Community Health Sciences
Purpose: Diarrhea and pneumonia greatly contribute to high childhood mortality in Pakistan. Frontline community health workers or the Lady Health Workers (LHWs) provide care at the doorstep of over 60% of Pakistan's rural residents. Difficult terrain, lack of supplies, and inadequate supervision put these LHWs at an added disadvantage in the timely diagnosis and delivery of known treatment options to community caregivers (CCGs). This study aims to assess whether a supportive supervision intervention through Lady Health Supervisors (LHSs) using enhanced mentorship and written feedback cards have the potential to improve case management of childhood diarrhea and pneumonia.

Transforming Prescription Opioid Practices In Primary Care With Change Theory, Rob E. Carpenter, Dave Silberman, Jody Takemoto
Transforming Prescription Opioid Practices In Primary Care With Change Theory, Rob E. Carpenter, Dave Silberman, Jody Takemoto
Human Resource Development Faculty Publications and Presentations
The opioid epidemic continues to be an ongoing public health crisis. Many primary health care providers aptly serve as the gate keeper to opioid prescriptions. The opioid epidemic has challenged the primary care profession whilst many of these providers have opted out of opioid prescribing altogether. This unintended consequence affirms erosion to primary care that is vital to the ecosystem of opioid management. The purpose of this study was to understand strategies to deliver opioids safely and effectively. Results indicate primary care providers are uniquely positioned to make a positive opioid impact through focused change initiatives. Five common themes arose …

How Peer Mentoring Can Help Universities Promote Student Success In A Post-Covid-19 Pandemic World, Peter J. Collier
How Peer Mentoring Can Help Universities Promote Student Success In A Post-Covid-19 Pandemic World, Peter J. Collier
Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations
The COVID -19 pandemic and fallout from universities’ pandemic response efforts has made the adjustment to college more complex for new students. This is particularly true for students who lack familiarity with how college works. In addition to student adjustment issues, new pandemic -related issues include a greater risk for information overload, problematic access to technology and the Internet, more complicated decision making, greater difficulty in recognizing relevant resources and effective strategies for addressing specific issues, and difficulties in responding to issues that take different forms in remote or hybrid learning contexts. Peer mentoring can help. Informed by interviews with …

Soil seed banks represent a critical but hidden stock for potential future plant diversity on Earth. Here we compiled and analyzed a global dataset consisting of 15,698 records of species diversity and density for soil seed banks in natural plant communities worldwide to quantify their environmental determinants and global patterns. Random forest models showed that absolute latitude was an important predictor for diversity of soil seed banks. Further, climate and soil were the major determinants of seed bank diversity, while net primary productivity and soil characteristics were the main predictors of seed bank density. Moreover, global mapping revealed clear spatial …

Regeneration, the replacement of body parts in a living animal, has excited scientists for centuries and our knowledge of vertebrate appendage regeneration has increased significantly over the past decades. While the ability of amniotes to regenerate body parts is very limited, members of other vertebrate clades have been shown to have rather high regenerative capacities. Among tetrapods (four-limbed vertebrates), only salamanders show unparalleled capacities of epimorphic tissue regeneration including replacement of organ and body parts in an apparently perfect fashion. The closest living relatives of Tetrapoda, the lungfish, show regenerative abilities that are comparable to those of salamanders and recent …
Single-Variable Porous Nanomaterial Series From Polymer Structure-Directing Agents, Morgan Stefik
Single-Variable Porous Nanomaterial Series From Polymer Structure-Directing Agents, Morgan Stefik
Faculty Publications
Block polymer structure-directing agents (SDA) enable the production of porous nanoscale materials. Most strategies rely upon polymer equilibration where diverse morphologies are realized in porous functional materials. This review details how solvent selectivity determines the polymer SDA behaviors, spanning from bulk-type to solution-type. Equilibrating behavior of either type, however, obscures nanostructure cause-and-effect since the resulting sample series convolve multiple spatial variations. Solution-type SDA behaviors include both dynamic and persistent micelles. Persistent micelle templates (PMT) use high solvent selectivity for kinetic entrapment. PMTs enable independent wall thickness control with demonstrated 2 Å precision alterations. Unimodal PMT pore size distributions have spanned …
The Significance Of Continuing Education On The Intention Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses To Report Child Maltreatment, Adaorah N. U. Azotam
The Significance Of Continuing Education On The Intention Of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses To Report Child Maltreatment, Adaorah N. U. Azotam
Dissertations
The Centers for Disease Control have recognized child maltreatment as a national epidemic that calls for healthcare providers to focus on early identification and prevention of violence against children. Even though society has this expectation for healthcare professionals, research has shown that there is still a pervasive phenomenon of underreporting this societal ill. Current nursing research identifies education as a significant factor in determining the decision to report child maltreatment in the mandatory reporter role. Based on this conclusion, the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) served as the research framework to understand the pertinent facilitating components of intended reporting behaviors …

Our names are Edgar Aponte and Jacob Gomez and we are Applied Mathematics students at City Tech. Our mentor is Prof. Isaacson and we conducted an analysis of comparison-based sorting algorithms, meaning that they can sort items of any type for which a “less-than” relation is defined. We implemented 24 comparison-based sorting algorithms and elaborated on 6 for our poster. We analyzed the running times of these sorting algorithms with various sets of unsorted data and found that introspective sort and timsort were the fastest and most efficient, with introspective sort being the very fastest.

According to the Safety Organization Kids and Cars, an average of 38 children die each year from hot cars due to lack of attention from parents. Existing alert system uses sensors that detect child presence and care less about detecting temperature inside the car. In order to save children from heatstroke, our research focuses on providing information about the temperature inside the car using very effective sensors with high precision. In our research, we have tested different sensors and figured out three sensors that can provide precise information about the presence of a child without an adult. Our child detection …

Despite good adherence to supervised endurance exercise training (EET), some individuals experience no or little improvement in peripheral insulin sensitivity. The genetic and molecular mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are currently not understood. By investigating genome-wide variants associated with baseline and exercise-induced changes (∆) in insulin sensitivity index (Si) in healthy volunteers, we have identified novel candidate genes whose mouse knockouts phenotypes were consistent with a causative effect on Si. An integrative analysis of functional genomic and transcriptomic profiles suggests genetic variants have an aggregate effect on baseline Si and ∆Si, focused around cholinergic …

Problem Description: Historically, peer review has been compelled by regulatory and legislative mandates, such as the Joint Commission Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) requirement and the Health Care Quality Improvement Act (HCQIA) enacted by Congress in 1986. [1] However, these external mandates were focused on quality assurance, generally carrying punitive connotations and practically translated into rote compliance without the benefit of learning and improvement. In fact, the lack of quality improvement focus prompted the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to release its 2015 report, “Improving Diagnosis in Health Care,” stating that a “critical type of error in health care—diagnostic error—has received …

Early-Time Non-Equilibrium Pitch Angle Diffusion Of Electrons By Whistler-Mode Hiss In A Plasmaspheric Plume Associated With Barrel Precipitation, R. M. Millan, J. F. Ripoll, O. Santolík, W. S. Kurth
Dartmouth Scholarship
In August 2015, the Balloon Array for Radiation belt Relativistic Electron Losses (BARREL) observed precipitation of energetic ((Formula presented.) 200 keV) electrons magnetically conjugate to a region of dense cold plasma as measured by the twin Van Allen Probes spacecraft. The two spacecraft passed through the high density region during multiple orbits, showing that the structure was spatial and relatively stable over many hours. The region, identified as a plasmaspheric plume, was filled with intense hiss-like plasma waves. We use a quasi-linear diffusion model to investigate plume whistler-mode hiss waves as the cause of precipitation observed by BARREL. The model …
