Motor Speed Does Not Impact The Drift Rate: A Computational Hddm Approach To Differentiate Cognitive And Motor Speed, Joshua Sandry, Timothy J. Ricker Dec 2022

Motor Speed Does Not Impact The Drift Rate: A Computational Hddm Approach To Differentiate Cognitive And Motor Speed, Joshua Sandry, Timothy J. Ricker

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The drift diffusion model (DDM) is a widely applied computational model of decision making that allows differentiation between latent cognitive and residual processes. One main assumption of the DDM that has undergone little empirical testing is the level of independence between cognitive and motor responses. If true, widespread incorporation of DDM estimation into applied and clinical settings could ease assessment of whether response disruption occurs due to cognitive or motor slowing. Across two experiments, we manipulated response force (motor speed) and set size to evaluate whether drift rates are independent of motor slowing or if motor slowing impacts the drift …

Consumer Embeddedness And Motivations For Farmers Market Patronage: A Qualitative Exploration In Minnesota, Usa, Alanna Norton, Hye-Young Kim, Virginia Zuiker

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

The rise in popularity of farmers markets in the United States reflects consumers’ negative response to more traditional food distribution systems. Farmers markets provide consumers with a more local and often more personal food purchasing experience. The purpose of this study was to examine consumer motivations to patronize farmers markets through the lens of social, spatial, and natural embeddedness. A qualitative approach was employed utilizing semi-structured, in-depth interviews. These interviews were conducted in person using a set of predetermined questions and revealed nine themes. The findings indicate that two types of consumer choices with different properties exist in farmers market …

Synthesis Of Cyclopropyl Fluorescein Esters For Biochemical Assay, Gabriella Pilar Ruiz Dec 2022

Synthesis Of Cyclopropyl Fluorescein Esters For Biochemical Assay, Gabriella Pilar Ruiz

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Fluorescent molecules have recently been used to observe and quantify biochemical processes. Within the last ten years, these molecules have been used to study serine hydrolases to learn more about how each one functions and what type of chemical groups they prefer. The data from the research on the BS2 serine hydrolase has revealed that there is a need to look further into the fluorogenic ester substrates that contain a cyclopropyl ring after data showed a strong preference to these substrates. This research project focused on the synthesis of fluorogenic cyclopropyl esters in preparation for biochemical assays. The synthesis was …

Suicide At The Intersection Of Race And Gender, Marina Geider Dec 2022

Suicide At The Intersection Of Race And Gender, Marina Geider

Masters Theses

Sociological studies have examined suicide rate differences between groups since the work of Durkheim in 1897, and current literature still draws on his classic theories and methods. Although research has begun identifying the social factors that affect the suicides of Black and White populations differentially, little progress has been made towards an understanding of Black female suicide. The present study takes an intersectional approach to Durkheim's social integration-regulation thesis to bridge this gap. Several negative binomial regression analyses were employed to model suicide counts for Black men, Black women, non-Hispanic White men, and non-Hispanic White women in the United States. …

The Design And Development Of A Miniature Gridded Ecr Ion Thruster, Nicholas Nuzzo Dec 2022

The Design And Development Of A Miniature Gridded Ecr Ion Thruster, Nicholas Nuzzo

Masters Theses

Plasma propulsion, a specific subset of electric propulsion (EP), is a class of space propulsion that produces plasma by excitation of a propellant at or above its ionization energy. This ionized propellant is then accelerated by an externally applied field (magnetic and/or electric) and produces thrust. There is an increasing need for miniaturization in spacecraft technology and the use of plasma EP devices in space propulsion. These systems provide an advantage over traditional chemical propulsion solutions which are less efficient and have more mass. Miniaturization of EP devices allows missions to have more space and mass available for their payloads …

Smce Model For Commercial Areas Suitability In Serang City, Salsa Muafiroh, Adi Wibowo

Jurnal Geografi Lingkungan Tropik (Journal of Geography of Tropical Environments)

Commercial areas refer to specific zones designated for business activities, such as trade, retail, and industry, which play a critical role in supporting regional economic development. In the case of Serang City, the government has planned its development as a hub for commerce and industry. However, selecting an optimal location for commercial areas involves addressing challenges related to multiple criteria and alternative options, each with varying advantages and trade-offs, which often complicates the decision-making process. This research aims to analyze spatial modeling using simulations based on the Spatial Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) method, supported by ILWIS software to determine the most …

Dnp Final Report: Multimodal Pain Management To Improve Patient Satisfaction In Total Joint Replacement Patients, Dana A. Carns

DNP Final Reports

Pain is a costly result of total joint replacement (TJR) surgery. The effect of pain can extend not only to chronic medical problems for patients but also to the hospital’s bottom line by decreasing patient satisfaction. A systematic literature search was performed, and evidence was appraised that supported the efficacy of a standardized multimodal pain management protocol to decrease pain and improve satisfaction in TJR patients. The evidence-based multimodal pain management protocol was implemented during a one-month period in patients undergoing total knee or total hip replacements. Key outcomes were examined and compared to the body of evidence and to …

The Role Of Social Bonds, Self-Control, And Specific Interventions On Outcomes For Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tina Fowler Dec 2022

The Role Of Social Bonds, Self-Control, And Specific Interventions On Outcomes For Serious Juvenile Offenders, Tina Fowler

All Dissertations

Hirschi’s (2008) Social Control theory posits that the strength or weakness of social bonds (i.e., attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief) may impact the likelihood of offending. Youth who enter the juvenile justice system often have weakened social bonds to family, school, peers, and the community, which may contribute to a higher likelihood of offending, future involvement in the juvenile justice system, and other negative outcomes. The current study examined the impact of social bonds, self-control, and specific interventions on offending among a sample of serious juvenile offenders from the Research on Pathways to Desistance dataset. This longitudinal dataset includes a …

Assessment Of Blood Pressure And Postural Control Mechanisms In Parkinson’S Disease During An Orthostatic Challenge, Rabie Fadil Dec 2022

Assessment Of Blood Pressure And Postural Control Mechanisms In Parkinson’S Disease During An Orthostatic Challenge, Rabie Fadil

Theses and Dissertations

Upon standing, 500–1000 mL of blood shifts from the central body compartments to the lower extremities and splanchnic circulation, leading to a decreased venous return to the heart, reduced cardiac output, and a consequent decline in blood pressure. In healthy individuals, the drop in blood pressure is quickly compensated via regulatory mechanisms. On the other hand, people with Parkinson’s disease may experience impaired reflex responses and a persistent drop in blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension, OH), leading to visual disturbances, loss of consciousness, postural instability, and fainting. Parkinson’s disease patients have impaired balance and gait control as a symptom of the …

Optical Control System For Atmospheric Turbulence Mitigation, Martyn Lemon Dec 2022

Optical Control System For Atmospheric Turbulence Mitigation, Martyn Lemon

All Theses

Propagation of laser light is distorted in the presence of atmospheric turbulence. This poses an issue for sensing, free-space optical communications, and transmission of power. With an ever-increasing demand for high-speed data communications, particularly between satellites, unmanned vehicles, and other systems that benefit from a point-to-point link, this issue is critical for the field. A variety of methods have been proposed to circumvent this issue. Some major categories include the manipulation of the light’s structure, an adaptive scheme at the optical receiver, scanning mirror systems, or a transmission of simultaneous signals with a goal to improve robustness.

There is an …

Addressing Meloidogyne Enterolobii Spread In The Sweetpotato Industry: Development Of A High Throughput Survey Detection Method For Root-Knot Nematodes And Quantification Of M. Enterolobii Damage On Storage Roots In Long-Term Assays, Julianna Culbreath Dec 2022

Addressing Meloidogyne Enterolobii Spread In The Sweetpotato Industry: Development Of A High Throughput Survey Detection Method For Root-Knot Nematodes And Quantification Of M. Enterolobii Damage On Storage Roots In Long-Term Assays, Julianna Culbreath

All Theses

Meloidogyne enterolobii is an aggressive root-knot nematode (RKN) species that has emerged as a significant pathogen of sweetpotato in the Southeastern US. Meloidogyne enterolobii is spread through the movement of infected ‘seed’ sweetpotatoes used for propagation, and the RKN resistance in commercial sweetpotato cultivars has proven ineffective against this nematode. This has prompted regulatory agencies to impose quarantines on regions infected with M. enterolobii. Sweetpotato storage roots can be rendered unmarketable due to M. enterolobii infection, resulting in potential overall yield loss. Visual detection of RKN in sweetpotato can be unreliable, and further distinguishing M. enterolobii from other RKN species …

Determinants Of Innovation Outcomes: The Role Of Institutional Quality, Abhijit Sharma, Cristina Sousa, Richard Woodward

Articles

This paper uses unconditional quantile regression analysis to interrogate the effects of institutional quality on innovation outcomes. We assess important determinants of innovation such as property rights (including enforcement of intellectual property rights), human resources within R&D and high-technology exports. Regarding intellectual property rights, while most previous research focuses on patent strength (de jure or book law), we focus on de facto patent enforcement. Using data from the World Bank, the Heritage Foundation and a new patent enforcement index, we construct a panel of fifty countries covering 1998–2017. Our analysis reveals important new insights including the strongly negative impact …

Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis Related Orbital Infection Secondary To Odontogenic Infection, Dennis Levy, Melvyn Yeoh Dec 2022

Acute Invasive Fungal Rhinosinusitis Related Orbital Infection Secondary To Odontogenic Infection, Dennis Levy, Melvyn Yeoh

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

A 64-year old male presented to our institution with painful ophthalmoplegia. The initial differential diagnosis included orbital apex disorders, such as orbital apex syndrome (OAS), cavernous sinus thrombosis (CST), and superior orbital fissure syndrome (SOFS). Ultimately, the diagnosis was acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFRS) secondary to an odontogenic infection from carious teeth in the maxilla. Significant overlap exists between AIFRS and orbital apex disorders, making it prudent to include AIFRS in the differential diagnosis for painful ophthalmoplegia. The purpose of this review is to detail this specific patient's presentation and hospital course along with a brief review of AIFRS and …

Background and Objectives

While somatic mutations have been well-studied in cancer, their roles in other complex traits are much less understood. Our goal is to identify somatic variants that may contribute to the formation of saccular cerebral aneurysms.

Methods

We performed whole-exome sequencing on aneurysm tissues and paired peripheral blood. RNA sequencing and the CRISPR/Cas9 system were then used to perform functional validation of our results.

Results

Somatic variants involved in supervillin (SVIL) or its regulation were found in 17% of aneurysm tissues. In the presence of a mutation in the SVIL gene, the expression level of SVIL …
