Effects Of Antiresorptive Medications On Tooth Root Formation And Tooth Eruption In Paediatric Patients, Yuki Arai, Jeryl D English, Noriaki Ono, Wanida Ono

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Tooth eruption is a pivotal milestone for children's growth and development. This process involves with the formation of the tooth root, the periodontal ligament (PDL) and the alveolar bone, as the tooth crown penetrates the bone and gingiva to enter the oral cavity. This review aims to outline current knowledge of the adverse dental effects of antiresorptive medications. Recently, paediatric indications for antiresorptive medications, such as bisphosphonates (BPs), have emerged, and these agents are increasingly used in children and adolescents to cure pathological bone resorption associated with bone diseases and cancers. Since tooth eruption is accompanied by osteoclastic bone resorption, …

“And I’M Going To Destroy You.”: Persona And Gender Performativity In Ernest Hemingway’S The Garden Of Eden, Nicole Minton Dec 2023

“And I’M Going To Destroy You.”: Persona And Gender Performativity In Ernest Hemingway’S The Garden Of Eden, Nicole Minton

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

While debate of Ernest Hemingway’s authorial masculine persona in connection to The Garden of Eden has been a point of interest in literary scholarship, no single work has tied together theory of gender performativity to persona. A borderline parodic display of masculine adventure has encouraged a one-dimensional view of Hemingway, who is viewed by audiences as the pinnacle of masculinity. However, this image is complicated by the publication of Eden, which reveals an author interested in gender and sexual identity fluidity. Rarely has a single text called into question so controversially an author’s public image. Eden showcases an empathetic …

The Role Of Tcr Engagement Strength In Antitumor Cd8 T Cell Exhaustion, Xin Lan Dec 2023

The Role Of Tcr Engagement Strength In Antitumor Cd8 T Cell Exhaustion, Xin Lan

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Durability of an antitumor immune response is mediated in part by the persistence of progenitor exhausted CD8 T cells (Tpex). Tpex serve as a source for the pool of effector T cells that tend to have a short lifespan or eventually become dysfunctional in uncleared tumors. In contrast to the short-lived feature of their daughter cells, Tpex are able to preserve their quantity and developmental potential through a process of self-renewal. Previous research has demonstrated that Tpex can even self-renew in the absence of their cognate antigen. However, it remains unknown how T cell receptor (TCR) engagement impacts the self-renewal …

Understanding The Host Cellular Response To Astrovirus Infection, Theresa Mary Taggart Bub Dec 2023

Understanding The Host Cellular Response To Astrovirus Infection, Theresa Mary Taggart Bub

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Astrovirus is a non-enveloped positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus that infects the small intestine and causes gastrointestinal disease in most hosts. However, in immunocompromised patients, astrovirus can infect the brain, causing encephalitis and death. Here, we characterize astrovirus induction of replication organelles and dysregulation of cellular processes. It is known that autophagy can play a key role in the viral lifecycle, from entry to egress, and can be either pro-virus or pro-host depending on the virus. RNA viruses often exploit autophagy machinery to create double membrane vesicles (DMVs) as sites of replication and to protect viral RNAs from detection by innate …

Expanding Recognition And Inclusion Of Animal-Free Organic Agriculture In The Sustainable Agriculture Movement, Mona Seymour

Urban and Environmental Studies Faculty Works

Animal-free organic agriculture resides at the margins of sustainable agriculture discourse, practice, and imaginaries, which center animal-based forms of farming. However, the concerns and goals of sustainable agriculture are overwhelmingly consistent with those of many forms of animal-free organic agriculture (AFOA), described as organic farming sans animal production, labor, and byproducts. Despite this sidelining, AFOA has great potential to contribute to a more robust sustainable agriculture movement. In order to emphasize the continuities between animal-based and animal-free sustainable agriculture, this Perspective identifies a number of key similarities between animal-free and animal-based sustainable farming, including mutual foci on soil health and …

Psychology

Widely used rodent anxiety assays like the elevated plus maze (EPM) and the open field test (OFT) are conflated with rodents' natural preference for dark over light environments or protected over open spaces. The EPM and OFT have been used for decades but are often criticized by behavioral scientists. Years ago, two revised anxiety assays were designed to improve upon the “classic” tests by excluding the possibility to avoid or escape aversion. The 3-D radial arm maze (3DR) and the 3-D open field test (3Doft) utilize continual motivational conflict to better model anxiety; each consist of an open space connected …
