On (Not) Seeing The Chicken: Perdue, Animal Welfare, And The Failure Of Transparency, Calvin Coker, Rachel A. Coker Jan 2022

On (Not) Seeing The Chicken: Perdue, Animal Welfare, And The Failure Of Transparency, Calvin Coker, Rachel A. Coker

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this essay, we analyze Perdue’s animal welfare campaign from 2016 to 2020 to isolate how demands for transparency are mediated and subverted by Perdue’s public facing rhetoric. Though Perdue’s annual releases and commitments to change nominally constitute a victory for animal welfare advocates, the company’s campaign enacts transparency as a sort of publicity for the company that belies marginal gains for the lives of chickens and may ultimately result in increased meat consumption. In providing trackable metrics, offering paternalistic justifications for their treatments of chickens, and through strategic omissions of language and visuals, Perdue satisfies demands for transparency without …

Cambridge 1629 Anglican Trilogy, Dale B. Billingsley

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In 1629, Thomas and John Buck, Cambridge University Press printers, published three texts—the Book of Common Prayer, the Bible and the Whole Book of Psalmes (known as the “Metrical Psalter”)—that were often bound together in one volume [UL], 1 one copy of which is now on permanent loan to the Archives & Special Collections of Ekstrom Library, University of Louisville. We do not know with any certainty when UL was bound, but because the KJV second edition was published in 1638, with many scholarly corrections based on the original languages, we can assume that the three texts were bound together …

Ultracool dwarf stars and brown dwarfs provide a unique probe of large-scale Galactic structure and evolution; however, until recently spectroscopic samples of sufficient size, depth, and fidelity have been unavailable. Here, we present the identification of 164 M7-T9 ultracool dwarfs in 0.6 deg2 of deep, low-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument as part of the WFC3 Infrared Spectroscopic Parallel Survey and the 3D-HST survey. We describe the methodology by which we isolate ultracool dwarf candidates from over 200,000 spectra, and show that selection by machine-learning classification is superior to …

Writing Centers, Enclaves, And Creating Spaces Of Change Within Universities, Bronwyn T. Williams Jan 2022

Writing Centers, Enclaves, And Creating Spaces Of Change Within Universities, Bronwyn T. Williams

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Writing center scholarship often high-lights the ways in which their distinctive, less directive, nongraded, and individualized instruction can make them distinctive social and pedagogical spaces. There is a simultaneous argument, however, that writing centers are often institutionally vulnerable and may be unable to engage in or promote such differences within the larger college or university. Yet, despite their size and possible vulnerability, the daily practices and institutional positioning of writing centers can help change conversations and work toward a different vision, political approach, and institutional presence. Drawing on Victor Friedman’s concept of “enclaves of different practice” and Brian Massumi’s theories …

Development Of Dental Education For Medical Students In Taiwan During The Japanese Colonial Period, Chun-Pin Chiang, Feng-Chou Cheng, Ling-Hsia Wang, Natsuyo Ozawa, Julia Chang, Shiang-Yao Liu

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose During the Japanese colonial period, Taiwan had a medical school education system for cultivating physicians, but did not have a dental school education system for cultivating “real” dentists. In this investigation, we collected and analyzed the historical documents related to dental education to study the development of dental education for medical students in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. Materials and methods This study mainly analyzed the changes in the development of dental education for medical students in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period through the collection and sorting of relevant historical materials. Results During each stage of …

Evaluation Of Sawbones Training Protocol In Bone Quality Classification Using Tactile Sensation, Tong-Mei Wang, Yu-Chun Lin, Yi-Hao Lan, Li-Deh Lin Jan 2022

Evaluation Of Sawbones Training Protocol In Bone Quality Classification Using Tactile Sensation, Tong-Mei Wang, Yu-Chun Lin, Yi-Hao Lan, Li-Deh Lin

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Bone quality may affect the implantation protocol. This study aimed to assess whether training protocols could improve novice dental practitioners’ abilities in judging bone densities with tactile sensation. Materials and methods Twenty-five operators were recruited to evaluate the density of artificial polyurethane bone blocks by a 2-mm twist-drill drilling and reported the bone quality perceived in a 100-mm VAS line. Five blocks (densities: 0.08–0.48 g/cm3) were used to simulate cancellous bone with extremely low to medium–high densities. Five tests were performed on three days, separated by one week and one month. A training session was arranged on the …

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Our previous study found that 19.0%, 16.9%, 5.3%, 2.3%, 11.9%, and 26.7% of 1064 atrophic glossitis (AG) patients have anemia, serum iron, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiencies, hyperhomocysteinemia, and serum gastric parietal cell antibody (GPCA) positivity, respectively. This study evaluated the anemia, hematinic deficiencies, and hyperhomocysteinemia in 150 male and 914 female AG patients. Materials and methods The blood hemoglobin (Hb) and serum iron, vitamin B12, folic acid, homocysteine, GPCA levels in 150 male and 914 female AG patients were measured and compared with the corresponding levels in 75 male and 457 female healthy control subjects (HCSs), …

Tooth Life Expectancy And Burden Of Tooth Loss: Two Cross-Sectional Studies In Taiwan, Ling-Yu Liang, Ming-Che Tsai, Kuang-Chung Shih, Shiu-Ming Huang, Donald E. Morisky, Earl Fu

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose Life expectancy (LE) is a hypothetical measure to predict life longevity and the indicator of society's overall health. Tooth loss is a worldwide enigma; however, the LE for tooth (LET) are obscure. LET and the burden of tooth loss in Taiwan were estimated using the scheme of National Health Insurance (NHI). Materials and methods Using NHI data, mortality rate, age-specific mortality rate, tooth-extraction rate, and age-specific tooth-extraction rate (ASTER) of Taiwanese in 2004 and 2013 were estimated. ASTER for the individual tooth (ASTER-T) was analyzed for each of 28 permanent teeth according to ID code and tooth location. …

A Novel Approach To Establishing A Temporomandibular Joint Fibrocartilage Cell Line, Chun-Do Oh, Yusen Qiao, Dan Yi, David Reed, Chundo Oh, Di Chen, Louis G. Mercuri

Journal of Dental Sciences

Abstract Background/purpose The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a bi-arthrodial joint that is composed of the temporal bone glenoid fossa and the condylar head of the mandible both having fibrocartilaginous articular surfaces. Functional overloading of the TMJ is the main cause of TMJ osteoarthritis (TMJ OA) disease. The aim of this study was to establish immortalized TMJ fibrocartilage cell clones to provide enough cells to adequately investigate the molecular mechanisms studies of TMJ OA. Materials and methods We have isolated temporomandibular condyle chondrocytes from adult Sprague Dawley rat. The cells were cultured and immortalized by treating with Y-27632, a well-characterized inhibitor …
