Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

For the fourth year in a row, WalletHub has named Utah as the worst state in the nation for women’s equality in their report “2021’s Best & Worst States for Women’s Equality,” released August 23, 2021. To ascertain where women receive the most equal treatment, WalletHub’s analysis compared the 50 states across 17 key indicators of women’s equality. The indicators ranged from the gap between the number of female and male executives, to the disparity in unemployment rates for women and men, to gender differences in education and health.

The Social Determinants of Health (SDOH), presented by the World Health Organization (WHO) and a cross-organizational global commission in the early 2000s, provide an understanding of health status of individuals and communities. SDOH consider societal forces and conditions such as housing, work conditions, environment, and education (Braveman & Gottlieb, 2014; WHO, 2021). The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (n.d.) launched a “Healthy People 2030” initiative, addressing five key social determinants of health and offering a framework from which organizations can build strategy: 1. Healthcare access and quality 2. Education access and quality 3. Social and community context 4. …

The Impact Of Peer Suicide During Adolescence On Mental Health: An Adult Perspective, Cassandra J. Vanzuiden

Honors Capstones

Problem: Initial interventions after the suicide of adolescents typically focus on those directly impacted by the death, however, little is known about the impact the suicide of a peer can have on adolescents, regardless of their relationship with the decedent. This study aims to understand how peer suicide has affected adolescents and to find resources that would help address their future mental health concerns. Method: A qualitative study was conducted consisting of interviews with four adults between the ages of 20 to 23 and six questions were asked of the participants surrounding their experiences with peer suicide during adolescence. Targeting Oncogenic Gαq/11 In Uveal Melanoma, Dominic Lapadula, Jeffrey L Benovic Dec 2021

Targeting Oncogenic Gαq/11 In Uveal Melanoma, Dominic Lapadula, Jeffrey L Benovic

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular cancer in adults and arises from the transformation of melanocytes in the uveal tract. While treatment of the primary tumor is often effective, 36–50% of patients develop metastatic disease primarily to the liver. While various strategies have been used to treat the metastatic disease, there remain no effective treatments that improve survival. Significant insight has been gained into the pathways that are altered in uveal melanoma, with mutually exclusive activating mutations in the GNAQ and GNA11 genes being found in over 90% of patients. These genes encode the alpha subunits of the hetetrotrimeric …

Gardner-Webb’S Teacher Assistants To Teachers Program Helps Student Pursue Her Dream, Sariana Miranda-Rosado

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Tishauna Gillard, a student in the Elementary Education for Teacher Assistants (TA) to Teachers program at Gardner-Webb University, became more involved in the world of education in 2016. She did what most concerned parents do when change is coming in their child’s school. Her son was in the third grade, and his school was merging with another. To prepare for the transition, the school system held meetings with parents and stakeholders. Gillard, who lives in Concord, N.C., went to a meeting and voiced her concerns. Afterward, the teachers asked her to join the Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Later, they asked …

Punishment Without Trial: Why Plea Bargaining Is A Bad Deal, Jacob Burns Center For Ethics In The Practice Of Law

2021 Event Invitations

When Americans think of the criminal justice system, they picture a trial. The right to a trial by jury is supposed to undergird our entire justice system – but that bedrock constitutional right has all but disappeared thanks to plea bargaining. In 2018, more than 97 percent of defendants pleaded guilty.

In Punishment Without Trial: Why Plea Bargaining Is A Bad Deal, Carissa Byrne Hessick makes the case against plea bargaining and illustrates why we need to fix it if we ever hope to achieve lasting criminal justice reform.

Assessing Motivation As Predictors Of Academic Success In Collegiate Aviation Classrooms, Nicholas Wilson, Robert H. Stupnisky Dec 2021

Assessing Motivation As Predictors Of Academic Success In Collegiate Aviation Classrooms, Nicholas Wilson, Robert H. Stupnisky

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

The aviation industry changes rapidly. As such, it is important to continually re-assess our understanding of future aviation professionals and how their motivation translates into career-related performance. The present study applies Social Cognitive Theory (Bandura, 1986) to understand 229 students’ motivation in a fourth-year technical aircraft systems course. To further our understanding of motivation and performance, the Science Motivation Questionnaire II (SMQ-II; Glynn, Brickman, Armstrong, & Taasoobshirazi, 2011), which measures intrinsic motivation, career motivation, grade motivation, self-determination, and self-efficacy, was adapted to the collegiate aviation domain. Using structural equation modeling techniques (Arbuckle, 2017), the study found strong predictive relationships between …

What Is The Impact Of Work-From-Home (Wfh) Arrangements On The Quality Of Life (Qol)?, Jordan Lee, Mykyta Pervak, Augustine Peh, Jun Hao Tang, Eoh Jin Cho, Calister Tan

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

The ongoing pandemic has forced countries’ education systems to continue to operate in a fragile and uncertain environment. Given the limited existing literature regarding the pandemic’s impact on the Quality of life (QoL) for teachers, this study aims to bridge the gap and provide a detailed analysis of how the extent of providing online courses and time to transition online during the pandemic could impact a tertiary educator’s QoL. The factors defining the dependent variable, QoL, were derived from past studies and made applicable within the confines of our research. The independent variables are the amount of time spent …

Community-Based Rehabilitation's Effectiveness In Reducing Singapore Juvenile Recidivism, Denzil Neo, June Hyuk Lee, Mervin Xin Hong Chew, Munisraj Sarfoji, Timothy Prakash

Introduction to Research Methods RSCH 202

Singapore's juvenile recidivism rate has climbed by around 5% since 2013, putting the country at risk of increased youth crime. With several mandatory rehabilitative programmes classified into two categories, Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) and Institutional-Based Rehabilitation (IBR), it is unclear whether the mandatory individual rehabilitative programmes for offenders were actually effective in achieving their corrective goals. This proposal would undertake a regression analysis to compare the effectiveness of CBR and IBR programmes utilizing secondary data gathered by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and primary data from a survey. The survey will provide previously unstudied insights into the offender's …
