Being Multicultural In The Workplace, Fiorella Morales
Being Multicultural In The Workplace, Fiorella Morales
Dissertations
As the workforce becomes increasingly diverse and organizations elevate their efforts to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), it is critical to engage in a deeper investigation of the experiences of multicultural individuals at work. In this qualitative study, nine multicultural individuals were interviewed using a sociological lens to gain their perspective on the relationship between their identity and their work experiences. The primary research questions that guided this study were: (a) how do multicultural individuals influence the workplace? In turn, (b) how do their workplace experiences affect their identity and sense of self? Data was coded and …

Germania Our Mother, Columbia Our Bride: Das Arkansas Echo In The First World War, Harrison Mitchell
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the tone and content that appeared in the German-language Arkansas newspaper, Das Arkansas Echo, during the First World War. The newspaper’s content between the American neutrality period (1914-1917) was compared to the American war period (1917-1918) to see how it changed as political situations changed and anti-German sentiment grew. Additionally, the actions of the Echo’s editorial staff outside of the newspaper were explored within the context of their published content. This thesis found that both periods contrasted sharply with each other. The newspaper expressed support for the Central Powers and the actions of Germany in the American …

Consider the following fact pattern.
Alex paints some original works on canvas and posts photos of them online. Becca downloads those images and uses them to train an AI (training configures the AI’s model parameters to useful values). Becca posts the resulting trained parameter values on her website under a license that reserves to Becca the right to use the parameters commercially. Cory uses those parameter values in a program that is designed to produce artwork. Cory clicks create and the program produces a work. This work is new to Cory, but it looks a lot like one of Alex’s …

Old Manuscript Collection Of Pontianak Community, Titik Pudjiastuti
International Review of Humanities Studies
Similar to the Western and Eastern parts of Indonesia, the central part of the archipelago was also full of ancient kingdoms with their glorious history in the fields of culture, social, economy and politics. These include the sultanates found in five Kalimantan provinces. This writing focuses on West Kalimantan province, particularly in Pontianak city. The initial research in 2015 reveals that there are many ancient manuscripts in Pontianak, many of which are not in good condition. Such finding prompts several questions: Who are their current owners? What kind of old manuscripts found in Pontianak? How are their current conditions? This …

Discrimination Against Joseonjok In Hwanghae Movie, Syifa Fatimazzahroh, Eva Latifah
International Review of Humanities Studies
This research analyzes the discrimination against migrants returning to their homeland. The discrimination occurs because migrants are considered to have no sense of shared fortune and solidarity when the condition of the country was unstable. The government efforts to recall them to return to the country are not often responded well by the local community. They tend to discriminate and reject the existence of migrants who return as brothers. It represents in the movie Hwanghae (2010) by the director Na Hong Jin as a corpus. Thus, this research uses discrimination theory to analyze research problems a ethnic identity theory to …

The Recent Emergence Of White Supremacist Society In The United States: A Critical Discourse Analysis In Modern Ku Klux Klan, Aprilia Zainatul Hussna
International Review of Humanities Studies
This paper examines the discourse in Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, one of the most recently active chapters of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). With the flyering (spreading flyers/pamphlets) incidents that spiked during and in the aftermath the Charlottesville protests in 2017, in the few recent years some of the more active chapters of KKK have steadily distributed the flyers in the United States. Recognizing the Ku Klux Klan’s historical role within the white supremacist movement and its participation in the Unite the Right rally, it is important to understand the meaning behind the discourse and the …

Ambivalence In Gender Portrayals In Goosebumps (2015) And Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween (2018), Tyasyifa Wimahavinda Kardono, Dhita Hapsarani
International Review of Humanities Studies
The horror genre is notorious for sexist depictions of female heroines, which heavily imposes traditional gender stereotypes. This paper analyses Goosebumps (2015) and Goosebumps: Haunted Halloween (2018), which are the movie adaptations of R.L Stine’s horror book series. It aims to see the possibility of the female heroines and male heroes to defy conventional gender stereotypes and determine the female heroines’ agency as horror movies tend to objectify the female characters. This paper uses the Cult of True Womanhood (Welter, 1966), Male Gender Role Identity (Pleck, 1981) and representation theory (Hall, 1997) to analyse the dialogues and interaction of the …
A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby
A Universe Of Mirrors: The Mirror Metaphor In Ibn ʿArabī’S Thought In Relation To Ontology, Knowledge, And Perfection, Basma Eletreby
Theses and Dissertations
The mirror metaphor is ubiquitous in sufi texts. It operates uniquely in Ibn ʿArabī’s thought and writings as a representation of his conception of the cosmos. Being, knowledge, and perfection are among the seminal themes of al-Shaykh al-Akbar’s thought, and the mirror metaphor is employed in revealing their reality in his writings. As opposed to Unity of Being, a term that Ibn ʿArabī does not employ, the mirror embodies the pillars of Ibn ʿArabī’s conception of Being through representing the quintessential huwa lā huwa, the configuration of oneness and manyness, and most importantly, the definition of the relation between God …

An Analysis Of The Ash’Ari-Mu’Tazilite Conflict In The Ḥāshiya Of Ibn Al- Munayyir In Al-Kashshāf By Al-Zamakhsharī, Nabil Haskanbancha
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I analyze the Sunni Ash’ari response to the Mu’tazilite Qurʾan commentary al- Kashshāf written by al-Zamakhsharī (d.538/1144), and the significant role of the gloss commentary (hashiyā) in highlighting the theological debates between Ash’ari and Mu’tazilite scholars. Alongside the main commentary, this thesis demonstrates the pivotal role of the hashiyā in Islamic studies through its intersection with theology and philology, uncovering active debates on the critical interpretations of the text by exegetes. Al-Kashshāf is the most commented text in the tafsir genre despite its Mu’tazilite influence, mostly receiving criticisms from conservative Sunni scholars. The first Ash’ari scholar to …

The Family Values: Is It Really About The Family? Analyzing The Family In The Egyptian Discourse Through A Sociological Lens, Taher Sabala
Theses and Dissertations
The Egyptian state has put on its shoulders the responsibility of protecting the family and its values. But how this family, in a massive society like Egypt, can be defined? In this paper, I argue that it has never been about protecting the family. However, it is an attempt to shape the citizens into small separate hives which give the State the power to gain access to the intimate details of its citizens’ lives through which they can be easily monitored, managed, and controlled. By analyzing Michel Foucault’s work on government, power, sexuality, and family, I travel through a historical …

Using humor in the language classroom has proven to be an effective pedagogical teaching tool that builds rapport between students and teachers. It also reduces anxiety and affective filter as well as increases students’ performance and willingness to communicate in class using their L2 (Azizinezhad & Hashemi, 2011; Banks, 2014; Soares, 2015). Previous studies used humor broadly starting from humorous comments in class to funny TV shows, movies, or songs. Some studies went further using funny memes in class and fewer studies went all the way making students create memes as part of their class requirements (Purnama, 2017). Results of …

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The voyage data recorder (VDR) is a data recording system that aims to provide all navigational, positional, communicational, sensor, control and command information for data-driven investigation of accidents onboard ships. Due to the increasing dependence on interconnected networks, cybersecurity threats are one of the most severe issues and critical problems when it comes to safeguarding sensitive information and assets. Cybersecurity issues are extremely important for the VDR, considering that modern VDRs may have internet connections for data transfer, network links to the ship's critical systems and the capacity to record potentially sensitive data. Thus, this research adopted failure modes and …

The Phenomenon Of Stigmatization: The Case Oh Delinquency And Repeated Deeds In Tunisian Society, Ramzi Tej
An-Najah University Journal for Research - B (Humanities)
The violations of regulatory rules, martial and religious laws, and social mores were among the reasons that led to the spread of various social phenomena. The latter contributed to social communication disorder and created immense abysses within societies such as immorality, violence and delinquency. Based on the explanatory theories of criminology or criminal sociology, the stigma of deviance was classified as a psychosocial disorder that the stigmatized suffers from, which had been confirmed by various researches starting from 1930s till 1950s. However, sociologists and experts in historical anthropology surpassed the concepts of linguistic terms, which were chiefly investigated by psychologists, …

Promoting Health And Wellness In Young Children: Preschool Assessment, Bruce A. Bracken, Lea A. Theodore
Perspectives on Early Childhood Psychology and Education
Children’s formative development is most critical during the preschool years. It is during the earliest years of a child’s life when the fundamental building blocks of learning, cognitive development, academic achievement, information processing, language, and interpersonal skills are acquired and developed. Preschools are well suited to shape children’s overall health and well-being, with burgeoning research demonstrating a relationship between early life experiences and subsequent adult health. Preschool and quality daycare provide rich opportunities for children’s learning, yielding long-lasting and significant effects. Comprehensive preschool assessment sheds light on aspects of the whole child, providing early identification of potential problems and the …

To Find A Seat: Tracing The Ideoscape Of Seats In The Pathars’ Lifeworld In Penang, Sanjeh Kumar Raman, Safial Aqbar Zakaria
Interiority
This article examines the roles taken by seats in the buildings that form the lifeworld of Pathars—traditional Tamil goldsmiths—as an ideoscape following their migration to Penang during the British colonial period in the 19th century. This study used a phenomenological ethnography method to bring Pathars’ lived experiences with their physical environment to the forefront, highlighting the subjectiveness of architecture that shapes their lifeworld. The ideoscape of seats is analysed in themes to examine the power and politics of seats in the Pathars’ lifeworlds, including present-day migrant workers. To find a seat is a metaphor that elicits discussion on Pathars’ existential …
