Disrupted Identities And Forced Nomads: A Post-Disaster Legacy Of Neocolonialism In The Island Of Barbuda, Lesser Antilles, Sophia Perdikaris, Rebecca Boger, Edith Gonzalez, Emira Ibrahimpašić, Jennifer D. Adams

School of Global Integrative Studies: Faculty Publications

In the aftermath of the forced evacuation of the island of Barbuda due to Hurricane Irma, the Barbudan people have experienced an exile and return to a ‘new’ geographical, political, and economic context, albeit on the same island. With the specter of climate change and the potential impacts on island communities and nations, we use Barbuda, sister island of Antigua in the Lesser Antilles, to examine the trajectory of nomadic identities as they navigate changes that threaten contemporary land relationships and culture. Since its first permanent settlement in the 17th Century, the island geography of Barbuda has been fundamental to …

“Born Under My Heart”: Adoptive Parents’ Use Of Metaphors To Make Sense Of Their Past, Present, And Future, Lucas Hackenburg, Toni Morgan, Eve Brank

Center on Children, Families, and the Law: Faculty Publications

Metaphors provide the opportunity to make sense of our experiences and share them with others. The current research qualitatively examined interviews with adoptive parents who had adopted through intercountry or private adoptions. Throughout their interviews, each participant used at least one metaphor in describing their experiences of adopting and raising their child. Overarchingly, the metaphor of “Adoption is a journey” encapsulated parents’ experiences. To demonstrate the journey, parents used metaphors to describe the past, present, and future. Metaphors of the past focused on their child’s trauma and the origin of how the child came to join their family. Metaphors used …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

BACKGROUND: Wild pigs (Sus scrofa) cause widespread environmental and economic damage, and as a result are subjected to extensive control. Current management strategies have proven insufficient, and there is growing interest in use of toxicants to control invasive populations of this species. In 2017 a low-dose warfarin bait was federally approved for use in controlling wild pigs in the United States. However, no states have allowed use of this bait due to unanswered questions regarding welfare concerns, field efficacy, and non-target impacts.

RESULTS: All captive wild pigs fed 0.005% warfarin baits in no choice feeding trials succumbed in an average …

Menstrual Dignity And The Bar Exam, Marcy L. Karin, Margaret E. Johnson, Elizabeth B. Cooper

Journal Articles

This Article examines the issue of menstruation and the administration of the bar exam. Although such problems are not new, over the summer and fall of 2020, test takers and commentators took to social media to critique state board of law examiners’ (“BOLE”) policies regarding menstruation. These problems persist. Menstruators worry that if they unexpectedly bleed during the exam, they may not have access to appropriately sized and constructed menstrual products or may be prohibited from accessing the bathroom. Personal products that are permitted often must be carried in a clear, plastic bag. Some express privacy concerns that the see-through …

Coronavirus research has gained tremendous attention because of the COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (nCoV or SARS-CoV-2). In this review, we highlight recent studies that provide atomic-resolution structural details important for the development of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that can be used therapeutically and prophylactically and for vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. Structural studies with SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing mAbs have revealed a diverse set of binding modes on the spike’s receptor-binding domain and N-terminal domain and highlight alternative targets on the spike. We consider this structural work together with mAb effects in vivo to suggest correlations between structure …

Three Essays On The High-Speed Rail Network In China, Shiyu Cheng Jan 2021

Three Essays On The High-Speed Rail Network In China, Shiyu Cheng

Theses and Dissertations--Economics

My dissertation consists of three essays that study the economic consequences of China’s high-speed rail (HSR) expansion.

In the first essay, I use the college admission cutoff scores to reveal students’ college preferences under the enrollment quota. By exploiting the quasi-experimental variation in whether or not college cities are connected by the HSR network, I document a two-point increase in the cutoff scores following a HSR station opening in the college city using difference-in-difference (DD) approach. Colleges in the megacities experience a larger increase in cutoff scores after the station opening. These findings suggest that the HSR network stimulates “brain …

The Geography Of The New Economy, R. D. Norton Jan 2021

The Geography Of The New Economy, R. D. Norton

Web Book of Regional Science

As discussions of the New Economy become increasingly common, it is also clear that there the term requires some clarification. There’s a macroeconomic version, able to keep on growing rapidly without inflation, and there’s a microeconomic version, apparently driven by a new kind of firm. There’s the digital version, likely to be identified with an Information Age. Then there are variants that focus on management, labor relations, sustainable development, and other topics as well. What most new-economy approaches have in common is the idea that computers and in particular networked PCs have changed things in a fundamental way. That is …

How Emotions Shape Feminist Coalitions, Nancy Whittier Jan 2021

How Emotions Shape Feminist Coalitions, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Publications

This paper develops a framework for conceptualizing the emotional dimensions of coalitions, with particular focus on how power operates through emotion in different varieties of feminist coalitions. The paper proposes three interrelated areas in which emotion shapes feminist coalitions. 1) Feelings toward coalition partners: Feelings of mistrust, anger, fear or their reverse grow from histories of interaction and unequal power. These make up the emotional landscape of intersectional coalitions, which operate through a tension between negative emotions and attempts at empathy or mutual acceptance. 2) Shared feelings: Feminist coalitions build on shared fear of threat or anger at a common …

Purification And Activity Analysis Of A Highly Active Recombinant Catalase From Psychrophilic Bacterium Psychrobacter Cryohaloentis, Andrew Stewart Jan 2021

Purification And Activity Analysis Of A Highly Active Recombinant Catalase From Psychrophilic Bacterium Psychrobacter Cryohaloentis, Andrew Stewart

Honors Program Theses

To date, the genus Psychrobacter includes 37 recognized bacterial species isolated from different sources ranging from Siberian permafrost (P. cryohalolentis) to seal feces (P. lutiphocae). Due to its diverse ecological niches, several species belonging to the genus have different enzymatic activities with potential applications in bioremediation and the food industry. In this study, a bioprospecting approach was used to perform a in depth analysis of a Psychrobacter-like bacterial strain isolated from goose feces (designated as Psychrobacter unknown). The phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene and homologous sequence studies suggest that the strain may represent a novel species of the Psychrobacter …

Antimicrobial Activity Of Silver(I) Cyanoximates Against Streptococcus Mutans Ua159 Planktonic Growth And Biofilm Formation, Sarah Hameer Jan 2021

Antimicrobial Activity Of Silver(I) Cyanoximates Against Streptococcus Mutans Ua159 Planktonic Growth And Biofilm Formation, Sarah Hameer

Honors Program Theses

Streptococcus mutans is identified as the causative agent of human dental caries, with biofilm formation serving as its most important virulence factor. Biofilms are typically more challenging to treat than planktonic or free-floating bacteria, adding to the already challenging issue of antibiotic resistance. This has led to an increased need for the discovery of alternative antibacterial compounds other than antibiotics. Among these compounds, silver(I) cyanoximates have been demonstrated to have antibacterial activity against a variety of microorganisms, specifically those that colonize in-dwelling medical devices. To assess the antibacterial properties of two silver(I) cyanoximate compounds, silver(I) nitrosodicyanomethanide (Ag(ACO)) and silver(I)α-oximido-(2-benzoyl)acetonitrile (Ag(BCO)), …

Machine Ethics, Ethics For Machines: Context-Based Modeling For Machines Making Ethical Decisions, Jaysa Ramirez Jan 2021

Machine Ethics, Ethics For Machines: Context-Based Modeling For Machines Making Ethical Decisions, Jaysa Ramirez

Honors Program Theses

Machine ethics is an emerging, interdisciplinary field that focuses on if – and if so, how – machines can make ethical decisions autonomously. Through a close study of two positions on whether or not machines can be moral agents, this project sheds light on a clash of assumptions that is keeping the field of machine ethics in limbo. After making this clash of assumptions clear, I raise two questions which get at the scope of machine ethics itself: 1) What makes ethical decision-making different from other kinds of decision-making? 2) To what extent can machines engage with ethics and make …

Ipv At The Margins: Conceptualizing Gaps In The Survivor Safety Net For Lower-Income Black Women, Cristina Toppin Jan 2021

Ipv At The Margins: Conceptualizing Gaps In The Survivor Safety Net For Lower-Income Black Women, Cristina Toppin

Honors Program Theses

This paper evaluates U.S. social and criminal justice policies in the context of intimate partner violence (IPV) against lower-income Black women in the U.S. Theories from the literature on IPV and gender-based violence (GBV) at-large, as well as the literature on inequity, are utilized to examine how entrenched racist, sexist, and classist ideas influence policymaking. It is argued that this process has resulted in policies that reinforce the higher rates of IPV against lower-income Black women as compared to their upper-income white peers. Two overarching research questions are addressed to support this argument. First, how have pejorative stereotypes against Black …
