‘It’S Not Over Yet!’: Workplace Experiences Of Lesbian Public School Teachers, Deb Martin

College of Education Departmental Research

This qualitative study explores the workplace experiences of 12 lesbian public school teachers in Southern New Jersey. Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, teachers discuss the tensions, contradictions, rewards, and challenges of teaching at this unique historical moment when laws, policies, social practices, and attitudes are in flux. Queer theory guided the development of the study and provides the primary analytical lens for examining and interpreting data. Findings cluster around the following interrelated themes: 1) queer teachable moments; 2) being ‘that’ teacher; 3) self-disclosure, and 4) It’s not over yet. Findings provide insight into what lesbian teachers are saying about their experiences, …

The Relationship Between Witnessing Bullying, Defending Targets, And Internalizing Symptoms: An Analysis Of Gender Differences Among Sixth-Grade Students, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas, Matt Peck, Amanda Winburn

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

We examined the moderating effect of gender on witnessing bullying, defending, and internalizing symptoms among sixth-grade students at one middle school in the northwestern United States. Results indicated that for females, witnessing bullying was positively associated with depressive symptoms and social anxiety, whereas for males, defending was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Findings suggest the importance of equipping female students with strategies to cope with witnessing bullying and providing male students with appropriate intervention skills for defending targets.

Case Study Of Byzantium, Shelby Johnson Dec 2021

Case Study Of Byzantium, Shelby Johnson

BYZANTIUM: Trade, Treasure, Tradition

The Byzantine Empire (395-1453 CE) was a large cultural center that included a meshing of different societies in terms of trade. Located along the Mediterranean Sea, the empire had a monopoly of sea trade, leading to their multiple years of success under many different ruling emperors. Many different countries brought with them pieces of their culture and textile materials to the Byzantine Empire.

Around 500 A.D. China was known for their silk making textiles, holding the secret of their creation for many years until a group of traveling monks in Europe were able to smuggle out silkworm eggs from China, …

Las Montañas, Peyton Streiff

Microrrelatos (Flash Fiction) Collection

Multi-Type Assessment Of Global Droughts And Teleconnections, Zahir Nikraftar, Abdorrahman Mostafaie, Mojtaba Sadegh, Javad Hatami Afkueieh, Biswajeet Pradhan Dec 2021

Multi-Type Assessment Of Global Droughts And Teleconnections, Zahir Nikraftar, Abdorrahman Mostafaie, Mojtaba Sadegh, Javad Hatami Afkueieh, Biswajeet Pradhan

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Several drought indices have been developed based on various processes (e.g., precipitation, soil moisture, vegetation health) that respond differently to modes of climate variability, shadowing their relatability to teleconnections, which in turn, limits drought forecasting. In this study, we advanced the multivariate analysis of droughts by using long-term Terrestrial Water Storage estimates, soil moisture and precipitation data along with normalized difference vegetation index. To this end, we employed a Vine copula approach using Archimedean and Elliptical copula families to generate two novel multivariate drought indices called Combined Standardized Drought Index (CSDI), based on agricultural, meteorological, hydrological and ecological univariate indices …

Quantum State Estimation And Tracking For Superconducting Processors Using Machine Learning, Shiva Lotfallahzadeh Barzili Dec 2021

Quantum State Estimation And Tracking For Superconducting Processors Using Machine Learning, Shiva Lotfallahzadeh Barzili

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Quantum technology has been rapidly growing; in particular, the experiments that have been performed with superconducting qubits and circuit QED have allowed us to explore the light-matter interaction at its most fundamental level. The study of coherent dynamics between two-level systems and resonator modes can provide insight into fundamental aspects of quantum physics, such as how the state of a system evolves while being continuously observed. To study such an evolving quantum system, experimenters need to verify the accuracy of state preparation and control since quantum systems are very fragile and sensitive to environmental disturbance. In this thesis, I look …

Nos Non Abolere Ordo Lectionum: The History Of The Historic Lectionary As Retained By The Lutheran Church, Conner E. Walts

University Honors College

The history of the Historic Lectionary from a Lutheran perspective provided great insight into its development and retention in the 21st century. This paper reviews the long history of the Historic Lectionary, previously the lectionary of the Western church, and compares its value in light of recent lectionary developments. This study reveals a Lutheran perspective in light of the lectionary debate in the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod and succinctly sets forth centuries of lectionary history in the West.

Agency And Health Policies, Rodrigo Lopez Barreda Dec 2021

Agency And Health Policies, Rodrigo Lopez Barreda

Journal of Health Ethics

In the current medical ethics literature, the concept of agency is receiving growing attention. Nevertheless, many of those definitions are narrow in scope. This article intends to provide a deeper understanding of this concept, allowing for its use in clinical practice and public health policies. First, it revises the current concept of agency and some of its shortcomings. Then, the article presents two philosophical accounts of agency, identifying three relevant features, namely time-extended organised planfulness, endorsement of their own actions, and identification with the activity. Lastly, the article depicts how those features may help in the application of agency …

Including A Chaplain And Culturally Sensitive Notary In End-Of-Life And Earlier Difficult Healthcare Issues, John Stonestreet

Journal of Health Ethics

Would patients and families benefit from a Doctor Body Cam? Linked from www.DoctorBodyCam.com, this article explores innovations providing accountability for ethical communication surrounding major healthcare decisions. One of the greatest challenges physicians face is living up to their own ideals, let alone others’ expectations, for high-stakes doctor-patient/family communication, especially at the end of life. From emotional strains to time limitations, a multiplicity of factors obfuscates the pursuit of excellence in this vital endeavor. Evidence suggests that, like nearly every other sector of healthcare and society, African American patients and families are most likely to get the short end of the …

Nanoceria Potently Reduce Superoxide Fluxes From Mitochondrial Electron Transport Chain And Plasma Membrane Nadph Oxidase In Human Macrophages, Y R. Li, Hong Zhu Dec 2021

Nanoceria Potently Reduce Superoxide Fluxes From Mitochondrial Electron Transport Chain And Plasma Membrane Nadph Oxidase In Human Macrophages, Y R. Li, Hong Zhu

Osteopathic Medicine, Jerry M. Wallace School of

Cerium oxide nanoparticles, also known as nanoceria, possess antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities in animal models of inflammatory disorders, such as sepsis. However, it remains unclear how nanoceria affect cellular superoxide fluxes in macrophages, a critical type of cells involved in inflammatory disorders. Using human ML-1 cell-derived macrophages, we showed that nanoceria at 1-100 μg/ml potently reduced superoxide flux from the mitochondrial electron transport chain (METC) in a concentration-dependent manner. The inhibitory effects of nanoceria were also shown in succinate-driven mitochondria isolated from the macrophages. Furthermore, nanoceria markedly mitigated the total intracellular superoxide flux in the macrophages. These data suggest that …

(R1505) A Note On Large Deviations In Insurance Risk, Stefan Gerhold Dec 2021

(R1505) A Note On Large Deviations In Insurance Risk, Stefan Gerhold

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We study large and moderate deviations for an insurance portfolio, with the number of claims tending to infinity, without assuming identically distributed claims. The crucial assumption is that the centered claims are bounded, and that variances are bounded below. From a general large deviations upper bound, we obtain an exponential bound for the probability of the average loss exceeding a threshold. A counterexample shows that a full large deviation principle, including also a lower bound, does not follow from our assumptions. We argue that our assumptions make sense, in particular, for life insurance portfolios and discuss how to apply our …

Architecture Thesis Prep

According to the introduction:

Vacant spaces are the non-utilized or underutilized lands due to their parcel shape, size, or geographic location. These vacant lands are often associated with illegal dumping of construction and general waste due to avoidance of refuse collection fee payments, leading to social, environmental, and financial risks. With the rise in illegal dumping over the years, we aim to address this problem at the avoidance, minimization, and recovery level of waste management.

Writing: The Lost Literacy… Found!, Tahlya Stevenson

Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Literacy

According to the National Assessment for Educational Progress (NAEP, 2012), writing proficiency across the country has been stagnant for the past generation. This “writing crisis” has the potential to impact job preparedness, reading development, and the future of our nation’s students. Additionally, teachers are ill-prepared with the knowledge and time to best teach writing. The purpose of this study was to identify best practices in elementary narrative writing and to explore the effectiveness of implementation in a grade 2 classroom. Experts agree that process writing, use of mentor text, explicit instruction in text structure, and peer feedback increase student writing …
