Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
BACKGROUND: The global COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPIs) and revealed significant health disparities with reports of increased discrimination and xenophobia. Among AAPIs, the pandemic exacerbated their social, linguistic, and geographic isolation. Social support may be especially important for AAPIs given the salience of collectivism as a cultural value. Another mechanism for support among AAPIs was technology use, as it is generally widespread among this population. However, older adults may not perceive the same benefits. OBJECTIVE: We examined social support and technology use and their relationships with mental and physical health outcomes through the COVID-19 pandemic …

Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This research aims to analyze the discourse strategies that the addressee uses to clarify his intentions; it monitors the mechanisms that enable it to reach the intended indirect meanings through direct meanings. This research derives its importance from its study of examples from a heritage corpus whose issues are based on argument’s act of interrogation based on the axes of question and answer, in the book: Al-Hawamil and Al-Shawamil of Al-Tawhidi and Miskawayeh. In achieving this, he seeks to analyze the diversity of the specific strategies of the addressee in reaching his goals, and to what extent the mechanisms used …

The Misunderstood History Of Textualism, Tara Leigh Grove
The Misunderstood History Of Textualism, Tara Leigh Grove
Northwestern University Law Review
This Article challenges widespread assumptions about the history of textualism. Jurists and scholars have sought for decades to distinguish “modern textualism” from the so-called “plain meaning school” of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries—an approach that both textualists and non-textualists alike have long viewed as improperly “literal” and “wooden.” This Article shows that this conventional historical account is incorrect. Based on a study of statutory cases from 1789 to 1945 that use the term “plain meaning” or similar terms, this Article reveals that, under the actual plain meaning approach, the Supreme Court did not ignore context but looked to …

Numeracy
The introduction in November 2022 of ChatGPT, a freely available language-based artificial intelligence, has led to concerns among some educators about the feasibility and benefits of teaching basic writing and critical thinking skills to students in the context of easily accessed, AI-based cheating mechanisms. As of now, ChatGPT can write pretty convincing student-level prose, but it is still not very good at answering quantitatively rich questions. Therefore, for the time being, the preceding concerns may not be shared by a large portion of the numeracy education community. However, as Google and WolframAlpha are definitely capable of answering standard and some …

Numeracy
Because people are constantly confronted with numbers and mathematical concepts in the news, we have embarked on a project to create journalism that can support news users’ number skills. But doing so requires understanding (1) journalists’ ability to reason with numbers, (2) other adults’ ability to do so, and (3) the attributes and affordances of news. In this paper, we focus on the relationship between adults’ news habits and their quantitative reasoning skills. We collected data from a sample of 1,200 US adults, testing their ability to interpret statistical results and asking them to report their news habits. The assessment …

Forgotten "People": Reviving Textualism In The Fourth Amendment, Peter C. Douglas
Forgotten "People": Reviving Textualism In The Fourth Amendment, Peter C. Douglas
San Diego Law Review
For more than a century, the Supreme Court has struggled to develop a coherent and sustainable theory of the Fourth Amendment. Before the ink is dry on a new Fourth Amendment opinion, it is cabined, abrogated, or outright overruled. As one scholar has commented, the “evolution of Fourth Amendment doctrine over the past century bears a striking resemblance to Hamlet’s descent into insanity.” While the Court vacillates between “theories” of the Fourth Amendment that might bring clarity to a difficult body of constitutional law, the rights it bespeaks lie vulnerable and unprotected. This Article argues that the problem flows from …
Portals To Learning: Threshold Concepts In Art History Teaching And Learning, Rhonda L. Reymond
Portals To Learning: Threshold Concepts In Art History Teaching And Learning, Rhonda L. Reymond
Art History Pedagogy & Practice
Threshold concepts are conceived of as portals to learning that open previously inaccessible ways of thinking. They encompass specific ideas within a discipline that must be mastered before the learner can progress. The process of identifying threshold concepts can reveal hidden or unacknowledged fundamental disciplinary beliefs and epistemology. Integrating a threshold concepts framework into the scholarship of teaching and learning in art history (SoTL-AH) can help faculty diagnose and anticipate when students are likely to encounter troublesome knowledge within an art history course. Distinguishing these thresholds can aid instructors in designing courses that prepare for specific stages that present conceptual …
Approaching Language As A Human Factor In Aviation: The Challenges Of Pilot Language Training In The Academic Level In Brazil, Aline Pacheco, Tales Figueiredo Silva
Approaching Language As A Human Factor In Aviation: The Challenges Of Pilot Language Training In The Academic Level In Brazil, Aline Pacheco, Tales Figueiredo Silva
National Training Aircraft Symposium (NTAS)
Language training for pilots poses challenges worldwide as the use of Aviation English entails a number of features portrayed from a Human Factors perspective. Language proficiency is imperative, as required by the ICAO DOC 9835 compliance. It should be noted, however, that a thorough comprehension of effective communication in aviation as a non-technical skill surpasses the particular understanding of issues in the linguistic level, considering that most of the participants in aeronautical communications are non-native speakers of English and the cultural features underlying the linguistic behavior. This awareness must be accounted in training programs, especially in the academic level, where …

National Development And The Sustainability Of Mining In The Atacama Desert, Chile, Dakota Soleil Osgood
Capstone Collection
As climate change continues to intensify on a global scale, efforts have been made to implement renewable energies and progressive technologies. These tools are critical in the shift towards a more sustainable practice, and yet analysis of localized impacts from the development of these mechanisms is inadequate. Chile has been and continues to be a leading country in mineral extraction, with an economic history founded in the mining industry. The establishment of mining in Chile as a progressive tool has aided the social and economic development of the nation. Consequences of mining extraction, however, include intensive environmental degradation, human rights …

The Adaptive Capacity To Implement Climate Migration Policy In Response To Sea-Level Rise In The Maldives, Kelsey Garrett
Capstone Collection
This exploratory study is centered on the increasing harmful impacts of climate change and its connection to human life. The effects are exacerbating the current drivers of migration like livelihoods, security, and politics. People are losing their homes and livelihoods because of drought, rising seas, or increasing natural disasters. Millions of people are. Displaced by climate events every year, the number is expected to increase. Due to this, there is value in studying climate change and migration. Amongst the most vulnerable are those living in Small Island Developing States (SIDS). This exploratory study examined the Maldives to understand their adaptive …

The activities of Mongolic-speaking populations, a large group of people in eastern Eurasia, have important impact on the history of East Asia and other parts of Eurasia. Most previous genetic research of East Asian populations, including ancient DNA studies, have involved samples from Mongolic-speaking populations or their ancient relatives. Here, we summarized frequency data of paternal Y-chromosome haplogroups from all available literature about Mongolic-speaking populations from 1999 to 2019. Fourteen paternal components were identified and six of them were proposed as major and common components in ancestor groups of Mongolic-speaking populations. We thoroughly discussed the possible origin, migration patterns, and …

The coronavirus disease of 2019 pandemic has catalyzed the rapid development of mRNA vaccines, whereas, how to optimize the mRNA sequence of exogenous gene such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike to fit human cells remains a critical challenge. A new algorithm, iDRO (integrated deep-learning-based mRNA optimization), is developed to optimize multiple components of mRNA sequences based on given amino acid sequences of target protein. Considering the biological constraints, we divided iDRO into two steps: open reading frame (ORF) optimization and 5' untranslated region (UTR) and 3'UTR generation. In ORF optimization, BiLSTM-CRF (bidirectional long-short-term memory with conditional random …
Understanding The Experiences Of Latino Medical Students In A Learning Medical Environment, Leslie García
Understanding The Experiences Of Latino Medical Students In A Learning Medical Environment, Leslie García
Dissertations and Theses
Very little is known about the experiences and perceptions of underrepresented minority (URiM) medical students in the U.S. allopathic medical schools. The limited literature posits URiMs experience more adverse experiences in the learning environment and have different learning outcomes in comparison to their White peer counterparts. Latino medical students represent 7.1% of all entering medical students across all U.S. medical schools. While they represent the largest ethnic minority in the United States within parity lack representation among the physician workforce [sic]. There is a dearth of knowledge of what factors contribute to the success of Latino medical students progressing in …

Rogue Entrepreneurship, Russ Mcbride, Mark D. Packard, Brent B. Clark
Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications
We suggest a new category of “rogue entrepreneurship,” that describes entrepreneurial activity where the core business idea violates established or expert consensus, to be contrasted with “conforming entrepreneurship,” where it does not. There are large entrepreneurial rents hidden behind a bulwark of expert consensus that predicts doom for a venture based upon a rogue and unlikely claim. The “rogue” cases, where the predominant assessment context is different from the entrepreneur’s, result in broad skepticism against the entrepreneurial claim. We explain what rogue entrepreneurship is and how it works.

Sentiment Analysis is a modern discipline at the crossroads of data mining and natural language processing. It is concerned with the computational treatment of public moods shared in the form of text over social networking websites. Social media users express their feelings in conversations through cross-lingual terms, intensifiers, enhancers, reducers, symbols, and Net Lingo. However, the generic Sentiment Analysis (SA) research lacks comprehensive coverage about such abstruseness. In particular, they are inapt in the semantic orientation of Crosslingual based code switching, capitalization and accentuation of opinionative text due to the lack of annotated corpora, computational resources, linguistic processing and inefficient …

Some Remarks On The Translation Of The Term Ilm Al-Kalām Into English, Ayman Hammoudeh Haj-Yasīn
Some Remarks On The Translation Of The Term Ilm Al-Kalām Into English, Ayman Hammoudeh Haj-Yasīn
Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات
The aim of this study is twofold. First, it aims to clarify the meaning of the Arabic term llm al-kalām with reference to modern scholarship of the field of Islamic Studies. The second one is to examine the translation of this term into English. The study strives to show that the translation of this term is influenced by dominant interpretations in the target language and culture, making it clear that translators do more than establishing linguistic equivalence between two terms. Translators, it is argued, negotiate not only two languages and two cultures, but also different and competing interpretations (ideas, values, …

Stigma Communication Surrounding Nonmedical Opioid Use Among Affected Family Members, Emily Pasman, Sydney O'Shay, Danielle Hicks, Stella M. Hicks, Elizabeth Agius, Suzanne Brown
Publications
A growing body of research demonstrates the role of language in stigma toward nonmedical opioid use (NMOU). Terms like “substance abuser” perpetuate stereotypes and evoke punitive judgments. This study examines how affected family members (AFMs) communicate stigma when discussing their loved one’s NMOU. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 34 adults with a close family member with a history of NMOU. An iterative approach was used to analyze instances when stigmatizing terms or messages were used. AFMs described people engaged in NMOU as underweight, “dirty,” or “nodding off,” and often labeled these individuals “addicts” or opioid “abusers.” Responsibility for the NMOU …
The Puzzle Of Procedural Originalism, Mila Sohoni
The Puzzle Of Procedural Originalism, Mila Sohoni
Duke Law Journal
On a daily basis, lawyers and judges consult and apply the rules of subject matter jurisdiction and personal jurisdiction. These doctrines—the workhorses of procedural law—ostensibly spring from the Constitution’s text, but their substance owes more to considerations of fairness, efficiency, and sound policy than it does to original meaning. Indeed, these doctrines are among the most openly and obviously nonoriginalist doctrines in constitutional law. Curiously, the originalist movement has almost totally ignored this everyday terrain. That is beginning to change. Recent overtures by Supreme Court Justices suggest that originalists are now poised to advance into the field of civil procedure. …

Content-Based Image Retrieval System Using Color Moment And Bag Of Visual Words With Local Binary Pattern, Rasha Q. Hassan, Zainab N. Sultani, Ban N. Dhannoon
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Researchers have recently focused their attention on Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR). It has emerged as one of the most fascinating areas in image processing and computer vision. With CBIR, the most comparable pictures that match the query image are pulled from an image database. As a result, it necessitates feature extraction (Local / Global) and similarity calculation. This paper uses a CBIR technique to determine the images that best match the image query by utilizing both global and local image features. A color moment is used for global features to describe the complete image. Local Binary Pattern (LBP) as a …
