The Evaluation Of Performance Of Spindle Connector And Its Finite Element Analysis, Suhyun Lee Dec 2021

The Evaluation Of Performance Of Spindle Connector And Its Finite Element Analysis, Suhyun Lee

Dissertations and Theses

The rapid development of machining technology and reliable high-speed machining systems has led to a fast operation of machines. However, machining machines cannot still meet modern requirements in terms of the quality of parts, the machine components, and the life of the tools. The major components of the machining system are machine tools, the spindle interfaces (the contact between the spindle and the tool holder), and tools. The choice of the spindle connector is the main decision, as this defines the limitation of the metal cutting efficiency and considerably influences the deformation of the machine tool. Therefore, it is very …

Dangerous Associations: Racializing Urban Communities And The Influence Of One Critical Service-Learning Course To Disrupt Racist Ideological Habits, T.J. Stockton Dec 2021

Dangerous Associations: Racializing Urban Communities And The Influence Of One Critical Service-Learning Course To Disrupt Racist Ideological Habits, T.J. Stockton

Peer Reviewed Articles

This study examined pre-service teachers’ initial perceptions of urban communities and schools. Furthermore, it explored whether engaging in critical service-learning coursework incorporating an anti-racist curriculum disrupted the mechanisms that perpetuate racist ideological habits and associations. The narrative analysis deconstructed 12 participants’ reflective essays using a critical race theoretical lens. The overall findings revealed that the participants experience urban communities through racist associations and ideologies promoting white supremacist thinking. The critical service-learning course did influence the perceptions of the participants. However, findings suggest that a single critical service-learning course is insufficient to prepare pre-service teachers with the anti-racist pedagogies necessary for …

Digital Stress Management In Cancer: Testing Stressproffen In A 12-Month Randomized Controlled Trial, Elin Børøsund, Shawna L. Ehlers, Matthew M. Clark, Michael A. Andrykowski, Milada Cvancarova Småstuen, Lise Solberg Nes

Behavioral Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioral stress management interventions are associated with improved psychological well-being for cancer survivors. The availability of, access to, and outreach of these in-person interventions are limited, however. The current study, therefore, evaluated the efficacy of StressProffen, a digital application (app)-based stress management intervention for cancer survivors, in a 12-month randomized controlled trial.

METHODS: Cancer survivors 1 year or less after their treatment (N = 172) were randomized to the StressProffen intervention (n = 84) or a usual-care control group (n = 88). The intervention was delivered in a simple blended care model: 1) 1 in-person introduction session, 2) 10 …

Use Of Attractant And Repellent Semiochemicals To Manage Stable Fly (Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.)) Populations On Pastured Cattle Using A Push–Pull Strategy, Alexander Thomas Lehmann Dec 2021

Use Of Attractant And Repellent Semiochemicals To Manage Stable Fly (Stomoxys Calcitrans (L.)) Populations On Pastured Cattle Using A Push–Pull Strategy, Alexander Thomas Lehmann

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Stable flies (Diptera: Muscidae) are major economic pests of pastured cattle. Their feeding activity causes billions of dollars of damage to the cattle industry. This project investigated the management of stable flies on pastured cattle using a novel Push-Pull treatment in field trials. The repellent Push treatment, a hydrogenated coconut oil containing approximately 70% of C8, C10, and C12 fatty acids in a starch-pectin water formulation, was applied to the animals weekly. The Pull component was a stable fly trap augmented with an attractant (m-cresol). Permethrin and untreated controls were used as comparisons. Both permethrin and Push-Pull treatments reduced stable …

Separation Beyond Walls: A Discussion Of The Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Prevention Through Deterrence, Kristina Lynch Dec 2021

Separation Beyond Walls: A Discussion Of The Practical And Theoretical Implications Of Prevention Through Deterrence, Kristina Lynch

Undergraduate Theses

This thesis investigates the alternative policing strategy known as Prevention Through Deterrence affecting undocumented migrants at the United States Southern Border. By forcing migrants into the Sonoran Desert, they are subject to countless dangers along their immigration attempt, and in many cases death, as a means to eliminate these “unwanted figures” from the public eye. The policies that comprise Prevention Through Deterrence have been in effect since the 1990’s, but the prevention of certain people from effectively immigrating to the United States has been occurring for just about the entire history of our country. The fact that it is still …

The Privilege Of Low Pay: Informal Educators’ Perspectives On Workforce Equity And Diversity, K. Ren Rende, K. Fromson, M. G. Jones, M. Ennes

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Despite attempts to diversify the informal science education workforce, institutions like museums, zoos, and aquariums continue to be places of privilege where few can afford to make education a life-long career. This exploratory study examined informal science educators’ perspectives on workforce equity, diversity, and professionalization. Through a nationwide survey and selective interviews, educators (n = 132) were asked about their career motivations and personal and professional challenges faced before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results show that 59% of informal science educators surveyed were considering academic or career changes, citing workplace practices and cultures that perpetuate overwork and underpay …

Contextualizing Motivating Language To Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr): How Leader Motivating Language Affects Employees’ Csr Engagement And Employee–Organization Relationships, Yafei Zhang, Chuqing Dong, Andrea Mm Weare, Song Harris Ao

Communication Faculty Publications

Drawing on motivating language theory (MLT), this paper aims to demonstrate the effects of strategic leader speech in the context of internal corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication. Specifically, the study (1) examines how leader motivating language strategies used in CSR communication influence employees’ CSR engagement and employee–organization relationships (EORs) and (2) identifies the mediator explaining the underlying psychological mechanism of the effects. Structural equation modeling was performed on a sample of 406 participants who are full-time and part-time employees in the U.S. The results showed that leader motivating language was positively associated with employees’ CSR engagement and EOR quality. Such …

The Interdependent Roles Of The Psychosocial Predictors Of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among Christian Parents Of Unvaccinated Adolescents, Ayokunle Olagoke, Rachel Caskey, Brenikki Floyd, Jennifer Herbert-Beirne, Andrew D. Boyd, Yamilé Molina Dec 2021

The Interdependent Roles Of The Psychosocial Predictors Of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Among Christian Parents Of Unvaccinated Adolescents, Ayokunle Olagoke, Rachel Caskey, Brenikki Floyd, Jennifer Herbert-Beirne, Andrew D. Boyd, Yamilé Molina

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Despite the availability of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, uptake has been sub-optimal among certain religious groups. Psychosocial factors (threat appraisal, coping appraisal, and attitudes) have been identified as independent determinants of HPV vaccination. However, their interdependent effects have not been tested. We examined the interdependency of these psychosocial factors in predicting HPV vaccination intention among Christian parents of unvaccinated adolescents (using a theory-driven conceptual model). A cross-sectional study of 342 participants showed that perceived self-efficacy (β = 0.2, 0.11–0.29, p = <0.0001) and perceived response efficacy of HPV vaccine (β = 0.65, 0.53–0.77. p < .0001) were positively associated with vaccination intention. Our mediation analysis (using the Preachers and Hayes’ approach) shows that attitudes toward HPV vaccination mediated 59% of the relationship between perceived self-efficacy to vaccinate child and HPV …

Direction For Protection: Multimedia Messaging To Address Racial Health Disparities, Florence F. Litchmore-Smith

Publications and Research

According to the CDC (2021), black people have higher risks of hospitalization and death from COVID 19. The Kaiser Family Foundation (2021) reports that black adults are less likely to have received the COVID 19 vaccination than white, Asian and Hispanic adults, placing them at greater risk for COVID 19 infection. Lower rates of vaccination focus attention on the need for messages tailored to underserved populations. In this study, we review historical and contemporary events to acknowledge important milestones in public health. Using graphic arts, we present a symbolization of the social determinants of health and a poster highlighting some …

Covid-19 Has Had Devastating Economic Impacts On Older Black And Latinx Adults, Claire Pendergrast, Amy Thierry, Marc A. Garcia Dec 2021

Covid-19 Has Had Devastating Economic Impacts On Older Black And Latinx Adults, Claire Pendergrast, Amy Thierry, Marc A. Garcia

Population Health Research Brief Series

Black and Latinx communities have been disproportionately affected by economic hardships during the pandemic, magnifying long-standing economic inequalities. This research brief shows that in the first year of the pandemic, older Black and Latinx adults experienced greater negative economic impacts than older White adults. Foreign-born and U.S.-born Latinx adults experienced especially significant economic hardships relative to other groups. To reduce the disproportionate economic impacts of crises like COVID-19 on older Black and Latinx adults, policymakers should prioritize economic relief measures and support broader social policy to reduce economic inequality.

Semantically Meaningful Sentence Embeddings, Rojina Deuja Dec 2021

Semantically Meaningful Sentence Embeddings, Rojina Deuja

School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Text embedding is an approach used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) to represent words, phrases, sentences, and documents. It is the process of obtaining numeric representations of text to feed into machine learning models as vectors (arrays of numbers). One of the biggest challenges in text embedding is representing longer text segments like sentences. These representations should capture the meaning of the segment and the semantic relationship between its constituents. Such representations are known as semantically meaningful embeddings. In this thesis, we seek to improve upon the quality of sentence embeddings that capture semantic information.

The current state-of-the-art models are …

Frontline Justice: The Evolution And Reform Of Summary Trials In The Canadian Armed Forces By Pascal Lévesque, David Galvin Heppenstall

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The security of Canada and the safety of its inhabitants depend on the readiness of the Armed Forces. To maintain this readiness, service members are subject to special disciplinary standards and penal processes that ordinary courts are ill-suited to handle. A separate military justice system—which exists parallel to the civilian criminal justice system—imposes these distinct standards and enforces swift, stern discipline.
