Campus Poetry Walk: (Re)Creating And Reconnecting A Community (Presentation), Lisa Villa

Staff publications

In January 2020, the Outreach and Engagement Team at the College of the Holy Cross began preparing a poetry walk, which was reconfigured to a social media “poetry event” due to COVID-19. With the anticipated return of students to campus for the Spring 2021 semester and a need for the community (especially students) to have recreational opportunities that were safe, socially distanced and preferably outside, the Team attempted for a second time to plan a poetry walk. CrossWorks, the institutional repository for the College, was a part of this plan from the beginning. Foremost, CrossWorks would support the scholarly and …

Learning From Las Vegas: Adapting Workflows For Managing Born-Digital Design Records, Tammi Kim, Karla Irwin

Library Faculty Research

Architecture collections have been a mainstay for Special Collections and Archives at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV SCA), since the late 1970s. Until 2017, most architecture collections in Special Collections and Archives have consisted of physical records. In recent years, curators began acquiring architecture collections with significant born-digital content, which present unique challenges different from other types of born-digital materials. This case study discusses how staff adapted existing workflows for born-digital materials to process and describe two collections comprised of born-digital architecture and design records. The authors also describe how UNLV SCA provides access to proprietary design files …

Accurate fire emissions inventories are crucial to predict the impacts of wildland fires on air quality and atmospheric composition. Two traditional approaches are widely used to calculate fire emissions: a satellite-based top-down approach and a fuels-based bottom-up approach. However, these methods often considerably disagree on the amount of particulate mass emitted from fires. Previously available observational datasets tended to be sparse, and lacked the statistics needed to resolve these methodological discrepancies. Here, we leverage the extensive and comprehensive airborne in situ and remote sensing measurements of smoke plumes from the recent Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air …

Neutron Activation Analysis Of Heavy Elements In The Environment, Le Van La, Vishwas Joshi Dec 2021

Neutron Activation Analysis Of Heavy Elements In The Environment, Le Van La, Vishwas Joshi

Publications and Research

The main focus of the research is: application of neutron activation analysis (NAA) to determine concentration and distribution of heavy metals in environmental samples. Due to human activity and industrialization, heavy metal pollutants have been accumulating in the environment. The heavy metal elements (such as: mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), thallium (Tl), and lead (Pb)) tend to be toxic and their presence in the environment is problematic for plant, animal, and human health. The Neutron activation analysis (NAA) is one of nuclear techniques that has many useful applications such as bio-monitoring, biological analysis, environmental research and materials …

A Strategy For Correcting Errors In Automated Formant Extraction, Lisa M. Johnson Dec 2021

A Strategy For Correcting Errors In Automated Formant Extraction, Lisa M. Johnson

Faculty Publications

Sociophonetic vowel analysis relies heavily on measurements of resonant frequencies, particularly of the first and second formants. Automated formant estimation using linear predictive coding (LPC) algorithms in software like Praat greatly increases efficiency compared to hand measurements and allows researchers to analyze more data than was possible before this technological advancement. However, many authors have noted LPC analysis is prone to certain types of errors (e.g., Di Paolo, Yaeger-Dror, & Wassink, 2011; Harrison, 2013; Labov, Ash, & Boberg, 2006; Strelluf, 2019; Styler, 2017). In one common error, which I call “faulty low F2” (FLF2), LPC identifies a spectral peak between …

Fenkel, Jerald Z. Gong, Pierluigi Porcu

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

T-cell PTLDs are lymphoid proliferations that develop in recipients of SOT or allogeneic HSCT. They carry an extremely poor prognosis with a reported median survival of only 6 months. The infrequency with which they are encountered makes treatment a challenge due to the lack of prospective trials to guide management. The significantly higher risk of morbidity and mortality in T-cell PTLD, compared to B-cell PTLD, underscores the challenge of treating these patients and the need for new therapeutic options. Brentuximab vedotin, an ADC targeting CD30, is FDA-approved in combination with CHP as front-line treatment for patients with CD30 expressing PTCL. …

Video Game To Movie Adaptations: The Role Of Narratives, Owen Amaral Dec 2021

Video Game To Movie Adaptations: The Role Of Narratives, Owen Amaral

Honors Theses - Providence Campus

With the increased presence of video games in the cultural zeitgeist, film producers in both Hollywood and the Japanese market are continuing to create adaptations of games into films. Hollywood, however, has struggled to create critically and commercially successful adaptations, while the Japanese market was able to find a formula that works far sooner. By examining the narrative techniques utilized in film adaptations and their respective source materials, a number of important factors come to light in determining the success of an adaptation. Managing scope, evaluating genre, and determining target markets all play a key role in the success of …

Lookism: An Examination Of Inequality In Appearance Within Diversity Practices, Hynndie Ozirus, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis Dec 2021

Lookism: An Examination Of Inequality In Appearance Within Diversity Practices, Hynndie Ozirus, Alyssa Dana Adomaitis

Publications and Research

During the formation of the United States, much of unification has centered on power and the privileged. This history is often painful to speak on in the communities with people of color. Rhodes (2010) discussed cultural injustices of being unattractive in a society appearance- obsessed with potential for “looks” to influence hiring practices, such as better career options and higher pay. The purpose of this was to investigate the issue of how lookism is defined and studied in the media especially in regards to people of color. The review of literature examines the relationship between income, education, as well as …

Use Of Internet Of Things (Iot) Applications In Modern Library Activities And Services, Jignesh Makwana

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Change is the law of the world and it can take a step towards development, be it in person, institution, or in thing. If the library is known as an institution that serves the community i.e. the university of the people then the library also needs to change over time. The most important inventions of the present time are computers and computer technology, if we talk about this technology in the context of libraries, a new age of computing technology that many people refer to as the Internet of Things (IoT). The present study was conducted with the main objectives …

We present results from a descriptive analysis using publicly available longitudinal data reported by states on rates of UI recipiency and characteristics of UI beneficiaries. Recipiency measures the proportion of all unemployed who are receiving UI benefits. UI is intended to provide temporary, partial income replacement to involuntarily unemployed UI applicants with strong labor force attachments while they are able, available, and actively seeking return to work. Each of these UI eligibility conditions contributes to the UI recipiency rate …

The Evolution Of Blood Flow Restricted Exercise, Eduardo D. S. Freitas, Murat Karabulut, Michael G. Bemben

Health & Human Performance Faculty Publications

The use of blood flow restricted (BFR) exercise has become an accepted alternative approach to improve skeletal muscle mass and function and improve cardiovascular function in individuals that are not able to or do not wish to use traditional exercise protocols that rely on heavy loads and high training volumes. BFR exercise involves the reduction of blood flow to working skeletal muscle by applying a flexible cuff to the most proximal portions of a person's arms or legs that results in decreased arterial flow to the exercising muscle and occluded venous return back to the central circulation. Safety concerns, especially …

Protocol For A Prospective Double-Blind, Randomised, Placebo-Controlled Feasibility Trial Of Octreotide Infusion During Liver Transplantation, Jeremy Fabes, Gareth Ambler, Bina Shah, Norman R. Williams, Daniel Martin, Brian R. Davidson, Michael Spiro

Peninsula Medical School

IntroductionLiver transplantation is a complex operation that can provide significant improvements in quality of life and survival to the recipients. However, serious complications are common and include major haemorrhage, hypotension and renal failure. Blood transfusion and the development of acute kidney injury lead to both short-term and long-term poor patient outcomes, including an increased risk of death, graft failure, length of stay and reduced quality of life. Octreotide may reduce the incidence of renal dysfunction, perioperative haemorrhage and enhance intraoperative blood pressure. However, octreotide does have risks, including resistant bradycardia, hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia and QT prolongation. Hence, a randomised controlled …
