Potential Of Mechanical Grain Dryers In Addressing Exposure Of Rice Farmers To Weather Risks, Hernaiz Malanon, Zenaida Sumalde Dec 2022

Potential Of Mechanical Grain Dryers In Addressing Exposure Of Rice Farmers To Weather Risks, Hernaiz Malanon, Zenaida Sumalde

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

Weather risks brought by prolonged rainfall and cloudy days hamper grain drying operations in the Philippines as majority still employ the sun drying method, which limits the opportunity of rice farmers to earn a higher income. While mechanical dryers are considered an important adaptation mechanism to address weather risks, more research needs to be done on their benefits and their disadvantages. This study adapted the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concept which equates hazard, exposure, and vulnerability to quantify risk. Hazard was assessed in terms of the probability of four straight rainy- or cloudy-day occurrences based on a 30-year …

Increased Bundle-Sheath Leakiness Of Co2 During Photosynthetic Induction Shows A Lack Of Coordination Between The C4 And C3 Cycles, Yu Wang, Samantha S. Stutz, Carl J. Bernacchi, Ryan A. Boyd, Donald R. Ort, Stephen P. Long

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Use of a complete dynamic model of NADP-malic enzyme C4 photosynthesis indicated that, during transitions from dark or shade to high light, induction of the C4 pathway was more rapid than that of C3, resulting in a predicted transient increase in bundle-sheath CO2 leakiness (ϕ). Previously, ϕ has been measured at steady state; here we developed a new method, coupling a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscope with a gas-exchange system to track ϕ in sorghum and maize through the nonsteady-state condition of photosynthetic induction. In both species, ϕ showed a transient increase to > 0.35 before declining to a steady state …

A Stacking-Based Misbehavior Detection System In Vehicular Communication Networks, Troy Green Dec 2022

A Stacking-Based Misbehavior Detection System In Vehicular Communication Networks, Troy Green

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Over the past few decades communication systems for vehicles have continued to advance. Communications between these vehicles can be classified into safety related and non safety related messages. An example of a safety related message would be one vehicle warning others of an icy road it encountered, where a non safety related communication would be a passenger streaming a movie. In either case it's important to secure the communications so that the system continues to behave as expected. In this thesis we propose a Misbehavior Detection System (MDS), which is a system that monitors messages sent between vehicles, and detects …

Measuring Acoustic Nonlinearity Of Elastic Materials Using Thermal Modulation Of Ultrasonic Waves, Bibo Zhong Dec 2022

Measuring Acoustic Nonlinearity Of Elastic Materials Using Thermal Modulation Of Ultrasonic Waves, Bibo Zhong

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Nonlinear acoustic techniques have been used to determine the nonlinear properties of materials. Existing methods either require complex equipment to measure absolute nonlinear coefficients or can only be used on laboratory-sized specimens. A recently developed thermal modulation method addresses the limitations of existing methods, but further theoretical analysis and validation are required.

In this dissertation, theoretical analyses were first conducted to study the mechanically and thermally induced acoustoelastic effect. Beginning with the wave equation, the relationship of the ultrasonic wave velocity with respect to mechanical strain and the thermal strain was derived in detail. These analyses provided theoretical support for …

Objective

More similar locations may have similar infectious disease dynamics. There is clear overlap in putative causes for epidemic similarity, such as geographic distance, age structure, and population size. We compare the effects of these potential drivers on epidemic similarity compared to a baseline assumption that differences in the basic reproductive number (R0) will translate to differences in epidemic trajectories.

Methods

Using COVID-19 case counts from United States counties, we explore the importance of geographic distance, population size differences, and age structure dissimilarity on resulting epidemic similarity.

Results

We find clear effects of geographic space, age structure, …
