Redesigning The Welcome, Lauren Ogrin
Redesigning The Welcome, Lauren Ogrin
Interior Design Capstones
Airports serve as the first and last impression of a city, yet they are often remembered by stress, sensory overload, and a lack of cultural representation. This project explores how storytelling can be intentionally integrated into airport design to improve the overall human experience and create a more meaningful sense of welcome. Through the frameworks of user-centered inquiry, phenomenology, and narrative design, this research examines how materials, spatial sequences, sensory cues, and cultural narratives can influence traveler emotions, cognitive clarity, and feelings of belonging. By understanding how people move through and interpret transitional public spaces, this project proposes design strategies …

Process, Place, And People: A Study Of Contemporary Land Art And Environmental Awareness, Lauren Wright
Landscape Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This capstone investigates how land art can evolve within contemporary environmental, cultural, and educational contexts. The research addresses the issue that much historical land art, while innovative, often lacked ecological accountability, public accessibility, and environmental integration. Through precedent analysis, literature review, and site-based field observation, this study evaluates selected works in the United States and the United Kingdom using a framework focused on site specificity, ecological sensitivity, materiality, construction process, cultural relevance, public engagement, aesthetic value, and longevity. Photographic documentation and annotation were used to translate on-site experiences into comparative analysis. The results reveal that successful contemporary land art prioritizes …
How Can The Endangered Species Act Critical Habitat Designation Process Be Revised To Provide Better Protection For Listed Species Today And Under Future Range Shift Scenarios Due To Climate Change?, Matt Kerber
Mary Ann Bolton Undergraduate Research Award
Humans have interacted with the flora and fauna of Earth in many ways throughout our evolutionary history. Whether that be from a place of fascination, or as a resource to be exploited, humans have relied upon the millions of species that share the Earth with them. These interactions have led humans to both destroy and degrade ecosystems, but also to conserve ecosystems so that they may continue to provide their services and intrinsic value. A major shift in exploitation of wildlife began around the advent of industrialization and the acceleration of technological advancement. The ability and rate at which species …

Coaching, Control, And Calories: The Role Of Athletic Culture In Shaping Student-Athlete Nutrition, Cassidy Casey
Coaching, Control, And Calories: The Role Of Athletic Culture In Shaping Student-Athlete Nutrition, Cassidy Casey
Theses & ETDs
Past research shows that what college athletes eat is influenced by more than just nutritional science. Food choices are shaped by performance expectations, team culture, and the institutional environments athletes are part of every day. Many athletes prioritize eating in ways that support energy, recovery, and performance, but they also rely on convenience, taste, and routine. While access to sports dietitians has been shown to improve eating habits and recovery, coaches often remain the main source of nutrition guidance. This means that team culture and coaching expectations play a major role in how, and whether, athletes follow formal nutrition advice. …

As the aging population continues to grow, dementia and Alzheimer's have become increasingly relevant in healthcare. In the United States, memory care facilities, focusing on medical attention, often lack humane design, leaving the interiors to feel sterile and detached. This study explores collage as a method for developing a systematic approach to interior finishes of memory care facilities, specifically wallcoverings, making design accessible to memory care facilities while supporting the memory function of its residents.
This project utilizes qualitative and image-based methods, along with interviews, to inform the production of a collage and wallcovering. By analyzing pieces from a collage, …
"Respect Is Earned, Not Given": Analyzing Masculine Honor Ideology And Dominance And Prestige-Motivated Outcomes, Norah Rose Schloneger
"Respect Is Earned, Not Given": Analyzing Masculine Honor Ideology And Dominance And Prestige-Motivated Outcomes, Norah Rose Schloneger
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Masculine honor ideology is the idea that men act aggressively or violently toward women and others to achieve a masculine reputation. Previous research shows that men higher in masculine honor seek higher status and use prestige (e.g. respect, honor) or dominance (e.g. aggression, force) to achieve it. Using a variation of the prisoner’s dilemma—a game where participants are assigned to another player that they can choose to compete or cooperate with to maximize a point total—we analyzed behavioral outcomes of said motivations for men higher in masculine honor. We predicted that men higher in masculine honor using honor-dominance motivations would …
Environmental Sustainability Assessment Of Field Phosphate Monitoring Methods For Creeks, Quintino Medi
Environmental Sustainability Assessment Of Field Phosphate Monitoring Methods For Creeks, Quintino Medi
All Theses
Creeks serve as conduits for water, nutrients, and contaminants to larger water bodies such as rivers and lakes, and their health is a key indicator of overall watershed water quality condition. Unlike rivers, creeks are under-monitored due to their small size, hydrological variability, and limited accessibility. Many technologies exist for monitoring phosphorus in surface waters. Technologies may be classified into two general categories: i) proxy real-time sensors, which record generic water quality parameters, and ii) chemical reagent-based assays, which quantify soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in batch samples. There is a lack of studies that compare the features and benefits of …
Denisovan Introgression And Selection At Cntnap2 In Ancient And Modern American Populations, Matthew Barker
Denisovan Introgression And Selection At Cntnap2 In Ancient And Modern American Populations, Matthew Barker
All Theses
The peopling of the Americas created new opportunities for genetic adaptation as ancient populations encountered novel environments across North and South America. Previous research has shown that segments of Indigenous American ancestry contain elevated proportions of Denisovan alleles. The gene CNTNAP2, which is involved in brain development and neuronal function, contains a Denisovan-derived haplotype that represents a candidate locus for adaptive introgression in admixed American populations. A Denisovan-derived core haplotype approximately 55 kb in length was identified within intron 13 of CNTNAP2. This haplotype is primarily found in admixed American populations and occurs rarely outside the Americas, and …
Interfacing Pre-Sampling Platforms With Icp-Ms For High Sensitivity Atomic Detection In Biological And Environmental Matrices, Cameron J. Stouffer
Interfacing Pre-Sampling Platforms With Icp-Ms For High Sensitivity Atomic Detection In Biological And Environmental Matrices, Cameron J. Stouffer
All Dissertations
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a widely employed technique in analytical chemistry for the detection of trace level (sub parts-per-trillion to parts-per-billion) atomic detection. Despite its usefulness in quantifying small quantities of analytes, there are many challenges that arise with the employment of this technique as matrix effects, lack of structural information, and difficulties with sample preparation can hinder the usefulness of the technique. The use of pre-sampling techniques to alleviate these limitations is therefore of great importance. No sampling technique is comprehensive, as sample types have different challenges. Therefore, pre-sampling methods need to be customized based on …
Understanding Variability In Geographic Isolate Of Rotylenchulus Reniformis Across The Us Cotton Belt, Sagar Gc
All Dissertations
Management of the reniform nematode (Rotylenchulus reniformis Linford and Oliveira) in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is a challenge since the resistant cultivars lack uniformity in nematode suppression when tested across multiple geographical regions. The central hypothesis of this study was that regional variability in performance of resistant cotton cultivars is associated with unique reproduction biology (reproduction and virulence) of R. reniformis from distinct geographic origins. Greenhouse studies were conducted to assess differential reproduction biology among nine geographic population of R. reniformis originated from South Carolina (SC), Alabama (AL), Florida (FL), Arkansas (AR), Georgia (GA), Louisiana (LA), Texas (TX), …

The Role Of Advertising In Shaping Eating Habits, Mary J. Landrum
The Role Of Advertising In Shaping Eating Habits, Mary J. Landrum
Journalism Undergraduate Honors Theses
Today, more individuals worldwide are classified as overweight than underweight (World Health Organization, n.d.-a.). Over the past several decades, obesity rates have increased dramatically, particularly in the United States. Since the 1960s, the prevalence of obesity in the U.S. has risen from 13% to 43%, reflecting a significant shift in population health. Even more striking, less than 1% of Americans were considered morbidly obese in 1960, compared to nearly 10% today (USAFacts, 2023). This trend is not limited to the United States. Globally, the percentage of adults living with obesity more than doubled between 1990 and 2022, increasing from 7% …
Effect Of 1,25(Oh)₂D₃ Glycoside Supplementation Duration On Bacterial Chondronecrosis With Osteomyelitis (Bco) Lameness In Broilers, Zoe R. Zeman
Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses
Bacterial chondronecrosis with osteomyelitis (BCO) is a significant cause of lameness in commercial broilers, resulting in substantial animal welfare concerns and economic losses. This study evaluated the effect of 1,25(OH)₂D₃ glycoside supplementation duration on the incidence of BCO-related lameness in broilers. Cobb surplus male broiler chicks were assigned to four treatment groups: a wire-flooring positive control, a litter-flooring negative control, and two treatment groups on litter flooring receiving 1 μg 1,25(OH)₂D₃ as glycosides supplementation per kg diet for either 14 or 28 days. Lameness incidence was recorded from day 22 through day 56, and all lame birds were evaluated for …
The Impact Of Increased Beef Intake On Cardiometabolic Health In Postmenopausal Women: A 16-Week Randomized Controlled Trial, Leen Samman
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
By 2030, it is projected that the number of post-menopausal women globally will reach 1.2 billion. Moreover, because of increases in life expectancy, women will spend a greater proportion of their later years at elevated risk of chronic disease associated with the hormonal changes of the menopausal transition. Dietary interventions, specifically high-protein diets have shown potential mitigating effects; however, most interventions have focused on total protein intake or protein supplements, not whole foods like lean beef. This randomized controlled trial aimed to assess the effects of daily lean beef consumption as part of a higher protein diet on cardiometabolic markers …

Structure Of The Spoiie Protein In Clostridioides Difficile, Robert B. Bauer
Structure Of The Spoiie Protein In Clostridioides Difficile, Robert B. Bauer
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Clostridioides difficile is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for severe gastrointestinal infection. C. difficile-related infection is extremely prevalent in healthcare facilities, causing roughly 30,000 deaths annually in the United States alone. Its main mechanism of virulence is sporulation, which is directed by the SpoIIE protein. This makes SpoIIE an attractive target for the remedy and prevention of infections. The objective of this study was to analyze its structure using both lab techniques and artificial intelligence modeling. A truncated version of this protein, SpoII∆TM, was expressed and analyzed using optimal conditions previously determined in the lab. SDS-PAGE results and analyses confirmed …
Oxytocin-Mediated Trust Formation In Relationship-Based Sales, Isabella G. Farrington
Oxytocin-Mediated Trust Formation In Relationship-Based Sales, Isabella G. Farrington
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Trust is a critical driver of success in relationship-based sales, particularly in complex environments such as medical, pharmaceutical, and B2B markets where decisions involve uncertainty, risk, and long-term commitment. Existing research in marketing and psychology primarily explains trust through interpersonal behaviors, communication, and relationship management strategies. However, the biological mechanisms underlying trust formation remain largely underexplored in these contexts.
This thesis examines the role of oxytocin, a neuropeptide associated with social bonding and cooperation, in shaping trust and decision-making in professional sales environments. Drawing on research from neuroscience, neuroeconomics, and relationship marketing, it proposes that oxytocin-mediated processes provide a biological …
From Chaos To Clockwork: Investigating The Role Of Circadian Genes In Metabolic Development Of 2nd And 3rd Instar Drosophila Larvae, Elliott R. Ruegsegger, Stephanie Hood, Amy Poe
From Chaos To Clockwork: Investigating The Role Of Circadian Genes In Metabolic Development Of 2nd And 3rd Instar Drosophila Larvae, Elliott R. Ruegsegger, Stephanie Hood, Amy Poe
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Circadian clocks regulate daily physiological and metabolic rhythms across many organisms. In Drosophila melanogaster, the molecular clock involving period (per) and timeless regulates gene expression across 24-hour cycles. Circadian rhythms are well characterized in adult, mature organisms, but their emergence during early developmental stages remain poorly understood. In D. melanogaster, the circadian regulation of sleep and feeding rhythms emerges during the 3rd instar larval stage. This suggests that the circadian regulation of metabolism may also arise during this stage. Further, the metabolic consequences of circadian clock disruptions during this developmentally rich period remain unclear. This research aimed to …
Estimating Body Size And Biogeography In The Genus Alligator, Madelyn M. Turala
Estimating Body Size And Biogeography In The Genus Alligator, Madelyn M. Turala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Several studies have examined correlations between total body length (TL) and skeletal measurements in the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis), with some measurements serving as stronger predictors of TL than others. Femur length (FL) has been found to be tightly correlated with TL in A. mississippiensis, and this relationship has been used to estimate body size of extinct crocodilians. This thesis demonstrates that the humerus, radius, ulna, and tibia are also strongly correlated with TL and useful for body size estimation in A. mississippiensis, and thus, can be applied to related extinct crocodilians. Additionally, species distribution modeling …
Adsorption Of Pfas On Bridged Functionalized Organosilica Materials, Elisha Lawerh Kabutey
Adsorption Of Pfas On Bridged Functionalized Organosilica Materials, Elisha Lawerh Kabutey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
PFAS are hazardous contaminants that have a devastating impact on human health and the environment. Their hazardous nature has led to the development of various adsorption methods for removing these contaminants from water sources. In this study, functionalized organosilica materials were synthesized from bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl] amine using the sol-gel method. The surface amino groups of the organosilica were converted into amine hydrochloride groups. Their adsorption properties were evaluated using salts of perfluorooctanoic acid, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid, and perfluorobutanesulfonic acid. Results showed excellent adsorption capacity of the materials. Adsorption of PFAS leads to particle agglomeration and flotation of the spent material. A column …
Decomposition In Urban Forest Patches Across A New York-New Jersey Urbanization Gradient, Cailee Sprouse
Decomposition In Urban Forest Patches Across A New York-New Jersey Urbanization Gradient, Cailee Sprouse
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
"Urbanization causes habitat fragmentation, pollution, homogenization of soil profiles, and replacement of native flora and fauna, which can alter vital ecological processes like decomposition. It is essential to investigate the impacts urbanization may have on ecosystem functioning to better inform urban land management. Studies have shown conflicting results on the impacts of urbanization on soil decomposition rates, with some showing higher, lower, or similar decomposition rates in urban soils compared to rural soils. This study aims to investigate the effects of urbanization and soil characteristics on decomposition rates in three urban forest patches in New Jersey and New York using …
Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Does Self-Compassion Buffer Against The Potential Effects Of Perfectionism And Psychopathology On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury?, Natasha Bourgoin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
University students with increased rates of reported perfectionism, anxiety, and depression, are vulnerable to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, not all students with psychological distress engage in NSSI, suggesting protective factors may help to mitigate this risk. The present study examined the relation between perfectionism and NSSI, via the mediating effects of anxiety and depression, and the moderating role of self-compassion. Participants were 338 university students (67% female; 87% White) who completed several self-report measures. Students with greater perfectionism reported higher levels of anxiety and depressive symptoms and, in turn, more NSSI engagement. Self-compassion and several self-compassionate domains attenuated connections between …

Recovery Timeframe Is A Critical Component In Preserving Carbon Stocks In Disturbed Tropical Seagrass Meadows, Taylor Renee Condron, Timothy M. Smith, Paul H. York, Nicholas J. Murray, Pere Masque, Michael A. Rasheed
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Seagrass meadows, though covering a small percentage of the ocean floor, play a critical role in marine carbon sequestration. However, the mechanisms behind this role remain uncertain due to challenges in mapping seagrass extent and flux, accounting for spatial variation in carbon storage, and incorporating site-specific histories. This study investigates the effects of short-term (≤10 years) seagrass loss on sediment carbon stocks within a large seagrass meadow in the Great Barrier Reef region. Using remote sensing data to construct a seagrass recovery timeline, combined with field sampling and assessments of ecological factors, we found higher sediment organic carbon in areas …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Amyloidogenic proteins, such as amyloid-β (Aβ), self-assemble into cross-β fibrils whose accumulation is central to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Measuring Aβ aggregation and clearance in living cells remains challenging using current cell-based assays, which are often low-throughput or not suited for real-time monitoring. This study aimed to (1) develop a robust, quantitative, and scalable fluorescence-based assay using Amytracker to monitor Aβ accumulation and clearance in an Aβ-producing neuronal cell model, and (2) validate its utility for mechanistic studies and therapeutic screening. We established a plate-based fluorescence assay using Amytracker in MC65 neuronal AD model expressing the Amyloid precursor protein C-terminal fragment …
