Past As Prologue: Intercept & Surveillance Rules Under Hong Kong’S National Security Law, Hargreaves, Stuart Dec 2021

Past As Prologue: Intercept & Surveillance Rules Under Hong Kong’S National Security Law, Hargreaves, Stuart

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

In response to civil unrest in 2019, in 2020 Beijing directly applied a new National Security Law to Hong Kong. Part of this law established a new system of rules for the authorisation of communications intercepts and covert surveillance in the context of certain national security offences. Interestingly, this new scheme looks in many ways like a prior system that was deemed unconstitutional by a Hong Kong court in 2006: it centralizes authorization authority in the executive branch and there is little external oversight of the process. This paper argues that the new system of rules regarding covert surveillance of …

Assessing Acceptability Of Covid-19 Vaccine Booster Dose Among Adult Americans: A Cross-Sectional Study, Tesfaye Yadete, Kavita Batra, Dale M. Netski, Sabrina Antonio, Michael J. Patros, Johan C. Bester

School of Medicine Faculty Research

Given the emergence of breakthrough infections, new variants, and concerns of waning immunity from the primary COVID-19 vaccines, booster shots emerged as a viable option to shore-up protection against COVID-19. Following the recent authorization of vaccine boosters among vulnerable Americans, this study aims to assess COVID-19 vaccine booster hesitancy and its associated factors in a nationally representative sample. A web-based 48-item psychometric valid survey was used to measure vaccine literacy, vaccine confidence, trust, and general attitudes towards vaccines. Data were analyzed through Chi-square (with a post hoc contingency table analysis) and independent-sample t-/Welch tests. Among 2138 participants, nearly 62% intended …

Above- And Below-Ground Functional Trait Coordination In The Neotropical Understory Genus Costus, Eleinis Ávila-Lovera, Gregory R. Goldsmith, Kathleen M. Kay, Jennifer L. Funk

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

The study of plant functional traits and variation among and within species can help illuminate functional coordination and trade-offs in key processes that allow plants to grow, reproduce and survive. We studied 20 leaf, above-ground stem, below-ground stem and fine-root traits of 17 Costus species from forests in Costa Rica and Panama to answer the following questions: (i) Do congeneric species show above-ground and below-ground trait coordination and trade-offs consistent with theory of resource acquisition and conservation? (ii) Is there correlated evolution among traits? (iii) Given the diversity of habitats over which Costus occurs, what is the relative contribution of …

Understanding The Undergraduate Experience Of The Baccalaureate Nursing Student With English As An Additional Language, Dolores R. Dzubaty Dec 2021

Understanding The Undergraduate Experience Of The Baccalaureate Nursing Student With English As An Additional Language, Dolores R. Dzubaty

Dissertations

Disparities exist in healthcare related to language barriers and lack of cultural understanding between caregivers and recipients. Increasing the linguistic and cultural diversity of caregivers may decrease the healthcare disparities observed. The research study described in this manuscript was conducted to explore the undergraduate student experiences of nurses representing multiple cultural groups, speaking multiple languages, and representing a cross section of the population of interest. The challenge of speaking English as an additional language (EAL) and belonging to differing cultural groups presents difficulties while successfully completing a baccalaureate nursing program of study. The Theory of Margin was the theoretical framework …

Chemical And Physical Weathering Rates Of Basaltic Volcanic Regions: Utilizing Space In Place Of Time In The Hawaiian Archipelago, Benjamin Clyde Barton Dec 2021

Chemical And Physical Weathering Rates Of Basaltic Volcanic Regions: Utilizing Space In Place Of Time In The Hawaiian Archipelago, Benjamin Clyde Barton

Theses and Dissertations

With large populations living in tropical regions of the world with volcanic substrates, understanding basalt weathering processes is vital. The Hawaiian Islands are an excellent natural analogue to study chemical weathering rates due to a uniform bedrock (basalt), large variations in rainfall, and varying ages across the islands. Laterite weathering profiles (LWP) develop over time through chemical weathering, where LWP thickness is influenced by many factors, including precipitation and time. Using the rapid, non-invasive horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) method, LWP thicknesses can be estimated to constrain chemical weathering rates. Studying the laterite weathering profiles developed from basaltic bedrock of varying …

Trans Inclusion Through Name Change Policies In Institutional Repositories, Stephen G. Krueger Dec 2021

Trans Inclusion Through Name Change Policies In Institutional Repositories, Stephen G. Krueger

Dartmouth Library Staff Publications

As awareness and acceptance of trans and gender diverse people grows, scholarly publishing has seen a movement to support trans authors through inclusive name change policies. This work mainly happens through trans scholars approaching publishers and requesting these changes. Sometimes this results in a new policy that supports the authors and protects them from being outed to co-authors and readers; other times, the policies are less than ideal or do not change at all. While most of the focus is on publishers and organizations, institutional repositories can and should take similar steps to respect and protect their trans authors. This …

Force-Feedback Design For Robotics: Bio-Based Design And Simulation, Husnain Khan, Zhou Zhang Dec 2021

Force-Feedback Design For Robotics: Bio-Based Design And Simulation, Husnain Khan, Zhou Zhang

Publications and Research

The great challenge for the Virtual Assembly Platform is how to make the users have the in-person feeling with the augmented tools. Hands are the most important organs that are used to provide touch feeling. In a real assembly scenario, the force from the components and tools will be feedback to the brain via the hands. Unfortunately, the virtual assembly failed to mimic the in-person scenarios since it will not provide such kind of feedback. As a result, the users’ real identities are lost. Then, the users’ slower-progressing wrong habits will prevent them from success in the future. Therefore, it …

French In Culinary And Pastry Arts, Elaine Suarez Dec 2021

French In Culinary And Pastry Arts, Elaine Suarez

Publications and Research

The purpose of this project was to find out the impact of the French jargon used in the culinary and pastry industry and its origin. I investigated this topic through reading online articles that were based on the research of others. I found out that after the French Revolution, the French language as well as its culture was influenced many parts of Europe. Prior to that, other cultures influenced Europe, but regarding cooking, French was the one that stuck around to this day. It was shocking to hear those other cultures like Italian and German had a large impact on …

Publications and Research

The purpose of this research is to perform a meta-analysis on inflammation, fracture and bone repair mechanisms in the presence of surgical implants as practiced by tissue engineering and materials science today. Inflammation is the human body's natural response to an injury that activates the immune system and sends out inflammatory cells. The result is usually pain, swelling, bruising or redness. Inflammation also affects our body and often difficult to detect by routine diagnostic imaging. An X-ray exam, often followed by CT, can map the nature and extent of the fracture and help guide surgery for internal fixation of orthopedic …

Isolated States Of America: The Impact Of State Borders On Mobility And Regional Labor Market Adjustments, Riley Wilson Dec 2021

Isolated States Of America: The Impact Of State Borders On Mobility And Regional Labor Market Adjustments, Riley Wilson

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

I document a new empirical pattern of internal mobility in the United States. Namely, county-to-county migration and commuting drop off discretely at state borders. People are three times as likely to move to a county 15 miles away, but in the same state, than to move to an equally distant county in a different state. These gaps remain even among neighboring counties or counties in the same commuting zone. This pattern is not explained by differences in county characteristics, is not driven by any particular demographic group, and is not explained by pecuniary costs such as differences in state occupational …

Evidence For Surface Effects On The Intermolecular Interactions In Fe (Ii) Spin Crossover Coordination Polymers, Thilini K. Ekanayaka, Hannah Kurz, Kayleigh A. Mcelveen, Guanhua Hao, Esha Mishra, Alpha T. N’Diaye, Rebecca Lai, Birgit Weber, Peter A. Dowben

Department of Physics and Astronomy: Faculty Publications

From X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) it is evident that the spin state transition behavior of Fe(II) spin crossover coordination polymer crystallites at the surface differs from the bulk. A comparison of four different coordination polymers reveals that the observed surface properties may differ from bulk for a variety of reasons. There are Fe(II) spin crossover coordination polymers with either almost complete switching of the spin state at the surface or no switching at all. Oxidation, differences in surface packing, and changes in coordination could all contribute to making the surface very different from the bulk. …

Posttraumatic osteoarthritis of the ankle and hindfoot is a common and frequently debil-itating disorder. 70% to 90% of ankle osteoarthritis is related to prior trauma that encompasses a spectrum of disorders including fractures and ligamentous injuries that either disrupt the articular surface or result in instability of the joint. In addition to clinical evaluation, imaging plays a sub-stantial role in the treatment planning of posttraumatic ankle and hindfoot osteoarthritis. Imaging evaluation must be tailored to specific clinical scenarios and includes weight bearing radiography that utilizes standard and specialty views, computed tomography which can be performed with a standard or a …

The Puzzle Of Soft Law, Lorne Sossin, Chantelle Van Wiltenburg Dec 2021

The Puzzle Of Soft Law, Lorne Sossin, Chantelle Van Wiltenburg

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

Soft law is a puzzle. It shapes a wide range of public decision making, but its contents are said to lie beyond the rule of law. This paper explores the largely uncharted terrain of soft law in Canada. It is organized in three parts. Part I examines the existing treatment of soft law in Canadian jurisprudence, including soft law’s relationship to administrative law concepts such as the standard of reasonableness and the Constitution. Part II proposes the foundations of a new framework to characterize soft law, termed the “spectrum approach.” This approach aims to assist courts in responding to the …

School of Medicine Publications

Pancreatic cancer has the worst prognosis and lowest survival rate among all cancers. Pancreatic cancer cells are highly metabolically active and typically reprogrammed for aberrant glucose metabolism; thus they respond poorly to therapeutic modalities. It is highly imperative to understand mechanisms that are responsible for high glucose metabolism and identify natural/synthetic agents that can repress glucose metabolic machinery in pancreatic cancer cells, to improve the therapeutic outcomes/management of pancreatic cancer patients. We have identified a glycoside, steviol that effectively represses glucose consumption in pancreatic cancer cells via the inhibition of the translation initiation machinery of the molecular components. Herein, we …

An Experimental Campaign To Collect Multiresolution Hyperspectral Data With Ground Truth, Joseph A. Carrock Ii Dec 2021

An Experimental Campaign To Collect Multiresolution Hyperspectral Data With Ground Truth, Joseph A. Carrock Ii

Theses

Advancements in hyperspectral imaging systems, data processing, and collection methods, have allowed for comprehensive spectral assessment of terrestrial objects to assist in a vast array of imaging problems previously deemed too complex. As the field evolves and more research is completed, the boundaries of what is capable are constantly pushed to new thresholds. At this junction, there exists an opportunity for the capabilities of these new creations to exceed our ability to prove their efficiency and efficacy. One area where this is true, is in the assessment of new hyperspectral panchromatic sharpening (HPS) algorithms. This is due to the lack …
