Kikuchi-Fujimoto Disease In Pregnancy: A Rare Case With Atypical Presentation And Potential Viral Trigger, Nicole Nudelman, Ann K. Valencia, Alex Fernandez, Gustavo A. Hernandez, Jeffrey Valencia Uribe, Brian G. Nudelman
Student Publications
Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD), or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a rare, self-limiting condition characterized by cervical lymphadenopathy, fever, and night sweats. Although KFD is most commonly reported in young Asian women, cases have emerged globally, including among non-Asian populations. The etiology remains unclear, with viral and autoimmune triggers, such as Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), being commonly proposed. Diagnosing KFD is challenging due to its overlapping symptoms with more severe conditions like tuberculosis, malignancies, and autoimmune disorders. Diagnosis typically requires an excisional lymph node biopsy due to the insufficiency of noninvasive methods.
This case report describes a 29-year-old …

Adherence To Evidence-Based Practice In Childhood Immunization: A Mixed-Methods Study, Lydia Boampong Owusu
Adherence To Evidence-Based Practice In Childhood Immunization: A Mixed-Methods Study, Lydia Boampong Owusu
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Immunization is one of the most effective public health measures for preventing infectious diseases in children (Baidya et al., 2024). Immunization safety and effectiveness depends on proper injection site management (Rishovd, 2014; World Health Organization, 2018). Globally, Evidence-Based Practices (EBP) are recommended to enhance immunization effectiveness and minimize unwanted side effects (Cataldi et al., 2020). However, there is a dearth of empirical evidence on healthcare provider adherence to EBP in injection site management which presents a significant knowledge gap, especially in developing countries. This study assessed the experience and understanding of healthcare providers' adherence to EBP in administering childhood vaccines …

The Effects Of Space On Pharmacology And Traditional Medicine: A Review Of Current Literature And Its Potential Impacts On Space Therapeutics, Pratyush Majumdar
Small Satellite Conference
Astronauts in space commonly take medicine for sleep disorders, muscle aches, and other miscellaneous conditions. These medications are taken under the assumption that they will work in space comparable to their effect on Earth, but mounting evidence is emerging to demonstrate that this is not the case. Using the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, there are many physiological changes that alter how a drug is processed, changing their therapeutic effect. As mission times get longer, there is a heavier need to understand these changes and compensate for them in order to keep astronauts safe.

As molecular and cellular technologies have advanced, the need to analyze and interpret the resulting vast and multi-modal data into actionable intelligence has become a rate-limiting factor in scientific advancement. While traditional knowledgebase-pathway tools and LLM-based AI tools provide a degree of support in data interpretation, both exhibit known limitations. Presented here is the CompBio multi-omic analysis platform built upon Memory-based Intelligent Reasoning System (MIRaS), an associative reasoning engine grounded in episodic and semantic memory, capable of inferring biological relationships directly from stored knowledge rather than from model training. The MIRaS system is not dependent on human-curated pathway knowledgebases, provides …
Exploring Foundations Of Animal Host-Microbe Interactions In A Freshwater Sponge, Jacob S. Pawley
Exploring Foundations Of Animal Host-Microbe Interactions In A Freshwater Sponge, Jacob S. Pawley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The most ancient eukaryotic immune defense mechanisms evolved in unicellular species. Multicellular eukaryotes, however, expanded these mechanisms to meet challenges unique to multicellular life, including barrier formation, long-distance cell signaling, and coordinated responses that eliminate microbial threats while minimizing damage to the host. As such, animal immune signaling pathways are exceptionally intricate and diverse. Though, most of what is understood about animal host–microbe interactions stems from a small handful of model systems. Here, I evaluate host–microbe interactions and innate immunity in sponges using the highly tractable freshwater sponge, Ephydatia muelleri. I report the discovery of an external host-derived matrix …

Identification And Characterization Of Novel Immune Modulating Genes In Parkinson's Disease, Kathleen Chaundy Paul Murphy
Identification And Characterization Of Novel Immune Modulating Genes In Parkinson's Disease, Kathleen Chaundy Paul Murphy
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive age-related neurodegenerative disorder characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms. The poorly understood prodromal period, decades-long progression, and disease-phenotype heterogeneity continue to impede the development of preventive and curative therapies. A growing appreciation of immune system changes during the progression of PD suggests that evaluating peripheral immune cells may help identify signatures relevant to disease etiology. We aimed to expand our understanding of the peripheral immune compartment in PD via two lines of investigation: (1) by employing single-cell RNA sequencing to profile the transcriptomes of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from a cohort of …

Necropsy Findings Reveal Potential Threats To Native Florida Chelonian Species, Paige A. Spurlock
OneUSF Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium
Necropsies are vital for providing researchers with more information on the underlying conditions that cause disease and death in wildlife. A standard herpetological necropsy, like any necropsy, requires one to look objectively at each specimen, without preconceived expectations as to the cause, beginning with thorough internal and external examination of organs and tissues. This summer, I conducted 15 Chelonian (turtle and tortoise) necropsies. Species included gopher tortoise (n=11), and seral freshwater turtle species (n=4). Beyond gross examination, I collected cloacal/oral swabs, liver, lung, kidney, spleen, and brain for potential testing. Most were in good condition. We found a range of …

Fusobacterium nucleatum is one of the key bacteria in the oral microbiota, which plays a key role in the structural integrity of dental plaque, an anaerobic bacterium. Emerging clinical evidence has increasingly linked this opportunistic pathogen to severe systemic pathologies, notably colorectal cancer and adverse pregnancy outcomes. This review synthesizes current genomic and molecular insights to elucidate the complex mechanisms driving fusobacterial virulence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We critically discuss the roles of key adhesins, such as FadA and Fap2, in modulating host cell signaling and facilitating immune evasion. Furthermore, we determine the genomic architecture involved in the transfer …
