Between Specificity And Myth: An Analysis Of Carlos Mérida's 'Mexican Costume', Sofia Ortega-Guerrero
Between Specificity And Myth: An Analysis Of Carlos Mérida's 'Mexican Costume', Sofia Ortega-Guerrero
Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections
Sitting evenly upon close-toothed paper, vivid pigments compose harmonies of color and form (Fig. 1). Lines of cerulean wiggle upon a velvety cobalt blue. Between crisp boundaries of ink, veins of the white folio carve out a lattice and tapered fringe to impart legibility: a striped, blue shawl generously cloaks a figure, who nearly disappears beneath her dress. Cinched by a violet-vermillion belt, three bunches of black and white pleats fold in rhythmic lines. A small, low-heeled shoe peeks from below the voluminous skirt, recalling the figure beneath the fabric. From the abundant shawl, a head emerges in profile with …
Novel Correlation Coefficients For Interval-Valued Fermatean Hesitant Fuzzy Sets With Pattern Recognition Application, İbrahi̇m Demi̇r
Novel Correlation Coefficients For Interval-Valued Fermatean Hesitant Fuzzy Sets With Pattern Recognition Application, İbrahi̇m Demi̇r
Turkish Journal of Mathematics
A combination of interval-valued Fermatean fuzzy sets with Fermatean hesitant fuzzy elements in the form of interval values is known as an interval-valued Fermatean hesitant fuzzy set. Since Fermatean hesitant fuzzy sets are effective instruments for representing more complex, ambiguous, and hazy information, interval-valued Fermatean hesitant fuzzy sets are expansions of these sets. This investigation will concentrate on four different types of correlation coefficients for Fermatean hesitant fuzzy sets and expand them to include correlation coefficients and weighted correlation coefficients for interval-valued Fermatean hesitant fuzzy sets. Finally, the numerical examples demonstrate the viability and usefulness of the suggested methodologies in …

Social media is a crucial communication tool (e.g., with 430 million monthly active users in online forums such as Reddit), being an objective of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. One of them (word embeddings) is based on the quotation, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps,” highlighting the importance of context in NLP. Meanwhile, “Context is everything in Emotion Research.” Therefore, we aimed to train a model (W2V) for generating word associations (also known as embeddings) using a popular Coronavirus Reddit forum, validate them using public evidence and apply them to the discovery of context for specific …

This handbook is the final output of the research project Diversity & Intercultural Inclusion in Hospitality (D&ICIH), a TU Dublin’s EDI-funded project that aimed to understand the challenges, barriers, and cultural differences that migrant workers experiences in cafes, cafeterias, catering services and restaurants on university campuses experiences. The research also focused on exploring the gender dimension of how migrant women perceive hospitality work, combined with an intersectionality approach (with a focus on gender and socio-economic status) looking to identify multiple factors of advantages and disadvantages in work and life with in-depth and thematic interviews. The Handbook particularly focuses on two …
Sicilian Puppet Theater: Alterity Or Diversity?, Jo Ann Cavallo
Sicilian Puppet Theater: Alterity Or Diversity?, Jo Ann Cavallo
Representing Alterity through Puppetry and Performing Objects
From the perspective of alterity, the predominant figure of the Other in Sicilian puppet theater is undoubtedly the Saracen (Muslim) aggressor. Yet the Paladins of France cycle, with its over 300 nightly episodes, is replete with stories that eschew an opposition between an “us” and a “them” and instead underscore our common humanity across borders of all kinds. Indeed, camaraderie, friendship, and even romance can readily develop between individuals from the most disparate corners of the globe. My paper focuses on a selection of examples under the guise of both alterity and diversity, the latter achieved especially through heterogamous marriages.
The Other In Southeast Asian Puppetry, Kathy Foley
The Other In Southeast Asian Puppetry, Kathy Foley
Representing Alterity through Puppetry and Performing Objects
Southeast Asian wayang/nang talung puppetry presents the local hero as refined. Three types of “others” repeat: 1) comic foreigners, 2) Raja Sabrangan (“Overseas King”) and followers, and 3) physically deformed clown servants. The last two groups are important and may relate to Austronesian concepts of spirit siblings accompanying each person through life.

A Close Look At The Concept Of Authority In Information Literacy, Stefanie Bluemle
A Close Look At The Concept Of Authority In Information Literacy, Stefanie Bluemle
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
The concept of authority—its definition and the consequences thereof—receives intense scrutiny in library scholarship. This article intervenes in that debate with attention to the larger political context in which the debate is taking place. The article’s purpose is threefold. First, it analyzes the most significant work on authority from philosophy and information studies in order to explicate the concept. Second, it draws on that explication to identify three components of authority that are under-addressed in library literature: a) the distinction between cognitive authority and political authority, b) the means by which authority is recognized or granted to a source, …

Lessons From The Trenches: A Call For Transformative Leadership Perspectives In Tesol, Lauren Stephenson
Education Papers and Journal Articles
In these complex times of high-velocity global events, there is a sense of loss and, in particular, a question as to whom leadership, teacher education and the broader education profession are meant to serve, and what roles and function they should play in our lives. It is therefore appropriate to advocate for a pedagogy of hope and optimism, for enhanced teacher leadership and for continually enhancing individual and collective learning. If such change is grounded in the principles of transformative leadership, we must keep sight of key values of empathy, liberation, emancipation, democracy, equity and justice through our teacher leadership …
An Analysis Of Prominent Historical Figures Throughout History The Character Traits That Defined Them, Jake Mayo
Integrated Studies
Studying Social Sciences and historical figures is a great avenue for understanding ourselves and the greater world surrounding us. Understanding social sciences is important as it allows us to use different systems to better understand ourselves as people and our place in the world. Understanding historical events and historical figures allows us to better understand those who came before us and what made them who they are. We can use both social sciences and understanding historical figures to better understand the present, appreciate diversity, develop empathy and understanding, inspire change, learn from our mistakes, better understand our culture, and enhance …

In-Schools Suspension (Iss) And Out Of School Suspension (Oss): The Effects And Inequities On Special Education Students, Jennifer Connell
Integrated Studies
Abstract
The effects of ISS (In school suspension) and OSS (out-of-school suspension) on special education students is a long-debated issue. Using a high school in a rural, suburban area as a foundation, the history of special education in schools, the disproportionate handing out of punishment between general education and special education students, the effects of segregation versus having special education students in general education classes, as well as how to better support special education students in the educational setting will be explored.
In this disquisition, the history of special education in schools and the effects of suspensions on special education …

The Persuasive Nature Of Mythology And Folklore Through Human Behavior, Entertainment, And Popular Culture, Jaylan Valentine
Integrated Studies
The purpose of the collected research explained throughout this paper is to provide information on how humanity has been shaped through history. Through the recognition of mythology and folklore as the most influential aspects in the overall evolution of mankind. The creation and use of mythology and folklore are directly intertwined with the history that humanity teaches itself through years of schooling, recorded research, and oral communication. The sharing of mythology and folklore has changed throughout history as humanity continued to grow, starting from oral storytelling and arriving at present-day cinematic displays. Some of these cinematic representations are commonly known …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The Internet of Things (IoT) is used in many fields that generate sensitive data, such as healthcare and surveillance. Increased reliance on IoT raised serious information security concerns. This dissertation presents three systems for analyzing and classifying IoT traffic using Deep Learning (DL) models, and a large dataset is built for systems training and evaluation. The first system studies the effect of combining raw data and engineered features to optimize the classification of encrypted and compressed IoT traffic using Engineered Features Classification (EFC), Raw Data Classification (RDC), and combined Raw Data and Engineered Features Classification (RDEFC) approaches. Our results demonstrate …

Pre-trained vision-language (V-L) models such as CLIP have shown excellent generalization ability to downstream tasks. However, they are sensitive to the choice of input text prompts and require careful selection of prompt templates to perform well. Inspired by the Natural Language Processing (NLP) literature, recent CLIP adaptation approaches learn prompts as the textual inputs to fine-tune CLIP for downstream tasks. We note that using prompting to adapt representations in a single branch of CLIP (language or vision) is sub-optimal since it does not allow the flexibility to dynamically adjust both representation spaces on a downstream task. In this work, we …

Despite the subjective nature of semantic textual similarity (STS) and pervasive disagreements in STS annotation, existing benchmarks have used averaged human ratings as gold standard. Averaging masks the true distribution of human opinions on examples of low agreement, and prevents models from capturing the semantic vagueness that the individual ratings represent. In this work, we introduce USTS, the first Uncertainty-aware STS dataset with ∼15,000 Chinese sentence pairs and 150,000 labels, to study collective human opinions in STS. Analysis reveals that neither a scalar nor a single Gaussian fits a set of observed judgments adequately. We further show that current STS …

Chapter 21 of this book, titled Let’s Say Yes: Considerations and Impact of Using Institutional Repositories to Promote Non-Traditional Works, was written by KSU authors, Chelsee Dickson and Heather Hankins.
Over the past two decades, institutional repositories (IRs) have become commonplace among academic libraries. As of 2022, the Open Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) contains entries for 771 IRs in the United States alone, not to mention the proliferation of IRs at colleges and universities around the world.1 Librarians have grown accustomed to making the case for why their institution needs an IR, and based on the data, it …

The 2022 Alabama Executions And The Crisis Of American Capital Punishment, Alexandra L. Klein
The 2022 Alabama Executions And The Crisis Of American Capital Punishment, Alexandra L. Klein
Scholarly Articles
The Death Penalty Information Center described 2022 as “the year of the botched execution” in its 2022 Annual Report. Alabama’s execution errors were especially serious: it attempted to execute four people, botched three of its four executions, and ultimately called off two executions. Alabama’s 2022 executions and its errors are the culmination of common problems in capital punishment across the United States. A full understanding of capital punishment requires an analysis of individual cases, including executions, and analysis of how that case fits within the system of capital punishment. Evaluating a single case may reveal unfairness and arbitrariness, but tracking …

Constructing Written Scientific Explanations: A Conceptual Analysis Supporting Diverse And Exceptional Middle- And High-School Students In Developing Science Disciplinary Literacy, Brooke Moore, Jessica Wright
Advanced Education Programs Faculty Publications
Constructing a written scientific explanation is a science practice that is fundamental in supporting students developing understanding of the natural world in which we live. Engaging in the practice of constructing valid scientific explanations supports students in developing science disciplinary literacy. Yet, writing a scientific explanation can be challenging for diverse and exceptional learners because it requires coordinating multiple, complex skills. This conceptual analysis explores the purpose of constructing written scientific explanations by focusing on the constituent elements and structures of a constructed scientific explanation. These findings are then integrated into a framework to assist Individual Education Program (IEP) teams …

Singer’S Voice Quality - Genetic Or Environmental Influences?, Dobra Baum
Singer’S Voice Quality - Genetic Or Environmental Influences?, Dobra Baum
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
This paper explores the singing voice in terms of the vocal mechanism’s key anatomical features and the physiology of the vocal function. It focuses on phonation and resonation and examines the anatomy and physiology of the vocal tract and the respiratory system. The aim is to determine whether the singer’s voice is only the product of genetics or due to environmental influences. It conducts a procedure to evaluate how singers use their voices to modify breathing, pitch, volume, and timbre through resonance shaping. It also investigates the hereditary transmission of a good singing voice, on chromosome 12q, between relatives, and …
A Qualitative Investigation Of Teachers' Perceptions Of The Impact Of Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion On Lgbtq+ And Student Sensitivity Toward Lgbtq+, Jaclyn Winter
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Multiculturalism and inclusiveness are not new concepts in educational curricula. The question of what falls under that umbrella was already being brought up when earning my Master’s degree at Hofstra University twenty-three years ago. While attending a university workshop about multiculturalism in the classroom, I found the lens was too narrow and calling for expansion. My question was: where does the curriculum represent LGBTQ+ culture? I shared my concern and described a lesson I had designed and taught while student teaching, which focused on Matthew Shepard, tolerance vs. acceptance, and the negative and positive actions that can come out of …

This study deeply examined the Reading Master’s program at our university to understand better how the program itself and the courses within it perpetuated or pushed back on oppressive approaches to reading instruction, assessment, and intervention and how we could make program and course revisions to reflect anti-bias/anti-racist beliefs. We utilized a case study approach, seeking feedback from all involved in or impacted by our program. Beginning with self-study, we (the researchers) met monthly to discuss shared readings on equity-focused topics and interrogate our teaching to understand how our pedagogy and course assignments and readings either upheld or resisted racist …

The police killing of George Floyd added fuel to the simmering flames of racial injustice in America following a string of similarly violent executions during a global pandemic that disproportionately ravaged the health and economic security of Black families and communities. The confluence of these painful realities exposed deep vulnerabilities and renewed a reckoning with the long unfulfilled promise of racial equality, inspiring large-scale protests around the country and across the globe. As with prior movements for racial justice, from slavery abolition to the civil rights movement’s demand to end Jim Crow, protests have been met with extreme force, either …

According to Nundy et al. (2022), editorials aiming to criticize are different from those calling for action since they focus on the problem, not the solution. Currently, there are few studies on how editorials calling for action are written, and how stance adverbials are used in them. Therefore, this paper aims to 1) explore the moves of online English editorials published in Thailand aiming to criticize, 2) study what stance adverbials are used in the editorials, and 3) identify the positions of the stance adverbials in the editorials. 70 online editorials aiming to criticize with the length of 550-700 words …
