The Use Of The Second Person Feminine Singular Suffix In Qasimi Dialect, Amal Abdullah Alharbi, Munira Ali Al-Azraqi Jan 2023

The Use Of The Second Person Feminine Singular Suffix In Qasimi Dialect, Amal Abdullah Alharbi, Munira Ali Al-Azraqi

Journal of Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal for Humanities and Educational Sciences

Affrication is a phonological process that is commonly found in many Arabic dialects, especially in Gulf dialects, including most Saudi dialects. This study investigated how female Qasimi speakers vary in using the affricate [ts] as a realization of /k/, the second-person singular feminine suffix, in their formal and informal styles. There are two different assumptions mentioned in previous studies about the use of this suffix in this dialect, but separately in different styles of speech. Thus, this study collected data in both formal and informal styles by the same speakers. The participants in the current study were 20 women from …

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a training program designed to increase teachers› knowledge and skills about the IoT and its applications in educational settings. The training program …

Al-Sulami’S Kitab Al-Jihad: Spiritualizing Al-Jihad Al-Asghar To Motivate The Muslim Ummah To Jihad, Mosammat Zakia Sultana Jan 2023

Al-Sulami’S Kitab Al-Jihad: Spiritualizing Al-Jihad Al-Asghar To Motivate The Muslim Ummah To Jihad, Mosammat Zakia Sultana

Theses and Dissertations

‘Ali ibn Tahir al-Sulami’s Kitab al-Jihad, The Book of the Jihad (1105), translated by Niall Christie, is a publicly dictated call to jihad in which al-Sulami attempts to motivate his listeners to go and fight against the Franj who have invaded Muslim lands and captured Jerusalem during the First Crusade. This paper examines how al-Sulami emphasizes the importance of al-jihad al-asghar through the merging of the ‘lesser’ and ‘greater’ jihads, which ultimately leads to him theorizing a reconfigured idea of jihad where he spiritualizes military jihad. Furthermore, this paper focuses on the literary choices al-Sulami makes while using Qur’anic verses …

The Idea Of Unconscionability In Equitable Adjudication And Its Variegated Manifestations In The Louisiana Territory, Pre-1900, Edad Mercier Jan 2023

The Idea Of Unconscionability In Equitable Adjudication And Its Variegated Manifestations In The Louisiana Territory, Pre-1900, Edad Mercier

Theses and Dissertations

The history of American law in the nineteenth century reveals how antislavery activism, Westward expansionism, labor, and women’s rights activism tested the boundaries, strength, and authority of the federal government over states and individuals. At the turn of the nineteenth century, as people resisted against their social position during one of the most turbulent periods in American history prior to the Civil War, American law simultaneously evolved to recognize and delineate the private and public rights of individuals and communities. My dissertation explains how informal and formal socio-legal customs were used to resolve major ethical, social, and contractual disputes arising …

The activities showcase effective, research-based second language acquisition (SLA) strategies, including providing comprehensible input via paraphrasing, using visual and media resources, gestures, and the student’s native language, and modeling tasks. Additionally, scaffolding academic language through …

Beyond The Label: Multimodal Strategies For Working With Multilingual Learners, Reka C. Barton Jan 2023

Beyond The Label: Multimodal Strategies For Working With Multilingual Learners, Reka C. Barton

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

This paper encourages teachers to move beyond the label of English language learner, and the possible connotations and limitations that may be associated with the designation, and instead expand their notions of the possibilities of working with linguistically diverse students. In this expansion, multimodality can serve as a basis for instructional strategies that would benefit multilingual learners and their classmates. Two strategies are offered, Visual Thinking Strategies and Talking Drawings. Both strategies move past the modes of reading and writing, and allow entry points via visual modalities which offers more opportunities for multilingual learners to access content and express themselves.

Los Babies Are Bilingüe: Intersections Of Race, Ethnicity, Language, And Age In Baby Books, Reka C. Barton, Verónica González Jan 2023

Los Babies Are Bilingüe: Intersections Of Race, Ethnicity, Language, And Age In Baby Books, Reka C. Barton, Verónica González

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

A growing number of babies in the United States are being raised in bilingual homes, without an easily identifiable first or native language, but rather two or more languages being acquired and spoken simultaneously. It is imperative that the richness and diversity of race and language be centered and valued at the onset of the nation’s youngest population. Additionally, research demonstrates that the early years are critical to the maintenance of home language(s) as well as to the development of a racial consciousness that foregrounds the socialization of race and language that will continue to develop throughout childhood. With this …

Taking Ousmane Sembène’s internship with the Soviet filmmaker Mark Donskoy as its point of departure, this article traces the entanglement of Sembène’s early films with Soviet cinema. To this end, I will be focusing on the general context of montage and cinema of the Thaw, while giving special consideration to a short Soviet documentary film celebrating Senegalese independence. In particular, paradigms of Thaw cinema can be discerned in Sembène’s Borom Sarret, where they are coupled with the claim to cinematic dialectic, resulting in an active translation into African contexts. In conclusion I would like to offer an intertextual reading …

In fact, the book chosen for this study covers the question of the political aspects of the societies, the dictatorship under the name of democracy, corruption as a norm, and many other points. This study examines Sembène’s novel from the point of view of his interpretation of social and political realities. It depicts the post-independence disillusionment of Senegal.

The role of sound is analyzed in five films by Ousmane Sembène, including his first films Borom Sarret (1963), Niaye (1964) and La Noire de... [Black Girl] (1966). The sounds weave an ensemble or “braid” themselves into the fabric of the film in accordance with a concept theorized by critic Trish FitzSimons. This specific nature of braided sounds reveals narrative elements by way of Sembène’s sound technologies and choices and thus invites spectators to enter into a dialogic community, or even a discursive community, with the filmmaker, his films, and other spectators world-wide.

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

In Ukraine, the challenges and threats to the efficient functioning of the transportation industry are intensifying during the war and infrastructure destruction. The need for emergency repairs of the ruined infrastructure hinders the reform of the Ukrainian transportation industry. Furthermore, developing an integrated EU-oriented multimodal transportation system within the "Eastern Partnership" regional network becomes more complicated. This article aims to identify the problems of efficiency and competitiveness of the Ukrainian transportation industry in the context of integration into the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and the construction of a multimodal transportation system. The research employs a systemic analysis methodology to assess …

Cultural Practices Of Managing Social-Cultural Activity: Foreign Experience And Domestic Realities, Stepan Dychkovskyy, Maksym Maksymchuk, Anton Poslavskyi, Nataliia Stoliarchuk, Olena Zarutska

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The issue of cultural development in general, as well as the features of management in the social-cultural sphere, have become especially relevant in recent years in connection with introducing quarantine measures related to spreading COVID-19 in the world, Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and economic and political changes in the world. State authorities in many countries attach particular importance to the issue of forming an effective management environment for social-cultural activities. They put forward new high requirements for training specialists in this field, which would meet the challenges of time and the development trends of the world community. In particular, …

Did Jewish Women Circumcise Male Infants In Antiquity? A Reassessment Of The Evidence, Thomas R. Blanton Iv Jan 2023

Did Jewish Women Circumcise Male Infants In Antiquity? A Reassessment Of The Evidence, Thomas R. Blanton Iv

2023 Faculty Bibliography

Two diametrically opposed assumptions have influenced interpretations of circumcision rituals in ancient Judaism: either women performed the operation on their infant sons because children at birth and during infancy remained under the purview of the mother; or, conversely, men—specifically a ritual agent known as the mohel—performed circumcisions, because only they were typically granted authority to carry out the ritual. This study reassesses the pertinent texts, including Exodus 4 and passages from the books of Maccabees and the Babylonian Talmud (b. Šabb. 134a; b. Yebam. 64b; b. ʿAbod. Zar. 27a), to determine whether women in ancient Judaism may have circumcised their …

Continuities Of Consciousness, Life-Worlds, And Numinous Experience: Cognitive-Phenomenological Foundations For An Empirical Neo-Shamanism, Harry T. Hunt Jan 2023

Continuities Of Consciousness, Life-Worlds, And Numinous Experience: Cognitive-Phenomenological Foundations For An Empirical Neo-Shamanism, Harry T. Hunt

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Numinous experience—as the felt sense of the sacred—evokes feelings of allone unity, communality, humility, and healing. Its schematization in the absolutes of traditional religion can also be seen as all-encompassing symbolic unifications of an otherwise fragmented human life-world—as more analytically depicted in the life-world phenomenologies of Husserl and Heidegger. In both feeling and concept the numinous would be the semantic amplification of the more concrete organism-surround nonduality of non symbolic organisms—as reflected in a primary consciousness shared across Uexkuell’s sentient animal umwelten and Gibson’s “envelopes of flow.” H usserl’s phenomenology of passive synthesis and James on pure experience can be …

Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases And Deworming Response In School-Aged Children In Retalhuleu, Guatemala, Rebeca Esther Vergara Greeno Jan 2023

Soil-Transmitted Helminthiases And Deworming Response In School-Aged Children In Retalhuleu, Guatemala, Rebeca Esther Vergara Greeno

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Background: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STH) are amongst the most common diseases of poverty worldwide despite mass deworming campaigns. However, widespread use of benzimidazole anthelminthics in these campaigns has been associated with variable efficacy against three of the most common STHs, thus raising concerns regarding emerging resistance. Albendazole, in particular, has been shown to be least effective against Trichuris trichiura.

Methods: Our aim was to determine baseline prevalence and intensity of STH infections in rural school children living in Retalhuleu, Guatemala, and to evaluate the efficacy of single dose albendazole in infected children. We conducted a cross-sectional study with 557 children ages …

A Consistent Ethic Of Life For Philippine Church Leadership, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta Jan 2023

A Consistent Ethic Of Life For Philippine Church Leadership, Anatoly Angelo R. Aseneta

Theology Department Faculty Publications

This essay proposes Joseph Cardinal Bernardin''s consistent ethic of life (CEL) as a moral framework for Philippine Church leadership to consider and adapt as it engages with social issues. The paper begins by presenting the dual and inconsistent approaches of Philippine Church leadership to political engagement. This would be followed by a presentation of the key ideas of the CEL from which leaders of the Philippine Church can learn as well as how these can help renew the Philippine Church's vision of responding to the signs of the times; especially in terms of consistency. The paper concludes by proposing some …

Reshaping Incentivization: An Examination Of California’S Gas Powered Vehicle Ban, Andrew Tabor Jan 2023

Reshaping Incentivization: An Examination Of California’S Gas Powered Vehicle Ban, Andrew Tabor

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

California's decision to ban the sale of new gas powered vehicles (GPVs) was a landmark decision because California's market power has the potential to shift global car production towards cleaner vehicles. As the market for electric vehicles is relatively new, supporting policies will have to be crafted to incentivize the development of this market. This paper looks at the California Solar Initiative for prior examples of how California has handled early green technology adoption policies to see if they focused on equity or efficiency. Additionally, potential re-imaginings of the subsidization and pricing of the Mexican electricity market were looked at …

Developing A Racial Justice Framework For U.S. Private Philanthropy, Mayara Aguiar Rosa Jan 2023

Developing A Racial Justice Framework For U.S. Private Philanthropy, Mayara Aguiar Rosa

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The international development sector has been experiencing an awakening regarding the impacts of colonialism in the field. Calls for anti-colonial practices, cultural competency, and enhanced attention to imbalanced power dynamics have become increasingly prevalent, but despite this shift, the field still shows resistance to explore and intentionally address the role of race. In this project, I investigate how race has shaped development and explore its impacts on the design of development interventions, organizational structuring, and funding allocation. The work proposes alternatives that envisions to consider a racial lens to shift power and tackle inequalities and aims that development programs of …

Appreciating And Promoting Resilience In Families, John W. Eagle, Susan M. Sheridan Jan 2023

Appreciating And Promoting Resilience In Families, John W. Eagle, Susan M. Sheridan

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Families comprise the primary context for a child’s development. As the composition of the family system continues to change, the adult caregivers’ role has become increasingly important in fostering healthy developmental trajectories for their children. Family relationships and interaction styles are central to developing competence and promoting adaptive educational, social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Families give children an informal education (Turnbull et al., 2015), which is a prerequisite to successful experiences in the classroom (Adams & Christenson, 2000). Whereas the school environment sets up developmental tasks for students, the family serves as an important resource for the acquisition of these …

Comparing Emotional Communities: Moravians, Methodists And Halle Pietists, Katherine Faull

Faculty Conference Papers and Presentations

In this paper I will lay out the framework for comparing emotional vocabularies, using two corpora of first-person narratives from the Moravian Church and the Methodist Church from the mid-18th century. The Moravian texts are from the Fetter Lane congregation in London and the majority of the manuscripts are to be found at Moravian Church House. These texts have been transcribed, encoded and published on the Moravian Lives website. The Methodist corpus is compiled from a project housed at the Rylands Library in Manchester, which contains letters of petition to Charles Wesley tranbscribed by volunteers and available online at ( …

Constructing The Establishment Clause, Vincent Phillip Muñoz, Kate Hardiman Rhodes Jan 2023

Constructing The Establishment Clause, Vincent Phillip Muñoz, Kate Hardiman Rhodes

Loyola University Chicago Law Journal

In this Article, we attempt to document how the history of the Supreme Court’s Establishment Clause jurisprudence is a history of constructionism, much of it—though not all—originalist in flavor. We use “construction” in a technical sense and in contradistinction to “interpretation.” Construction is the act of importing meaning into the constitutional text. To document and explain how leading Supreme Court justices have engaged in originalist constructionism, we employ the interpretation-construction distinction as well as two additional analytical concepts recently discussed by leading legal scholars: Sam Bray’s recovery of “the mischief rule” and Jack Balkin’s textual typology of principles, standards, and …

Simulating The Machine Translation Of Low-Resource Languages By Designing A Translator Between English And An Artificially Constructed Language, Michaela Snyder Jan 2023

Simulating The Machine Translation Of Low-Resource Languages By Designing A Translator Between English And An Artificially Constructed Language, Michaela Snyder

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Natural language processing (NLP), or the use of computers to analyze natural language, is a field that relies heavily on syntax. It would seem intuitive that computers would thrive in this area due to their strict syntax requirements, but the syntax of natural languages leaves them unable to properly parse and generate sentences that seem normal to the average speaker. A subfield of NLP, machine translation, works mainly to computerize translation between different languages. Unfortunately, such translation is not without its weaknesses; language documentation is not created equal, and many low-resource languages—languages with relatively few kinds of documentation, most often …
