Feeding Kinematics And Prey Capture Modulation Of Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus Plumbeus), Diana Butsch Jan 2021

Feeding Kinematics And Prey Capture Modulation Of Sandbar Sharks (Carcharhinus Plumbeus), Diana Butsch

Theses & ETDs

This study investigated the feeding kinematics and prey capture modulation of 3 adult sandbar sharks (Carcharhinus plumbeus). High-speed footage was shot as the sharks were fed a diet of capelin, herring, and squid. The sandbar shark was confirmed to be a primarily ram feeder, like other requiem sharks. The order of kinematic events during the expansive and compressive phases was consistent with most sharks, but with a lack of cranial elevation. Each successful prey capture was categorized as either an engulfment (feeding event ends with prey fully inside the mouth) or bite (feeding event ends with prey held in the …

“The Story I Tell, The Self I Create; Understanding Transnational Indian Identity Through A Kaleidoscope Of Lenses: Literature, Theatre, And Ethnography”, Annaporva G. Green

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is interested in transnational identity; someone who is connected to more than one nation state either socially, politically, or culturally. One is an insider and an outsider no matter where they are. I question that dynamic as I come to terms with my American identity and my Indian biological roots. Chapter 1 focuses on In an Antique Land by Amitav Ghosh, and his quest to follow the physical and paper trail of an enslaved Indian figure from the 12th century. Ghosh describes his struggles to obtain resources for his research, which parallels own inability to gain access to …

Studying The Effects Of Increased Seawater Temperature On Symbiodinium Within The Coral Species Pocillopora Damicornis (Linnaeus, 1758)., Jade Matzen

Theses & ETDs

Global warming continues to impact biomes. One such system that is heavily influenced by global warming are marine ecosystems and more specifically, the coral reefs that provide shelters for more than 25% of all marine species. Through the use of microscopy, the Symbiodinium within these corals can be examined and quantified to see how the thermal fluctuations affect them. For the current study, Pocillopora damicornis was selected as it is commonly found in tropical waters in the Indo-Pacific region and is a reef-building coral. Corals were fragmented and separated into six tanks, pairs were labeled as either the control, temperature …

Altered Natural Dyes As Alternatives To Expensive Ruthenium-Complex Sensitizers In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hunter Sullivan Jan 2021

Altered Natural Dyes As Alternatives To Expensive Ruthenium-Complex Sensitizers In Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells, Hunter Sullivan

Theses & ETDs

Solar energy is one of many forms of renewable energy which seeks to replace the use of harmful fossil fuels for the production of energy by humans worldwide. One of the ways to make this more viable is to decrease the production cost of solar technologies, without also decreasing their efficiency. Natural dyes extracted from plants can be used as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells in order to decrease their production cost compared to the commonly used and most efficient ruthenium-complex sensitizer, N719 dye. However, natural dyes have been held back from wide-scale commercial implementation due to the critical trade-off …

Tobacco Reborn: The Rise Of E-Cigarettes And Regulatory Approaches, Daniel G. Aaron Jan 2021

Tobacco Reborn: The Rise Of E-Cigarettes And Regulatory Approaches, Daniel G. Aaron

Utah Law Faculty Scholarship

This paper examines e-cigarettes, FDA-regulated products which heat nicotine-containing fluid into an aerosol to be breathed into the lungs. Recent data show that e-cigarettes are used by about one-fifth of U.S. high schoolers. Given that we have, in the Surgeon General’s words, reached an epidemic of youth e-cigarette use, it is worth asking how a product within FDA jurisdiction became a serious threat to to 3.6 million youth.

This article will review the law surrounding e-cigarettes and the history of FDA’s attempts to regulate them. Administrative law doctrines instruct us that increased presidential control will rein in misbehaving agencies by …

Tracking The Subcellular Localization Of Surface Proteins In Staphylococcus Aureus By Immunofluorescence Microscopy, Salvatore J. Scaffidi, Mac A. Shebes, Wenqi Yu Jan 2021

Tracking The Subcellular Localization Of Surface Proteins In Staphylococcus Aureus By Immunofluorescence Microscopy, Salvatore J. Scaffidi, Mac A. Shebes, Wenqi Yu

Molecular Biosciences Faculty Publications

Surface proteins of Staphylococcus aureus and other Gram-positive bacteria play essential roles in bacterial colonization and host-microbe interactions. Surface protein precursors containing a YSIRK/GXXS signal peptide are translocated across the septal membrane at mid-cell, anchored to the cell wall peptidoglycan at the cross-wall compartment, and presented on the new hemispheres of the daughter cells following cell division. After several generations of cell division, these surface proteins will eventually cover the entire cell surface. To understand how these proteins travel from the bacterial cytoplasm to the cell surface, we describe a series of immunofluorescence microscopy protocols designed to detect the stepwise …

Spatial Spread Of White-Nose Syndrome In North America, 2006-2018, Andrew M. Kramer, Alex Mercier, Sean Maher, Yaw Kumi-Ansu, Sarah Bowden

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

White-nose syndrome has caused massive mortality in multiple bat species and spread across much of North America, making it one of the most destructive wildlife diseases on record. This has also resulted in it being one of the most well-documented wildlife disease outbreaks, making it possible to look for changes in the pattern of spatial spread over time. We fit a series of spatial interaction models to the United States county-level observations of the pathogenic fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, that causes white-nose syndrome. Models included the distance between caves, cave abundance, measures of winter length and winter onset, and species …

Deep Learning For Supervised Classification Of Temporal Data In Ecology, César Capinha, Ana Ceia-Hasse, Andrew M. Kramer, Christiaan Meijer Jan 2021

Deep Learning For Supervised Classification Of Temporal Data In Ecology, César Capinha, Ana Ceia-Hasse, Andrew M. Kramer, Christiaan Meijer

Integrative Biology Faculty and Staff Publications

Temporal data is ubiquitous in ecology and ecologists often face the challenge of accurately differentiating these data into predefined classes, such as biological entities or ecological states. The usual approach consists of transforming the time series into user-defined features and then using these features as predictors in conventional statistical or machine learning models. Here we suggest the use of deep learning models as an alternative to this approach. Recent deep learning techniques can perform the classification directly from the time series, eliminating subjective and resource-consuming data transformation steps, and potentially improving classification results. We describe some of the deep learning …

The Evaluation Of A Soft Skills Curriculum In Athletic Training Education: A Mixed Methods Study, Emily Duckett Jan 2021

The Evaluation Of A Soft Skills Curriculum In Athletic Training Education: A Mixed Methods Study, Emily Duckett

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Athletic Training Education Competencies (2011) include exhibiting empathy and compassion as foundational behaviors of practice. Despite evidence supporting the importance of compassionate care, there is currently evidence to suggest that healthcare is experiencing a compassion crisis (Patel et al., 2019). The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways pre-professional athletic training students’ transfer knowledge from a soft skills curriculum to clinical practice. This study utilized an explanatory sequential mixed method design with a preliminary quantitative input (Morgan, 2014). Phase 1 of the study includes participants (n=19) enrolled in a pre-professional AT course. The quantitative questionnaires utilized are; the …

A Mixed Methods Examination Of Elementary Teachers’ Conceptions Of Benchmark Reading Assessments, Marie N. Derby Ed. D.

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Abstract

This study examined the case of 22 mid-Atlantic K-5 public school teachers’ conceptions of the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Reading Assessment Systems 1-3. The Namaste School District delivers ELA curriculum through reader’s and writer’s workshop. Triangulated data showed that participants held varying conceptions of the F&P. Specifically, they shared similar conceptions regarding the importance of one-on-one time with students, the amount of time it takes to administer the assessment, and the subjectivity of the F&P results. Results of this study provided similar results to other studies of teachers’ conceptions of assessment and adds to the literature debate regarding …

Organizational Resilience Of Cultural Institutions In The Time Of Covid-19, Danielle Boyce Jan 2021

Organizational Resilience Of Cultural Institutions In The Time Of Covid-19, Danielle Boyce

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

Few businesses are considered less “essential” during a pandemic than art museums, historical societies, and other cultural organizations. After the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic, most jurisdictions in the United States required institutions open to the public to close their doors. Without visitors, many cultural institutions faced an existential crisis, and scrambled to find creative ways to stay afloat. Adding to the challenge is the unusual aspect of the COVID-19 emergency, in which parents and children often worked and attended school at home. Gender disparities and professional role might also impact real and perceived threats to organizational survival. …

Policies & Services Mitigating Gender-Based Violence (Gbv): Perceptions Of African Immigrant Women In The Northeastern, U.S., & Empowering Their Human Rights., Chinenye Nwoke

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

African immigrant women’s harrowing experiences of gender based violence (GBV) is a violation of human rights and requires a systematic policy attention (USAID, 2012). The theoretical groundwork for this study is macro-oriented, utilizing the socio-cultural theories associating cultural acceptance and gender roles to incidents of violence against women. The connection between African immigrant women and socio-cultural theories is embedded in African social and cultural conditions typically encouraging the likelihood of domestic violence against the women. Governments are required to pursue policies towards appropriate domestic legal framework against GBV. This study investigated perceptions of African immigrant women in the northeastern, U.S. …

State Government’S Impact On Campus Services For Unaccompanied Homeless Students, Tori Nuccio Jan 2021

State Government’S Impact On Campus Services For Unaccompanied Homeless Students, Tori Nuccio

West Chester University Doctoral Projects

College campuses have been creating targeted support programs in the last decade to assist students coming from at-risk backgrounds including those who are homeless. Although research has begun to look at the impact these programs are having on the students they serve, little research has been done on how outside support has influenced the development and construct of these programs. My research addresses this gap in prior works via an exploratory study of how the existence of statewide supports, including the formation of networks, within three different cases impact colleges’ ability to build support programs. As part of a case …

Epigenetic Clock And Methylation Study Of Oocytes From A Bovine Model Of Reproductive Aging, Pawel Kordowitzki, Amin Haghani, Joseph A. Zoller, Caesar Z. Li, Ken Raj, Matthew L. Spangler, Steve Horvath Jan 2021

Epigenetic Clock And Methylation Study Of Oocytes From A Bovine Model Of Reproductive Aging, Pawel Kordowitzki, Amin Haghani, Joseph A. Zoller, Caesar Z. Li, Ken Raj, Matthew L. Spangler, Steve Horvath

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Cattle are an attractive animal model of fertility in women due to their high degree of similarity relative to follicle selection, embryo cleavage, blastocyst formation, and gestation length. To facilitate future studies of the epigenetic underpinnings of aging effects in the female reproductive axis, several DNA methylation-based biomarkers of aging (epigenetic clocks) for bovine oocytes are presented. One such clock was germane to only oocytes, while a dual-tissue clock was highly predictive of age in both oocytes and blood. Dual species clocks that apply to both humans and cattle were also developed and evaluated. These epigenetic clocks can be used …

ETSU Faculty Works

Dysfunction of the central noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems is the primary neurobiological characteristic of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Importantly, neuronal loss in the locus coeruleus (LC) that occurs in early stages of PD may accelerate progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons. Therefore, restoring the activity and function of the deficient noradrenergic system may be an important therapeutic strategy for early PD. In the present study, the lentiviral constructions of transcription factors Phox2a/2b, Hand2 and Gata3, either alone or in combination, were microinjected into the LC region of the PD model VMAT2 Lo mice at 12 and 18 month age. Biochemical analysis showed …

TO INFLUENCE?: EXPLORING THE SOCIO-ECOLOGY OF ZOO-MORPHIC IMAGERY ON THE NORTHERN COLORADO PLATEAU

Figurative zoo-morphic imagery is but one of a broad variety of created morphologically distinct depictions that can be used, both in isolation and in complexly configured modes of communication, to exploit the sensory responses of viewers. While contemporary observations of zoo-morphic petroglyphs and pictographs (i.e. rock-art) elicit varied interpretations and assignments of meaning relative to broader re-constructions of past socio-cultural systems, it is often assumed that the imagery reflects the creator’s intimate knowledge of behavior and habitat of the subject. In contemporary and recent historic times communicating …

A Model-Based Exploratory Study Of Sulfur Dioxide Dispersions From Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations In The Southeastern United States, Jesse Winchester, Rezaul Mahmood, William Rodgers, Philip J. Silva, Nanh Lovanh, Joshua D. Durkee, John Loughrin

High Plains Regional Climate Center: Staff Publications

In the Southeastern U. S. there are Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) that emit a variety of gases, including SO2. Sulfur is emitted as reduced sulfur compounds and can react in the atmosphere to produce SO2. It is expected that the concentration and spread of SO2 emissions from these sources would differ between wet and dry periods. In this research, SO2 emissions from locations representing CAFOs and its dispersion over the southeastern U.S. were simulated through sensitivity experiments using the Weather Research and Forecasting-Chemistry (WRF- Chem) model. Simulations were performed for dry periods and …

Temperamental Constellations And School Readiness: A Multivariate Approach, Andrew S. White, Kate M. Sirota, Scott R. Frohn, Sarah E. Swenson, Kathleen Moritz Rudasill

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

This study uses canonical correlation analyses to explore the relationship between mul- tiple predictors of school readiness (i.e., academic readiness, social readiness, and teacher-child relationship) and multiple temperamental traits using data from the second wave (age 54 months, n = 1226) of the longitudinal Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD; NICHD ECCRN 1993). This longitudinal study collected data on a large cohort of children and their families from birth through age 15. For academic readiness, only one temperamental constellation emerged, representing the construct of effortful control (i.e., high attentional focusing, high inhibitory con- trol). For peer interactions, …

Analysis Of The Role Of Sgs1p In Repair Of Double-Strand Dna Breaks In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Beth Wasserman Jan 2021

Analysis Of The Role Of Sgs1p In Repair Of Double-Strand Dna Breaks In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Beth Wasserman

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Mis-repair of DNA double-stranded breaks (DSB) can result in genomic rearrangements and cancer. Sgs1p is a helicase that unwinds DNA for DSB repair. To better understand its role in break repair, I analyzed the frequency of various types of DSB repairs in yeast cells with the mutation sgs1-FD. Given this mutation disrupts an interaction between Sgs1p and a critical protein, Rad51p, I hypothesized mutant cells would have more error-prone repair than high fidelity canonical BIR repair. Genome sequence and chromosome size were examined in sgs1-FD yeast cells that underwent DSB repair. No difference was found in the frequency of …

How Does Atg 10 Regulate The Autophagic Process? An Investigation Into The Atg12-5 Conjugation Pathway, Ayanda Brydie Jan 2021

How Does Atg 10 Regulate The Autophagic Process? An Investigation Into The Atg12-5 Conjugation Pathway, Ayanda Brydie

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Autophagy is a highly conserved eukaryotic cellular recycling process in which the degradation of proteins and cytoplasmic organelles occurs to recycle broken down products throughout the cell. This process plays a critical role in cell survival and maintenance. Once initiated by either nutrient deficiency (bulk autophagy) or recognition of damaged organelles (selective autophagy) this process is mediated by autophagy-related proteins (Atg proteins). The Atg proteins function to form a double-membrane vesicle, the autophagosome, to target part of the cytoplasm and deliver it to the vesicle for breakdown. In bulk autophagy, the presence of these proteins at the phagophore assembly site …

Bedbug Education, Treatment, And Prevention, Elizabeth Bedford Jan 2021

Bedbug Education, Treatment, And Prevention, Elizabeth Bedford

Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects

Cimex lectularius (bedbug) has become a severe issue in more recent years due to travel, immigration, and importation of products. Unfortunately, most people do not know their biology hence do not treat these arthropods correctly. Many myths and misinformation are currently available to people on the internet and with pest professionals. Education and proper treatment must eradicate these pests in homes, commercial buildings, and other places. To prove whether or not education with treatment garners better results, ten homes were treated with the same heating and chemical process, with only five being educated before, during and after. All homes were inspected …
