An Overview Of The Significance And Application Of Constructability In Value Engineering, Samereh Jadidoleslami, Mojtaba Azizi
CSID Journal of Infrastructure Development
Value Engineering (VE) and constructability are not distinct; instead, they are complementary work processes that may be used as vital elements in achieving total quality. Constructability is a value management (VM) tool developed as an attempt to integrate design and construction activities. VE is often implemented when there is a limited chance to influence the cost and time of the project effectively. Thus, project contractors and owners conduct VE analysis before construction by applying the constructability process. The activities of these two processes somehow complement each other in achieving their goals. Considering the output of existing VE approaches, it seems …

Women, Gender Politics, And Resistance In Kashmir, Seema Kazi
Socio-Legal Review
This article focuses on Kashmiri women and the gender politics underpinning the August 5, 2019 revocation of Article 370 in Kashmir. Reclaiming Kashmiri women’s property rights was among the justifications cited by the state for revoking Kashmir’s autonomy. Paradoxically, however, most analyses centered on its political implications. Kashmiri women’s opinions regarding the revocation, the state’s use of the women’s rights argument to justify the same, or Kashmiri women’s rights and experiences in the wake of the revocation were seldom the subjects of discussion or analysis. Beginning with a brief overview of Kashmiri women’s role in the Kashmiri struggle, I juxtapose …

Effects Of Interest Rate Ceiling On Sustainability Of Microfinance Institutions: Lessons From Tanzania, Goodluck Charles
Business Management Review
This study explores the effects of an interest rate ceiling on the sustainability of Microfinance Institutions (MFIs). Based on qualitative research which entailed collection of online data from 53 respondents and in-depth face-to-face interviews with 10 MFI practitioners in Tanzania, it is evident that an interest rate ceiling interferes with competitive market forces. Given that MFIs vary in size, operational capacity, customer segment and business model, applying a single blanket interest rate leads to capital and credit diversion, hidden non-interest charges, the emergence of informal lenders and a black market, the withholding of credit from risky markets and the closure …

Herpes Zoster And Resultant Segmental Zoster Paresis: A Casereport And Literature Reviewarticle, Yen-Jou Ho, Hong-Yi Lin, Yao-Jen Chen
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Herpes zoster (HZV) is ascribed to the reactivation of the dormant varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in the dorsal root ganglia. The most commonly seen manifestation is a painful skin rash. However, several additional complications have been documented in the literature. A less-mentioned yet severe complication is segmental zoster paresis (SZP), which can cause limb paralysis. SZP's mechanism is still under debate, and a direct invasion of motor fibers due to anatomical adjacency has been proposed. Here we report a patient who had sudden onset of left upper limb paresis and gradually developed a skin rash afterward, which a dermatologist confirmed as …

Teachers' Perspectives On Translanguaging As A Pedagogical Resource In Senior High School English Classes, Karen Lynn G. Macawile, Sterling M. Plata
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
Translanguaging has been documented in previous research as a pedagogical resource in language classrooms. However, the monolinguistic culture prevents the leveraging of this resource in language learning. In addition, despite the extensive research on translanguaging, its use as a pedagogical resource is limited, particularly in the Philippine context. This study explores teachers’ perspectives on translanguaging in Senior High School subjects where English is the medium of instruction. Findings from focus group discussions reveal that the participants leverage translanguaging as a resource to help students in knowledge construction, meaning-making, and problem-solving. This study concludes with implications for policymakers and language teachers …

Analysis Of Core Claims, Assumptions, And Silences: A Basis For Re-Designing The Enacted K-12 English Curriculum And Reconceptualizing Communicative Competence, Alejandro S. Bernardo
Journal of English and Applied Linguistics
This paper examines the core claims, assumptions, and silences of the enacted K-12 English curriculum in the Philippines, guided by three important questions: What does the curriculum claim will happen to those using or exposed to it? What does the curriculum say about the English language and learning it? What does the curriculum say nothing about? These questions generate an understanding of how Philippine English (PE) and communicative competence are conceptualized in the written English curriculum currently running in the country. How the enacted curriculum (dis)regards Philippine English and how it (mis)construes communicative competence are problematized in this paper that …

An emerging paradigm suggests that gut glycosylation is a key force in maintaining the homeostatic relationship between the gut and its microbiota. Nevertheless, it is unclear how gut glycosylation contributes to the HIV-associated microbial translocation and inflammation that persist despite viral suppression and contribute to the development of several comorbidities. We examined terminal ileum, right colon, and sigmoid colon biopsies from HIV-infected virally-suppressed individuals and found that gut glycomic patterns are associated with distinct microbial compositions and differential levels of chronic inflammation and HIV persistence. In particular, high levels of the pro-inflammatory hypo-sialylated T-antigen glycans and low levels of the …

A Chemical Study Of Archaeometallurgical Ceramics From Southwestern Tanzania, Edwinus Lyaya
Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)
Archaeometallurgical ceramics, including furnaces, tuyères, and potteries, were required for successful pre-industrial iron smelting and refining. However, there are limited chemical studies on archaeometallurgical ceramics in Tanzania. This paper examined the nature of clay source in terms of refractoriness, determined whether there were multiple clay sources, and verified the refractoriness of the archaeometallurgical ceramics. An x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analytical technique and experimental re-firing of the archaeometallurgical ceramics were employed. The chemical data clustered in the mullite region on the Al2O3-SiO2-FeO ternary system indicate that iron smelters and refiners chose refractory clay sources for making archaeometallurgical ceramics. Small range and standard …

Angiogenic Supports For Microvascular Engineering, Zain Siddiqui
Angiogenic Supports For Microvascular Engineering, Zain Siddiqui
Dissertations
Ischemic tissue disease is caused by a lack of circulation / blood supply to tissue. This can be treated by introducing a number of angiogenic (pro-blood vessel forming) factors into the tissue. This work presents strategies for ischemic tissue treatment utilizing a novel proangiogenic self-assembling peptide hydrogel platform. To demonstrate the utility of this platform, its use alone as an angiogenic therapeutic (both alone as a self-assembling hydrogel and with two-component systems), and its ability to vascularize implants is explored. Due to these angiogenic scaffolds demonstrating efficacy to regenerate microvasculature, this work evaluates diseases that can be treated by the …
