Decreasing Surgical Complications In Diabetic Patients, Bandana Mahato
Decreasing Surgical Complications In Diabetic Patients, Bandana Mahato
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
Executive Summary
Objective: This manuscript aims to determine if controlling diabetes prior to undergoing low back surgery could decrease complications and disability.
Contexts: Despite the overwhelming information on the complications of uncontrolled diabetes, patients continue to have elevated HgA1C before having surgery. Furthermore, there is a plethora of data showing uncontrolled diabetic patients will have higher complications after surgery, yet patients continue to have elective surgery despite having unchecked diabetes. There are no clear guidelines for primary care providers or surgeons on when they should allow patients to have elective surgery. Therefore, it is vital that HgA1c needs to be …

Improving Access To Early Interventions For Prediabetic Patients, Kimberleigh M. Telling
Improving Access To Early Interventions For Prediabetic Patients, Kimberleigh M. Telling
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Approximately 88 million Americans, or nearly one-third of the population, have prediabetes. This condition has a high rate of progression to type 2 diabetes, reaching 70%. However, early identification, diagnosis, and participation in lifestyle interventions can effectively reduce the risk and promote euglycemia. Regrettably, 85% of those with prediabetes are unaware. The goal of this quantitative quality improvement project was to enhance the use of the prediabetes diagnosis code by primary care providers, who play a crucial role in preventing type 2 diabetes. The purpose was to improve access to early intervention for individuals with prediabetes, following the guidelines of …

Adaptive Social Distancing Strategies For Controlling Infection Inequality In Emerging Infectious Diseases, Asma Azizi, Caner Kazanci, Sunmi Lee
Faculty Articles
People fare in outbreaks of emerging infections based on social factors shaping their exposure and vulnerability to the virus. This different exposure cause a disproportionate share of prevalence among people with various socioeconomic statuses. Therefore, socioeconomic-based control strategies are needed to control the discrepancy in prevalence among socioeconomic groups. We propose and analyze a SIR mathematical model that is grouped based on individuals' income level (representing socioeconomic status). For the model's parameter, we use properties of a real-world social network of individuals residing in New Orleans, Louisiana. We then distribute the social distancing practice among different groups to minimize a …

Nexavant was reported as an alternative to the TLR3 agonist of Poly(I:C) and its derivatives. The physicochemical properties, signaling pathways, anti-cancer effects, and mechanisms of Nexavant were investigated. The distinctive characteristics of Nexavant compared to that of Poly(I:C) were demonstrated by precise quantification, enhanced thermostability, and increased resistance to RNase A. Unlike Poly(I:C), which activates TLR3, RIG-I, and MDA5, Nexavant stimulates signaling through TLR3 and RIG-I but not through MDA5. Compared to Poly(I:C), an intratumoral Nexavant treatment led to a unique immune response, immune cell infiltration, and suppression of tumor growth in various animal cancer models. Nexavant therapy outperformed anti-PD-1 …

Increased Coding Potential Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Victoria Jefferson
Increased Coding Potential Of Bovine Herpesvirus 1, Victoria Jefferson
Theses and Dissertations
Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) costs the cattle industry millions of dollars in costs in treatment and loss every year in the United States. A significant pathogen often contributes to BRD is Bovine Herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), a double stranded DNA virus with the ability to establish latency in the trigeminal ganglia and neurons. Primary infection with BoHV-1 results in immunosuppression that increases the risk of secondary bacterial infection and pneumonia. Because herpesviruses infect their hosts for life and can be reactivated in times of stress, BoHV-1 can present a recurring risk of BRD. The following research aims to expand the knowledge …

BACKGROUND: The primary pathophysiological process of sepsis is to stimulate a massive release of inflammatory mediators to trigger systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), the major cause of multi-organ dysfunction and death. Like other helminths, Echinococcus granulosus induces host immunomodulation. We sought to determine whether E. granulosus cyst fluid (EgCF) displays a therapeutic effect on sepsis-induced inflammation and tissue damage in a mouse model.
METHODS: The anti-inflammatory effects of EgCF were determined by in vitro culture with bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMDMs) and in vivo treatment of BALB/C mice with cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis. The macrophage phenotypes were determined by …

Development Of Computational And Experimental Approaches For Rna Virus Serology, Brittany Kaye Smith
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Neutralization assays like the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) and focus reduction neutralization test (FRNT) are the most specific ways to measure neutralizing antibodies, which provide a good estimate of protection for RNA viruses. However, these assays are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and low-throughput. Alternative methods that are faster and convenient are necessary to quantify antibody responses in large-scale studies. In this dissertation, I develop a mix of computational and experimental methods to quantify antibody responses to dengue viruses (DENV) and SARS-CoV-2. DENV is the most significant mosquito-borne viral infection in humans. Four serotypes of DENV exist. Traditionally, infection with one serotype …

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is one of the most widely used nonhuman primate models of human disease. Owing to limitations in sequencing technology, early genome assemblies of this species using short-read sequencing suffered from gaps. In addition, the genetic diversity of the species has not yet been adequately explored. Using long-read genome sequencing and expert annotation, we generated a high-quality genome resource creating a 2.898 Gb marmoset genome in which most of the euchromatin portion is assembled contiguously (contig N50 = 25.23 Mbp, scaffold N50 = 98.2 Mbp). We then performed whole genome sequencing on 84 marmosets …
