Trypanosome Infection Disturbs The Gut Microbiota Of Bumble Bee Hosts, Bryan Sierra-Rivera
Trypanosome Infection Disturbs The Gut Microbiota Of Bumble Bee Hosts, Bryan Sierra-Rivera
Theses and Dissertations
Host-microbe interactions are ubiquitous with both positive and negative outcomes for host health and fitness. While pathogens abound, there has been an increased focus beneficial host-microbial community associations, such as native gut microbiota that can aid in disease resistance, nutrient sequestration, and detoxification. However, while beneficial microbes can protect against infection, there is a limited appreciation for how pathogen infection may disrupt healthy gut microbiota structure and function. Crithidia bombi is a common trypanosomatid gut parasite of bumble bees with fitness-relevant effects on individuals and colonies. The native bumble bee gut microbiota has been shown to increase protection against Crithidia, …

Among renewable and sustainable energy resources, biomass plays a vital role. Agricultural residues/wastes, energy crops, and lignocellulosic biomass could potentially be major feedstocks for biorefineries. In Thailand, one of the most interesting energy crops is hybrid giant Juncao grass (GJG) or Pennisetum purpureum × Pennisetum typhoideum. GJG can be easily grown and has relatively high yields under tropical climates. Herein, conversion of GJG to biofuels via hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) was investigated using batch reactors under varying reaction temperatures of 250–350 ◦C and biomass-to-deionized water concentrations of 15–25 wt% at a fixed residence time of 30 min. Changes in temperature and …

Prior to 2009, South Texas was essentially an archaeological tabula rasa, largely unknown in the academic, public, or grey literature due to its location far from research universities, the state historic preservation office, and cultural resource management firms. Here, we relate how a consortium of anthropologists and archaeologists, biologists, historians, geologists, and geoarchaeologists have embraced a locally focused, place-based STEAM research approach to tell the story of a largely unknown region of the United States and make it accessible to K–17 educators,1 the public, and scholars with bilingual maps, books, exhibits, films, traveling trunks, and scholarly publications. The efforts …

A Microbiological Assay Of Common Operating Room (Or) Tapes: Developing A Culture For Patient Safety, Gaurav Chauhan, Aman Upadhyay, Samvid Dwivedi, Robert J. Tibbetts, Suresh K. Srinivasan
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Articles
BACKGROUND: There are no existing practices or methods to ensure cleanliness, sterility, or prevent cross-contamination when it comes to common operating room (OR) tape. The authors hypothesized that adhesive tapes used by anesthesia providers in ORs and off-site surgical areas might be colonized by microorganisms and that culturing these tape rolls would reveal significant monomicrobial and polymicrobial contamination.
Material and Methods: The primary objective of this observational cohort study was to report and compare contamination rate including polymicrobial contamination rate between tape specimens collected from storage site and specimen from the ORs, off-sites, and after use on a patient. The …

Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy And Cortical Biopsy In Patients With Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus, George W. Koutsouras, Emma Steinmetz, Michael Tichenor, Brianna Schmidt, Y. S. Mohan, Satish Krishnamurthy
Neurosurgery Articles
Introduction: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) has conventionally been treated by placement of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. However, it can also be treated with a less invasive technique, an endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV). Unfortunately, there is a lack of evidence on the characteristics of NPH patients who are most likely to benefit from ETV. This study seeks to identify if patients at risk of dementia with NPH should be candidates for an ETV.
Methodology: Thirty-six NPH patients who underwent ETV at two institutions between July 2007 and December 2014 were pre-surgically assessed for various risk factors. At the time of ETV, a …

Neogene plains around the Mediterranean basin are characterized by considerable groundwater salinization. Some studies have misidentified seawater intrusion as the main source of salinity. Across northern Morocco, we gathered δ18OSO4 and δ34SSO4 data from coastal and inland aquifers, Messinian marls, and volcanic products. Differences in the isotopic composition between Messinian marls and some groundwater in all aquifer samples indicate that salinization in groundwater is a consequence of dissolution of Messinian evaporite deposits; nevertheless, modern agriculture and wastewater strongly influence depletion in levels of δ34SSO4. Our novel approach enables effective investigation of processes governing salinity …

Greater Houston Area Bottlenose Dolphin Data Gaps, Crrc
Coastal Response Research Center
On February 15 & 16, 2022, CRRC and NOAA ARD co-sponsored a virtual workshop entitled “Greater Houston Area Bottlenose Dolphin Data Gaps.” The workshop addressed data needs, distribution, health, and challenges of these dolphin stocks and how this information could support potential future Natural Resource Damage Assessments (NRDAs) in the region. The two-day workshop included plenary presentations in which federal, state, and local representatives outlined: dolphin distribution demographics, and fecundity; and health (live animal studies, strandings, unusual mortality events (UMEs)). Threats to the animals were also discussed, including contamination (mercury, land-based emerging contaminants of concern, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), persistent …

Navigating The Non-Fungible Token, Kimberly A. Houser, John T. Holden
Utah Law Review
$91.8 million, $69 million, and $52.7 million. These are the amounts associated with the three most sought after Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) sold in 2021. Although NFTs were first created in 2014, 2021 saw a massive rise in their global popularity. In fact, Google reported that in 2021, “How to buy an NFT?” was one of its most searched questions.
NFTs can alternatively represent a collectible, a financial instrument, or a permanent record associated with a person, physical or digital object, or data—each presenting an entirely distinct set of legal issues. The lack of governmental expertise in emerging technologies accompanied by …
The Court’S Gerrymandering Conundrum: How Hyper-Partisanship In Politics Alters The Rucho Decision, Vince Mancini
The Court’S Gerrymandering Conundrum: How Hyper-Partisanship In Politics Alters The Rucho Decision, Vince Mancini
Utah Law Review
The Supreme Court’s recent decision in Rucho v. Common Cause was the latest in a line of opinions regarding reviewability of gerrymandering claims related to the constitutionally required decennial state redistricting process. In Rucho, the Court altered the course of future electoral processes and held that partisan gerrymandering claims were nonjusticiable. In doing so, the Court failed to consider obvious pitfalls in limiting the type of review available for these gerrymandering claims. In particular, the Court failed to understand the gravity of the impact such a decision would have on minority voting power and discarded one of the few structural …
Snapshots Of Coastal Ecology During Glacial And Deglacial Intervals: A Multiproxy Assessment Of Northern Gulf Of Mexico Sediment Cores, Kendall Emilie Brome
Snapshots Of Coastal Ecology During Glacial And Deglacial Intervals: A Multiproxy Assessment Of Northern Gulf Of Mexico Sediment Cores, Kendall Emilie Brome
LSU Master's Theses
Terrestrial ecosystems along exposed continental shelves during times of relatively low sea level and glaciation are rarely preserved due to the mechanically erosive nature of marine transgression and regression. In this study, I investigate the geochemical and palynological characteristics of two well-preserved sites in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGOM) to determine the ecologic settings and subsequent mechanisms of preservation in this region. Both sites contain preserved terrigenous sediments of previously exposed coastal margins; the first is located at the Alabama Underwater Forest (~13 km south of Gulf Shores, AL, at ~15 mbsl), and optically stimulated luminescence dates to 72–56 …

Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements
Disability Representation In Media: More Than Just The Character, Antony Clements
Postgraduate
The representation of disability in creative media is problematic. There have been several tests proposed that analyse disability representation within a media text, in an attempt to determine if a media text represents disability appropriately. In this thesis, I discuss several existing tests of disability representation within media texts, identifying problems in each. I propose a new test for disability representation to address these problems. I then apply the test described in this thesis to media texts within the spheres of film, television, fictional literature, comics and games. Using the qualitative method of autoethnography combined with discourse analysis, I will …
Polymer Mimetics For Soil Modeling And Detection Of Biomarkers, Md Ragib Hasan
Polymer Mimetics For Soil Modeling And Detection Of Biomarkers, Md Ragib Hasan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The population of the world is increasing day by day and is expected to reach 9.8 billion by the year 2050. The ever-increasing demand for agricultural products is putting an unprecedented strain on the world's soils as the human population continues to expand. Soil degradation caused by over-farming and the agrochemicals (fertilizers, pesticides, etc.) used in agriculture is a growing problem, although its causes remain murky. In addition, little is understood about the molecular-level interactions of substances that are subsequently introduced to soils, such as agricultural chemicals (ACs). Therefore, it is expected that these constraints may be circumvented by the …
Police Reform Through Section 1983, Adam J. Smith
Police Reform Through Section 1983, Adam J. Smith
Northern Illinois University Law Review
For decades, members of the Chicago Police Department (CPD) engaged in a protracted campaign of corruption, terror, and violence against Black and brown Chicagoans. Intermittent efforts to reform or otherwise rein in the CPD invariably fell short. In late 2014, a CPD officer murdered a 17-year-old Chicagoan, Laquan McDonald. CPD officials and city leaders attempted to whitewash the killing as a justified use of deadly force, but—thanks to the work of local organizers and a national pressure campaign—McDonald’s death instead led to a yearlong investigation by the federal Department of Justice (DOJ). Ordinarily, such an investigation would have resulted in …

Higher Education institutions in the UAE are increasingly adopting English as a Medium of Instruction. For native Arabic speakers, this educational practice has established a lingual impasse that relegates entry and serves as a signifier of ability. This study explores the experiential and emotional histories of conducting academic studying in a second language. The study is grounded in the theoretical framework of Emotions, whereby the exploration of affect and emotion-specifiers on bilinguals within the EMI in HE experiences and identified. The study applied an Exploratory Sequential Mixed method design led by Qualitative semi-structured interviews with Ph.D. students (n=11). This framework …

Performing Dalit Feminist Youth Activism In South India: Rap, Gaana, And Street Theater, Pramila Venkateswaran
Performing Dalit Feminist Youth Activism In South India: Rap, Gaana, And Street Theater, Pramila Venkateswaran
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
Young Dalit men and women are changing the narrative of casteist oppression in India. Youth activists perform protest songs in the genre of rap and gaana, using elements of slam poetry and rap from African American artists and blending them with local musical innovations. The performances have deliberate messaging, signaling particular caste and gender injustices, both current and historical. This paper will analyze Dalit youth performances of rap, gaana, and street theater (koothu) in South India, particularly in Tamil Nadu, to understand the poetics of protest against caste and gender oppression. It will look at the notion of space in …

All Open Educational Resources
This book is designed to facilitate understanding of education research and guide the development and the writing of a research project. In education, like other social sciences, we are investigating issues directly involving or influencing humans. Research involving humans can be a complex and awkward endeavor. However, if we view this endeavor through the lens of a research story, we find a familiar genre we can relate to and understand. This concise, open textbook weaves the story of a cat throughout to explain the research components of typical education research projects.

The Womb In Labour: Representing The Woman’S Body As An Active Vessel In Hildegard Of Bingen’S Cause Et Cure, Minji Lee
Department of Religion Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Hildegard of Bingen was a German nun who wrote medical treatises in the Middle Ages that interpreted the female body as a positive and purifying agent of God’s creation and salvation at a time when negative connotations of female physicality prevailed in medicine. In particular, she described the female body as an active vessel, in opposition to the predominant image of the female body as passive. Her explanations of conception, pregnancy and childbirth in her medical book Cause et Cure represent the female body as actively advancing, nourishing, purifying and caring for future generations in the form of the baby, …

“Fiery Sparks Of Change”: A Comparison Between First Wave Feminists Of India And The U.S., Shoba Sharad Rajgopal
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
The celebration of the centenary of the 19th Amendment in 2020 has seen the resurgence of interest in the struggles of the Suffragette/Suffragist movement. This article examines the representation of first wave feminism in the developing world, with a focus on the Indian Subcontinent, from a postcolonial feminist perspective. As such, it critiques the colonialist perspective regarding women's movements of resistance in the developing world and links it to the critique of racism within the women's movements in the West. It discusses early feminists from India such as Tarabai Shinde whose spirited exposé of the double standards women were subjected …
