Optimizing Process-Based Models To Predict Current And Future Soil Organic Carbon Stocks At High-Resolution, Marie-Anne De Graaff, Ryan Will

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

From hillslope to small catchment scales (< 50 km2), soil carbon management and mitigation policies rely on estimates and projections of soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks. Here we apply a process-based modeling approach that parameterizes the MIcrobial-MIneral Carbon Stabilization (MIMICS) model with SOC measurements and remotely sensed environmental data from the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in SW Idaho, USA. Calibrating model parameters reduced error between simulated and observed SOC stocks by 25%, relative to the initial parameter estimates and better captured local gradients in climate and productivity. The calibrated parameter ensemble was used to produce spatially continuous, high-resolution (10 m …

Effect Of Kaolin On Biogenic Coalbed Methane Production And The Response Of Microbial Community, He Huan, Huang Xinying, Huang Zaixing, Zhang Qian, Chen Zihao, Zhao Han, Ren Hengxing, Huang Guanhua

Coal Geology & Exploration

Kaolin is a common inorganic mineral in nature, which can promote the growth and metabolism of microorganisms. There is a large amount of kaolin in coal, however, there are few reports about its bio-gas production of coal. In order to investigate the effect of kaolin on biogas production, the coal obtained from Yulin, Shaanxi Province was taken as the research object, domesticated microorganisms were taken as the research flora, and different qualities of kaolin were added into the culture media to make biological simulation of gas production. The changes of CH4 content, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration, coenzyme F …

Associations Of Dietary Antioxidants With Glycated Hemoglobin And Insulin Sensitivity In Adults With And Without Type 1 Diabetes, Arpita Basu, Amy C. Alman, Janet K. Snell-Bergeon

Kinesiology and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Research

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been associated with increased risks of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and poor glycemic control and oxidative stress play a major role in its pathology. There is a lack of data on the role of dietary antioxidant micronutrients, including vitamins and trace elements, in glycemic control in T1D. The aim of this study is to examine associations of dietary intakes of micronutrients with glycemic status. We report data from a cross-sectional analysis from the coronary artery calcification in type 1 diabetes (CACTI) study (n = 1257; T1D: n = 568; nondiabetic controls: n = 689) collected between …

Coal Geology & Exploration

The Hunchun Basin is an important coal-bearing region in Jilin Province, northeastern China. The analysis of the sedimentary paleogeography of the Paleogene Hunchun Formation and coal-accumulation law in the sequence framework provides a theoretical basis for future coal and coalbed methane exploration. The lithofacies, sedimentary systems, sequence paleogeography, and coal accumulation characteristics were analyzed based on regional geology, drilling cores and well logging data. The results show five rock types, including gravel, sandstone, siltstone, mudstone, and combustible organic rock, and twelve lithofacies. The Hunchun Formation was divided into three third-order sequences by three sequence interfaces, including the regional unconformity surface, …

A Human Single-Neuron Dataset For Face Perception, Runnan Cao, Chujun Lin, Nicholas J Brandmeir, Shuo Wang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The human amygdala and hippocampus have long been associated with face perception. Here, we present a dataset of single-neuron activity in the human amygdala and hippocampus during face perception. We recorded 2082 neurons from the human amygdala and hippocampus when neurosurgical patients with intractable epilepsy performed a one-back task using natural face stimuli, which mimics natural face perception. Specifically, our data include (1) single-neuron activity from the amygdala (996 neurons) and hippocampus (1086 neurons), (2) eye movements (gaze position and pupil), (3) psychological assessment of the patients, and (4) social trait judgment ratings from a subset of patients and a …

Size Specific Boldness Associated With Differences In Resource Requirements And Habitat Use: A Cross-Sectional Study In Hermit Crabs, Mark Briffa, Rose Archer

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Abstract Animal personality is often studied within compressed periods of observation that represent narrow windows in comparison to animal lifespans. While much is known about the relations between repeatable personality traits and cross-situational behavioural plasticity, less is known about how such traits might differ across age classes or life-history transitions. We conducted a cross-sectional study of startle response duration in three size classes of Pagurus bernhardus, the common European hermit crab. We defined size classes using transitions in the preferred species of gastropod shells that accompany growth, and this change in preference is in turn associated with a transition from …

Heterogeneity is a hallmark of cancer. The advent of single-cell technologies has helped uncover heterogeneity in a high-throughput manner in different cancers across varied contexts. Here we apply single-cell sequencing technologies to reveal inherent heterogeneity in assumptively monoclonal pancreatic cancer (PDAC) cell lines and patient-derived organoids (PDOs). Our findings reveal a high degree of both genomic and transcriptomic polyclonality in monolayer PDAC cell lines, custodial variation induced by growing apparently identical cell lines in different laboratories, and transcriptomic shifts in transitioning from 2D to 3D spheroid growth models. Our findings also call into question the validity of widely available immortalized, …

Transmission, Strain Diversity, And Zoonotic Potential Of Chronic Wasting Disease Jun 2022

Transmission, Strain Diversity, And Zoonotic Potential Of Chronic Wasting Disease

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a prion disease affecting several species of captive and free-ranging cervids. In the past few decades, CWD has been spreading uncontrollably, mostly in North America, resulting in a high increase of CWD incidence but also a substantially higher number of geographical regions affected. The massive increase in CWD poses risks at several levels, including contamination of the environment, transmission to animals cohabiting with cervids, and more importantly, a putative transmission to humans. In this review, I will describe the mechanisms and routes responsible for the efficient transmission of CWD, the strain diversity of natural CWD, …

The Reconciliation Of Future Israel In Romans 9–11, Kent T. Maitland Jun 2022

The Reconciliation Of Future Israel In Romans 9–11, Kent T. Maitland

Liberty Theological Review

This paper contends that supersessionism does not adequately understand the soteriological concept of reconciliation as it applies specifically to Israel because it does not correctly understand the apostolic hermeneutic. Reconciliation refers to the ending of hostility between two parties, which encompasses the removal of the root cause of the enmity in order to effect a change in their relationship from “enemy” to “friend.” While reconciliation describes the work of salvation accomplished in Christ for all humanity, it takes on additional significance when applied to Israel. In Romans 9–11, Paul highlights Israel’s enmity with God, God’s provision for removing the enmity’s …

The Preservation Of Wildlife Habitat In Ecosystems: Towards A Direction Under International Law To Prevent Species' Extinction, Anne Batchelor

Florida Journal of International Law

This article will advocate that treaties based on international environmental policy which favor global ecosystem preservation are the best, perhaps the only solution, which will ensure the survival of wildlife for present and future generations. The article begins with an overview of the alarming rate of species’ extinction occurring presently on the earth. Particular emphasis will be placed on extinction rates occurring in tropical rainforests which provide habitats for the greatest diversity of the world’s life forms. Deforestation of tropical rainforests has been characterized as “one of the world's great ecological disasters in the closing decades of the twentieth century.” …

Agriculture And Environment In French Law, Michel Prieur Jun 2022

Agriculture And Environment In French Law, Michel Prieur

Florida Journal of International Law

For a long time modern French agriculture has ignored environmental considerations. In the last five years, it has become evident that industrialized agriculture has been the source of new pollution. This pollution, mainly nitrates in the water, is due to the excess use of nitrogen fertilizers. In addition to the pollution problems, significant urban and leisure development pressures threaten much of the agricultural land. Even though 60% of the soil remains in agricultural production, rural areas have been transformed significantly.

Although the population in rural areas decreased for over a century, in 1982 the population census indicated an increase of …

International Legal Ramifications Of Biotechnology, James S. Wershow Jun 2022

International Legal Ramifications Of Biotechnology, James S. Wershow

Florida Journal of International Law

More than any other aspect of society, biotechnology challenges legal institutions to address the special problems presented by this new technology. Both scientific and social factors control the development of law and the regulation of biotechnology in all nations. Further, events in one nation often effect responses in other nations. Society first recognizes, in an obscure way, the impact that a scientific development will have. Then society, through legal institutions, slowly forms a consensus on the necessary changes and begins to accommodate existing legal concepts to satisfy the needs presented by scientific development.

Because the guideposts and precedents in this …

Faculty Research 2022

Obesity is recognized as a significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD). Studies have supported the notion that obesity accelerates AD-related pathophysiology in mouse models of AD. The majority of studies, to date, have focused on the use of early-onset AD models. Here, we evaluate the impact of genetic risk factors on late-onset AD (LOAD) in mice fed with a high fat/high sugar diet (HFD). We focused on three mouse models created through the IU/JAX/PITT MODEL-AD Center. These included a combined risk model with

Variation On A Theme: The Structures And Biosynthesis Of Specialized Fatty Acid Natural Products In Plants, Samuel Scott, Edgar B. Cahoon, Lucas Busta

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Plants are able to construct lineage-specific natural products from a wide array of their core metabolic pathways. Considerable progress has been made toward documenting and understanding, for example, phenylpropanoid natural products derived from phosphoenolpyruvate via the shikimate pathway, terpenoid compounds built using isopentyl pyrophosphate, and alkaloids generated by the extensive modification of amino acids. By comparison, natural products derived from fatty acids have received little attention, except for unusual fatty acids in seed oils and jasmonate-like oxylipins. However, scattered but numerous reports show that plants are able to generate many structurally diverse compounds from fatty acids, including some with highly …

Sedimentary Characteristics And Associated Carbon And Nutrients Of Overbank Sediments Deposited During The 2018, 2019, And 2020 Floods In Embanked Floodplains Along The Lower Mississippi River Near Natchez, Mississippi, Rachel Kelk Jun 2022

Sedimentary Characteristics And Associated Carbon And Nutrients Of Overbank Sediments Deposited During The 2018, 2019, And 2020 Floods In Embanked Floodplains Along The Lower Mississippi River Near Natchez, Mississippi, Rachel Kelk

Master's Theses

The Lower Mississippi River (LMR) experienced major floods in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Sediment deposition in the embanked floodplains during floods represent important storage and sequestration opportunities for carbon and nutrients from ~40% of the continental USA. This research aims to compare depositional thicknesses, organic matter (OM), carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P) concentrations, and grain sizes in floodplain sediments deposited by the combined 2018-19 floods to the 2020 flood along the LMR near Natchez, Mississippi. Greater depositional thicknesses in 2018-19 are best explained by their combined flood durations; the 2019 flood was the longest in recorded history. Slightly higher …

Comparing Brood Care Behaviors Across Five Fertility Castes In The Invasive Fire Ant,Solenopsis Invicta,And The Expression Of Inotocin, Alexis Masnjak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The fire ant, Solenopsis invicta, is one of the most successful of the invasive eusocial invertebrates. The fire ant’s prolific reproductive capacity and its division of labor among five fertility castes are key factors to its successful invasion and global colonization across all continents except Antarctica. Although the rate of self-care and brood care by sterile S. invicta workers is well known, little is known about the rate of self-care and brood care by the other four fertility castes. In this study, I quantified the frequency and duration of behaviors by alate males, alate queens, newly mated queens, older mature …

The Molecular Mechanism Of Load Adaptation By Branched Actin Networks, Tai-De Li, Peter Bieling, Julian Weichsel, R Dyche Mullins, Daniel A. Fletcher

Advanced Science Research Center

Branched actin networks are self-assembling molecular motors that move biological membranes and drive many important cellular processes, including phagocytosis, endocytosis, and pseudopod protrusion. When confronted with opposing forces, the growth rate of these networks slows and their density increases, but the stoichiometry of key components does not change. The molecular mechanisms governing this force response are not well understood, so we used single-molecule imaging and AFM cantilever deflection to measure how applied forces affect each step in branched actin network assembly. Although load forces are observed to increase the density of growing filaments, we find that they actually decrease the …

School of Medicine Faculty Publications

Microbiome-derived Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) has been shown by multiple laboratories to reside within Alzheimer's disease (AD)-affected neocortical and hippocampal neurons. LPS and other pro-inflammatory stressors strongly induce a defined set of NF-kB (p50/p65)-sensitive human microRNAs, including a brain-enriched Homo sapien microRNA-30b-5p (hsa-miRNA-30b-5p; miRNA-30b). Here we provide evidence that this neuropathology-associated miRNA, known to be upregulated in AD brain and LPS-stressed human neuronal-glial (HNG) cells in primary culture targets the neurofilament light (NF-L) chain mRNA 3'-untranslated region (3'-UTR), which is conducive to the post-transcriptional downregulation of NF-L expression observed within both AD and LPS-treated HNG cells. A deficiency of NF-L …
