The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the popular Duolingo App on learning English in Thailand. Parts of the Duolingo English course for Thai speakers were used in a classroom-based intervention with two sections of English for Professional Purposes courses at a Thai university (n = 128). The students were split into two groups of users (n = 70) and non-users (n = 58), and a pre-test/post-test assessment of verb tense knowledge was conducted. The results showed that the Duolingo users had a significantly higher mean improvement in verb tense knowledge. Multiple regression showed that frequency …

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages, which was originally meant for the European context is now being widely accepted by many non-European countries. The education system in Malaysia, as outlined in the English Language Education Roadmap for Malaysia (2015-2025), has adopted the framework. Although this has taken place at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, the present study zooms in on the tertiary level only. Specifically, it offers a critical analysis of implementing CEFR at a language faculty of one of the public universities in Malaysia. In doing so, it has drawn on Phillips and Ochs’s (2003) framework …

The widespread adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, specifically ChatGPT, within pedagogy has engendered a dialogue regarding ethical implications. This article explores the ethical implications associated with using ChatGPT in the context of language teaching and learning. While we acknowledge the potential of ChatGPT in supporting and enhancing language teaching and learning, we also recognize its ethical issues. We argue that the responsible implementation of ChatGPT necessitates ethical considerations to ensure conscientious usage, as this is crucial in mitigating potential harms and ensuring that its development and utilization align with societal and professional values as language teachers. Critical ethical considerations …

Gamification In Action: Trends And Opportunities In Language Teaching And Learning Practices, Kittichai Nilubol, Pragasit Sitthitikul
PASAA
Gamification is a controversial topic in the field of education, with both proponents and opponents. However, what exactly gamification is and why it has become popular are worth exploring. This academic article first defines the terms “game” and “gamification” in order to differentiate them. Next, the article provides core features of gamification in an educational context as explained by previous studies and pinpoints the disparity between the concept of gamification and game-based learning in practice. Additionally, the positive impact of gamification in language learning and gamification and gamebased research activities that bridge the concept of gamified information systems are discussed. …

The Effect Of Demographic Characteristics On The Mathematics Performance Of Middle School Students On A Standardized Examination, Muteb Alanazi
The Effect Of Demographic Characteristics On The Mathematics Performance Of Middle School Students On A Standardized Examination, Muteb Alanazi
Dissertations (2016-Present)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of the demographic characteristics of middle school students on their mathematics performance on the STAAR examination. More specifically, this study examined the effect of the variables gender, ethnicity, and at-risk status, separate and collectively, on the four mathematics components (numerical representation and relationships, computations and algebraic, geometry and measurement and data analysis and personal financial literacy) of the STAAR’s examination among middle school students. Additionally, a 2x2x3 factorial design was used in the students. Two hundred forty (240) eighth-grade students enrolled in middle schools in the southern region of the …

Behaviorist Ethics In A Polynesian Community: Anuta, Solomon Islands, Richard Feinberg, Gina Zavota
Behaviorist Ethics In A Polynesian Community: Anuta, Solomon Islands, Richard Feinberg, Gina Zavota
Pacific Studies
In this essay, we explore the ethical system of Anuta, a remote Polynesian community in the Solomon Islands. We discuss the system’s underlying premises, the way in which the elements fit together into a coherent whole, and how the system might be characterized in terms familiar to Western philosophers and social scientists. In particular, Anutans draw a connection between happiness, as expressed in overt laughter, and moral virtue. Thus, we argue, Anutan ethics can reasonably be described as “utilitarian” and “behaviorist” and, on that basis, be compared with ethical systems found in other cultural and geographic regions.

(Wp 2023-06) Richard Arena On Sraffa And Wittgenstein, John B. Davis
(Wp 2023-06) Richard Arena On Sraffa And Wittgenstein, John B. Davis
Economics Working Papers
This paper discusses Richard Arena’s insightful and original contributions to interpreting the important interaction between Piero Sraffa and Ludwig Wittgenstein. It discusses this in terms of dilemmas they each encountered in transitions in their thinking in the 1930s, emphasizes the influence of Sraffa’s unpublished “Surplus Product” text, compares Sraffa’s critique of “natural science point of view” and Wittgenstein’s critique of logical form, and compares Sraffa’s later understanding of the relationship between production and distribution and Wittgenstein’s later understanding of forms of life and language-games. The paper argues this thinking opened up a approach to economic philosophy in connection with the …

This study examines women of color entrepreneurs’ experience of professional mentoring and whether it contributed to their success. This study identified successful professional mentoring elements for women of color entrepreneurs and assessed professional …
Goostly Coumforte In God: The Rhetoric Of Mysticism In The Cloud Of Unknowing, Clinton M. Sensat
Goostly Coumforte In God: The Rhetoric Of Mysticism In The Cloud Of Unknowing, Clinton M. Sensat
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper I analyze the rhetoric of the Cloud of Unknowing by an anonymous fourteenth-century English Catholic mystic. First, I situate the Cloud in its tradition, both spiritual and rhetorical. Then, after analyzing the linguistic arts employed, I engage in a sustained examination of the Cloud’s rhetorical technique. Ultimately, I conclude that the author of the Cloud succeeds in his rhetorical goals, even if some of his strategies are less successful than he perhaps believes, and that he does so through the use of concrete language and an appeal to the ethos of Christian monastic friendship.

Vocational High School Students’ Metacognitive Reading Strategy And Volition In Language Learning: A Correlational Study, Erina Andriani
Vocational High School Students’ Metacognitive Reading Strategy And Volition In Language Learning: A Correlational Study, Erina Andriani
PASAA
Volition helps students who are in the reading process to achieve their objectives. It converts their motivation into actual actions they need to undergo to reach the predetermined goals. Such actions may include the use of strategies, whether to manage their cognition, emotions, or distractions, that may elevate their reading comprehension and ultimately the desired achievements in conducting such activity. Metacognitive reading strategies can be beneficial to assist students in regulating those aspects. Therefore, students’ volition may predict the use of metacognitive reading strategies, as volition drives students to use strategies in general. However, previous studies rarely investigate the correlation …

Making It Stick: Exploring Teaching Tools For Choreography Retention In High School Musicals, Katie Arjona
Making It Stick: Exploring Teaching Tools For Choreography Retention In High School Musicals, Katie Arjona
Master's Theses
Dancers often perform pieces that linger in their brains and bodies long after they are danced on stage. For some dancers, the use of unique pieces of music, unusual technical elements, or an emotional connection to the movement has imprinted choreography in the dancer’s body and mind. In preparation for musicals done at the high school level, dancers are often asked to learn choreography to multiple songs within a short span of time and often have little dance training. This creates a unique position for the high school choreographer who will not only have to teach the actors the steps …

Beaches, Bumps, And Milkshakes: A Humanizing, Open, And Dialogic, Postformal Autoethnographic Study Of An Experiential Learning Academy, Eric Anthony Karahalis
Theses & Dissertations
The dominant educational paradigm is rooted in a Platonic, Cartesian, and Piagetian mind-supremacist epistemology that subordinates the body and experience to the mind, ideas, and objective concepts. This reduces students to cognitive receptors of information in a detached, decontextualized, and dehumanizing classroom, i.e., the banking educational model (Freire, 2018; hooks,1994). Students are forced to sit at desks for several hours a day and expected to open their minds and ignore the body’s needs. This educational model is dehumanizing because it only approaches students and learning through one epistemological lens and separates learning from the world. On the other hand, experiential …
The Use Of Stem Gaming To Promote Hearing Health In Youth, Catelyn D. Tweeten
The Use Of Stem Gaming To Promote Hearing Health In Youth, Catelyn D. Tweeten
Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones
Hearing loss prevention programs targeting youth have been implemented in many forms to teach younger populations about hearing health to prevent noise-induced hearing loss. Some hearing loss prevention programs, such as Dangerous Decibels®, are based on health communication science and aim to not only increase youth’s knowledge about noise-induced hearing loss, but positively change their attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors towards safe listening practices. The purpose of this project was to investigate how an educational computer game called Song of the Starbird could potentially be used as an effective hearing health promotion tool for students with normal hearing and students with …
Autobiographical Traces In Chantal Akerman’S Jeanne Dielman And Meetings With Anna, Stephen Carruthers
Autobiographical Traces In Chantal Akerman’S Jeanne Dielman And Meetings With Anna, Stephen Carruthers
Research Outputs: 2025-Present
This article explores two seminal films Akerman wrote and directed early in her career, Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles (1975) and Les Rendez-vous d’Anna (Meetings with Anna) (1978), in the context of her later autobiographical writings, Une famille à Bruxelles (1998) and Ma mère rit (2013) (My Mother Laughs). While scripted many years earlier, the two films address themes later developed in Ma mère rit and Une famille à Bruxelles, notably Akerman’s intense relationship with her mother and the trauma of the Shoah. The article outlines the key elements of the two films and autobiographical works and …

Examining Social Factors Influencing Latino Students' Academic Learning In Rio Grande Valley Via A Quantitative Design, David T. Smith
Theses and Dissertations
This research study aimed to examine the social factors that could influence the academic learning experiences of Latino college students. Hispanic students are pursuing post-secondary degrees at a higher rate than in previous years. Many Hispanics represent their respective family members as the first members of their respective families to attend college (Trevino & DeFreitas, 2014). The academic achievement of Latino college students is becoming a major concern in the United States due to their growing population and special needs (Trevino & DeFreitas, 2014).
It is imperative to examine the social factors that could affect the academic learning experiences of …
Self Portraits: How The Arts May Be The Key To Equitable And Authentic Engagement For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Student Populations, Betsy Sostak
Dissertations
As the linguistic and cultural diversity across America’s classrooms steadily increases, educators are searching for ways to meet the needs of their students. The linguistic and cultural resources our students bring are a tremendous asset, yet our country has not been able to fully realize the potential of a diverse population. While multilingual students are often perceived to lack background knowledge, connections to school, and linguistic resources, the arts have the capacity to increase engagement, connect to diverse cultural backgrounds, and transcend language barriers. In this study, I explore the ways in which educational equity may be achieved to a …

Black Digital Spaces: Theorizing Resistance In The Wake Of Racist Technology, Shannan Moore
Graduate Student Research Fellowship
In the wake of major technological advancement, social media has increasingly become a communal space of daily congregation, particularly for Black people. This paper specifically explores how the Black Diaspora navigates these spaces at a complex intersection of social media and transnational Black histories. I draw from critical Internet studies, Black Diaspora studies, Black feminisms, and media studies to investigate how new technology allows Black folk to engage in conversations about our identity, community, and resistance. Employing a critical ethnographic approach, this paper analyzes online discourse within the Black community about Marvel's Black Panther (2018). This analysis emphasizes the parallels …
They Need Rappers Like Me: A Poetic Analysis Of Identity And Disturbance In Women’S Rap Music, Willard Justice
They Need Rappers Like Me: A Poetic Analysis Of Identity And Disturbance In Women’S Rap Music, Willard Justice
Honors College
This thesis explores the theme of identity in rap music produced by Black women in the past five years (2017-2023). Hip hop feminism's theoretical underpinnings and viability are first established, then the impact that Black women rappers have on their listeners is encapsulated in a statement of significance. After establishing those ideas as a framework, ten songs by three main performers are analyzed for their use of disrespectability politics in developing or protecting the identity of the author. Each of these songs adds the author's voice to the conversation. Disrespectability politics owes much to Onika Maraj, who laid the groundwork …
