Finding Words For God: Poetic Foraging In Louise Glück's The Wild Iris, Rachel Cardall
Finding Words For God: Poetic Foraging In Louise Glück's The Wild Iris, Rachel Cardall
Theses and Dissertations
The primary speaker of Louise Glück's The Wild Iris is a wanderer in her own garden. She relentlessly searches for God among her foxgloves and daisies, straining to hear God's voice. Two other speakers, God and the collective plants of the garden, offer their perspectives without acknowledgement by the human speaker. Many critics read these two other speakers as, in fact, narcissistic projections of the human speaker, a God and a world made in her own image. In this thesis, I clarify that the kind of narcissistic projection that occurs in The Wild Iris is actually productive for genuine spiritual …
The Aesthetics Of Social Innovation: The Body As The Site Of Change, Amy Phillips
The Aesthetics Of Social Innovation: The Body As The Site Of Change, Amy Phillips
Masters Projects
Social innovation scholarship often prioritizes tangible, product-based answers to questions of societal justice without examining the catalyst for change. Exploring the potential of the body to serve as a site of social innovation may complement the goals of emerging paradigms of social innovation that embrace new forms of knowing. The sensory knowledge developed through methods such as Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed is systematized in the multidisciplinary field of somaesthetics, which looks closely at the disciplined cultivation of the body. This research project tracked the perceived body awareness and self-growth of formerly incarcerated individuals following four applied theatre workshops. …

Defining Gastrocriticism As A Critical Paradigm On The Example Of Irish Literature And Food Writing: A Vade Mecum, Anke Klitzing
Defining Gastrocriticism As A Critical Paradigm On The Example Of Irish Literature And Food Writing: A Vade Mecum, Anke Klitzing
Doctoral
The aim of this study is to map out the gastrocritical approach, using Irish literature and writing to test its premises, and to provide a vade mecum for its practical application, particularly for interdisciplinary scholars. The gastrocritical approach furnishes a “culinary lens” for reading food and foodways in imaginative texts, informed by work in the field of food studies and gastronomy. The approach was broadly characterised by Tobin in 2002, but only sparsely used since. The past fifteen years have seen an increasing self-awareness and reflexivity in the field of literary food studies. As the field matures, there have been …

Engaging Stakeholders To Achieve The Sdgs: The Case Of The Province Of Bataan, Sherilyn F. Valdecañas, Maria Assunta C. Cuyegkeng
Journal of Management for Global Sustainability
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 ASD) was designed to address global problems like poverty, conservation of the planet, and peace and prosperity. Successfully pursuing it, however, will be highly dependent on how local and regional governments implement the agenda—the rapid realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would involve various actors ranging from civil society organizations to the academe, the corporate sector, and many private individuals. This paper presents a case study on stakeholder engagement undertaken at the local level to achieve the SDGs, specifically in the Philippine province of Bataan. The selection of Bataan Province stems from …
Drawing About Writing: Exploring Egyptian Middle School Students’ Writing Motivation And Perceptions, Maryam Elbayady
Drawing About Writing: Exploring Egyptian Middle School Students’ Writing Motivation And Perceptions, Maryam Elbayady
Theses and Dissertations
The principal aim of this study is to explore Egyptian middle school students’ perceptions of their writing experiences using artistic expression, specifically drawings. It also aims to understand their levels of writing motivation using the Self-Beliefs, Writing-Beliefs, and Attitude Survey (SWAS) (Wright et al., 2019). Finally, it examines the relationships among participants’ perceptions, motivation, and their narrative writing performance. The view that students’ voices are valuable to research geared towards school improvement has largely propelled this study (Bland, 2018; Zumbrunn et al., 2017). In addition, due to the limited literature about middle school students enrolled at private Egyptian schools, this …
The Effect Of Reading Habits On Academic Success, Taylor Hicks
The Effect Of Reading Habits On Academic Success, Taylor Hicks
Masters Projects
The goal of most students is to achieve academic success. In order to be successful, students must form healthy reading habits because there is a positive correlation between academic success and reading habits. The more students read, the greater their chances of performing well academically. By participating in frequent reading, students will, not only perform well in school, they will also expand their vocabulary, improve their writing skills, and sharpen their critical thinking skills. We are in the midst of a literacy crisis, though. Students are choosing other avenues for entertainment instead of reading. This could potentially have detrimental consequences. …
"Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters': An Examination Of The Monstrous And The Abject In American Literature, Carol Wardell
"Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters': An Examination Of The Monstrous And The Abject In American Literature, Carol Wardell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
“‘Sometimes Human Places Create Inhuman Monsters’: An Examination of the Monstrous and the Abject in American Gothic Literature” defines “characters” in select texts as monstrous beings. These identified beings engage Julia Kristeva’s abject and differ from a grotesque. Whereas a grotesque character is often supportive in relation to the development of the story, the characters I have identified are crucial to the text. Without these characters and the abjection these monstrous beings evoke, the story would not develop in the same manner, have the same repercussions, nor have the same representation of cultural anxieties. In order to develop a definition …
Humankind – Bias In Our Head, Luying Li
Humankind – Bias In Our Head, Luying Li
Theses
"HumanKind" is a dynamic exploration at the intersection of visual communication design and societal awareness, seeking to unravel and mitigate the far-reaching impacts of bias. Through the fusion of "Human" and "Kind," the project embodies a dual narrative, emphasizing individual humanity and the diverse fabric of the human collective. The core inquiry revolves around encouraging individuals to recognize and challenge biases before decision-making, fostering unbiased choices. Historical narratives of racial conflicts serve as the foundation, propelling the project's mission to explore, challenge, and diminish biases entrenched in our collective consciousness. Going beyond traditional exhibitions, "HumanKind" evolves into a dynamic dialogue …

Abstract Speech delay is primarily attributed to sensorineural hearing loss, which may significantly impact a child's language development and social independence. Consistent and periodic auditory-verbal therapy as an early intervention has the potential to positively influence language development, thereby fostering …
Global Ethics, Religious Liberty, And Freedom Of Information Access, Paul A. Hartog
Global Ethics, Religious Liberty, And Freedom Of Information Access, Paul A. Hartog
The Christian Librarian
Devout Christians work in a spectrum of library settings (including public libraries), networked by globalized information access. By nature of their employment, these librarians assist patrons in accessing and retrieving information that challenges or conflicts with a biblical worldview. How can one defend taking such an active role in this seeming contradiction? This article maintains that Christian commitment may not only co-exist with the freedom of information access but may also support it as a universal human right in our globalized, pluralistic context. To make the case, the essay contrasts two varying accounts of Global Ethics (differing in their view …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
Cognitive maps are a vital tool that can be used for knowledge representation and reasoning. Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs) are popular soft computing techniques used to model large and complex systems, and they can aid in explainable artificial intelligence (AI). FCMs, however, cannot model the indeterminacy that arises in a system due to various uncertainties. Neutrosophic Cognitive Maps (NCMs), upgraded FCMs that could model indeterminacy, were introduced to address this issue. NCMs are a generalization of FCMs, a field of cognitive science firmly based on neural networks. NCMs have been used to solve a wide range of problems. NCMs were …
Communication Sciences And Disorders Students’ Awareness Of The Deaf Community, Deaf Culture, And American Sign Language, Kenna Reece
Undergraduate Honors Theses
For medical professionals in any field, it is vastly important to be culturally sensitive to one’s clients and patients. The history of audiologists, speech-language pathologists (SLPs), and the Deaf community is complicated and painful, causing distrust towards medical professionals among many Deaf people. There is little research looking into the area of awareness of Deaf culture among practicing audiologists and SLPs. Select studies into this area, that focused on other medical professionals, have shown that many clinicians have had experience with American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf community, but there is still a lack of important knowledge and discomfort …

Perceptual Learning Of Infants Across Domains, Melanie Garcia, Carolina A. Herrera, Ryan K. Perez, Rodica R. Constantine, Erin E. Hannon
Undergraduate Research Symposium Posters
Infancy is a unique developmental period in which there is rapid attunement of perceptual systems to specific environmental properties. Perceptual narrowing: By the end of the first year, infants become adept processors and develop expertise of familiar socially meaningful domains such as faces, language, and music leading to subsequent social and cognitive abilities. The mechanisms driving these perceptual changes remain debated, with contrasting accounts proposing experience-dependent or domain-general influences. Objective: This research aims to investigate whether perceptual narrowing in early development is primarily driven by domain-specific experiences or by domain-general factors such as brain maturation and information processing.

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The concepts of open sets, closed sets, the interior of a set, and the exterior of a set are the most basic concepts in the study of topological spaces in any setting. When we turn our attention to the concept of anti-topological spaces, we encounter analogous fundamental concepts, such as the definition of anti-open sets, anti-closed sets, anti-interior, anti-exterior, etc. These concepts have already been introduced and studied by mathematicians worldwide. In this article, we introduce and study the concepts of b-anti-open set, b-anti-closed set, anti-b-interior, and anti-b-closure in the context of anti-topological spaces and investigate some of their basic …

Finite-state morphological modeling has been used in natural language processing for many years particularly when dealing with lower resource languages. The present study details the development of an open-source finite-state morphological model for the Q'eqchi' Maya language using Helsinki Finite-State Technology (HFST) and the Giellatekno infrastructure. This project represents the first comprehensive morphological analyzer for Q'eqchi' and sets a foundation for future work in data annotation for this language. The resulting transducer consists of 4,439 lexemes, 2,610 states and 9,558 transitions and covers between 75% and 85% of tokens in a Q'eqchi' corpus. The success of this project lays the …
In What Ways Does The Proliferation Of Neoliberal Reform Initiatives (Nclb) Perpetuate The Marginalization Of Students In Urban Inner-City Schools? A Critical Discourse Analysis On Supplemental Education Services (Ses) And Adequate Yearly Progress (Ayp) In Izones Schools Cohorts 1 And 2., Rodney Jarrell Rowan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) has been cited as the pinnacle of the high-stakes accountability movement. NCLB required all students (subgroups) in public education to achieve 100% proficiency in reading and mathematics by 2014 on individual state-mandated standardized tests. The federal government authorized each state the right to define the measures that constituted proficiency (USDOE, 2002, NCLB ACT, Section 1111(2) B). This study revealed how the proliferation of neoliberal reform initiatives perpetuates the marginalization of urban inner-city school students. Under the guise of student subgroups, NCLB labeled students by race and ethnicity, academic status, and social identity. The …
Evaluating Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Social Validity Of Psychological Report Writing Styles, Adam Weseloh
Evaluating Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Social Validity Of Psychological Report Writing Styles, Adam Weseloh
Theses and Dissertations
Psychologists spend a significant portion of their time writing psychological reports. Oftentimes these reports are highly technical and written at a level which the literature has suggested is often difficult for teachers to utilize in their classrooms. Several previous research studies have examined psychological report writing practices and offered suggestions for improvement. One of these suggestions (theme or referral-based report writing) has not been as thoroughly examined in the literature. The purpose of this study was to examine this report writing style compared to more traditional report writing practices. This study utilized a novel approach to assessing teachers’ perceptions of …
Study Of Augmentations On Historical Manuscripts Using Trocr, Erez Meoded
Study Of Augmentations On Historical Manuscripts Using Trocr, Erez Meoded
Theses and Dissertations
Historical manuscripts are an essential source of original content. For many reasons, it is hard to recognize these manuscripts as text. This thesis used a state-of-the-art Handwritten Text Recognizer, TrOCR, to recognize a 16th-century manuscript. TrOCR uses a vision transformer to encode the input images and a language transformer to decode them back to text. We showed that carefully preprocessed images and designed augmentations can improve the performance of TrOCR. We suggest an ensemble of augmented models to achieve an even better performance.
Towards Bias-Resilient Deep Neural Networks, Robik Shrestha
Towards Bias-Resilient Deep Neural Networks, Robik Shrestha
Theses
Deep learning systems have brought about a paradigm shift in the field of artificial intelligence, often surpassing human performance across a wide range of tasks. Nonetheless, there are numerous apprehensions regarding their robustness when deployed in the real world. Multiple studies have demonstrated that deep learning models tend to latch onto biases present in their training data instead of truly solving the tasks. Given the pervasive nature of this issue across various datasets and tasks, researchers have proposed a variety of techniques to improve bias resilience. However, the evaluation protocols used in prior works leave many open questions regarding their …

Thieves And Robbers
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Although there isn't much difference between a thief and a robber in most minds, there was a considerable difference between the two under ancient Near Eastern law. A thief (ganab) was usually a local person who stole from his neighbor. He was dealt with judicially. He was tried and punished civilly, most often by a court composed of his fellow townspeople. A robber, on the other hand, was an outsider, a brigand or highwayman. He was dealt with militarily. These outlaws could be executed summarily.
