of how the male voice authored ways in which women were allowed to compete and then offers contemporary examples that show how the male gaze continues to influence women’s sport clothing and behavior, rules, policies, and coaching methods. Despite the improvements in women’s sport participation, men still have the lion’s share of leadership positions with sports …

E2: Equity And Excellence Framework, Adrienne Coleman, Traci Ellis Jan 2023

E2: Equity And Excellence Framework, Adrienne Coleman, Traci Ellis

Publications & Research

Both the United States and the United Nations have identified, examined, and put out a call to action to address the educational inequities that have disproportionately and negatively affected racially minoritized students, as well as those from a lower socioeconomic background, and poorer countries. Data from the Nations Report Card and the Global Monitoring Report provide evidence of disparities in academic performance and access to equitable educational resources. The outcome of these inequities impacts countries throughout the world, as their residents will not possess the skills and knowledge to thrive in a rapidly evolving global society, nor possess the critical …

Understanding The Lamanite Mark, Clifford P. Jones Jan 2023

Understanding The Lamanite Mark, Clifford P. Jones

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon describes a dark mark on the skin that distinguished people who rebelled against God and his laws from those who obeyed God. The Old Testament refers to a mark that fits this description and has nothing to do with natural skin color. The law of Moses prohibited the Lord’s covenant people from cutting sacrilegious marks (ancient tattoos) into their skin. The Bible simply calls these prohibited tattoos “marks” (Leviticus 19:28). This biblical meaning of the word mark, together with biblical meanings of other related words, helps us understand all Book of Mormon passages associated with the …

Centered On Christ: The Book Of Enos Possibly Structured Chiastically, Stephen Kent Ehat Jan 2023

Centered On Christ: The Book Of Enos Possibly Structured Chiastically, Stephen Kent Ehat

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The book of Enos is considered to be a short, one-chapter treatise on prayer, yet it is more. Close examination of its text reveals it to be a text structurally centered on Christ and the divine covenant. Enos seeks and obtains from Him a covenant to preserve the records of the Nephites for the salvation of the Lamanites. Enos prays not only for his own remission of sins but also for the salvation both of his own people, the Nephites, and also of the Lamanites. He yearns in faith that the Lord will preserve the records of his people for …

Does Reading While Listening To Text Improve Comprehension Compared To Reading Only? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Virginia Clinton-Lisell Jan 2023

Does Reading While Listening To Text Improve Comprehension Compared To Reading Only? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Virginia Clinton-Lisell

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Due to technological advancements such as text-to-speech software, reading while listening (audio-assisted reading) is widely available. However, the findings are mixed on the effectiveness of reading while listening as a tool to improve comprehension. The purpose of this study is to synthesize existing studies on reading while listening to determine for whom and under what circumstances reading while listening is helpful. A systematic review with a meta-analysis was conducted in which 30 eligible studies (total N = 1945) with 62 effect sizes were examined. Using robust variance analysis, a trivial overall benefit of reading while listening over reading only on …

Inclusive Education And Udl Professional Development For Teachers In Sweden And India, Linda P. Ewe, Elizabeth M. Dalton, Sujata Bhan, Susie L. Gronseth, Gabriella Dahlberg

Communicative Disorders Faculty Publications

In education, the factors involved in a successful inclusive education classroom are diverse and multidimensional, with a growing research base. Universal design for learning (UDL) can help educators address the varied needs of students through diversification of the design of instructional methods, materials, and assessments. Global interest in UDL has driven the need for more teacher training opportunities. This chapter contributes to the literature base on professional development in UDL cases by presenting two examples from two national contexts, Sweden and India. The authors ground the two cases in the literature on teacher training, inclusive education, and UDL, concluding with …

Digital storytelling prioritizes real-time connections, story creation, contextual adaptability, multi-media expression, and accessibility. This article discusses the unrecognized affordances and value of digital storytelling practices for teens living in precarious (neo)colonial lifeworlds. We review the workshop methods developed as designers and leaders of “Gathering Stories: A Digital Storytelling Workshop for Young Women” in July 2021 to enliven and illuminate high school students’ voices while also addressing social, emotional, and affective experiences and needs during the pandemic. The article details how we co-realized spaces where teens’ lived experience of gathering and the draw of story were the driving forces for their …

Use Of Speech Recognition Tools To Predict Mistakes In Audio Book Recordings, Micah Tietz Jan 2023

Use Of Speech Recognition Tools To Predict Mistakes In Audio Book Recordings, Micah Tietz

All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

This thesis documents the feasibility of creating an automated system to identify mistakes and errors in audiobook performances, with the intent of helping to speed up and streamline the otherwise-lengthy process of audiobook production and editing. The primary method being explored is to compare the intended script with the audio recording of the performance, as evaluated and transcribed by an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, and to search for discrepancies between the two. Other topics examined include the background and history of audiobooks and ASR systems, the difficulties of creating a bespoke machine-learning system for a specific performer, the strengths …

Narratives Reflecting Theory Of Mind Among Bilingual Lyuli Children Of Uzbekistan, Hristo Kyuchukov, Jill De Villiers, Bahodir B. Mamurov, Gulbahor R. Akramova Jan 2023

Narratives Reflecting Theory Of Mind Among Bilingual Lyuli Children Of Uzbekistan, Hristo Kyuchukov, Jill De Villiers, Bahodir B. Mamurov, Gulbahor R. Akramova

Philosophy: Faculty Publications

This is the first known study of the socio-cognitive development of Lyuli children, a Roma-type group living in Bukhara in Uzbekistan. The research was conducted in schools in Bukhara serving both Lyuli children and Uzbek children, both of whom are multi-lingual but whose sociolinguistic circumstances are somewhat different. There has been less cross-cultural work on later stages of Theory of Mind development, in which children have to make inferences about the mental states of characters in a complex narrative. The research here shows that the children from both groups do remarkably well on these tasks, and their multilingualism is hypothesized …

The Teachings Of Silvanus: A Little- Known Gem From Nag Hammadi, Dennis Newton Jan 2023

The Teachings Of Silvanus: A Little- Known Gem From Nag Hammadi, Dennis Newton

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Scholars have recently suggested that The Teachings of Silvanus, a text from Nag Hammadi Codex VII, is the product of several authors with the earliest portion dating to the late first or early second century and the latest portion to the third or early fourth century. Silvanus’ provenance, therefore, allows this single document to serve as a potential microcosm evidencing the change and alteration of early Christian thought and doctrine. Latter-day Saints have long contended that the Restored Gospel is more closely aligned with the earliest strains of Christianity vis-à-vis the creedal form. Through the lens of Silvanus, Latter-day Saint …

A Restoration Of Paul’S Understanding Of Faith As A Relationship Of Action, Godfrey J. Ellis Jan 2023

A Restoration Of Paul’S Understanding Of Faith As A Relationship Of Action, Godfrey J. Ellis

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Brent Schmidt builds on his earlier book on relational grace by tackling the topic of relational faith. For those interested in historical trends in religious thought, this book provides intimate details of Greek and Latin terms and the gradual corruption of the original Pauline concept of faith by Augustine and other early and influential thinkers and theologians. Leading the reader through the conceptual reworking of the idea of faith by examining both well-known and lesser-known reformers, but somewhat skirting the faith-works debate, Schmidt ends up nevertheless convincingly demonstrating two facts. First, that faith as concrete action, not just as abstract …

Unavailable Genetic Evidence, Multiple Simultaneous Promised Lands, And Lamanites By Location? Possible Ramifications Of The Book Of Mormon Limited Geography Theory, Brian C. Hales Jan 2023

Unavailable Genetic Evidence, Multiple Simultaneous Promised Lands, And Lamanites By Location? Possible Ramifications Of The Book Of Mormon Limited Geography Theory, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This paper is composed of three parts connected consecutively because their conclusions build upon each other. The first part investigates the transportation methods used in the Book of Mormon, concluding that horse and river travel contributed little and that foot travel dominated all journeying. The second part uses that conclusion to estimate the overall dimensions of the Promised Land by examining Alma the Elder’s journey from Nephi to Zarahemla. This exercise reaffirms the 200-by-500-mile size promoted by John L. Sorenson decades ago. The third part looks at four ramifications of this 100,000 square-mile Promised Land footprint when stamped upon a …
