Synthesis Of Imidazo-1,4-Oxazinone Derivatives And Investigation Of Reaction Mechanism, Volkan Taşdemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
In this study, nine different C-2 aroyl imidazole derivatives were synthesized in a one pot reaction with two steps, and the reduction reactions of these derivatives with NaBH4 were carried out under mild conditions. Substitution reaction of obtained imidazo methanol derivatives with chloroacetylchloride reagent and ring reaction of substitution products were investigated. It was determined that 1,4-imidazoxazinone derivative was obtained as a result of the cyclization reaction. The intermediate products obtained during the cyclization reaction were isolated, and the path of the reaction under different conditions was discussed.

The Involvement Of The Induction Of Anthocyanin Biosynthesis And Transport In Toxic Boron Responsive Regulation In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Ceyhun Kayihan
The Involvement Of The Induction Of Anthocyanin Biosynthesis And Transport In Toxic Boron Responsive Regulation In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Ceyhun Kayihan
Turkish Journal of Botany
Recently, boron (B) has been found to form a complex with anthocyanin, which could be evidence for the B tolerance mechanisms that reduce free B in the leaf tissues of plants. However, the molecular mechanism of anthocyanin biosynthesis and transport has not been satisfactorily elucidated in plants exposed to toxic B. Therefore, the changes in expression levels of some of the phenylpropanoid pathway genes, early and late flavonoid biosynthetic genes, and transcription factors related to anthocyanin biosynthesis and transport were determined in Arabidopsis thaliana under B toxicity. Accordingly, 1 mM boric acid treatment did not cause any significant change in …

Using chemicals known as inhibitors of chromatin remodeling enzymes is a useful approach in understanding the regulation machinery that contributes to the maintenance of or conversion to a pluri- and totipotent states of the cells in multicellular organisms. They can serve as tools to reveal the molecular and cellular mechanisms required for reprogramming. A deeper understanding of reprogramming pathways that drive the cell into a dedifferentiated state might help us enhance plant micropropagation and green biotechnology applications. Chaetocin is one of the histone methyltransferase inhibitors known as key drivers in several cellular processes. It was shown that chaetocin enhanced the …

Auxin-Induced Degradation Of Dream Proteins, Lin-9 And Lin-54, In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Karli E. Chosa
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The Dp, Retinoblastoma, E2F, And MuvB (DREAM) complex mediates transcriptional repression and is highly conserved throughout a number of species, including vertebrates, Drosophila melanogaster, and Caenorhabditis elegans. Differing from mammalian DREAM, C.elegans DRM, appears to act solely in a repressive role, with the MuvB subcomplex (LIN-9, LIN-37, LIN-52, LIN-53, and LIN-54) playing a key role in the repression of genes. In this study, we use the auxin-inducible degron (AID) system, an effective, fast-acting, tool used in the degradation of degron-tagged proteins to individually deplete two key proteins of the MuvB subcomplex, LIN-9 and LIN-54, in C. elegans. The …

Age, Growth, And Otolith Microchemistry Of Golden Tilefish (Lopholatilus Chamaeleonticeps) In The Nw Atlantic, Katy Dawson
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Knowledge of life-history characteristics and patterns of connectivity are important parameters to fisheries management, especially for species inhabiting hard to reach environments, such as the deep-sea. Golden Tilefish (Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps) are slow growing, long-lived, demersal species that exhibit a patchy distribution along the continental shelf-edge of the NW Atlantic Ocean. Golden Tilefish create burrows in the clay sediment and maintain high site fidelity. These characteristics suggest the possibility of localized subpopulations across the species’ distribution; an important consideration for the resilience of this species to fishing pressure. My objectives are (1) to estimate age, and model growth of …
Comparative Study Of Biocides And Nanoparticles On Bacterial Microorganisms, Rehab Alhajjar
Comparative Study Of Biocides And Nanoparticles On Bacterial Microorganisms, Rehab Alhajjar
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The increase in antimicrobial-resistant bacteria has posed challenges to treating resistant diseases. Antimicrobials such as nanoparticles (NPs) and biocides are commonly used to control microbial growth in household and industrial settings. Several studies have shown that bacteria that become resistant to biocides can also resist antibiotics. There are fewer reports of resistance to nanoparticles. Our study goals were to compare the environmental effects of biocides and nanoparticles by investigating their impacts on stream microbial community structure, the mechanism of bacterial resistance, and their interactions with natural organic matter (NOM). Our results showed that biocides dramatically altered microbial community composition and …
Marangoni Propulsion Of Active Particles, Saeed Jafari Kang
Marangoni Propulsion Of Active Particles, Saeed Jafari Kang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
We study the surfing motion of active particles located at a flat liquid-gas interface. The particles create and maintain a surface tension gradient by asymmetrically discharging a surface tension-reducing agent. We employ theory and numerical simulation to investigate the Marangoni propulsion of these active surfers. First, we use the reciprocal theorem to establish a relationship between the propulsion speed and the release of the active chemical. This theoretical relation is utilized to examine the effect of wall confinement and geometry on the Marangoni-driven motion of active particle when the inertial effects are negligible and when the transports of the released …

The model is executed through a novel …
The Effect Of Nutrition On Longevity And Fertility In Diverse Drosophila: A Tor-Mediated Process, Tessa E. Steenwinkel
The Effect Of Nutrition On Longevity And Fertility In Diverse Drosophila: A Tor-Mediated Process, Tessa E. Steenwinkel
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Nutrition and growth are strongly linked, but not much is known about how nutrition leads to growth. To understand the connection between nutrition through diet, growth and/or proliferation, we need to study the phenotypes resulting from the activation and inhibition of central metabolic pathways. Here I use the model organism Drosophila melanogaster (D. mel.) and three non-model Drosophila species with different dietary needs, Drosophila guttifera (D. gut.), Drosophila deflecta (D. def.), and Drosophila tripunctata (D. tri.), to study the effects of dietary amino acid availability in these diverse flies on fecundity and …

Hydrodynamics Of Vibrating Perforated Plates, Muhammad Usman
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
The objective of this Ph.D. project is to study the hydrodynamic response of oscillating perforated plates by utilizing analytical and numerical methods. Specifically, we will examine whether the permeable plates offer superior hydrodynamic stability than their impermeable equivalents. First, we will computationally investigate the linear hydrodynamic response of vibrating perforated plates in an unbounded domain in the asymptotic limit of small KC, i.e., KC → 0. We will simulate various porosities and aspect ratios for a wide range of oscillatory Reynolds number (denoted by β) and seek to draw a comparison between our findings and the analytical works. Next, we …

Puerarin-Coated Gold Nanoparticles (Pue-Aunps) Synthesized Via Green Synthetic Route: A New Colorimetric Probe For The Detection Of Ciprofloxacin, Tasneem Zehra, Faiqa Ahsan, Muhammad Ali Versiani, Sana Wahid, Sajid Jahangir, Muhammad Raza Shah
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Puerarin-coated gold nanoparticles (PUE-AuNPs) synthesized via green synthetic route, a new colorimetric sensor, efficiently detected the ciprofloxacin (CP) in tap water and cow milk samples. The PUE-AuNPs were characterized by UV-visible, FTIR, AFM, and DLS techniques and were found to be spherical with an average size of approximately 19-20 nm. FTIR spectrum confirms that functional groups such as -OH, -C=O, -CO and -C=C were responsible for the reduction of gold (III) chloride trihydrate. These functional groups acted as capping agents to form AuNPs. The PUE-AuNPs sensor was proved to be selective and sensitive for the detection of CP through colorimetric …

A Fluorescent Sensor-Based Tripodal-Bodipy For Cu (Ii) Ions: Bio-Imaging On Cells, Ahmed Nuri̇ Kurşunlu, Mustafa Özmen, Ersi̇n Güler
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
A general synthetic method was improved to synthesize a chemosensor based on a tripodal Bodipy (t-BODIPY) structure. The product and its intermediate products were successfully prepared and fully characterized. The metal ion sensing performance of the tripodal compound was evaluated by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopies. According to the obtained data, t-BODIPY is a selective and sensitive fluorescence probe for detection of Cu2+ ions in the presence and in the absence of competing ions. This chemosensor presents relatively a low detection limit of 5.4 x10-7 M for Cu2+. Bio-imaging studies on living yeast cells suggest that t-BODIPY has some advantages over …

Development, Optimization, And In Vitro Characterization Of Different Anesthetic Wound Products, Alia Alshammari
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACTAcute and chronic wounds can be a significant source of pain. In the past, pain associated with chronic wounds has been perceived as an inevitable complication of wound care. Fortunately, recent approaches in wound care have developed strategies to prevent and reduce pain when carrying out wound care. Local anesthetics have been used to that end. Lidocaine is the most widely used topical anesthetic in wound care. However, literature on topical Lidocaine has focused almost exclusively on the clinical application on intact skin. This dissertation aims to advance our understanding of anesthetic wound product formulation and development. Anesthetic wound ointments …
The House Of Love And The Mental Hospital: Zones Of Care And Recovery In South India, Murphy Halliburton
The House Of Love And The Mental Hospital: Zones Of Care And Recovery In South India, Murphy Halliburton
Publications and Research
The Movement for Global Mental Health has defined the person suffering psychopathology in low-income countries as an abused and suffering subject in need of saving by biomedical psychiatry. Based on fieldwork in Kerala, South India, carried out at psychiatric clinics and a psychosocial rehabilitation centre, this paper examines patients’ experiences of illness, the degree and quality of family support, and attributions made to the role of ‘sneham’, or love, in recovery. The role of love and family involvement may help explain the provocative finding by WHO epidemiological studies that ‘developing’ countries – and India in particular – showed better rates …
Rotavirus A Genome Segments Show Distinct Segregation And Codon Usage Patterns, Irene Hoxie, John J. Dennehy
Rotavirus A Genome Segments Show Distinct Segregation And Codon Usage Patterns, Irene Hoxie, John J. Dennehy
Publications and Research
Reassortment of the Rotavirus A (RVA) 11-segment dsRNA genome may generate new genome constellations that allow RVA to expand its host range or evade immune responses. Reassortment may also produce phylogenetic incongruities and weakly linked evolutionary histories across the 11 segments, obscuring reassortment-specific epistasis and changes in substitution rates. To determine the co-segregation patterns of RVA segments, we generated time-scaled phylogenetic trees for each of the 11 segments of 789 complete RVA genomes isolated from mammalian hosts and compared the segments’ geodesic distances. We found that segments 4 (VP4) and 9 (VP7) occupied significantly different tree spaces from each other …

Geosciences: Faculty Publications
A reference section for the Otavi Group (Damara Supergroup) in the East Kaoko Zone near Ongongo is proposed and described. The section is easily accessible, well exposed, suitable for field excursions, and well documented in terms of carbonate lithofacies, depositional sequences and stableisotope chemostratigraphy. The late Tonian Ombombo Subgroup is 355 m thick above the basal Beesvlakte Formation, which is not included in the section due to poor outcrop and complex structure. The earlymiddle Cryogenian Abenab Subgroup is 636 m thick and the early Ediacaran Tsumeb Subgroup is 1020 m thick. While the section is complete in terms of formations …
Improvement Of Selection Criteria And Prioritisation For Neoantigen Prediction, Phorutai Pearngam
Improvement Of Selection Criteria And Prioritisation For Neoantigen Prediction, Phorutai Pearngam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
A tumour-specific neoantigen-based cancer vaccine is a potentially powerful treatment option, which utilises unique mutated peptides from tumour cells to boost the immune response and selectively attack cancer cells. Thus, the characterisation of the specifically targeted peptides that can be selectively recognised by the immune system is essential for this approach. However, a major problem in neoantigen prediction is obtaining false positives, leading to poor outcomes in clinical research and practice. This thesis aims to address some of the computational issues in neoantigen prediction, including developing more reliable statistics for assessing peptide binding to a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) protein …
