Institutionalized Child Abuse: The Troubled Teen Industry, Yasmin L. Younis
Institutionalized Child Abuse: The Troubled Teen Industry, Yasmin L. Younis
SLU Law Journal Online
The “troubled teen industry” is an industry providing behavioral modification treatment to youths that promises to keep children safe, but by design is a breeding grounds for institutionalized child abuse through legal loopholes. By analyzing the legal shortcomings and alleged abuses, Yasmin Younis stresses the importance of heavy regulation in order to provide the necessary treatment some of these children need.
Forest Structure, Above-Ground Carbon Stocks, And Productivity Along An Elevational Gradient In The Ecuadorian Andes, Esteban Pinto
Forest Structure, Above-Ground Carbon Stocks, And Productivity Along An Elevational Gradient In The Ecuadorian Andes, Esteban Pinto
Theses and Dissertations
The Andean forest provides a natural laboratory for evaluating long-term interactions between forests and variation in environmental parameters along elevational gradients. In particular, the mechanisms that control above-ground carbon stocks (AGC) and natural dynamics in mountain ecosystems constitute a potentially powerful tool for understanding the function of these ecosystems and their response to current climate change scenarios or past human disturbances. The present study integrates biotic (rarefied species richness and leaf traits) and abiotic (climate, soil properties and degradation) factors as possible drivers of AGC stocks, AGC net change (AGCnt), AGC productivity (AGCp) and AGC mortality (AGCk), along an elevational …
How Democratic Is Democracy? A History Of Political Corruption In Peru, Kaitlyn Selzler
How Democratic Is Democracy? A History Of Political Corruption In Peru, Kaitlyn Selzler
Great Plains Graduate Review
With the emergence of revisionist scholarship beginning in the 1960’s and 1970’s, scholars have taken terms which had absolute definitions, such as totalitarianism or democracy, and introduced different perspectives and methods which questioned the absolute authority of historical terminology. As a case study into these new historical methodologies, this essay seeks to answer the question: How democratic is Peru’s democracy? To answer this question, this research explores the deep seeded corruption in Latin America, specifically Peru, beginning in 1985 with the election of Alan Garcia, continuing through the presidency of Alberto Fujimori, and eventually ending with the current state of …
Polyploidy And Pollen Grain Size: Is There A Correlation?, Harry Sanders
Polyploidy And Pollen Grain Size: Is There A Correlation?, Harry Sanders
Great Plains Graduate Review
Pollen grain size has been regularly used as an indicator of the ploidy level in plants. It has been demonstrated in some plants and assumed in others that the larger the pollen, the higher the level of ploidy. However, very little work has been done to confirm that this rule is accurate in at least the majority of cases. Most correlations of pollen grain size to ploidy level have been a side note in other research and have not considered the theoretical and genomic implications involved in such a measurement. While much of the literature presents ploidy level as being …

Climate Change, Environmental Justice And Children’S Health: Break The Cycle Of Climate Change By Cultivating Future Leaders, I Leslie Rubin, Nse Obot Witherspoon
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Children are more vulnerable to adverse environmental factors than adults. Children from poor communities, who are predominantly children of color, are most vulnerable to adverse environmental factors and have fewer protective resources. This combination results in adverse health outcomes for the children and impacts their potential for the future. This scenario can be viewed as an intergenerational cycle of heath disparities. Although the scope of the problem is vast, positive changes can be made on small scales, which, collectively have a significant impact in reducing health disparities and promoting health equity for all children. We have developed a program called …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cobalt Pigmented Anodized Zinc For Photocatalytic Application, Judith Chebwogen, Onesmus Munyati, Sylvester Hatwaambo, Mghendi Mwamburi, Christopher Maghanga
International Journal of Thin Film Science and Technology
ZnO is an n-type oxide semiconductor with a direct wide band gap greater than 3 eV. Like any other semiconductor, the optical and electrical characteristics can be influenced by doping or adjusting process conditions which broaden its applications. In this work, varying amounts of Cobalt (0.01g-0.04g) were electrodeposited on anodized Zinc thin films (ZnO) followed by heat treatment to about 2500C. Optical characterization was performed in the range 300-2500 nm to obtain reflectance data which aided in defining the absorption coefficient and band gap of the films. Photocatalytic activity of the films was explored in Methylene Blue solution degradation under …

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Nitrogen budgets on a pasture being utilized for both grazing and cutting were investigated. A pasture containing tallfescue, orchard grass and white clover was divided into two areas: initially grazed (IA, 0.41ha) and grazed after cutting for hay (BA, 0.49ha). A herd of 4-5 cattle (heifers or steers of Japanese Black or Holstein) grazed at IA from 22 Apr. to 2 Jul. and grazed at both IA and BA from 3 Jul. to 21 Oct. 1999. The amount of N grazed from IA was 3 times higher than the sum of N of grazed herbage and harvested hay from BA. …

Effect Of Phosphatic Fertilizer Rates Level On Growth, Crude Protein Content And Nitrogen Fixation Ability Of Alfalfa At Sowing Year, Chang-Ho Kim, Hyo-Won Lee
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The experiment was conducted to determine effects of phosphate fertilizers on growth characteristics, crude protein content and nitrogen fixation ability of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L) in the sowing year. Two rates of phosphate (200 and 400 kg/ha P) were applied to phosphorus -deficient native soil in Korea and samples were taken every 7 days from the 30th to the 93rd day. Number of branches, root length and dry matter weight at phosphate fertilizer level of 400kg in sowing year more increased than those at 200kg/ha. The number of nodules did not differ due to phosphate fertilizer rate. The crude …

Phosphorus Fertilizer Requirements For Temperate Dairy Pastures And Milk Production In South Eastern Australia, C. J. P. Gourley, I. Awty, M. O'Doherty, S. R. Aarons
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
Phosphorus (P) fertilizer is required to sustain productive pastures in Australia, yet optimum P fertility is poorly defined. A large farmlet study involving 10 herds was established in 1995 to determine the relationship between milk production and pasture response to four different P fertilizer rates, at three stocking rates. Pasture growth significantly increased with increasing P fertilizer rate. Cumulative milk production from pasture over 4 years, was significantly affected by P fertilizer, but responses diminished with increasing P rate. The results from this study will enable a better targeting of P fertility levels for profitable milk production from temperate dairy …

Responses To Nitrogen Fertilizer In Dairy Pastures With Differing Phosphorus Fertility In South Eastern Australia, C. J. P. Gourley, H. Frame, M. E. Hall
IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)
The application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer to temperate pastures is an increasingly popular management tool for boosting pasture production on dairy farms in Australia. However, limited information is available about N fertilizer responses that can be obtained from pastures with varying levels of phosphorus (P) fertility. A field experiment examining the initial and residual response of pasture growth to urea was carried out within a large dairy farmlet study, in October 1998. The four P fertility treatments (Olsen P values) ranged from 9 to 32 mg/kg. Dry matter yields increased with increasing N rates in all treatments, at both harvests. …

Doxorubicin (Dox) is used for breast cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma treatment as an effective chemotherapeutic agent. However, Dox use is restricted due to inherent and acquired resistance and an 8-fold increase in the risk of potentially fatal cardiotoxicity. Hybrid cyclic-linear peptide [R5K]W7A and linear peptide R5KW7A were conjugated with Dox through a glutarate linker to afford [R5K]W7A-Dox and R5KW7A-Dox conjugates to generate Dox derivatives. Alternatively, [R5K]W7C was conjugated with Dox via a disulfide linker to generate [R5K]W7C–S–S-Dox conjugate, where S–S is a disulfide bond. Comparative antiproliferative assays between conjugates [R5K]W7A-Dox, [R5K]W7C–S–S-Dox, linear R5KW7A-Dox, the corresponding physical mixtures of the peptides, …

Small Studies, Big Decisions: The Role Of Pilot/Feasibility Studies In Incremental Science And Premature Scale-Up Of Behavioral Interventions, Michael William Beets, Lauren Von Klinggraeff, Robert G. Weaver, Bridget Ryan Armstrong, Sarah Burkart

Background: Careful consideration and planning are required to establish “sufficient” evidence to ensure an investment in a larger, more well-powered behavioral intervention trial is worthwhile. In the behavioral sciences, this process typically occurs where smaller-scale studies inform larger-scale trials. Believing that one can do the same things and expect the same outcomes in a larger-scale trial that were done in a smaller-scale preliminary study (i.e., pilot/feasibility) is wishful thinking, yet common practice. Starting small makes sense, but small studies come with big decisions that can influence the usefulness of the evidence designed to inform decisions about moving forward with a …

Food choice for children has important implications in establishing early-life dietary habits and preferences. Food choice for children has been studied as parent–child dyad dynamics, but little is known about the extended system of relationships in maternal food choice for children. The objective of this study was to understand the functions of mothers' social networks in the food choices that mothers make for their children ages 1 to 5 years old in rural Mexico. In-depth interviews were conducted with 46 participants in three rural communities. The interviews inquired about participants' child-feeding practices, personal and local beliefs about child feeding and …

Simultaneous Experiences Of Type 2 Diabetes And Symptoms Of Depression And/Or Anxiety Among Latina Women 60 And Older, Adrienne S. Martinez-Hollingsworth
Simultaneous Experiences Of Type 2 Diabetes And Symptoms Of Depression And/Or Anxiety Among Latina Women 60 And Older, Adrienne S. Martinez-Hollingsworth
Dissertations
Latina older adult women disproportionately suffer from type 2 diabetes (diabetes) and symptoms of depression and/or anxiety. These disease states are associated with serious declines in health outcomes and a three-fold reduction in treatment compliance. Few studies have examined this phenomenon exclusively among Latina older adult women or have captured the impact of intersectional identity on their experiences, values or problem-solving methods related to self-management.
The purpose of this study was to examine how Latina women, 60 and over, emotionally experience both diabetes and interactions with care providers during help-seeking and care engagement.

An estimated 70 million persons in the Western Hemisphere are living at risk for Chagas disease, a parasitic infection transmitted to humans by over 156 different competent triatomine insect vector species. Prior Pan American Health Organization insecticide campaigns throughout Latin America in the 1990s and 2000s demonstrated that domestic insecticide spraying had temporary effects, which resulted in the re-establishment of triatomine species within a few years. Serendipitously, our team found ectoparasitic mites parasitizing triatomines collected from the field in multiple locations in the southwestern United States, where human–triatomine interaction was high but human parasite infection remains low. Upon further investigation …

Simulating Influenza Epidemics With Waning Vaccine Immunity, Chun-Miin Chen, Alia C. Stanciu
Faculty Journal Articles
In this study, we simulate an influenza epidemic that considers the effects of waning immunity by fitting epidemiological models to CDC secondary historical data aggregated on a weekly basis, and derive the transmission rates at which susceptible individuals become infected over the course of the influenza season. Using a system of differential equations, we define four groups of individuals in a population: susceptible, vaccinated, infected, and recovered. We show that a larger number of initially infected individuals might not only bring the influenza season to an end sooner but also reduce the epidemic size. Moreover, any influenza virus that entails …

Many diseases, including cancer, can lead to neuropathic pain (NP). NP is one of the accompanying symptoms of suffering in many conditions and the life quality of NP patient is seriously affected. Due to complex causes, the effects of clinical treatments have been very unsatisfactory. Many experts have found that neuron-microglia interaction plays an essential role in NP occurrence and development. Therefore, the activation of microglia, related inflammatory mediators and molecular and cellular signaling pathways have become the focus of NP research. With the help of modern functional imaging technology, advanced pre-and clinical studies have been carried out and NP …

Cancer cell lines, which are cell cultures derived from tumor samples, represent one of the least expensive and most studied preclinical models for drug development. Accurately predicting drug responses for a given cell line based on molecular features may help to optimize drug-development pipelines and explain mechanisms behind treatment responses. In this study, we focus on DNA methylation profiles as one type of molecular feature that is known to drive tumorigenesis and modulate treatment responses. Using genome-wide, DNA methylation profiles from 987 cell lines in the Genomics of Drug Sensitivity in Cancer database, we used machine-learning algorithms to evaluate the …
Radiation And Androgen Deprivation Therapy With Or Without Docetaxel In The Management Of Nonmetastatic Unfavorable-Risk Prostate Cancer: A Prospective Randomized Trial, Andrew Renshaw
All Publications
PURPOSE
Although docetaxel is not recommended when managing men with unfavorable-risk prostate cancer (PC) given negative or inconclusive results from previous randomized trials, unstudied benefits may exist.
METHODS
Between September 21, 2005, and January 13, 2015, we randomly assigned 350 men 1:1 with T1c-4N0M0 unfavorable-risk PC to receive radiation therapy (RT) and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) plus docetaxel (60 mg/m2 once every 3 weeks for three cycles before RT and 20 mg/m2 once weekly during RT) versus ADT + RT. We evaluated the treatment effect of adding docetaxel to ADT + RT on the primary end point of overall survival …

Dry And Wet Deposition Of Microplastics In A Semi-Arid Region (Shiraz, Iran), Sajjad Abbasi, Andrew Turner
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Microplastics (MP) have been retrieved from settled dusts and rainfall collected monthly over a period of a year and daily over an additional period of ten days in the city of Shiraz and at an elevated remote site (Mount Derak) in Iran. Total monthly deposition ranged from about 1000 to 3500 MP m−2 at Shiraz and about 200 to 600 MP m−2 at Mount Derak, with greater deposition taking place during the dry months (June to November) than in months when precipitation events occurred. Overall, MP deposition was dominated by dry deposition, with precipitation appearing to washout MP and inhibit …

Internal Wave Dynamics Over Isolated Seamount And Its Influence On Coral Larvae Dispersion, Nataliya Stashchuk, Vasiliy Vlasenko
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
The internal wave dynamics over Rosemary Bank Seamount (RBS), North Atlantic, were investigated using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model. The model was forced by M2-tidal body force. The model results are validated against the in-situ data collected during the 136th cruise of the RRS “James Cook” in June 2016. The observations and the modeling experiments have shown two-wave processes developed independently in the subsurface and bottom layers. Being super-critical topography for the semi-diurnal internal tides, RBS does not reveal any evidence of tidal beams. It was found that below 800-m depth, the tidal flow generates bottom trapped …

We Observe Experimentally The Spontaneous Formation Of Star-Shaped Surface Patterns In Driven Bose-Einstein Condensates. Two-Dimensional Star-Shaped Patterns With L-Fold Symmetry, Ranging From Quadrupole (L=2) To Heptagon Modes (L=7), Are Parametrically Excited By Modulating The Scattering Length Near The Feshbach Resonance. An Effective Mathieu Equation And Floquet Analysis Are Utilized, Relating The Instability Conditions To The Dispersion Of The Surface Modes In A Trapped Superfluid. Identifying The Resonant Frequencies Of The Patterns, We Precisely Measure The Dispersion Relation Of The Collective Excitations. The Oscillation Amplitude Of The Surface Excitations Increases Exponentially During The Modulation. We Find That Only The L=6 Mode …
