MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity

In the biosphere, limits for diversity among species, communities, and biomes are revealed through intensive and extensive field-based inventory and assembly of voucher specimens and associated informatics examined in a phylogenetic, historical, ecological, and biogeographic arena. Archival resources for specimens and information contribute to a cumulative view of faunal structure and assembly under a comparative umbrella. Ultimately, species definitions, and inclusive partitions among populations and lineages, are fundamental in articulating hypotheses that examine interactions about evolution, the nature of organisms, and the condition of environments across space and time. We conclude our proposals establishing species limits for tapeworms of the …

Potentially septic patients have a huge clinical and economic impact on hospitals and often present to the emergency department (ED) with undifferentiated symptoms. The triage of these patients is complex and has historically relied heavily upon provider judgment. This study aims to evaluate the consistency of provider judgment and the potential of a new host response sepsis test to aid in the triage process. A modified Delphi study involving 26 participants from multiple specialties was conducted to evaluate provider agreement about sepsis risk and to test proposed actions based on the results of a sepsis test. The participants considered case …

Analyzing The Efficacy Of Covid-19 Travel Bans: A Regression Analysis Approach, Mallory Kochanek Dec 2023

Analyzing The Efficacy Of Covid-19 Travel Bans: A Regression Analysis Approach, Mallory Kochanek

Honors Projects

Some might associate the term ‘public health’ with the pandemic that occurred in 2020. COVID-19 spread like most have never seen in their lifetime. It is useful to look at the effectiveness of the travel re- strictions in mitigating the spread of the global pandemic. Using linear regression and network regression, we obtain parameter estimates to determine the relation of predictors, such as network effect, percentage of urban population and GDP, on the COVID-19 incidence rate for the months January to April of 2020. Linear regression does not ac- count for the correlation structure of the data. Network regression, on …

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens Dec 2023

Sepsis Criteria On Triage (Scot): Sepsis Alert, Kristie Givens

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Sepsis is a serious life-threatening condition that kills hundreds of thousands of patients every year and is a major leading cause of death. Sepsis is a medical emergency where early identification and prompt treatment are crucial for survival. Despite assessment tools for early recognition, a delay in antibiotic therapy remains. A sepsis alert (Code Sepsis) in the emergency department could improve sepsis care, spare countless lives, and save billions of dollars nationwide, annually. The implementation of a Code Sepsis will trigger a team to deliver immediate treatment and ensure one hour antibiotic administration times. The John Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Internal Transcribed Sequences (Its) As Dna Barcodes To Estimate Fungal Diversity, Jailisa Linares

All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations

Universal phylogenetic markers such as the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed sequences (ITS), specifically ITS1 and ITS2, are routinely used to estimate fungal diversity in environmental samples. However, numerous studies report differences in the performance and efficacy of ITS1 and ITS2 in documenting fungal diversity. To better understand the implications of using ITS1 versus ITS2, a comprehensive representation of the diverse fungal taxa was necessary to conduct a meta-analysis of their use across multiple fungal taxa. In order to address this, a thorough literature review was conducted to compare and contrast the use of ITS1 and ITS2 as effective DNA barcodes. …

Infants necessitate vaccinations to prevent life-threatening infections. Our understanding of the infant immune responses to routine vaccines remains limited. We analyzed two cohorts of 2-month-old infants before vaccination, one week, and one-month post-vaccination. We report remarkable hetero- geneity but limited antibody responses to the different antigens. Whole-blood transcriptome analysis in an initial cohort showed marked overexpression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) and to a lesser extent of inflammation- genes at day 7, which normalized one month post-vaccination. Single-cell RNA sequencing in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from a second cohort identified at baseline a predominantly naive immune landscape including ISGhi cells. On …

Raman Spectroscopic Analysis Of Human Serum Samples Of Convalescing Covid-19 Positive Patients, Hugh Byrne, Naomi Jackson, Jaythoon Hassan

Articles

Rapid screening, detection and monitoring of viral infection is of critical importance, as exemplified by the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2, leading to the worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. This is equally the case for the stages of patient convalescence as for the initial stages of infection, to understand the medium and long terms effects, as well as the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Optical spectroscopic techniques potentially offer an alternative to currently employed techniques of screening for the presence, or the response to infection. In this study, the ability of Raman spectroscopy to distinguish between samples of the serum of convalescent COVID-19 …

Exploration Of Agricultural Iot Breeding Tracking Based On A Saliency Visual Targettracking Algorithm, Fuzhi Wang, Changlin Song, Daijun Jiang

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a development trend in modern industry and life. It can not only reduce the cost of industry and agriculture, but also improve the quality of products and the quality of people’s lives. Therefore, IoT breeding is the embodiment of modern intelligent agriculture. For example, in the estrus detection of beef cattle, the quality of video images when tracking beef cattle is reduced due to changes in external climate conditions and the difference between daytime and nighttime illumination. This paper introduces a visual target tracking algorithm based on saliency, so that it has better applicability …

Bingroup2: Statistical Tools For Infection Identification Via Group Testing, Christopher R. Bilder, Brianna D. Hitt, Brad J. Biggerstaff, Joshua M. Tebbs, Christopher S. Mcmahan

Department of Statistics: Faculty Publications

Group testing is the process of testing items as an amalgamation, rather than separately, to determine the binary status for each item. Its use was especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic through testing specimens for SARS-CoV-2. The adoption of group testing for this and many other applications is because members of a negative testing group can be declared negative with potentially only one test. This subsequently leads to significant increases in laboratory testing capacity. Whenever a group testing algorithm is put into practice, it is critical for laboratories to understand the algorithm’s operating characteristics, such as the expected number of …

Candidate Signatures Of Positive Selection For Environmental Adaptation In Indigenous African Cattle: A Review., Sumaya Kambal, Abdulfatai Tijjani, Sabah A E Ibrahim, Mohamed-Khair A Ahmed, Joram M Mwacharo, Olivier Hanotte

Faculty Research 2023

Environmental adaptation traits of indigenous African cattle are increasingly being investigated to respond to the need for sustainable livestock production in the context of unpredictable climatic changes. Several studies have highlighted genomic regions under positive selection probably associated with adaptation to environmental challenges (e.g. heat stress, trypanosomiasis, tick and tick-borne diseases). However, little attention has focused on pinpointing the candidate causative variant(s) controlling the traits. This review compiled information from 22 studies on signatures of positive selection in indigenous African cattle breeds to identify regions under positive selection. We highlight some key candidate genome regions and genes of relevance to …

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the first reported human oncogenic virus and infects more than 95% of the human population worldwide. EBV latent infection in B lymphocytes is essential for viral persistence. Glycoprotein gp42 is an indispensable member of the triggering complex for EBV entry into B cells. The C-type lectin domain (CTLD) of gp42 plays a key role in receptor binding and is the major target of neutralizing antibodies. Here, we isolated two rabbit antibodies, 1A7 and 6G7, targeting gp42 CTLD with potent neutralizing activity against B cell infection. Antibody 6G7 efficiently protects humanized mice from lethal EBV challenge and …
