Writing: The Lost Literacy… Found!, Tahlya Stevenson
Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy
According to the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP, 2012), writing proficiency across the country has been stagnant for the past generation. This “writing crisis” has the potential to impact job preparedness, reading development, and the future of our nation’s students. Additionally, teachers are ill-prepared with the knowledge and time to best teach writing. The purpose of this study was to identify best practices in elementary narrative writing and to explore the effectiveness of implementation in a grade 2 classroom. Experts agree that process writing, use of mentor text, explicit instruction in text structure, and peer feedback increase student writing …

Music Therapy Pre-Internship Education And Training: Support For A Methods-Based Approach, Susan Gardstrom, Annie Heiderscheit, James Hiller, Nancy Jackson
Faculty Authored Articles
In this article, we advance our support for a methods-based approach to music therapy undergraduate education and training. We review the population-based approach upon which the profession was founded in the United States and that continues to be emphasized in many degree programs across the country. Next, we explain the nature of a methods-based approach, in which students consistently and authentically engage in the four music therapy methods (Bruscia, 2014) as their predominant means of understanding clinical practice. Lastly, we highlight certain limitations of the population-based perspective and advance certain benefits of the methods-based perspective. We claim that the latter …

The Duty Not To Continue Distributing Your Own Libels, Eugene Volokh
The Duty Not To Continue Distributing Your Own Libels, Eugene Volokh
Notre Dame Law Review
Say something I wrote about you online (in a newspaper, a blog, or a social media page) turns out to be false and defamatory. Assume I wasn’t culpable when I first posted it, but now I’m on notice of the error.
Am I liable for defamation if I fail to remove or correct the erroneous material? Surprisingly, courts haven’t settled on an answer, and scholars haven’t focused on the question. Libel law is stuck in a time when newspapers left the publisher’s control as soon as they are printed—even though now an article or a post can be seen on …

The effects of drill and broadcast planting methods on cover crop biomass production depend on various environmental and operational factors. We investigated whether drilling and broadcasting result in different amounts of biomass production by crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.) and hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) in the upstate of South Carolina, and results vary when seeding rates are increased by 50% from the standard value (22.4 kg ha−1). Field trials were conducted during the fall–winter of 2019–2020 (season one) and 2020–2021 (season two) at the Piedmont Research and Education Center in Pendleton, SC, USA. Cover crop (hairy vetch, crimson clover), …
Warming And Labile Substrate Addition Alter Enzyme Activities And Composition Of Soil Organic Carbon, Mioko Tamura, Vidya Suseela
Warming And Labile Substrate Addition Alter Enzyme Activities And Composition Of Soil Organic Carbon, Mioko Tamura, Vidya Suseela
Open Access Publishing Fund
Warming can increase the efflux of carbon dioxide (CO2) from soils and can potentially feedback to climate change. In ajout to warming, the input of labile carbon can enhance the microbial activity by stimulating the co-metabolism of recalcitrant soil organic matter (SOM). This is particularly true with SOM under invaded ecosystems where elevated CO2 and warming may increase the biomass of invasive species resulting in higher addition of labile substrates. We hypothesized that the input of labile carbon would instigate a greater soil organic carbon (SOC) loss with warming compared to the ambient température. We investigated this by incubating soils …

The state of Rhode Island (RI) has established its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals, which require rapidly acquired and updatable science-based data to make these goals enforceable and effective. The combination of remote sensing and soil information data can estimate the past and model future GHG emissions because of conversion of “low disturbance” land covers (e.g., evergreen forest, hay/pasture) to “high disturbance” land covers (e.g., low-, medium-, and high-intensity developed land). These modeled future emissions can be used as a predevelopment potential GHG emissions information disclosure. This study demonstrates the rapid assessment of the value of regulating ecosystems services …

Whose Turn Now? The Enactment & Expansion Of Private School Choice Programs Across The Us, Yujie Sude, Patrick Wolf
School Choice Demonstration Project
Private school choice policies have been enacted and expanded across the United States since the 1990s. By January 2021, 30 states plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico hosted 67 distinct private school choice policies. Why have some states adopted and expanded this education reform while others have demurred? Which states are more likely to adopt specific types of private school choice initiatives in the coming years? We present the results of an exploratory empirical analysis examining which state-level political, economic, and educational factors predict past policy decisions regarding the enactment and expansion of private school choice in 49 …

The Critical Need For Peer Clinical Supervision Among School Counselors, Pamelia E. Brott, Lorraine Dekruyf, Jung H. Hyun, Christopher R. Lafever, Sarah Patterson-Mills, Miriama I. Cook Sandifer, Victoria Stone
Faculty Publications - Graduate School of Counseling
The ongoing need for clinical supervision of practicing school counselors in the United States has reached a critical point. Given the acute mental health needs of children and adolescents, staggering caseloads, and pandemic repercussions, school counselors often receive insufficient clinical support. Clinical supervision is necessary to safeguard against burnout, promote ethical practice, and encourage continual skill development for school counselors worldwide. Unfortunately, there remains a lack of available clinical supervision, trained supervisors, and practice-based strategies for providing consistent quality supervision for post-master’s school counselors. The authors present a rationale for peer clinical supervision of practicing school counselors in the United …

Rotating cereal crops (e.g., wheat [Triticum aestivum L.] with a 10- to 21-mo summer fallow period [fallow]) is a common farming practice in dryland (rainfed) agricultural regions. Fallow is associated with several challenges including low precipitation storage efficiency, depletion of soil organic carbon (SOC), loss of soil fertility, little crop residue retention and soil erosion, and few control options for herbicide-resistant (HR) weeds. The inability to effectively control HR weeds poses a major challenge to maintaining soil and water conservation practices such as no-tillage, as some producers are considering tillage to control weeds. Cover crop (CC) integration into wheat-based …

Kshv Susceptibility And Transmission Within Tonsillar Specimens, Farizeh Aalam
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PhD) Dissertations
Despite nearly three decades of research, not much is known regarding the early stages of development for KSHV lymphoproliferative disorders, hindering our ability to develop prophylactic measures or effective treatments. This dissertation will focus on the host and viral factors influencing the magnitude and dynamics of KSHV infection in the human tonsil to pave the way for future interventions directed at limiting person-to-person transmission of KSHV.
To understand the contribution of host factors to KSHV susceptibility in B lymphocytes, we generated a library of 40 tonsillar specimens. Our results indicate that the immunological composition of tonsillar lymphocytes varies across our …
Relationships Among Mentoring Support And Student Success In A Chinese First-Year Experience Program, Tianxiang Liu
Relationships Among Mentoring Support And Student Success In A Chinese First-Year Experience Program, Tianxiang Liu
Education (PhD) Dissertations
China’s higher education reform led to the rise of private universities leading to a surge in the number of private universities, which have lacked funds and resources compared to their public peers. While private universities have allowed for expanded access to higher education, quite a few students have not been well prepared for study at this level. Therefore, private colleges in China need to provide more resources for students to help them succeed. Western countries, with more robust histories of private higher education, adopted the strategy of peer mentoring to solve the problem of first-year students’ retention, which guided significance …
Learning Orbital Dynamics Of Binary Black Hole Systems From Gravitational Wave Measurements, Brendan Keith, Akshay Khadse, Scott E. Field
Learning Orbital Dynamics Of Binary Black Hole Systems From Gravitational Wave Measurements, Brendan Keith, Akshay Khadse, Scott E. Field
Faculty and Student Publications
We introduce a gravitational waveform inversion strategy that discovers mechanical models of binary black hole (BBH) systems. We show that only a single time series of (possibly noisy) waveform data is necessary to construct the equations of motion for a BBH system. Starting with a class of universal differential equations parameterized by feed-forward neural networks, our strategy involves the construction of a space of plausible mechanical models and a physics-informed constrained optimization within that space to minimize the waveform error. We apply our method to various BBH systems including extreme and comparable mass ratio systems in eccentric and noneccentric orbits. …

The oomycete Aphanomyces astaci is an emerging infectious pathogen affecting freshwater crayfish worldwide and is responsible for one of the most severe wildlife pandemics ever reported. The pathogen has caused mass mortalities of freshwater crayfish species in Europe and Asia, and threatens other susceptible species in Madagascar, Oceania and South America. The pathogen naturally coexists with some North American crayfish species that are its chronic carriers. Presumptions that A. astaci originated in North America are based on disease outbreaks that followed translocations of North American crayfish and on the identification of the pathogen mainly in Europe. We studied A. astaci …
