Where Am I?: The Absence Of The Black Male From The E-Suite, Brian Bedford
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
According to current U.S. labor statistics, Black male executives are underrepresented in every major industry in the United States. Common impediments preventing Black males from occupying executive positions include workplace white supremacy, biculturalism, repressive structures, and disparate career development. Using critical race theory as a framework, this basic qualitative study investigated the experiences of eight male executives, five Black and three white, from various industries to understand their perceptions and perspectives on race and racism, and examined their workplace lived experiences to study why there are not more Black males in the e-suite. Moreover, strategies to increase Black male representation …

Effectiveness Of Take-Home Naloxone Programs In Athletic Training: An Evidence-To-Practice Review, Michael J. Palm, Amanda N. Flanscha, Zachary K. Winkelmann
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
The number of opioid overdoses (ODs) has risen in recent years and has become more complex due to the co-involvement of both prescription and illicit opioid drug use. Provisional programs for take-home naloxone (a medication designed to rapidly reverse opiate OD symptoms) kits have been distributed to combat this potentially fatal epidemic. Although there is strong evidence to support the efficacy of naloxone in the reversal of opiate OD, there is limited evidence to support the efficacy of take-home naloxone (THN) kits. The purpose of this evidence-to-practice review was to summarize a systematic review on the efficacy of THN programs. …

Soil NO3– affects microbial processes, plant productivity, and environmental N losses. However, the ability to measure soil NO3– is limited by labor-intensive sampling and laboratory analyses. Hence, temporal variation in soil solution NO3– concentration is poorly understood. We evaluated a new potentiometric sensor that continuously measures soil solution NO3– concentration with unprecedented specificity due to a novel membrane that serves as a barrier to interfering anions. First, we compared sensor and salt extraction-based measurements of soil NO3– in well-controlled laboratory conditions. Second, using 60 d of in situ soil NO …

Synthesis And Biological Activities Of Chalcone Derivatives, Ade Danova
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chalcones have drawn attention due to the simple structures and wide spectra of biological activities. Their core structure bearing diaryl rings with α,β-unsaturated ketone was generated easily using Claisen-Schmidt condensation. In this study, one hundred and eight chalcones and their derivatives were synthesized; among them, twenty-five were disclosed as new compounds. All synthesized chalcones were well-characterized by means of spectroscopy and evaluated for their anti-cancer (A549) and anti-inflammatory activities, and α-glucosidase inhibition. For anti-cancer activity, 3',4',5'-trimethoxyphenyl on the A ring, and hydroxy and methoxy groups on the B ring exhibited high potent inhibitory activity against A549 with three best potent …
Synergistic Effect Of Metal Ion Reduction And Nano-Titania Photocatalysis For Cyanate Degradation And Its Life Cycle Assessment, Atima Dubsok
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Environmental consequences of mining are becoming increasingly complex, especially the utilization of toxic chemicals in the mineral process. Specifically, in the gold mining operations, the various species of remaining cyanide in the tailings stream are potentially toxic and hazardous to human health and the environment. Although many studies have spotlighted on cyanide toxicity and their environmental health impacts, the focus on possible treatment techniques that can be applied to treat other toxic species is however limited. Cyanate, for instance, is an intermediate product from the destruction of cyanide in wastewater and known as a neurotoxic substance. Altogether, the remaining of …

This study uses remotely sensed data that were accessed from the System for Multidisciplinary Research and Applications (NASA Giovanni) to study environmental change in the Philippines’ coast. Monthly averaged sea surface temperature series from around the Philippines indicate that the Philippines follow the global trend in ocean temperature increase and show the increase of about 0.50C within two decades. Despite the high variability in temperature, the linear regressions displayed for all seasons show an …
A Deep Learning Model For Predicting Long Non-Coding Rna And Messenger Rna With Model Interpretation, Rattaphon Lin
A Deep Learning Model For Predicting Long Non-Coding Rna And Messenger Rna With Model Interpretation, Rattaphon Lin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play important roles in many biological processes and are found to be associated with several diseases. The development of next-generation sequencing technologies has discovered numerous unannotated transcripts. However, classifying these unannotated transcripts by using biological experiments is very time-consuming and expensive. Thus, a computational approach is considered as an alternative solution which is faster and cheaper. Many existing lncRNA identification tools are available, these tools lack an explanation of which features contributed to their prediction results. Here, we present Xlnc1DCNN, a tool for distinguishing long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) from protein-coding transcripts (PCTs) together with a prediction …

Profiling Of Fda-Approved And Clinical Trial Drugs Revealed Shared Cytotoxicity And Collateral Sensitivity In Resistant (H69ar) And Non-Resistant (H69) Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells. (Drug Repurposing In Cancer Chemotherapy), Pius Reyderg Agyemang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Some cancers are capable of “spitting out” drugs being fed to them, metaphorically speaking, becoming resistant to what were previously effective chemotherapeutics. In small-cell lung cancer (SCLC), an overexpression of a membrane protein (MRP1) and its transport activity can lead to chemotherapy failure. However, this study showed that certain drugs are selectively cytotoxic (exhibit collateral sensitivity) to MRP1-overexpressed SCLC (H69AR) cells. In this study, three drugs (Erlotinib, Pyrimethamine, Fludarabine) were identified to exhibit a dose-dependent collateral sensitivity on H69AR with IC50 values of ~3.5 μM, ~2 μM, and ~20 μM respectively. Halting the transport activity of the MRP1 with 25 …
Free-Living Diazotrophs And The Nitrogen Cycle In Natural Grassland Revealed By Culture Dependent And Independent Approaches, Amrit Koirala
Free-Living Diazotrophs And The Nitrogen Cycle In Natural Grassland Revealed By Culture Dependent And Independent Approaches, Amrit Koirala
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biological nitrogen fixation contributes to half of the global supply of nitrogen to the biosphere. It is carried out by a diverse group of prokaryotes called diazotrophs via the nitrogenase enzyme. Nitrogen fixation research is focused on the narrow group of symbiotic diazotrophs, and the vast majority of free-living diazotrophs which contribute significantly to fixed nitrogen are yet to be explored. The goal of this research was to access phylogeny of diazotrophs considering the most up-to-date genomic information and apply that knowledge to understand the diversity of free-living diazotrophs in a natural grassland ecosystem, both by culture dependent and independent …

The importance of next generation sequencing (NGS) rises in cancer research as accessing this key technology becomes easier for researchers. The sequence data created by NGS technologies must be processed by various bioinformatics algorithms within a pipeline in order to convert raw data to meaningful information. Mapping and variant calling are the two main steps of these analysis pipelines, and many algorithms are available for these steps. Therefore, detailed benchmarking of these algorithms in different scenarios is crucial for the efficient utilization of sequencing technologies. In this study, we compared the performance of twelve pipelines (three mapping and four variant …

Positive Regulation Of Tnfr1 Signaling Via Sh3 Recognition Motif, Fatma Ece Çopuroğlu, Fatma Zehra Hapi̇l Zevkli̇ler, Şükran Burçak Yoldaş, Osman Ni̇dai̇ Özeş
Turkish Journal of Biology
TNF is a pleiotropic cytokine and shows its biological function by binding to its receptors called TNFR1 and TNFR2. While TNFR1 induces apoptosis by activation of caspase-8 via the "death domain", it also activates IKKα/β, MKK3/6, MKK4/7 by activation of TAK1. Although the TNFR1 signaling pathway is known by in large, it is not known how AKT and MAPKs p38, ERK1/2, and JNK1/2 are activated. The presence of a proline-rich PPAP region, (P448PAP451, a binding site for the SH3 domain-containing proteins) very close to the C-terminus promoted us to determine whether this region has any role in the TNFR1 signal …

Negative Regulation Of Diminutive Cancer Regulator Through Differentiation And Microrna Pathway Components In Drosophila Cells, Sumira Malik
Turkish Journal of Biology
Drosophila model is intensively studied for the development of cancer. The diminutive (dMyc), a homolog of the human MYC gene, is responsible for cell- apoptosis and its upregulation is responsible for determining the fate of cancerous growth in humans and Drosophila model. This work implores the requirement of dMyc and its expression as one of the major regulator of cancer with other proteins and repression of dMyc mRNA in Drosophila S2 cells. Here we report protein complex of Argonaute 1 (AGO1), Bag of marbles (Bam), and Brain tumor (Brat) proteins and not the individual factor of this complex repression of …

Compensatory Expression Regulation Of Highly Homologous Proteins Hnrnpa1 Andhnrnpa2, Yan Chang, Xiao Feng Lu, Jia Ying Qiu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein (HNRNP) A1 and A2 are the most abundant HNRNPs with nearly identical functions, and play important roles in regulating gene expression at multiple levels (i.e. transcription, posttranscription, and translation). However, the expression and regulation mechanism of HNRNPA1 and A2 themselves remain unclear. In this study, the amino acid sequences of HNRNPA1 and HNRNPA2 were compared and found to have 78% and 86% homology in key functional domains. Transfection of HEK293 cells with small interfering RNA and overexpression vectors of HNRNPA1 and HNRNPA2 demonstrated that HNRNPA1 and HNRNPA2 paralogs regulate each other?s expression in a compensatory manner at …

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is stored as an important carbon and energy source in bacterial cells. For biomedical applications, gram-positive bacteria can be better sources of PHAs, since they lack outer membrane lipopolysaccharide. Although gram-positive Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2) has been indicated as a high potential PHA producer, phaC gene that encodes the key enzyme PHA synthase in the metabolic pathway is not determined in its genome. BLAST search results of the GenBank database argued that SCO7613 could specify a putative polyhydroxyalkanoate synthase (PhaC) responsible for PHA biosynthesis. Deduced amino acid sequence of SCO7613 showed the presence of conserved lipase box like sequence, …

In this study, 341 Bacillus sp. strains were isolated from agricultural soils of Turkey. The potent extracellular lipase producer was selected. It was identified by 16S rRNA, named as Bacillus cereus ATA179. Optimal nutritional and physical parameters for lipase production were determined. Sucrose as the carbon source, (NH4)2HPO4 as the nitrogen source, CaCl2 as the metal ion were obtained. The best results of physical parameters were stated at 45°C, pH 7.0, shaking rate 50 rpm, inoculation amount 7% and inoculum age 24 h. ATA179 strain showed a 51% increase in enzyme production in the modified medium created by optimizing nutritional …

Stevia rebaudiana is a medicinal plant recommended to diabetic or obese patients as an alternative sweetener owing to its low-calorie property. Previous studies have found that the stevioside level is highest at the time of flower bud formation and lowest at the time of preceding and following flower bud formation. Hence, this study aims to identify the genes involved in the flowering of local S. rebaudiana accession MS007 by investigating the transcriptomic data of two stages of growth, before flowering (BF) and after flowering (AF) that were deposited under accession number SRX6362785 and SRX6362784 at the NCBI SRA database. The …
