Neurodiversity: How One Word Can Hold So Much Meaning, Rocco M. Olivieri Ii
Neurodiversity: How One Word Can Hold So Much Meaning, Rocco M. Olivieri Ii
Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research
The term “neurodivergent” should be used over the phrase “mental disability” because it is a more accurate, much safer, and easily accessible term to use. There are many reasons why the language surrounding mental disabilities should be changed. The stigma of the word “disability” alone can be damaging enough to a disabled person. Furthermore, the phrase “mental disability” doesn’t accurately describe what they are and instead implies an inability to mentally function. Both of these factors combined has led to openly mentally disabled people fear for their safety as their diagnosis can be used against them once it’s public knowledge. …
Gender Bias In Story Recounting, Cecilia Garcia, Zali White, Keeley Trainer, Madison Oliver
Gender Bias In Story Recounting, Cecilia Garcia, Zali White, Keeley Trainer, Madison Oliver
[Archive] Belmont University Research Symposium (BURS)
Gendered language permeates sections of our lives in ways that we may not realize. Previous research indicates a relationship between biases and gendered language; however, it has primarily been conducted with children as the participants rather than adults (Seitz, et al., 2020). This study aimed to investigate this and identify the relationship between gendered language and implicit bias. Passages using gendered language can alter the listener's perspective in terms of the gender identification of an otherwise unlabeled protagonist. Therefore, to explore this phenomenon, participants of this study were given an androgynous story with masculine and feminine phrases. Then, a multiplication …

An Exploratory Study Of Bilingual Teacher Residencies In California., Magaly Lavadenz, Ph.D., Elvira G. Armas, Ed.D
Practitioner Journal Articles
This research brief presents a study that explores the underexamined area of bilingual teacher residencies (BTRs) in California. The authors build upon research on teacher residencies to better understand the perspectives of program leaders- those who implement BTRs in Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs). The study describes the program leaders’ insights into the implementation of BTRs at various stages of development and implementation based on the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing’s (CTC) funding phases from 2018 to 2023. Four findings are highlighted: 1) Forging New Relationships to Build on Community Cultural and Linguistic Wealth, 2) …
The Not-So-Silent Period: Testimonios Of Recently Arrived Latinx Students, Teri M. Hutchinson
The Not-So-Silent Period: Testimonios Of Recently Arrived Latinx Students, Teri M. Hutchinson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore and amplify the experiences of recently arrived Latinx1 students as interpreted through their testimonios in educational borderlands. Through increasingly xenophobic discourses around immigrants and their children (Pérez Huber, 2015), U.S. public schools have become entrenched borderland spaces wherein the humanity of recently arrived students is voided through silencing them with labels of linguistic deficiency and cramming them into one-size-fits-all educational programming (Fine et al., 2007; Flores & Rosa, 2015). There is demand for research that explores the experiences of these children, especially in light of their continued marginalization through neoliberal programming …

Blank Space: The Legal Gray Area Created By Police Abuse Of Copyright Law, Connor Druhan
Loyola University Chicago Law Journal
Music, a universal language sung and heard around the world, is a powerful force for bringing people together. It is also afforded a great deal of protection under United States copyright law. As the way we listen to music has evolved throughout history, so too have the ways that laws protect the rights of musicians and entertainers. However, due to the changing technological landscape and our methods for protecting music, law enforcement officials have found a loophole at the intersection of copyright law, free speech, and the tools we use to enforce the rights of copyright holders. The Digital Millennium …

The Crisis Of Artificial Intelligence: A New Digital Humanities Curriculum For Human-Centred Ai, Jon Chun, Katherine Elkins
DH Research
This article outlines what a successful artificial intelligence digital humanities (AI DH) curriculum entails and why it is so critical now. Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping our world and is poised to exacerbate longstanding crises including (1) the crisis of higher education and the humanities, (2) the lack of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in computer science and technology fields and (3) the wider social and economic crises facilitated by new technologies. We outline a number of ways in which an AI DH curriculum offers concrete and impactful responses to these many crises. AI DH yields meaningful new avenues of …

Pass For Some, Fail For Others: An Empirical Analysis Of Law School Grading Changes In The Early Covid-19 Pandemic, David Sandomierski, John Bliss, Tayzia Collesso
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Legal education has a long and shameful history of excluding women, people of colour, and people from working-class backgrounds.1 Quantitative diversity measures have shown gradual improvement, recently reaching parity on gender, while racial diversity continues to lag behind. Beneath the surface of this numerical story, a large body of literature has illuminated systemic inequalities in students’ lived experiences of law school.2 This article asks how historically under-represented groups experience one of the key features of legal education: grading. We examine this issue by exploring the singular moment in the history of the modern JD program when law schools across North …

Rural Education In Peru: A Study Of Its Performance, Physical And Digital Infrastructure, Gender, Linguistic, And Social And Cultural Development, Mohammed Forero Bucheli
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
Rural and indigenous education in Peru significantly differs from its urban counterparts. The physical and digital infrastructure, gender-based education, linguistic neglect, and sociocultural discrimination that rural and indigenous communities’ education receive profoundly affect performance. This thesis aims to showcase these characteristics through case studies, comparing different government and community projects to understand their development in these areas. These cases explore different aspects of the educational situation of the Huallatiri, San Antonio de Cusicancha, and Quispicanchi communities in the Southern Peruvian Andes. Through these analyses, this study portrays the intersectional characteristics of educational development in rural and indigenous communities and how …

Identifying Barriers To Dental Care Among Hispanics In Southwest Minnesota, Lissette Garza
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study was to assess the different barriers for dental health care among the Hispanic population in a rural, southwestern community in Minnesota. To collect data, an adaptation of the survey written by Vazquez and Swan (2003) was distributed to Hispanic individuals at an agricultural facility, religious organization, and an early childhood organization. The findings for the research question are presented in the cross-sectional study utilizing descriptive statistics in the form of frequencies and percentages. The results of this study indicate that not having a dental provider of the same cultural background, having a language barrier, and …

Early Intervention Speech-Language Pathologists’ Knowledge, Beliefs, And Practices Surrounding Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Assessment Practices For Dual Language Learners, Rebecca Lynne Jarzynski
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Early intervention (EI) speech-language pathologists (SLPs) are required to provide culturally and linguistically responsive assessments for dual language learners (DLLs) within an increasingly diverse population. Previous research has documented gaps between SLPs’ beliefs related to assessments for DLLs and their implementation of best practices within school-based and pediatric outpatient settings. The purpose of this present research study was to better understand the current knowledge, beliefs, and practices of EI SLPs in relation to the use of culturally and linguistically responsive assessment practices within the context of EI programs. A total of 134 EI SLPs completed a nationwide survey in which …
Using Game-Based Learning Activities To Promote Foundational Literacy Skills, Inclusion, And Equity, Shu Chen-Worley
Using Game-Based Learning Activities To Promote Foundational Literacy Skills, Inclusion, And Equity, Shu Chen-Worley
NERA Conference Proceedings 2023
Learning-by-doing is one of the influential concepts that the prominent American philosopher and education reformer, John Dewey (1859-1952) emphasized. The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how foundational literacy skills, inclusion, and equity can be achieved through game-based learning activities. Foundational literacy skills include phonological awareness, phonics, and word knowledge which are the essential skills to master vocabulary skills – reading, spelling, and semantics. Three activities will be introduced in this paper and the audience will be invited as immediate participants if possible.
Does Genre Matter When Reading To Your Child?, Charles Baldwin
Does Genre Matter When Reading To Your Child?, Charles Baldwin
NERA Conference Proceedings 2023
This review asks if research from 2014 and afterwards indicates that narratives dominate early childhood libraries and shared book reading. It further asks if varied genres positively impact children's (1) content area knowledge and vocabulary, (2) language skills, (3) knowledge about informational text structures and text features, and (4) reading interest and engagement. The review used ERIC and APA PsycINFO in a combined search. The search terms were “Informational Text*” or “Text Structure*” or “Literary Genre*” or “Disciplinary Literac*” or “Genre”. The author identified 135 peer-reviewed studies from 2014 and later which were reduced after the author read titles, abstracts …
An Exploratory Constructivist Grounded Theory Study: How Secondary School Science Teachers Interpret Students’ Scientific Models That Are Comprised Of Drawing Activities, Alecia M. Redway
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Extant literature lacks an explanation of the thought processes used by secondary school science teachers to interpret students’ scientific models that are comprised of drawing activities. In this exploratory study, a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) was developed to generate an interpretive understanding. The CGT was generated from observations, interviews, and document analyses of five research participants consisting of secondary school science teachers from lower New York State. To generate a CGT, concepts, terms, assumptions, and definitions from selected theories—decolonizing methodologies theory (DMT), visual semiotic theory (VST), and cultural studies theory (CST)—collectively provided a fresh onto-epistemological lens for initially examining and …

Publications and Research
Background The Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI) was recently devised to assess depressive symptoms that individuals specifically attribute to their work. One purpose of the ODI is to overcome limitations in current assessments of job-related distress. This study aimed to validate the Swedish version of the ODI.
Methods The study involved 365 individuals employed in Sweden. In addition to the ODI, the study included the Satisfaction with Life Scale, the Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire, the Demand-Control-Support Questionnaire, the GAD-2, and the PHQ-9. We inquired into the factorial validity, dimensionality, scalability, test-score reliability, criterion validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and measurement invariance of …

Multilingual Students’ Language Learning In U.S. Classrooms, Monique Santos
Undergraduate Review
Over time, the United States education system has shown inequality within its teaching methods, particularly in English classrooms in grades K-12. Despite the increase in diversity and English language learners in public schools, multicultural students have personally endured various forms of oppression in classrooms. This research examined classroom settings from the perspectives of people who experienced K-12 education in both their birth country of Brazil and the United States. This study also included research from library databases, online sources, and writings by scholars who have argued for critical pedagogy. The aim was to provide an enhanced understanding of the characteristics …
