The natural environment is considered a free resource for humans to utilize, but doing so comes with costs associated with how it is used, e.g., degraded ecosystems, fragmented landscapes, pollution and climate change. These negative effects make humans’ place on Earth inhospitable. The inherent challenge is the inability to connect or simply deny the association of the poor health currently experienced by people to the cumulative degradation of various ecosystems. A degraded ecosystem is not just a loss to a diverse planetary system or a waste in its own right, but because of the complex relationships involved, it becomes a …

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

People across the world and throughout history have gone to great lengths to enhance their physical appearance. Evolutionary psychologists and ethologists have largely attempted to explain this phenomenon via mating preferences and strategies. Here, we test one of the most popular evolutionary hypotheses for beauty-enhancing behaviors, drawn from mating market and parasite stress perspectives, in a large cross-cultural sample. We also test hypotheses drawn from other influential and non-mutually exclusive theoretical frameworks, from biosocial role theory to a cultural media perspective. Survey data from 93,158 human participants across 93 countries provide evidence that behaviors such as applying makeup or using …

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) has dramatically increased the life expectancy of people with HIV (PWH), nearly 50% develop HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders. This may be due to previously uncontrolled HIV viral replication, immune activation maintained by residual viral replication or activation from other sources, or cART-associated neurotoxicity. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of cART on cognition and neuroimaging biomarkers in PWH before and after initiation of cART compared with that in HIV-negative controls (HCs) and HIV elite controllers (ECs) who remain untreated.

METHODS: We recruited 3 groups of participants from the University …

BACKGROUND: Every year, an estimated one million children and young adolescents become ill with tuberculosis, and around 226,000 of those children die. Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra (Xpert Ultra) is a molecular World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended rapid diagnostic test that simultaneously detects Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and rifampicin resistance. We previously published a Cochrane Review 'Xpert MTB/RIF and Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra assays for tuberculosis disease and rifampicin resistance in children'. The current review updates evidence on the diagnostic accuracy of Xpert Ultra in children presumed to have tuberculosis disease. Parts of this review update informed the 2022 WHO updated guidance on management of …

Children in low-resource settings carry enteric pathogens asymptomatically and are frequently treated with antibiotics, resulting in opportunities for pathogens to be exposed to antibiotics when not the target of treatment (i.e., bystander exposure). We quantified the frequency of bystander antibiotic exposures for enteric pathogens and estimated associations with resistance among children in eight low-resource settings. We analyzed 15,697 antibiotic courses from 1,715 children aged 0 to 2 y from the MAL-ED birth cohort. We calculated the incidence of bystander exposures and attributed exposures to respiratory and diarrheal illnesses. We associated bystander exposure with phenotypic susceptibility of E. coli isolates in …

Gut Permeability May Be Associated With Periprosthetic Joint Infection After Total Hip And Knee Arthroplasty, Emanuele Chisari, Jeongeun Cho, Marjan Wouthuyzen-Bakker, Javad Parvizi

Rothman Institute Papers

A growing number of recent investigations on the human genome, gut microbiome, and proteomics suggests that the loss of mucosal barrier function, particularly in the gastrointestinal tract, may substantially affect antigen trafficking, ultimately influencing the close bidirectional interaction between the gut microbiome and the immune system. This cross-talk is highly influential in shaping the host immune system function and ultimately affecting the outcome of interventions. We hypothesized that the loss of mucosal barrier in the gut may be associatedto acute and chronic periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). Zonulin, soluble CD14 (sCD14), and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) were tested in plasma as part of …

Hookworm In Stray Cats (Felis Silvestris Catus) As Cutaneous Larva Migrant Agent (Clm) In Humans, Fadhil Ihsan Mahendra, Soebaktiningsih Soebaktiningsih, Risma Karlina Prabawati

Folia Medica Indonesiana

Highlights : • Risk factors that can increase the incidence of CLM in humans include male sex, children aged <15 years, low-income people, and daily behaviour of walking outdoors without using footwear, especially on the sand. • Risk factors that play the most role in increasing the incidence of CLM in humans are walking outdoors without using footwear, especially on the sand. Abstract : Cats arethe host of a wide variety of microorganisms including ectoparasites and endoparasites. One of theendoparasites that infect cats is hookworm. The hookworms consists of two groups, the animal hookworms, and the human hookworms. The manifestation that can be caused by animal hookworms to humans is Cutaneous Larva Migrant (CLM). This study aimed to discover whether hookworm in stray cats (Felis silvestris catus) can cause CLM in humans. We performed a systematic search in Pubmed/Medline and Cochrane published between 2016 and 2021 with no restrictions by language, research country, or type of research design . The results of the analysis showed that the high level of hookworms infection in stray cats could increase the risk of CLM in humans. Based on the study, we could conclude that the high prevalence of hookworm infection in cats plays an important role in the increased risk of zoonoses in humans which in turn could also increase the prevalence of CLM in humans.

Recurrent Giant Cell Myocarditis After Heart Transplant: A Case Report, Eitan S. Frankel, Alexander G. Hajduczok, Indranee N. Rajapreyar, Yevgeniy Brailovsky

Division of Cardiology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Giant cell myocarditis (GCM) is a rare but well-known cause of fulminant myocarditis. Despite optimal medical therapy, many patients progress to orthotopic heart transplant (OHT). We present a case of recurrent GCM following OHT, including complex considerations in patient management and infectious sequelae.

CASE SUMMARY: A 33-year-old previously healthy male presented with 2 months of worsening shortness of breath. Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) demonstrated a left ventricular ejection fraction of 30-35%. After ruling out an ischaemic aetiology, he was discharged on guideline-directed medical therapy and later presented with productive cough, worsening dyspnoea on exertion, and diarrhoea. He was found to …

Myofibroblast activation is a cellular response elicited by a variety of physiological or pathological insults whereby cells initiate a coordinated response intended to eradicate the insult and then revert back to a basal state. However, an underlying theme in various disease states is persistent myofibroblast activation that fails to resolve. Based on multiple observations, we hypothesized that the secreted factors harvested from co-culturing amniotic stem cells might mimic the anti-inflammatory state that cell-free amniotic fluid (AF) elicits. We optimized an amnion epithelial and amniotic fluid cell co-culture system, and tested this hypothesis in the context of myofibroblast activation. However, we …

BACKGROUND: Jaundice within the first 1-2 weeks of a neonate's life will generally self-resolve; however, if it lasts longer than this time frame it warrants further work up. Direct or conjugated hyperbilirubinemia can suggest neonatal cholestasis, which in turn reflects marked reduction in bile secretion and flow. The differential diagnosis for neonatal cholestasis is broad. Neonatal choledocholithiasis is a rare cause of neonatal cholestasis, but should be considered on the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with elevated conjugated bilirubin.

CASE PRESENTATION: We describe an infant who presented with neonatal cholestasis. He subsequently underwent work up for biliary atresia, as this …

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Vaccination during pregnancy is critical to the health of birthing persons and infants. Yet, persistent racial disparities in vaccination threaten health outcomes in the U.S. (Lu et al., 2015). Vaccination coverage remains low among non-Hispanic Blacks and other racial minorities – a situation magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic (Freimuth, Jamison, An, Hancock, & Quinn, 2017; Stokes et al., 2020). Consequently, understanding vaccine attitudes for systemically disadvantaged groups is paramount to promoting public health. Illuminating barriers to vaccine uptake creates space for new strategies to reduce hesitancy.

To investigate Black women’s/birthing people attitudes toward influenza and pertussis vaccination during pregnancy, we …

Out of 36 developed countries, the U.S. ranks 33 for infant mortality. In the U.S, the infant mortality rates occur at higher rates among African Americans. Black infants have a higher likelihood to die from low birth weights or other birth-related complications compared to White infants. Furthermore, some of these women reside in unsafe pregnancy areas also known as “materno toxic” zones which are characterized by the presence of crime, food insecurity etc. Though Black mothers are 2.3 times more likely to receive late or no prenatal care compared to White mothers, the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these issues by making …

We investigated whether individuals believe they have a right to information during a crisis, and whether attitudes about crisis-related information sharing differ by age and one’s role in providing or consuming information. We measured attitudes about aspects of data sharing related to COVID-19: researchers’ obligation to share data, publishers’ obligation to share information, and libraries’ responsibility to provide them. We predicted younger individuals, especially students as consumers of information, would report stronger preference for open access to pandemic-related information. A principal components analysis was performed, and two predicted factors emerged: information-sharing obligations and libraries’ responsibility to provide resources. Age was …

The Ultimate Congressional Workaround: Why Businesses Should Advocate The Return Of A Robust And Originalist Nondelegation Doctrine After Nfib V. Osha And Biden V. Missouri, Tyler A. Dodd

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Biden administration looked for a way to stop the spread of the virus. To stop the spread, the Biden administration announced a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all businesses with over 100 employees and for all healthcare facilities receiving funds from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”). OSHA and CMS would administer the mandates, respectively. The agencies needed to administer the vaccine mandate because Congress failed to enact a mandate, and the agencies had broad and indefinite regulatory power in enacting public health measures. In NFIB v. OSHA the United States …

Objective:This study aimed to explore the distribution and speciation of selenium amino acids in different solubilized proteins of selenium-enriched broccoli, soybean, corn and barley seedlings. Methods:The contents of selenomethionine, selenocysteine, methylselenocysteine and selenethionine in four selenium-enriched cereals and cruciferous agricultural products were determined by high performance liquid chromatography-hydride generation-atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Moreover, the distribution characteristics of each selenium amino acid in albumin, globulin, gliadin and glutelin with different solubilized proteins were analyzed. Results:The content and distribution of selenium amino acids of the four selenium-enriched plants in different protein components were significantly different (P<0.05). SeMet was …

Hundreds of millions of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA-LNP vaccine doses have already been administered to humans. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the immune effects of this platform. The mRNA-LNP-based SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is highly inflammatory, and its synthetic ionizable lipid component responsible for the induction of inflammation has a long in vivo half-life. Since chronic inflammation can lead to immune exhaustion and non-responsiveness, we sought to determine the effects of pre-exposure to the mRNA-LNP on adaptive immune responses and innate immune fitness. We found that pre-exposure to mRNA-LNPs or LNP alone led to long-term inhibition of the adaptive immune response, which …

BACKGROUND: Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines were first licensed as a three-dose series. Two doses are now widely recommended in some age groups; there are data suggesting high efficacy with one dose. We updated a systematic literature review of HPV vaccine effectiveness by number of doses in observational studies.

METHODS: We searched Medline and Embase databases from January 1, 2007, through September 29, 2021. Data were extracted and summarized in a narrative synthesis. We also conducted quality assessments for bias due to selection, information, and confounding.

RESULTS: Overall, 35 studies were included; all except one were conducted within the context of …
