In Vivo Chemiluminescent Probes For Near-Infrared, Copper, And Nitric Oxide Imaging, Rokia Osman

Chemistry Theses and Dissertations

Optical in vivo imaging is a key way to understand complicated intracellular mechanisms and supporting the development of disease therapies by elucidating the main causes of the pathology. Chemiluminescence is an emerging imaging modality that offers increased sensitivity and deep in vivo imaging.

The work in this thesis is based on modulation to phenoxy dioxetane structures to further in vivo imaging. First, we developed a turn-on chemiluminescent copper probe which was designed by linking a picolinic acid moiety to the phenolic substituent of a spiroadamantane 1,2-dioxetane. The sensitive limit of detection of 360 nM allows for tracking copper reactivity in …

Exploring Immune Priming In The Species Exaiptasia Diaphana, Torrence Campos

Biology Theses

Vibrio coralliilyticus is a pathogen that infects various coral species across several reef ecosystems and causes mortality within a span of a few days. With increasing temperatures, the pathogen becomes more virulent towards coral. Probiotics such as MCH1-7 have previously been used to treat infected corals before and after exposure to V. coralliilyticus. In this study, we will be using a species of sea anemone Exaiptasia diaphana in place of coral to evaluate the effects of two V. coralliilyticus strains ATCC BAA-450 and OFT6-21. It was determined that BAA-450 was more virulent. It led to immediate stress and higher mortality. …

This article finds that (1) Amazon and Walmart have the technical capability to detect and flag “Made in USA” fraud; (2) “Made in USA” fraud appears to be common on both Amazon and Walmart; (3) Amazon …

Shopping Mall Revitalization As Experiential Transformation: A Mixed-Method Case Study Of Mall Atmosphere And Visitor Experience, Adeanna P. Pertiwi, Antony Sihombing Jul 2026

Shopping Mall Revitalization As Experiential Transformation: A Mixed-Method Case Study Of Mall Atmosphere And Visitor Experience, Adeanna P. Pertiwi, Antony Sihombing

CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development

Shopping malls are under growing pressure to stay relevant as e-commerce reshapes consumer behaviour and reduces foot traffic in physical retail environments. Although revitalization has become a common response, most studies evaluate it through physical outcomes alone, and the question of how spatial and atmospheric changes translate into shifts in visitor experience remains largely unaddressed. This study examined shopping mall revitalization as an experiential transformation, with the aim of understanding how physical and atmospheric changes shaped visitor experience at Lippo Mall Nusantara, South Jakarta. A mixed-method approach was used. The approach combined direct observation and photographic documentation with a questionnaire …

Nebraska And The Midwest Agtech Ecosystem: Benchmarking Innovation Investment And Translation Gaps, Ankit Chandra, Ishani Lal, Brennan Costello Jul 2026

Nebraska And The Midwest Agtech Ecosystem: Benchmarking Innovation Investment And Translation Gaps, Ankit Chandra, Ishani Lal, Brennan Costello

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

Agricultural innovation is central to the sustainable transformation of food systems, yet the capital that finances it is unevenly distributed relative to where food is produced. This paper develops a diagnostic framework for measuring this mismatch and applies it across the U.S. Midwest from 2021 to 2025, with particular emphasis on Nebraska's structural position within this landscape. Drawing on venture capital deal-flow data, 17 stakeholder interviews, and a novel strength-weakness-opportunity-gap (SWOG) ecosystem mapping methodology, we document $736 million in tracked Midwest AgTech funding across eight states (Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota). We introduce three …

Reconciling Faith And Academic Identity: Evangelical Christian Identity And Ontological Confusion In Sport Studies, Sean Burke Jul 2026

Reconciling Faith And Academic Identity: Evangelical Christian Identity And Ontological Confusion In Sport Studies, Sean Burke

Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies

This paper investigates the interplay of ontological confusion and Evangelical Christian identity within the context of qualitative sport studies research. Employing a reflexive autoethnographic method, I explore my personal experiences as an Evangelical Christian and as a social scientist who grapples with the complexities of paradigmatic confusion. Personal vignettes highlight the influence of sporting spaces and figures such as Tim Tebow and Kurt Warner in shaping my faith, identity, and framework for understanding reality. The analysis delves into the challenges posed by competing paradigmatic orientations, including positivism and social constructivism. These paradigms reveal the inherent difficulty of aligning scholarly inquiry …

Man, Cut The Crop: Effects Of Cropectomies On Survival And Behavior In Drosophila Melanogaster, Emily Peraza Jul 2026

Man, Cut The Crop: Effects Of Cropectomies On Survival And Behavior In Drosophila Melanogaster, Emily Peraza

Florida Atlantic Undergraduate Research Journal

The gut-brain axis mediates communication between the digestive and nervous systems to regulate physiology and behavior. Its dysfunction profoundly impacts human health and causes disease. Region-specific hormones and neurotransmitters in the digestive system respond to several processes to signal the brain, but the mechanisms of gut-brain signaling are not fully defined. Drosophila melanogaster is a powerful model for studying gut biology by showing remarkable similarity to mammalian digestive systems, as both regulate energy by distributing nutrients. We refined a minimally invasive surgical protocol to remove the crop from adult flies. We then utilized the Activity Recording CAFE (ARC) and Drosophila …

Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow Jul 2026

Behavioral Health Referral Patterns Of Medical Providers, Olivia Grace Glasgow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Collaboration between medical and behavioral health providers has been growing consistently through the years. Offering behavioral health services in a medical setting helps individuals who may not otherwise seek mental health care. Much of the available literature focuses on patient characteristics in referral patterns; however, current evidence does not provide much guidance for medical providers to improve their collaboration with behavioral health providers. The present study assessed referral patterns of medical providers serving patients with different presenting problems and with patients who have received prior prescriptions of psychotropic medications. Medical providers were randomly assigned to view four 1-min videos of …

Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Md Tahmeed Hossain Jul 2026

Essays In Applied Microeconomics, Md Tahmeed Hossain

Economics Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation contributes to empirical economics research by examining three settings in which historical shocks, behavioral constraints, and localized public events affect social relations, decision quality, and public safety. The first chapter examines the persistence of historical religious conflict in contemporary Hindu–Muslim relations in India. The second chapter studies how time pressure affects decision quality in online chess. The third chapter analyzes the localized traffic-safety externalities of NFL game days. Across these settings, the dissertation uses large-scale data and quasi-experimental research designs to distinguish causal effects from selection, spatial concentration, and persistent local conditions.

The first chapter asks whether historical …

Analyses were collected from cores across the Illinois Basin, Cincinnati Arch, and Appalachian Basin to support regional evaluation of elemental variability, chemostratigraphy, and redox-sensitive trace-metal enrichment in Devonian–Mississippian mudstone successions. All measurements were conducted using a Bruker Tracer 5 pXRF analyzer with the factory “Mudrock Air” calibration, using analytical settings optimized for both low-atomic-number elements and transition metals/redox-sensitive trace elements. Reference materials SARM-41 and SGR-1 were analyzed throughout the analytical sequence to monitor instrument …

Evaluating Acoustic Deterrents For Reducing Migratory Bird Collisions With Buildings, Jenna Brewer, Shane Oberloier, Annette Prince, David B. Stone, Jared Wolfe Jul 2026

Evaluating Acoustic Deterrents For Reducing Migratory Bird Collisions With Buildings, Jenna Brewer, Shane Oberloier, Annette Prince, David B. Stone, Jared Wolfe

Michigan Tech Publications

Migratory songbird populations are declining across North America, and collisions with glass-fronted buildings have become one of their leading causes of mortality. Finding practical ways to curb these collisions is a key conservation priority, but large-scale solutions remain elusive because retrofitting glass façades and enforcing lights-out policies are often prohibitively costly and logistically difficult. In this study, we focused on developing low-cost alternative deterrents that redirect migrants away from high-risk areas. We tested two acoustic deterrents: a broadband synthetic signal designed to mask nocturnal flight calls, which are important social cues for migrants, and a “predator” track featuring alarm calls …

Herbaceous Plants In Forest Ecosystems: One Hundred Fundamental And Applied Questions, Harikrishnan Venugopalan Nair Radhamoni, Michelle Elise Spicer, Marlyse C. Duguid, Liza S. Comita, Emilio Bruna, Andrew J. Andrade, Julia I. Burton

Michigan Tech Publications

Aims: Herbaceous plants (herbs) found in the understory of forests contribute substantially to the biodiversity of these ecosystems, as well as being important socio-culturally, economically, and for advancing ecological theory. However, the ecology of herbs is less well understood compared with woody plants, despite evidence that herbs are physiologically and ecologically different. Similarly, herb research has focused on north temperate forests, with less information from forests in the tropics and Global South. Understanding this knowledge gap, and recognizing the critical importance of expanding and streamlining the scope of research on forest herbs, we set out to identify 100 fundamental and …

The Interwoven Dynamics Of Climate, Fire, Resilience And Orangutan Survival In Central Kalimantan’S Peat Swamp Forest, Putu Pujiantari Jul 2026

The Interwoven Dynamics Of Climate, Fire, Resilience And Orangutan Survival In Central Kalimantan’S Peat Swamp Forest, Putu Pujiantari

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tropical peat swamp forests are globally significant carbon reservoirs and biodiversity strongholds, yet they face escalating threats from climate change, fire, and anthropogenic disturbances. This dissertation investigates the interwoven dynamics of climate, fire, forest resilience, and orangutan survival in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, a region which was transformed by the failed Mega Rice Project and recurrent catastrophic wildfires for decades. Using a multi-scale approach that integrates remote sensing time-series analysis (2001–2024),nlandscape-scale disturbance mapping (2005–2025), and fine-scale movement ecology, this research tests three core hypotheses: (1) moisture availability is the dominant climatic driver of wildfire activity, operating through non-linear thresholds; (2) post-fire …

Desert Desires And The War On Terror: Pre- And Post-9/11 Sheikh Romances, Leena Altamimi

Book Publishing Final Research Papers

The existence of sheikh romances as a subgenre has prevailed for well over a century in Western literature. Therefore, would one be able to discern whether the book cover imagery as well as the textual content showcases any tangible differences pre and post 9/11, and America’s “war on terror” campaign? A total of five books are observed: The Sheik by E.M. Hull published in 1919, Sarah Holland’s Desert Destiny published in 1991, Loreth Anne White’s The Sheik Who Loved Me and Penny Jordan’s Possessed by the Sheikh (both published in 2005), and lastly Crowned for the Sheikh’s Baby by Sharon …

Visual Structure, Cultural Memory, And Viewership In Early Medieval Irish High Crosses, Trinity Smith Jul 2026

Visual Structure, Cultural Memory, And Viewership In Early Medieval Irish High Crosses, Trinity Smith

Theses

This thesis examines how Irish high crosses functioned as structured visual forms through which religious authority and cultural memory were communicated within early medieval Ireland. Previous scholarship has emphasized the theological coherence of these monuments, often assuming a single idealized viewer. This study reconsiders Irish high crosses through the concept of multiple viewership by examining how different audiences may have encountered and understood these monuments. Using comparative visual and contextual analysis, this study examines four case studies: the Cross of the Scriptures at Clonmacnoise, Muiredach’s Cross at Monasterboice, the High Cross of Durrow, and the Market Cross at Kells. This …

The Significance Of Abstract Art In Self-Expression: A Study Developed By Analyzing Kandinsky's Black Lines And Producing Visual Juxtapositions, Keturah K. Bowles Jul 2026

The Significance Of Abstract Art In Self-Expression: A Study Developed By Analyzing Kandinsky's Black Lines And Producing Visual Juxtapositions, Keturah K. Bowles

Theses

This paper will contemplate how the creation of abstract art, a creative style born from the Avant-Garde movement of the 20th century by artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, was imperative in the pursuit of artistic freedom. Additionally, it will seek to prove that abstraction is one of the unparalleled genres to utilize for self-expression in comparison to genres that uphold traditional art techniques, such as realism. This theory is further emphasized when considering abstract art in juxtaposition to the art standards maintained by the academy. Moreover, the research conducted to support the proposed theory falls into various categories, such as …

Assessing Vertebrate Biodiversity In An Agricultural And Urban Impacted River Using Environmental Dna Metabarcoding, Surabhi Nair

AES Theses

Rivers are dynamic freshwater systems that can experience shifts in flood regime that are driven by anthropogenic activity and climate change. These changes may no longer support the native species in the ecosystem and can favor invasive generalist species. The Pajaro River supports a range of urban, agricultural, and natural habitats and is prone to seasonal flooding that can affect habitat conditions and biodiversity. Current vertebrate diversity in the Pajaro River is not well understood, although traditional surveys have documented both rare and invasive species. Environmental DNA, or eDNA, can help address gaps in traditional monitoring by detecting elusive or …

Reimagining International Investment Law For The Age Of Minerals, Taylor Nchako Jul 2026

Reimagining International Investment Law For The Age Of Minerals, Taylor Nchako

Washington and Lee Law Review

New technologies––from artificial intelligence (AI) and electric vehicles to medical devices and consumer electronics––demand an ever-increasing amount of minerals like lithium, cobalt, and copper. The United States requires these aptly named “critical” minerals to develop AI infrastructure, advance the clean energy transition, and remain economically competitive. As technology continues to advance at an astonishing pace, the U.S. has grown increasingly interested in securing critical minerals from sources in Africa. To obtain critical minerals, the U.S. must utilize investment treaties in its business dealings with African countries. At the same time, international investment law has garnered increased attention due to a …

Fur, Feathers, And Frameworks: The Federal Legal Landscape Of Animal Welfare In The United States And Switzerland, Michael Melch Jul 2026

Fur, Feathers, And Frameworks: The Federal Legal Landscape Of Animal Welfare In The United States And Switzerland, Michael Melch

Washington and Lee Law Review

The United States relies on a predominantly utilitarian, welfarist framework that regulates certain uses of animals while preserving their status as property. Switzerland embeds the concept of animal dignity in its constitutional and statutory law, formally recognizing animals as beings with intrinsic worth. This foundational divergence produces significant doctrinal and practical differences, including the breadth of species covered, the structure of legal obligations, and the normative goals of regulation.

This Note provides a comparative analysis of animal welfare laws in the United States and Switzerland, exploring their philosophical, legal, and practical dimensions. It examines the U.S.’s utilitarian approach, exemplified by …

Enhancing Virtual Reality Cockpit Procedure Training With Haptic Feedback, Christian K. Jaedicke Jul 2026

Enhancing Virtual Reality Cockpit Procedure Training With Haptic Feedback, Christian K. Jaedicke

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Pilot training is time-consuming and costly, and not all phases require full-flight simulators or actual aircraft. Virtual reality (VR) offers a potential means to reduce cost and duration while supporting practical cockpit procedure training. While prior research in the VR domain suggests that providing haptic feedback can support training of muscular control and increase perceived immersion, it remains unclear whether haptic feedback improves spatial cognition in an unfamiliar VR environment. This study examined whether haptic feedback and cockpit complexity affected response time and position error under limited-visibility, time-constrained conditions in a VR cockpit environment (i.e., a quasi-blindfold cockpit check).

Grounded …
