International Journal of Speleology
Interpreting depositional settings of cave sites is generally problematic, especially in absence of paleontological/archaeological evidence. This is the case of some deposits at San Teodoro Cave (Sicily), a key site for the Mediterranean Palaeolithic. In a stratigraphic level interrupted by a carbonatic concretion, phosphatic nodules are present only in the part enclosed between the concretion and the cave wall. The discovery of these nodules combined with the punctual lack of fossils had initially suggested an erosion phenomenon and subsequent formation of nodules at a vadose level. Here we show the usefulness of an integrated, geochemical-paleoecological approach in defining stratigraphy and …

High Salinity Effects On The Components Of Relative Growth Rate In Rhodes Grass, E. Taleisnik, L. García Seffino, A. Córdoba, K. Grunberg, C. Arias, M. De Luca
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana Kunth), is widely cultivated in the semiarid tropics and favored for its salt tolerance. Nevertheless, productivity decreases significantly under saline conditions, especially in tetraploid cultivars. The purpose of this work was to explore, in tetraploid cultivar Boma, the physiological causes for the observed salt-associated growth reduction. The effects of high salinity (200 mM NaCl) on the components of relative growth rate were analyzed in greenhouse experiments. An early reduction in leaf area expansion was observed, which later resulted in decreased dry matter accumulation. Plant leafiness was reduced by effects both on dry matter allocation to …

Isolating Detrital And Diagenetic Signals In Magnetic Susceptibility Records From Methane-Bearing Marine Sediments, Joel E. Johnson, Stephen C. Phillips, William C. Clyde, Liviu Giosan, Marta E. Torres
Faculty Publications
Volume-dependent magnetic susceptibility (κ) is commonly used for paleoenvironmental reconstructions in both terrestrial and marine sedimentary environments where it reflects a mixed signal between primary deposition and secondary diagenesis. In the marine environment, κ is strongly influenced by the abundance of ferrimagnetic minerals regulated by sediment transport processes. Post-depositional alteration by H2S, however, can dissolve titanomagnetite, releasing reactive Fe that promotes pyritization and subsequently decreases κ. Here, we provide a new approach for isolating the detrital signal in κ and identifying intervals of diagenetic alteration of κ driven by organoclastic sulfate reduction (OSR) and the anaerobic oxidation of …

The Growth Of Vapour Bubble Between Two-Phase Peristaltic Bubbly Flow Inside A Vertical Cylindrical Tube, S. A. Mohammadein, A. K. Abu-Nab
International Journal of Thin Film Science and Technology
The behavior of vapour bubble in superheated liquid in a vertical cylindrical tube between two-phase flow densities is discussed under the effect of peristaltic motion of long wavelength and low Reynolds number. The mathematical model is formulated by mass, momentum, and heat equations. The problem solved analytically to estimate the growth of vapour bubbles, temperature and velocity distributions. The growth of vapour bubbles, temperature and velocity distribution proportional with the amplitude ratio, Grashof number, heat source parameter, volume rate, and inversely with density fraction. The present results of bubble growth performed lower values than that obtained by Mohammadein model (2001).

Phosphorus, Sulphur And Micronutrients On Grassland Improvement With White Clover (Trifolium Repens L.) On Basaltic Soils In Uruguay, A. Morón, D. F. Risso
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Grasslands improvement with legumes is a promising technology for increasing forage quality and productivity on basaltic soils, but requires the correction of nutrient deficiencies. Phosphorus is a key element, but usual techniques of soil analysis are not good predictors. An experimental work was conducted in the northern region of the country. Evaluating the response of an improvement with white clover to P. Citric Acid showed a good association between soil P status and legume behavior. In addition there was a positive trend in forage production, in relation to S application, even though this effect was only significant in legume yield …

Many farmers apply liquid cattle manure on grassland, often in excess of crop N requirement, resulting in groundwater contamination. Our experiment was carried out to determine the effect of liquid cattle manure application on the botanical composition, forage dry yield and soil chemical characteristics in mixed pastures at the forage experimental field, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Korea. Five treatments consisting of no fertilizer, chemical fertilizer (210kg N/ ha), liquid cattle manure (40, 60 and 80 ton N/ ha) were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. No fertilizer treatment consistently had lower botanical composition rate of …

Nutrient Dynamics And Inventory In Tropical Grassland Ecosystem In Southern India, K. Karunaichamy, Kailash Paliwal
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The present study was to ascertain the distribution of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and sodium (Na) in the different plant components and in the soil top 30 cm at Kalikesam in Western Ghats region of southern India. Magnesium concentration increased in the order: dead shoots > belowground > litter > aboveground live. Sodium concentration in live shoots was maximum in February (0.51%) and minimum in August (0.05%). Annually 8.94 g/m2 Ca, 2.41g/ m2 Mg and 2.30g/ m2 Na was taken up by plants. The distribution of the three nutrients in plant/soil system indicated that the major portion of the nutrients …

The Effect Of Fermented Saw-Dust Pig Manure On Forage Mineral Contents And Soil Fertility In Cheju Volcanic Ash Soil, M. C. Kim, T. G. Kim
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Studies were carried out to investigate the change of soil characteristics and pasture minerals as affected by fermented saw-dust pig manure(FSM) applied to mixed pasture of a brown volcanic ash soil during the period from October 1996 to October 1998. Pasture mixed with orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.) was treated with N 200kg/ha + P 300kg/ha +K 200kg/ha(T1), N 100kg/ha + 10 ton/ha FSM(T2), FSM 10 ton/ha(T3), 20ton/ha FSM(T4), 40ton/ha FSM(T5) or 80ton/ha FSM(T6). K and P contents of mixed pasture in the 3rd year after sowing increased significantly with increasing levels of …
