Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 22: Stumbling Blocks To An Understanding Of Wallace's Worldview, Charles H. Smith
Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 22: Stumbling Blocks To An Understanding Of Wallace's Worldview, Charles H. Smith
Faculty/Staff Personal Papers
The writings of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823−1913) present a challenge to modern readers, both for the large range of subjects he entertained, and his unique point of view. In this short treatment, ten ‘stumbling blocks’ to an appreciation of Wallace’s thought are outlined which, it is suggested, have caused problems of interpretation in the past.

This dissertation gives an account of and expands upon Stacy Alaimo’s term, “trans-corporeality,” in order to reconsider the rhetorical situation, through conceptualizations of how rhetorical bodies become embodied and traverse one another in various humanities. From “trans-corporeality,” what arises is a “trans-corporeal rhetoric,” which becomes an interdisciplinary rhetoric that speaks to the futures of rhetoric within the boundaries of various humanities, involving notions of embodiment, materiality, corporeality, and what Alaimo calls “bodily natures.” These futures of rhetoric not only wrestle with what embodiment is and can be for rhetorical bodies in various humanities, and what sort of ethics and aesthetics …
Elevated Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Black Females: The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health And Novel Preventive Strategies, Zachary Thomas Martin
Elevated Cardiovascular Disease Risk In Black Females: The Impact Of Social Determinants Of Health And Novel Preventive Strategies, Zachary Thomas Martin
Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive
Among females in the United States, Black females suffer from the highest rates of hypertension, coronary artery disease, stroke, and total cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. Blunted peripheral and cerebral vascular function contribute to the development of CVD and are predictive of CVD risk. Although the causes of disparate cardiovascular health among Black females are multifactorial, upstream contributors such as psychosocial stress attributable to structural and interpersonal racism are likely critical. However, the societal changes required to dismantle structural racism and thus improve health outcomes may take decades to implement. Therefore, in addition to such policy changes, populations who face health …

Chemically Modified Cyclofructans For Sub/Supercritical Fluid Chromatography And Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography, Sepideh Khaki Firooz
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive
Given the importance of supercritical fluid chromatography, several works focused on the application use different SFC stationary phases. In this work, two new derivatized cyclofructan bonded phases with superficially porous particles are introduced in SFC. Sulfonic acid and benzoic acid groups were covalently linked to the cyclofructan molecule to make them polar and hydrophilic. These derivatives were then bonded to superficially porous particles for high-efficiency separations. This work also shows the effect of adding a small amount of water to the modified mobile phases in SFC. Traces of water in the co-solvent enhances the peak symmetry and efficiency of these …

We evaluated the effects of vitamin and mineral supplementation (from pre-breeding to day 83 of gestation) and two rates of gain (from breeding to day 83 of gestation) on trace mineral concentrations in maternal and fetal liver, fetal muscle, and allantoic (ALF) and amniotic (AMF) fluids. Crossbred Angus heifers (n = 35; BW = 359.5 ± 7.1 kg) were randomly assigned to one of two vitamin and mineral supplementation treatments (VMSUP; supplemented (VTM) vs. unsupplemented (NoVTM)). The VMSUP factor was initiated 71 to 148 d before artificial insemination (AI), allowing time for the mineral status of heifers to be altered …

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications
We hypothesized that yearling bulls selected for a 28-d breeding season would have reduced sperm concentrations and morphology, and have increased seminal plasma concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-8 (IL-8). Yearling bulls were selected based on a breeding soundness examination (BSE) at approximately 415 d of age and contained at least 750 million sperm in the ejaculate, with 12 bulls randomly selected for breeding (BREEDERS) and 12 bulls not selected for breeding (NON-BREEDERS). After a 28-d breeding period, all bulls underwent a BSE. Plasma and seminal plasma were collected at each time point for analysis. Data were analysed utilizing either the …

Deep Learning For Protein Property And Structure Prediction, Yuzhi Guo
Deep Learning For Protein Property And Structure Prediction, Yuzhi Guo
Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive
I present my work towards solving the fundamental, challenging, and valuable problem for protein property and structure prediction. Specifically, I focus on solving the problem from three critical aspects: (1) designing powerful deep learning networks for specific protein structure property prediction tasks; (2) proposing general methods that enhancing the protein sequence homologous feature, which is an important input feature of relevant tasks; (3) developing a self-supervised pre-training model for learning structure embeddings from protein tertiary structures. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed methods, I apply several protein downstream tasks including protein secondary structure, solvent accessibility, backbone dihedral angles, protein …

A Genetic Labeling System To Study Dendritic Spine Development In Zebrafish Models Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Elisabeth C. Demarco, George R. Stoner, Estuardo Robles
Neuroscience: Faculty Publications
Dendritic spines are the principal site of excitatory synapse formation in the human brain. Several neurodevelopmental disorders cause spines to develop abnormally, resulting in altered spine number and morphology. Although spine development has been thoroughly characterized in the mammalian brain, spines are not unique to mammals. We have developed a genetic system in zebrafish to enable high-resolution in vivo imaging of spine dynamics during larval development. Although spiny neurons are rare in the larval zebrafish, pyramidal neurons (PyrNs) of the zebrafish tectum form an apical dendrite containing a dense array of dendritic spines. To characterize dendritic spine development, we performed …

Antiabortion Civil Remedies And Unwed Fatherhood As Genetic Entitlement, Yvonne F. Lindgren

Antiabortion civil remedy laws in effect in five states grant putative fathers the right to sue abortion providers for wrongful death regardless of their relationship to the gestating parent. While these laws represent an important new development in the movement to restrict the abortion right, they also expand parental recognition of unwed fathers. Constitutional law requires that unwed fathers who seek to assert parental rights must establish that they possess both biological connection and a relationship with their child or the gestating parent—what has come to be known as “biology-plus.” However, antiabortion civil remedy laws vest parental recognition and rights …

Somatostatin receptors (SSTRs) play versatile roles in inhibiting the secretion of multiple hormones such as growth hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone, and thus are considered as targets for treating multiple tumors. Despite great progress made in therapeutic development against this diverse receptor family, drugs that target SSTRs still show limited efficacy with preferential binding affinity and conspicuous side-effects. Here, we report five structures of SSTR2 and SSTR4 in different states, including two crystal structures of SSTR2 in complex with a selective peptide antagonist and a non-peptide agonist, respectively, a cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of Gi1-bound SSTR2 in the presence of the …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Genotoxicity analysis is one of the most important non-clinical environmental safety investigations required for pharmaceutical and agrochemical product registration. Any medicinal product must undergo a risk evaluation to determine its mutagenicity and carcinogenicity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Ames test is a commonly used in vitro test for determining a test chemical's mutagenic activity. Histidine-dependent Salmonella typhimurium strains with a defective gene that causes the bacteria to synthesis the necessary amino acid histidine for life were tested for mutagenic potential. In order to reveal pro-mutagens and mutagens, the mutagenic potential of both plate integration and pre-incubation techniques was …
Optical And Computational Methods For Detection And Quantification Of Protein-Protein Interactions Using Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, David James Schodt
Optical And Computational Methods For Detection And Quantification Of Protein-Protein Interactions Using Single-Molecule Localization Microscopy, David James Schodt
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Interactions between proteins residing on or near the membranes of biological cells trigger many of the signaling cascades that facilitate the transmission of information between the exterior and the interior of the cell. Normal function of these protein-protein interactions (PPIs) is required for the healthy functioning of complex single- and multi-cellular organisms. Abnormalities involving these interactions are implicated in several diseases, such as the progression and treatment resistance of many forms of cancer. Understanding both the normal and abnormal behaviors of these interactions is necessary to improve our understanding of such diseases, which in turn can drive drug development for …

Optimal reproductive performance occurs when birds time reproduction to coincide with peak food availability. Deviation from optimal timing, or mismatch, can affect productivity, though birds may mediate some mismatch effects by altering their incubation behavior. We studied the consequences of nesting timing (i.e., clutch initiation relative to an index of spring start) on productivity across the breeding range of American kestrels (Falco sparverius) in the United States and southern Canada, and associations between nesting timing, incubation behavior, and hatching asynchrony. We used observations from long-term nest box monitoring, remote trail cameras, and community-scientist-based programs to obtain data on …

In recent decades, wildfires in many areas of the United States (U.S.) have become larger and more frequent with increasing anthropogenic pressure, including interactions between climate, land-use change, and human ignitions. We aimed to characterize the spatiotemporal patterns of contemporary fire characteristics across the contiguous United States (CONUS). We derived fire variables based on frequency, fire radiative power (FRP), event size, burned area, and season length from satellite-derived fire products and a government records database on a 50 km grid (1984–2020). We used k-means clustering to create a hierarchical classification scheme of areas with relatively homogeneous fire characteristics, or modern …

Taking into consideration learner engagement during a chemistry lesson is a very crucial step if conceptual understanding is one of the goals. In the current times, teachers are drastically losing a grasp of their learners during lessons, especially chemistry lessons. However, studies that borrowed from the kindergartens have proved that incorporation of songs during lessons may engage learners. This qualitative research, which took an action research design, explored the feasibility of applying songs in rich science content in enhancing interest, motivation and engagement in ionic bonding and similar chemistry concepts among Kenyan high school students. The aim of the study …

Dermatology Meeting Abstracts
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor(AhR) is a ligand-activated transcription factor that responds to chemical carcinogens. An endogenous AhR agonist, 6-Formylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole, is produced following ultraviolet light(UV) absorption by tryptophan. Epidemiological studies show a correlation between exposure to AhR agonists and non melanoma skin cancer(NMSC). As an example, AhR activation promotes metabolism of pro-carcinogens to carcinogens such as the metabolism of benzo(a)pyrene to benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide(BPDE). There are differing epidemiological studies which explain the relationship between obesity and NMSC—some demonstrate a positive association while others demonstrate a negative association. However, evidence supporting an inverse correlation is relatively weak and heavily confounded by UV …

Introduction: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is associated with a significant disease burden. The use of high-cost settings care are common among HS patients.
Objective: To explore factors that may influence hospital admissions and readmissions among HS patients.
Methods: Using ICD-9/10 codes (705.83 and L73.2), we extracted the medical records of adult HS patients who visited the Henry Ford Health System (HFHS) ED between 2010 and 2020.
Results: Of the 100 HS patients, 52 (52%) were admitted to an inpatient service. Hypertension (OR:2.55,95% CI:1.11-5.83, p value=0.027), diabetes mellitus (OR:2.42, 95%CI:1.05-5.61, p value =0.039), cellulitis (OR: 19.28, 95%CI:4.23-87.96 p<0.001), sepsis (OR:10.25, 95%CI:1.34-89.24, p value=0.025), and depression (OR:3.32, 95%CI:1.10-10.04, p value =0.002) were significant predictors of admission. Chronic kidney disease (OR:3.05, 95% CI:1.00-9.23,p value=0.049), congestive heart failure (OR:4.06, 95%CI:1.19-13.80, p value =0.025), coronary artery disease (OR:15.20, 95%CI:2.80-82.65, p value=0.002), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR:8.94, 95%: 1.51-52.86, p value =0.003), cellulitis (OR:4.62, 95%CI:1.66-12.88, p=0.003), sepsis (OR:3.75, 95%CI:1.02-13.82,p value =0.047), and depression (OR:4.50, 95%CI:1.54-13.18, p value=0.006) were positively associated with readmission. Those who received outpatient dermatology care had a lower risk of being admitted (n=87, 28.7% vs n=13,100%, p <0.001) and readmitted (n=10, 11.5% vs n=5, 38.5%, p value =0.0108).

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is linked to lifelong reductions in muscle mass due to intrinsic functional deficits in myoblasts, but the mechanisms underlying these deficits are not known. Our objective was to determine if the deficits were associated with changes in inflammatory and adrenergic regulation of IUGR myoblasts, as was previously observed in IUGR muscle. Primary myoblasts were isolated from IUGR fetal sheep produced by hyperthermia-induced placental insufficiency (PI-IUGR; n = 9) and their controls (n = 9) and from IUGR fetal sheep produced by maternofetal inflammation (MI-IUGR; n = 6) and their …

Introduction: Diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels or hyperglycemia causing the increase of free radicals which increase the risk of various diseases. Ya-Hom Teppajid which consists of 45 plants and their properties had shown anti-diabetic activities in some herbs and the rest of the herbs have not been studied for these activities.
Methods: The ethanolic extract of plant componentsinYa-Hom Teppajid were to investigate α-amylase, α-glucosidase inhibitory, and antioxidant activities (DPPH, and TBARS), including total phenolic (TPC) and total flavonoid (TFC).
Results: Twenty-four plants showed antioxidant activities, while fifteen plants exhibited enzyme inhibition of diabetes mechanisms. The ethanolic extract …
The Mythical Carcinogenesis Potential Of Covid-19 Vaccination: Perspectives, Panuch Eiamprapaporn
The Mythical Carcinogenesis Potential Of Covid-19 Vaccination: Perspectives, Panuch Eiamprapaporn
Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
In the era of COVID-19, vaccination is the most powerful shield for new-normal living. Although developed rapidly, the two leading vaccines, whole virus vaccines and viral component vaccines, have proven efficacy. However, risk of cancer from the COVID-19 vaccines is a concern despite only minor effects on DNA repair enzymes. There is a hypothesis that COVID-19 infection impairs RB protein and p53 protein, a tumor suppressor and gatekeeper to functions of the cell. Also, the disease causes inflammation leading to the propagation of carcinogenesis. With the benefit of immunization, COVID-19 vaccination might have the least potential effect of carcinogenesis. As …

Introduction: Even though cemented Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) has been a standard treatment for osteoarthritic knee patients, it had high failure, especially, in young male with high body mass index. New design of cementless TKAhas been developed to achieve biologic fixation which may help the implant to last longer.
Objectives: This study investigated the outcomes between all cementless and all cemented TKA for the patients undergoing bilateral TKA under one anesthesia.
Methods: We randomized the sequence of knee replacement in forty osteoarthritic knee patients (80 knees) who underwent bilateral TKA with patellar resurfacing under one anesthesia. All participants received an …

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine
Introduction: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells that have the ability to differentiate into various cell, types including osteoblasts. They are the potential cell source for bone repair. MSCs reside in specialized microenvironments that sustain and regulate their fate. As the conventional 2D-culture system lacks the key elements for supporting bone regeneration, the construction of the microenvironment for cell culture consists of the 3D-hydroxyapatite (HA) scaffold, and biomimetic calcium phosphate coated 3D-printed HA is important.
Objectives: To characterize the proliferation, adhesion, and osteogenic differentiation of MSCs grown with the different 3D-hydroxyapatite scaffolds.
Methods: MSCs isolated from the bone …
