Horses that perform constant physical activity related to sport or work are subject to musculoskeletal disorders. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of a functional training program to promote physical conditions (epaxial musculature biometry and linear kinematics) and behavior traits in patrol horses. Sixteen crossbred horses were randomly distributed in two experimental treatments: not submitted (control group) and submitted (test group) to a functional exercise program. The training program exercises were performed three times per week for 90 days and consisted of dynamic mobilization techniques, reflexive mobilization, dynamic imbalance, and passive stretching. The studied variables were Longissimus dorsi …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) is a potentially fatal disease of psittacine birds. Avian bornavirus (ABV), the causative agent of PDD, causes inflammation of the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. Clinically, birds affected by PDD present with gastrointestinal tract dysfunction, neurological symptoms, or both. In this study, we evaluated the presence of proventriculus dilation and ABV in 40 birds (cockatiel, n = 12; budgerigar, n = 28), submitted to the veterinary clinic, by radiology and RT-PCR. Lateral and ventrodorsal radiographs and feather samples were taken from 36 live birds including the cockatiel and budgerigar, as well as samples of proventriculus …

Prevalence Of Carriers Of Cholesterol Deficiency–Associated Apob Mutation In Some Native, Holstein And Simmental Cattle Breeds In Türkiye, Hasan Meydan, Kübra Bedi̇r Di̇bi̇ç, Onur Vural, Mehmet Ali̇ Yildiz, Jørgen S. Agerholm Dec 2023

Prevalence Of Carriers Of Cholesterol Deficiency–Associated Apob Mutation In Some Native, Holstein And Simmental Cattle Breeds In Türkiye, Hasan Meydan, Kübra Bedi̇r Di̇bi̇ç, Onur Vural, Mehmet Ali̇ Yildiz, Jørgen S. Agerholm

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Genetic diseases play an increasingly important role in cattle breeding as breeding technologies such as artificial insemination has an inborn risk of disseminating deleterious genes, especially from high merit breeding sires. Cholesterol deficiency (CD) is a metabolic disorder first recognized in Holstein cattle in 2015. The condition is characterized by chronic diarrhea and unthriftiness in calves being homozygous for the defective allele. The prevalence of carriers of CD in Turkish cattle is at present unknown and therefore 700 heifers and cows of different breeds, including 300 Holsteins were genotyped. Of the tested Holsteins, 2.0% turned out to be carriers of …

Addressing The “Whys” Of Uk Children’S Youtube Use: A Purposes Approach, Fiona Scott, Becky Parry, Jackie Marsh, Jamal Lahmar, Beth Nutbrown, Emilie Scholey, Patrizia Baldi, Lily Law, Dylan Yamada-Rice

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Despite the widespread use of YouTube by children, there has been limited research undertaken on the “why” questions of their use. Past theoretical approaches have framed these questions in terms of broader individual needs and their relation to media use, though this work has mainly focused on adults and adolescents. This article presents relevant findings from a mixed methods study of children’s (aged 0–16) uses of social media in the United Kingdom to consider instead the “purposes” of children’s YouTube use, drawing on: (1) an online family survey; (2) family case studies; (3) child focus groups; and (4) child telephone …

Impacts Of Artificial Light At Night On The Early Life History Of Two Ecosystem Engineers, Svenja Tidau, Fraser T. Brough, Luis Gimenez, Stuart R. Jenkins, Thomas W. Davies Dec 2023

Impacts Of Artificial Light At Night On The Early Life History Of Two Ecosystem Engineers, Svenja Tidau, Fraser T. Brough, Luis Gimenez, Stuart R. Jenkins, Thomas W. Davies

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Sessile marine invertebrates play a vital role as ecosystem engineers and in benthic-pelagic coupling. Most benthic fauna develop through larval stages and the importance of natural light cycles for larval biology and ecology is long-established. Natural light-dark cycles regulate two of the largest ocean-scale processes that are fundamental to larvae’s life cycle: the timing of broadcast spawning for successful fertilisation and diel vertical migration for foraging and predator avoidance. Given the reliance on light and the ecological role of larvae, surprisingly little is known about the impacts of artificial light at night (ALAN) on the early life history of habitat-forming …

A Bacille Calmette–Guérin (BCG) is still the only licensed vaccine for the prevention of tuberculosis, providing limited protection against Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in adulthood. New advances in the delivery of DNA vaccines by electroporation have been made in the past decade. We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of the DNA-hsp65 vaccine administered by intramuscular electroporation (EP) in cynomolgus macaques. Animals received three doses of DNA-hsp65 at 30-day intervals. We demonstrated that intramuscular electroporated DNA-hsp65 vaccine immunization of cynomolgus macaques was safe, and there were no vaccine-related effects on hematological, renal, or hepatic profiles, compared to the pre-vaccination parameters. No tuberculin …

Engineering E. Coli Strains Using Antibiotic-Resistance-Gene-Free Plasmids, Matthew B Amrofell, Sunaina Rengarajan, Steven T Vo, Erick S Ramirez Tovar, Larissa Lobello, Gautam Dantas, Tae Seok Moon

2020-Current year OA Pubs

We created a generalizable pipeline for antibiotic-resistance-gene-free plasmid (ARGFP)-based cloning using a dual auxotrophic- and essential-gene-based selection strategy. We use auxotrophic selection to construct plasmids in engineered E. coli DH10B cloning strains and both auxotrophic- and essential-gene-based selection to (1) select for recombinant strains and (2) maintain a plasmid in E. coli Nissle 1917, a common chassis for engineered probiotic applications, and E. coli MG1655, the laboratory "wild-type" E. coli strain. We show that our approach has comparable efficiency to that of antibiotic-resistance-gene-based cloning. We also show that the double-knockout Nissle and MG1655 strains are simple to transform with plasmids …

Challenges And Opportunities In Insulin Resistance-Induced Cognitive Dysfunction, Nancy Abdel-Kareem, Shimaa Elshazly, May Galal, Enas Ahmed Abd El-Haleim

Bulletin of Faculty of Pharmacy Cairo University

In the last few years, there has been a lot of interest in the effect of nutrition on cognitive function, as it affects insulin signals inside the body, whose role is not limited to controlling blood glucose levels but also extends to the learning process and cognitive function. Nutrition-induced insulin resistance is one of the present diseases, which impairs brain insulin signaling and leads to various forms of dementia. This review discusses the different roles of insulin inside the body, the negative effect of insulin resistance on brain function, and the use of some drugs that may improve cognitive dysfunction.

The Role Of Local Agency In Peacebuilding: The Case Of The Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, Gamel M. A. Aganah Phd Dec 2023

The Role Of Local Agency In Peacebuilding: The Case Of The Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee, Gamel M. A. Aganah Phd

Peace and Conflict Studies

This article explores the failure of top-level interventions in the resolution of local conflicts and the role of local agency in peacebuilding. The article relied primarily on qualitative techniques and instruments to collect data to examine why top-level interventions by successive governments have failed to resolve the Bawku chieftaincy conflict. The article finds that top-level interventions have failed to resolve the conflict because they are introduced with little to no participation by local communities. These interventions are, therefore, unable to garner grassroot support and commitment. In contrast, the BIEPC led peace process has been more successful in the management of …

Cross-Seasonal Effects In A Sea Ice-Associated Sea Duck: Do Winter Conditions Affect Breeding Spectacled Eiders?, Randall J. Friendly Dec 2023

Cross-Seasonal Effects In A Sea Ice-Associated Sea Duck: Do Winter Conditions Affect Breeding Spectacled Eiders?, Randall J. Friendly

Biological Sciences

Climate change in the Arctic is more rapid than anywhere on the globe and changes in the marine environment can impact the distribution and abundance of Arctic and sub-Arctic species. Understanding how a species responds to climate change can aid conservation planning and recovery. Spectacled eiders (Somateria fischeri), sea ducks listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act, winter at the Bering Sea and nest along the coastal areas of Alaska and Arctic Russia. Severity of winter conditions in the Bering Sea have been associated with both reduced annual survival and reduced breeding abundance and may have sublethal effects during …

Indigenous Self-Determination In Co-Production Of Knowledge, Margaret Hope Rudolf Dec 2023

Indigenous Self-Determination In Co-Production Of Knowledge, Margaret Hope Rudolf

Anthropology

Analyzing and comprehending co-production of knowledge (CPK) in the context of working with Arctic Indigenous communities on climate change research is the main goal for this interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation. CPK is shared decision-making on every step of the research process with research partners from communities, agencies, or organizations. CPK with Arctic Indigenous communities requires dedicated consideration of equity, ethics, cultural worldviews, and colonization. Key concepts from Indigenous critical methodologies are used to analyze both the CPK theory and implementation. CPK has the potential to be an ethical space to question the status quo of research processes and support Indigenous self-determination. …

Uncovering Patterns And Mechanisms Of Paralytic Shellfish Toxicity In Alaska's Geoduck Clam Fishery, Courtney E. Hart Dec 2023

Uncovering Patterns And Mechanisms Of Paralytic Shellfish Toxicity In Alaska's Geoduck Clam Fishery, Courtney E. Hart

Fisheries

This dissertation explores the patterns and mechanisms of paralytic shellfish toxicity in commercially harvested geoduck clams caused by the toxin-producing dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella in Southeast Alaska. Alaska's commercial fishery for geoduck clams (Panopea generosa) is a small but lucrative fishery, with annual ex-vessel values averaging US $3.9 million (2010-2022). In recent years, the presence of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) in clam tissue resulted in declines in fishery openings and harvest. PSTs can bioaccumulate in the tissues of filter feeders when A. catenella blooms in the spring and summer seasons. However, high levels of toxicity in geoduck clams occur sporadically during …

Environmental And Biotic Habitat Attributes Affect Rocky Intertidal Community Variability In Glacially Influenced Estuaries, Madeleine G. Mcarthur Dec 2023

Environmental And Biotic Habitat Attributes Affect Rocky Intertidal Community Variability In Glacially Influenced Estuaries, Madeleine G. Mcarthur

Marine Biology

Climate change is increasing the rate of glacial recession in high latitude coastal environments. The associated increase in cold, sediment-laden freshwater into the nearshore may alter a wide array of water attributes, which will likely have ecosystem-wide impacts. One of these potential impacts is a change in typical levels of ecological community variability, which can be an indicator of stress in response to an environmental impact. Fluctuation in community composition over time is natural and can be affected by environmental conditions, as well as by the presence of habitat forming, spatially dominant organisms. The goal of this study was to …

Eavesdropping On Killer Whales: Distribution, Calling Rates, And Acoustic Abundance Of Fish-Eating And Mammal-Eating Killer Whales In The Gulf Of Alaska, Hannah J. Myers Dec 2023

Eavesdropping On Killer Whales: Distribution, Calling Rates, And Acoustic Abundance Of Fish-Eating And Mammal-Eating Killer Whales In The Gulf Of Alaska, Hannah J. Myers

Marine Biology

The widespread loss of apex consumers in marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems throughout the world has precipitated profound trophic cascades and switches to different ecological states. However, conserving top predators can deliver broad biodiversity benefits and improve ecosystem resiliency. Effective conservation and management policy is predicated on a species' distribution and abundance in a given area and time. In this dissertation, I provide new insight into killer whale (Orcinus orca) distribution, vocal behavior, and abundance in the Gulf of Alaska using passive acoustic monitoring and advance long-term monitoring capacity for this species. First, I describe the year-round spatiotemporal distribution and …

Marine Methane: Sources And Potential Adverse Effects, Sadia Mahmuda Dec 2023

Marine Methane: Sources And Potential Adverse Effects, Sadia Mahmuda

Engineering

Recently, there has been an increase in the occurrence of incidents involving spills of oil and natural gas, such as methane. The world experiences at least one major spill in each decade. An illustrative case is the Deepwater Horizon oil disaster in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico. This catastrophe resulted in the discharge of about 205.8 million gallons of oil and 225,000 metric tons of methane gas into the Gulf of Mexico. More recently, in 2022, the Nord Stream pipeline leak occurred, which was the largest single methane release ever recorded. It released up to 500K tons of methane …

Movement Ecology, Survival, And Territorial Dynamics In Canada Lynx (Lynx Canadensis) Over A Cyclic Population Decline, Derek Arnold Dec 2023

Movement Ecology, Survival, And Territorial Dynamics In Canada Lynx (Lynx Canadensis) Over A Cyclic Population Decline, Derek Arnold

Biological Sciences

As the quintessential predator-prey cycle, research into Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) and snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus) have led to many discoveries in population biology; however, much remains unknown about the nuances of their populations. In this dissertation, I examined the ways in which population cycles influence survival, reproduction, territoriality, and connectivity. First, I examined ways in which climate change induced shifts in fire regimes have affected lynx persistence in their current refugia. Lynx mainly sought out areas of higher hare density and lower cover, such as intermediately aged coniferous and deciduous forests. This type of forest was predicted to persist …

Effects Of Browser Exclusion On The Willow Leafblotch Miner (Micrurapteryx Salicifoliella): Host Plant Availability, Oviposition, And Survival, Martha M. Cummings Dec 2023

Effects Of Browser Exclusion On The Willow Leafblotch Miner (Micrurapteryx Salicifoliella): Host Plant Availability, Oviposition, And Survival, Martha M. Cummings

Biological Sciences

Herbivores can affect the quality and quantity of their food plants in ways that indirectly influence the food resources and habitat available to other herbivores present. This study examined indirect interactions between a mammalian browser and an insect folivore that feed on shared plant species during different seasons. On a boreal floodplain in interior Alaska, we investigated how a history of winter browsing by moose (Alces alces) affected the behavior and performance of the willow leafblotch miner moth, Micrurapteryx salicifoliella in summer. Excluding moose browsing for 8 years did not change plant density, but strongly increased canopy height, vegetative cover …

Microplastics In Spotted Seal Stomachs From The Bering And Chukchi Seas In 2012 And 2020, Alexandria Sletten Dec 2023

Microplastics In Spotted Seal Stomachs From The Bering And Chukchi Seas In 2012 And 2020, Alexandria Sletten

Biological Sciences

Microplastics pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems across multiple trophic levels. Spotted seals (Phoca largha) are piscivorous and occupy one of the higher trophic positions in the Bering and Chukchi seas, putting them at risk of ingesting microplastics through prey. This project aimed to determine if microplastics are present in the stomachs of spotted seals harvested for subsistence purposes and compare their presence spatially between two harvest locations, Gambell and Shishmaref, AK. Microplastics are predicted to increase in the Arctic over time due to climate warming and subsequent deposition of microplastics from melting sea ice. Therefore, we examined stomachs …

The Effect Of Cold Exposure And Activity On Skeletal Muscle Physiology: A Study Of Human And Animal Models, Michelle M. Johannsen Dec 2023

The Effect Of Cold Exposure And Activity On Skeletal Muscle Physiology: A Study Of Human And Animal Models, Michelle M. Johannsen

Biological Sciences

Environmental factors and physical activity have the potential to modulate skeletal muscle physiology in beneficial ways. Cold exposure and endurance exercise, specifically, may improve aerobic capacity and atrophy resistance. I utilized three models to examine the effect of cold exposure and activity level on skeletal muscle physiology: quantitation of body composition and energy expenditure estimates in humans participating in a transmountain race, comparative proteomic analysis of skeletal muscle in hibernating and summer active American black bears (Ursus americanus), and an experimental study of the combined effects of cold exposure and endurance training on white adipose tissue, and gastrocnemius and soleus …

Smoke Without Fire: Wildfire Smoke Affects Phenolic Composition Of Wild Blueberry Fruits (Vaccinium Uliginosum), Laura G. Weingartner Dec 2023

Smoke Without Fire: Wildfire Smoke Affects Phenolic Composition Of Wild Blueberry Fruits (Vaccinium Uliginosum), Laura G. Weingartner

Biological Sciences

Wildfire smoke can induce changes in plant growth, phenology, and chemical composition. The frequency and intensity of wildfires have increased over the last thirty years in Alaska, and smoke has the potential to affect important wild fruit plants, such as bog blueberry (Vaccinium uliginosum L.), a food source for many Alaskans and wild animals. We exposed bog blueberry plants to wood smoke at different stages in fruit development: early-season when the plants were flowering ("early-smoked"), mid-season when fruits were unripe ("mid-smoked"), and late-season when fruits were fully ripe ("late-smoked"). We measured anthocyanins, proanthocyanidins, and total phenolics in the ripe fruits, …

Effects Of Desformylflustrabromine On Compulsive-Like And Social Behaviors In Mouse Models Of Ocd And Autism, Isaac Van Flein Dec 2023

Effects Of Desformylflustrabromine On Compulsive-Like And Social Behaviors In Mouse Models Of Ocd And Autism, Isaac Van Flein

Biological Sciences

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) share a number of similar deficits, including altered cholinergic activity in the central nervous system (CNS), manifestation of repetitive, restricted, and compulsive-like patterns of behavior, and frequent co-morbid presentation. Desformylflustrabromine is a novel positive allosteric modulator of α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, which has recently been shown to be able to reduce compulsive-like behavior in a non-induced mouse model of OCD. In this study, I attempted to replicate the compulsive-like behavior-reducing effects of desformylflustrabromine in the mouse model of OCD, as well as expose the model to a novel assessment; social behavior, as …

The Role Of Apex Predators, Habitat, And Seascape Complexity On Nearshore Fish Assemblages In Southeast, Alaska, Lia K. Domke Dec 2023

The Role Of Apex Predators, Habitat, And Seascape Complexity On Nearshore Fish Assemblages In Southeast, Alaska, Lia K. Domke

Fisheries

Nearshore marine ecosystems contain dynamic and complex submerged vegetated habitats that offer shelter and prey for juvenile, migratory, and residential species, including many commercial, subsistence, and recreationally important species. The efficacy of the nursery role, shelter, and source of prey of the nearshore is influenced by various abiotic and biotic forces and in this dissertation, we examine the influence of submerged vegetation type, presence of apex predators, and the seascape context on patterns of nearshore fish assemblages in southern Southeast Alaska. We found species-specific responses by juvenile salmon in the nearshore, with seasonality overwhelmingly driving juvenile salmon abundance in eelgrass …

When Beavers Get Burned, Do Fish Get Fried? The Role Of Beavers To Mediate Wildfire Effects On Arctic Grayling In Boreal Alaska, William T. Samuel Dec 2023

When Beavers Get Burned, Do Fish Get Fried? The Role Of Beavers To Mediate Wildfire Effects On Arctic Grayling In Boreal Alaska, William T. Samuel

Fisheries

Wildfire is a dominant natural disturbance process throughout boreal North America and fires are increasing in size, frequency, and severity. However, little is known about how wildfire affects boreal fish populations and aquatic habitat despite the substantial impacts of fire on ecosystem processes, and even less is known about how fire effects are mediated by species interactions. For example, North American Beavers (Castor canadensis) are affected by and can influence wildfire dynamics, and their engineering has complex effects on aquatic habitats. North American Beavers therefore have the potential to mediate wildfire effects on aquatic ecosystems and fish populations. Here I …

Relative Abundance And Movement Ecology Of Tiger Sharks Galeocerdo Cuvier In The Waters Surrounding Bimini, The Bahamas, Matthew J. Smukall Dec 2023

Relative Abundance And Movement Ecology Of Tiger Sharks Galeocerdo Cuvier In The Waters Surrounding Bimini, The Bahamas, Matthew J. Smukall

Fisheries

Shark populations are under increased anthropogenic pressures around the world. Large-bodied shark species are upper trophic level predators, and therefore there is concern that declining numbers of sharks may have significant implications for ecosystems. In response to these conservation concerns there has been increased focus on the implementation of regulations, fishery management plans, national plans of action, and marine management zones in some nations. However, large sharks are often highly mobile and can move readily across jurisdictional boundaries. Therefore, there is a need to monitor long-term relative abundances within regions and simultaneously examine the duration to which species remain in …
